A woman came up to me and said, “Do you mind if I tell you a little story?” As always, I replied I would love to hear it. She said, “My husband in his late fiſties came home one day and said, “I have been going through a series of medical tests, and today, I was told that I have advanced cancer with the probability of only a few months to live.” He went straight on to tell her that he went back to his workplace where he was one of the Directors, told the others the situation and that he had decided to leave work immediately that day – the others all backed his decision. So, he said to his wife, “I am now officially retired so we can spend the next months doing what we want to do together. She said, “As you can imagine I was absolutely bowled over by the sudden and totally unexpected news. I could hardly sleep that night and kept sobbing.” She said, “I must have finally dropped off to sleep and when I awoke, I saw something I had never seen before – my husband was standing at the window. He said to me, "I have just realised how beautiful those bushes and trees are outside. I have never stopped long enough over the years to truly look at them – their extraordinary colours and their differences from each other. How tall some are and the wonderful shape of others." He said some of them actually have tiny little blossoms that attract lots of bees, and I just noticed many of them seem to co-exist with each other and even expand into each other’s branches.’ She said he seemed transfixed and just stayed there for over 2 hours in this state of marvel. She then looked at me and gave a beautiful smile. She said, “at was 10 years ago and he still does this marvelling every morning. Apparently, there is now no sign of cancer in his body”. Wow, what a story of mindfulness, of embracing stillness, of really linking with nature, of focusing, of seeing with both his eyes and heart – it was as if his spirit linked for the first time with nature in a blissful partnership – I have never forgotten this story. When our bodies truly slow down, relax, and we become inwardly quiet and peaceful then it has the ability to work in harmony within it and allow the natural healing to occur. What a giſt this is for us to give ourselves, but of course, most of us find in our rush-rush society this is such a challenge. A few years ago, I had just completed a talk on Releasing and Letting Go. A woman came up to me and said, “Do you mind if I tell you a

little story?” As always, I replied I would love to hear it.She said, “My husband in his late fifties came home one day and said, “I have been going through a series of medical tests, and today, I was told that I have advanced cancer with the probability of only a few months to live.” He went straight on to tell her that he went back to his workplace where he was one of the Directors, told the others the situation and that he had decided to leave work immediately that day – the others all backed his decision.So, he said to his wife, “I am now officially retired so we can spend the next months doing what we want to do together. Welcome – We’re With You All The Way

What a remarkable, changing experience life can be. One moment we feel good and perhaps confident and secure – Then Wham! Everything can fall apart in regard to our health, our relationships or job, our

confidence and our sense of being okay – we may feel alone, isolated or in constant anxiety.Unfortunately, that’s what being a human being is all about. When changes for the apparent worst happen, it can feel devastating – then the mind jumps in with increasing dire predictions for the days and years ahead.

There’s an old saying of what goes up must go down and what goes down will go up. But we have to keep that mind of ours working with us and not against us. The old advice that, this too shall pass is invaluable to hold on to. It’s also good to remember that many of our courses are all about dealing with changes. So often people write on their Comment Sheets “Thank goodness I made the decision to come here today – just what I needed.”Many of our Presenters offer what they do after hitting a devastating problem or experiencing a personal collapse in their own life and then bringing themselves step-by-step back into feeling good again – BUT discovering and learning so much on the way. Again, we receive numerous comments about the openness and honesty of the speakers and participants saying they no longer feel so alone, different or disconnected – So, as I have written many, many times “Don’t forget – WE ARE HERE – Looking forward to welcoming you. — Lionel Fifield

Being a Volunteer Here

As this Newsletter goes out we celebrate our 46th birthday. Over those years many thousands of volunteers have played their

small or significant part in the life of the Relaxation Centre. There are a myriad of jobs done superbly by our volunteers according to their choice and abilities so that our Centre can be open for many hours each week.Here is Rene Molenaar who has been an outstanding helper for 3 years, mostly in the evenings. If you would like to volunteer or find out more come to one of the following meetings. Tuesday 6 October, 6.30pm; Saturday 24 October, 11.30am; Thursday 12 November, 1.30pm; Tuesday 1 December, 5.30pm. Please advise if you are coming or you have questions.

People Power

Those of you who watch that great gardening show “Gardening Australia” may have seen a man who noticed how gardens around Railway Stations in South Australia are no longer being given the necessary attention. So, he put the word out for

volunteers who would like to help him. About 40 people put their hands up and Gardening Australia were able to show us the now beautiful gardens and a team of deeply keen volunteers loving what they’re doing with lots of plans to keep extending.I write this because although it was very different it was in 1974 when a group of us got together and established the Relaxation Centre as a body of volunteers determined to create a place that functioned free of government funding. What a miracle it has been but all too often groups of people say they want to create a voluntary organisation, but so quickly apply for funds from elsewhere. People with a vision and a determination have a power which should never be underestimated. I believe that people-power and strong vision will be more and more vital in the years ahead – Becoming dependent on external forces takes away something that is deeper, farther reaching and more extraordinary than our logical minds can grasp.

Most of you reading this have your preferences – some love the printed Programme sent to them or pick it up – for others it’s

definitely a preference for the email version – you are welcome to receive it both ways if requested.When you are on our email list you will also receive reminders most weeks of what is coming up. We want our Newsletter to give you the information you need. Hopefully you will find inspiration and encouragement and you enjoy it in whichever form you choose.

Programme you will see her on page 18.Donna's story was highlighted on the ABC TV Programme Australian Story. She had thrown herself off the Story

Bridge and miraculously survived – now she inspires many others.

Annual Clean-Up DayMONDAY 28 DECEMBER,

This might sound hard work but many people volunteer on this day

to clean up all sorts of areas that need that extra touch after a year of much activity. The Centre always feels so good afterwards and we are then ready and sparkling for the New Year.These are really enjoyable days of company and satisfaction. Lunch provided but bring a bit more if you would like to do so. Please call Reception and say, "I'll be there" - See you on the 28th.

and avoiding stress, breaking the stress cycle, changing control issues, limiting your worries and embracing a healthier outlook on life situations.

It is not about physical fitness, but about training for your mental fitness. NO exhausting physical exercises, but mental exercises to empower you. At the Relaxation Centre many years ago, we had a visit from Richard St. Barbe Baker called

"The Man of The Trees". He was accredited with being responsible for trillions of trees being planted on the planet. Towards his end

of his talk, when he was in his early 90s, he looked at the audience and said, “This is the best

day and happiest day of my life”. Wow! What a remarkable man living so much in the present moment.

There are so many treasures hidden within us! However, unconsciously we live so much of our lives depressing rather than expressing them. Discovering The Gift of AngerCate CrombieMany of us struggle to really understand what makes us emotionally angry although we generally think we know and who to blame.

Once we can see and know and recognise that the anger is within us and not external, we have taken a major step towards transforming it without suppressing it. There are two parts to today’s course.

Part 1, responding more effectively to another’s anger by safely hearing it without taking it onboard and also increasing our ability to de-escalate anger. We discover what can happen when we respond with authenticity, vulnerability and honesty in the presence of angry feelings, and, Part 2 – enhancing self-awareness of the cause of our anger and learning how to express ourselves honestly in a way that can support connection and having important needs met. When we find ourselves angry, we’re usually experiencing a strong need, have an urgent desire to have it met and can fear it won’t be fulfilled.

Different Perceptions – New PossibilitiesOne of my delights on most days is eating my breakfast on my sunny veranda wearing the bare minimum – it’s quiet and blissful – however sometimes I am joined by a few mozzies that put me on alert!I reckon I’m a good swatter and admire my own speed – but some of those little jet-propelled invaders prove amazingly elusive. That stressing buzz sets me on edge. Suddenly it all dies down – I say to myself, you did it, well done! I can now enjoy my breakfast. A few moments later I am dramatically aware that that mozzie changed its direction and quietly attacked from behind. Then, full of my blood happily heads off feeling blissful.I thought recently how smart that mozzie is. – When their target is not safe to approach, they change their perception and come from a totally different angle. Suddenly I was full of admiration for my very clever and versatile invader.What a lot we can learn from a mozzie! The vast majority of us repeat the same actions and thoughts as we’ve always done before yet hope for a different outcome.Right now, the mighty mozzie is here to lead the way. The majority of us are currently needing to review our perceptions of our regular ways of doing things, our communicating with each other, what we eat, our fixed routines, our relationships with change, including isolation, our expectations as well as our shoulds and ought tos.We could now be exploring one of the greatest opportunities of our lives. Yes, step-by-step out of our conditioned ways of living to a new freedom of discovery and finding qualities and interests we never knew we had. WOW! This could include suppressed dreams from our childhood.We need to move – so my suggestion is (whispered in my ear by my mozzie guru) to explore your abilities to perceive and move from different angles. Physical movement is vital for health and wellness and is recommended for depression, circulation and numerous ailments but starting can be difficult, as we have forgotten how as kids, we danced, skipped and ran endlessly. Of course, our bodies don’t feel the same as we age, but let’s start. For the first day amble 20 metres along the road or footpath and back – the next day do a further 20 metres. By 10 days you will be up to 200 metres – you are on your way beginning to become aware of how good you can feel. All changes need to commence with just a small step at a time – be gentle with yourself but be consistent.Many years ago, I was so inspired by a man in his late 70s who was virtually paralysed by a stroke. He started back with a few steps and within two years he had climbed a mountain and was full of energy and enthusiasm. Enjoy your changes as they hatch and develop. – Lionel Fifield

Many people are now speaking openly about suffering from depression. For some it seems a daily companion.When we’re going through depression it can seem like a huge load we are carrying daily and it’s hard to tap

into anything that brings joy or laughter. But all importantly, we long to have the feelings of lightness along with enthusiasm for what we do at home and work.Dr Winfried Sedhoff is a medical doctor who experienced depression himself and has developed the course you will see on page 5. Michael Dunn started teaching yoga about 50 years ago and has been

exploring and practising meditation throughout those decades. A business man said to me a few years ago that he had paid many thousands of dollars to speakers from overseas to motivate his staff but with very short-term benefits. Then he experienced Cate Crombie presenting

Compassionate Communication at the Relaxation Centre.He immediately invited Cate to present a 2-day session to his staff.
