NEWSLETTER AUGUST
2013
PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS
The last month has been extremely hectic-at work and at home. As I struggled with dividing time
between work and home [like most of you], I pondered about how we as women constantly face
limits of time.
We juggle multiple responsibilities to achieve an “ideal” work –life balance, as we don’t want to be
perceived as less dedicated to our work. Please remember that is OK to give yourself a break
sometimes.
Since not all our members are on social media - I decided to repeat some of the posts / news
available online–.
The Maritime Magazine has published a very nice article on “Women Changing the face of World
Shipping”. Please read it online on http://www.maritimemag.com
Also a very nice article on Why the Shipping Industry Needs to deliver a Unified Message.
http://www.seatrade-global.com/news/americas/the-shipping-industry-needs-to-deliver-a-
unified-message.html
Ladies, please join and “like” our WISTA India and WISTA International Facebook site
I urge all of you members to go to the brand new WISTA International website
http://wista.net/en/site/home and login. Upload your photo and your professional details, so that
you can benefit with the contacts of WISTA sisters in other countries and they can connect with
you.
All credit for this newsletter goes to Miriam Mathews
who has been rather patient with me for my erratic
schedule and am glad to announce that she shall be
managing our social media. If any member wishes to
post any news online –on our Facebook WISTA India
page they can contact her on
With Warm Regards,
Sanjam Sahi Gupta
WHAT’S THE BUZZ? Here’s a round-up of what’s been happening in WISTA India in the past couple of months.
IN CHENNAI …
On 8th June 2013, WISTA Chennai held a meeting at the Presidency Club, presided over by
Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta, the President of WISTA India. The gathering saw the coming together of 12
Chennai members.
The meeting commenced with Ms.Sushmita welcoming the members and the guest speaker for the day - Mr. Sumant Mehrish, President of German Express CFS. Being a witty and excellent orator, Mr. Mehrish shared some interesting stories of his experience where women were more capable of adapting to tough and changing situations than men.
This was followed by a presentation on the Montreal Conference, as presented by Ms. Vinita Venkatesh, with the aim to spread awareness about the upcoming conference and to encourage members to register for the same. Ms. Sanjam Gupta addressed the gathering, firstly delivering the much deserved appreciation to Vinita and Sushmita for all their efforts at organizing the meet and getting the Chennai chapter going, followed by updates on the AGM and Annual Event at Mumbai. Prior to the vote of thanks by Ms. Gopi Priya, the enthusiastic and innovative Chennai ladies took upon the kind gesture of asking Ms. Sanjam to release a WISTA Flag for the occasion. They presented one to her and Mr.Mehrish (who sponsored the flags for all the Chennai members) . Ms. Sanjam holds this flag close to her heart, and has it perched proudly on her work desk!

IN
MUMBAI…
The Mumbai

decided to hold a
networking meet
and spend an
evening
together, to take
a break from the
monotony and
just relax with
their fellow
members, at an interesting joint called Café Zoe in the happening area of the city. This is what Ms. Zinnia
Mandrekar (seen standing second from left in the photograph) had to say about this wonderful evening,
which also happened to be her first WISTA event- "Being my first meet with the WISTA ladies, I didn't know
what to expect when I entered Café Zoe. But, as soon as I met the WISTA gang I knew this was going to be
a fun evening of mixing work with play. It was a privilege for newbies like me to engage in enriching
conversations with the stalwarts of the industry. Hearing about their experiences, sharing my own over a
tall glass of ice tea and sandwiches was just ideal. I will surely look forward to more of such interactions as I
thoroughly enjoyed myself."

Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics
A holistic view of shipping, integrating commercial and technological aspects
as well as maritime law, supply-chain management, and leadership
challenges.
This is a modular program with eight week-long modules spread over 23 months on a regular basis and supported by a virtual platform, where individual/group
assignments and group discussions enhance the learning process. It aims at giving participants up-to-date insight into shipping economics and modern management theories and their application in the maritime sector. Students study the material in
between modules and write an individual or group assignment for all but the final module. Start of the next class: 23 September 2013 (with an optional pre-MBA program 18-20 September).
In the words of WISTA Member Director, Irene Rosberg -The Blue MBA serves the maritime and associated
industries by equipping executives to handle at top level the challenges of globalisation, and those of
strategic direction in their own organisations. “It is well known that ACE takes a highly rigorous approach
when it scrutinises MBA programs. That there has been a positive outcome from its review of the Blue
MBA is a testimony to the standing of the program in the business community, and to the work done by
those associated with it over the years. This will reinforce the respect and recognition that we believe we
have earned throughout our sector. We are pleased to have worked with top-flight tutors and to have had,
and to continue to have, some of the most accomplished men and women in our field among our MBA
candidates.”

THE STYLE QUOTIENT
We got Ms. Mamta Deval to share certain tips
with us - what she had to say was extremely
practical and made perfect sense! Read on to
identify your personal style, and to bring out the
stylish woman in you!
Clothing and Personal Style
Be Yourself! Everyone else is taken – Oscar Wilde
Human beings have a photographic memory.
We listen with our eyes.
Research shows that 83% of communication is visual.
Your clothes speak before you do and make a statement without saying a word.
The elements of visual image or personal appearance are:
Clothing, including accessories.
Grooming, including body hygiene, hair, skin and nail care, and makeup.
Body Language, including figure or body type, personal colouring, posture, eye contact,
facial expressions, gestures, manners, and general etiquette.
Together, these elements create a unique and memorable image which leads to an
impression in the mind of those who see you. This impression is automatic and instantaneous.
It is formed in seconds.
Every clothing item contains 5 design elements – line, shape, colour, texture and pattern.
Each of these elements conveys a message. For example, darker colours are advancing in
nature and make the wearer appear more authoritative. You need to be aware of the message
you wish to communicate, your role and the occasion and dress accordingly.
Clothing directly affects the way you think, the way you feel, the way you act, and the way
others react to you. You need to give time and attention to your clothing and appearance,
especially when:
You are meeting someone for the first time and they do not know you.
The other person’s opinion or reaction is important to the achievement of your goals.
Your mood or confidence level needs a lift.
Keep in mind the 4 A’s of personal appearance:
Appropriate: Nothing about your appearance is distracting
Authentic: Looking true to yourself
Attractive: Looking at you is a pleasant experience
Affordable: Reasonable cost in time, money and effort
Ask yourself the following questions:
Who am I going to meet? Who is going to see me?
What will I be doing?
When will I be going?
Where will I be going?
What do I want or need to accomplish?
What message do I want my clothes to make?
It is important to think about these questions in advance as it will help you to plan ahead
while deciding what to wear.
While putting together your outfit, any one element or accessory should be the dominant or
the focal point (which attracts attention), everything else should be subordinate. Too many
dominant points create confusion and make your appearance distracting.
Has this happened to you? – You see someone who has similar physical characteristics like
you wear something and they look attractive and in harmony. However, when you wear the
same outfit, it does not create a similar impact. This is because each of us is unique and has
our own personal style.
Personal Style consists of the following 3 dimensions of an individual:
Physical Characteristics – Your body build, figure type and personal colouring.
Personality Traits – Your values.
Clothing Characteristics – Elements of design, i.e. line, shape, colour, texture and
pattern.
It is important to not only present your physical self appropriately and attractively but
also be authentic by being true to your values. Manipulate the clothing characteristics to
strike a balance and create a powerful impression.
An understanding of the ancient Chinese concept of Yin
and Yang will help you to understand personal style. Yin
and Yang are two opposing but necessary characteristics
in nature, like the sun and the moon, fire and water.
Yin represents subordinate, receding, receptive, gentle
traits while Yang represents dominant, advancing,
assertive traits. Since Yin traits are usually associated
with women and Yang traits with men, people often
confuse Yin and Yang as feminine and masculine.
It is very rare to find a person who is exclusively Yin or exclusively Yang. Most people, like
the symbol, are a combination of both, with one type dominant and the other type
subordinate. Both are equally important and interdependent.
To identify your personal style, think about what you like and what you don’t – on others and
in stores as well. Analyse the elements (line, shape, colour, texture and pattern) of these
clothing items. Take time to experiment with your clothes. Try out different looks, a
different accessory or a new colour. Observe how you feel while wearing those clothes; be
aware of how you act and how others react to you. This will help you discover what you like
and will help you to develop and understand your personal style. You will know what works for
you, what doesn’t and why!

In the Spot Light
WISTA India was started with
an aim to provide an avenue to
the women in this tough industry
to shine bright, and to ensure
that their efforts received the
well-deserved recognition.
We have among us, such a star,
who has proved her grit and
efficiency by being an industrial
toughie and a loving mother at
the same time – Ms. Shantha
Martin, the Regional CEO for NVOCC vertical for
Allcargo Logistics Limited heading the Indian
Subcontinent and Middle East, responsible for 23
offices in 5 countries, and also the Joint Secretary in
the Executive Committee of WISTA.
On popular demand from fellow WISTA members, we did
an interview with her, to find out how Ms. Martin (who
also recently won the title of ‘Leading Woman in
Logistics’ at the International Women Leadership Forum)
maintains her cool despite her varied responsibilities,
and serves as a role model for the other women in the
industry.
-Your work and travel schedule are extremely hectic. How do you
manage home and family despite this?
“Team work applies at home too - me and my husband share the
responsibilities of home and family, and the times when I am
travelling my husband manages not just take care of himself but my
daughter too, and he does a very good job of it!! I also try to
effectively manage time by prioritizing work and home schedules.”
-When you take leave to look after your daughter, is the organization
supportive vis a vis other male counterparts who don't take any
paternal leave?
“My organization has been very supportive in allowing me the
flexibility I desire, and my male counterparts had no issues expressed
with this, and I never held them back in seeking any paternal leave
either.”
Ms Martin joined Allcargo
Logistics Limited in 2003 as the
National Import Manager.
Allcargo was then an SME in the
logistics sector, a sector which
was unorganized but held great
future promises as India emerged
as one of the economic giants of
the future. She grew in ranks year
on year from GM, VP, CEO of
India and CEO for Indian
Subcontinent and Middle East.
Ms. Shantha Martin is a Science
graduate and holds an MBA in
marketing from T A Pai
Management Institute, Manipal.
She started her career with Reed
Elsevier PLC, a British
Multinational publishing house,
and gathered herself the
distinction of working for diverse
sectors and later with the French
hospitality multinational, Accor
Corporate Services, as a Branch
Manager before joining Allcargo.
Under her leadership the NVOCC
division of Allcargo Logistics
Limited has won the leading
Consolidator of the Year
consecutively for the last 3 years
and also the Logistics Company of
Year 2010.
She was adjudged the runner up
in the Leading women CEO
category of the Women Leaders
of India awards organised by I -
Global in 2010. The All India
Business Management
Association recognised her
contribution to the National
Development through her field of
work and conferred upon her the
“Bhartiya Vikas Ratan” in
February 2011.
-Do you think that women take the majority of responsibility in child rearing? Would you encourage a more
equal role for both parents?
“Our society has come of age now, and in a metropolis like Mumbai such roles are largely shared, it is true
that it will take a while for the mindsets to change, especially in smaller towns and the rural India, and I'm
optimistic that as India progresses our outlook will also progress.”
-What message would you give to other young women who aspire to reach top management positions?
“Don't sleep and dream; don't sleep over your dreams ... dreams turn into reality only when we are fully
awake to it!! Women need to be aware of the potentials they have within themselves and they need to
continuously strive to create a position they rightfully deserve to be in and not wait for any special
allocations. One must bring in this self- realized potential to the workplace and contribute thus to the
diversity of talent within the organization .Being focused on what she aims to be and consistently working
towards it gets her to what she aspires.”
-How would you define your leadership style?
“Create more leaders, allow innovation, communicate openly, encourage and reward good team work.”
-What was the crucial decision you took, which helped shape your career?
“Moving out from security and comfort and taking on challenges by working in diverse industries from
healthcare to data base and event management to hospitality to logistics.”
