As the refugee crisis continues

across Europe, Newham schools are working to send

supplies and support to where it is most needed.

“I think it is really important for

students to get involved and donate as it helps other people who don’t

have the same things as us. When I saw the refugees on the news, I

thought that life can be really cruel to some people and that everybody

d e s e r v e s t h e r i g h t s a nd

opportunities” said Andrada Morar, a year 8 pupil at Eastlea.

Eastlea Community School is working in partnership with Selwyn

Primary in Newham and John Scurr

in Tower Hamlets to collect donations to be delivered to the

Calais refugee camp.

To make the collections meaningful,

students have decorated shoe boxes and included personal

messages to be sent to refugees.

Eastlea have also been collecting books and on the evening of

Monday 28th September, they had a knit-a-thon where staff, parents and

carers gave their time and showed

their skills to knit and crochet

squares to be sewn into blankets. The finished items will be donated

to organisations taking supplies to refugee camps nearer Syria. Staff,

students and the local community

have also donated clothes, shoes and other items that are badly

needed in the refugee camps.

The students’ enthusiasm for the

project showed that people can make a difference when they see

something that moves them to take

action.

“I am looking forward to making my

shoe box to help a child in Calais. I'm going to fill it with lots of useful

things”. Said Aliyah, a year 2

pupil at Selwyn Primary.

Chinye Jibunoh, Principal at Eastlea

Community School said: “Our staff, students and parents, like many

people in this wonderful country, can empathise with the refugees.

Eastlea has a proud tradition of

campaigning for social justice and this event is an extension of that

ethos. We want to send a message of solidarity, as well as give

something concrete, to the

refugees. I am very proud of

the Eastlea community, and thank

all who have contributed. In particular, Ms Leilee and Nazanin

Shirani, who instigated this idea.”

Chinye’s sentiments were echoed by

Emma Nicholls, Head Teacher at

Selwyn Primary School, saying: “We are looking forward to working with

Eastlea Community School and John Scurr Primary School to fundraise

for this very worthy cause. Our children are enthusiastic about

helping people in need and getting

involved in this project.”

Roald Dahl was brought to life

by Ranelagh Primary School as part of their School Book Week

celebrations.

Sunday, 13th September was the

Official Roald Dahl Day and this

year it would mark the 99th birthday of the children's author.

Opening on the International Day of Literacy, Ranelagh teachers and

support staff launched School Book Week by getting into dress as

characters from Roald Dahl’s books

to bring the stories and characters to life and inspire pupil creativity.

Throughout the whole school, from Nursery to Year 6, stories were

read, explored and re-enacted.

Pupils got crafty with 'The Twits', 'James and the Giant Peach' and

'The Witches' and a special assembly was held to pass on, to a

spellbound audience, the wonders of Roald Dahl's story books and his

memorable characters. Many

teachers at Ranelagh remembered reading Roald Dahl's books when

they were young and wanted to pass on the impact, inspiration and

joy o f r ead ing they had

experienced.

The events of School Book Week are emblematic of a wider

commitment at the school to good literacy practice throughout. It also

endeavours to inspire a love of

books that the children will carry with them throughout their lives.

Executive Head Teacher, Angela Tapscott, has already purchased

sets of the Times Educational

Supplements’ 100 top books and, in collaboration with the School

Council, will be setting up a library scheme, so that all children in the

school will have the opportunity to

read the books before they leave.

Angela said: "It is very important

here at Ranelagh that our pupils acquire the reading skills that will

prepare them for the world beyond school. But, it is vital that the staff

at Ranelagh help the children to

develop a deep love of reading that will take them on an incredible life-

long journey. Events such as Roald Dahl Day, International Day of

Literacy and Book Week, here at

Ranelagh, help to show our children how important books are to

everyone at the school."

The pupils at Ranelagh are

encouraged to read fictional books for pleasure, alongside the school

reading scheme, bi-lingual books in

their Spanish classes and also factual books on a daily basis. In

November pupils will be taking to the stage to perform Shakespeare's

Richard III at the Stratford Circus

and year 5 are looking forward to meeting Jeff Kinney, author of

'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'.

A list of the top 100 fiction books all

children should read before they

leave primary school has been released by The Times Educational

Supplement and the National Association for the Teaching of

English. Roald Dahl’s 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' took the

number one spot. Fifty-one years

after this story was written, it still captures the hearts of children and

is obviously a firm favourite with teachers, who voted it into the top

position on the list.

Is your own teaching outstanding, and do you have the skills and knowledge to help others develop their teaching? Are you resilient, imaginative, thoughtful,

conscientious and determined? Do you treat staff and students the way that you expect to be treated yourself? Are you continuously on the lookout for examples of outstanding practice which your institution can learn from? Lister Community School is a large 11-16 comprehensive school. Our November 2013 Ofsted report spoke of the school’s ‘consistent focus on raising the quality of teaching and developing a culture of learning and high aspirations across the school’. We are determined to continue building on our success, and to continue our focus on staff development. Our goal is to provide a world class education. Our staff regularly visit other schools as part of our Outstanding Practice Programme and this has developed the school’s ‘outward looking’ ethos. Our students are friendly, courteous, motivated and have high aspirations. The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including becoming the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, and a close partnership with the recently founded Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre. Further information about Music at Lister can be found on the dedicated Lister Music Department website: www.listercommunitymusic.com As part of our continued focus on further developing the quality of teaching we are seeking to appoint a dynamic Head of Music to lead this subject within our dedicated Music & Drama Faculty.
