My Mediations Options

Patricia Rios is leading the ‘My Mediation Options – A Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Perspective’ project at Catalyst Foundation. My Mediation Options is seeking

to raise awareness of and access to, mediation services for CALD seniors experiencing domestic violence and/or elder abuse.

‘Our My Mediation Options’ project has successfully built relationships with various migrant communities. The response to participate has been overwhelming and we have selected 10 CALD communities to participate in this project. The communities selected are willing and able to learn and become more involved with the topic of elder abuse and domestic violence. The communities participating include Indonesians, Africans, Filipinos, Chinese, Cambodians, Muslims, Kurdish, Koreans, Spanish Speaking and the Whyalla Filipino Group.

Over the last three months we have been fortunate to have a very supportive Steering Committee made up of the following organisations; • Aged Rights Advocacy Service• Multicultural Aged Care• Multicultural Communities Council of SA• Office of the Public Advocate• Relationship Australia SA• South Australia Police• University of South Australia

We have been working hard over this period, developing surveys to ascertain information relevant to the project and the communities themselves. We have also established and enhanced our contact with 104 colleagues from 80 different service providers. The survey findings will help us develop the next stage of the project, the training package for the CALD Community Champions program.

To learn more about the project, please call Patricia at (08) 8168 8776 or email Patricia at [email protected]

Advertorial

Do you have a blind spot in your car that makes it really difficult to change lanes? Or do you struggle to get your seat or steering wheel position right?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, then RAA’s free CarFit program is for you.

The CarFit program provides tailored individual advice on how you and your car can “fit” together to maximise safety and comfort.

Together with an occupational therapist, we’ll look at your seat, mirrors, seatbelt, and head restraint to make sure they’re all setup correctly to minimise your blind spot and to keep you safe on the road.

And the best part – it takes less than half an hour to complete!

If you’re more interested in a discussion based presentation instead, then RAA’s free Years Ahead Road Safety program is for you.

The Years Ahead Road Safety program covers driving and road safety tips for drivers and pedestrians, road rules, choosing a safe vehicle, and being fit to drive.

Specially trained RAA staff visit community groups to present Years Ahead, which takes approximately one hour to deliver. A Years Ahead Lifestyle and Years Ahead Mobility Matters presentation is also available.

For more information on RAA’s CarFit and Years Ahead programs, or to book in, please contact Belinda Maloney on 8202 4221 or by emailing [email protected].

Planning Ahead

Planning Ahead is about taking control of your future. It means that your choices will be known and acted on if you cannot express them yourself at some time in the future.

This may happen if you have a sudden accident, become very ill or develop a condition that affects your memory and your planning ability.

Thinking about your future and making your wishes known in advance can help reduce family stress and conflict during times of crisis.

Planning Ahead Week 2016 will be held from 12 - 16 September, to raise general and community sector awareness of the benefits of early planning and the various legal tools that can be used to support future health, financial, legal and personal wishes – such as:

• AdvanceCareDirectives

• EnduringPowerofAttorney

• Wills

• Registrationfororganandtissuedonation.

Visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/planningahead for further information and resources, including a short animated video which you can watch and share with your family, friends and colleagues about the importance of Planning Ahead. It talks about what you can do, how, and why we all need to discuss our wishes with our loved ones. Resources include translations into Greek, Italian and Vietnamese as well as a range of videos.

It is important for all adults to understand the benefits of early planning.

Talk to your family now about your future wishes!

Act now to protect your future rights, wishes, values and preferences!
