Presbytery Minister’s Word
Beautiful weather, good company , excellent input and
opportunities for personal reflection characterised our
Presbytery Retreat. Keith Farmer brought a wealth of experience
in ministry and mentoring. Coming from outside our
denomination he helped us to see ourselves and our church from
a different perspective. We were greatly encouraged. Keith’s
notes are available on request from the Presbytery office.
Keith helped us reflect on five key issues: Spirituality, relationships, emotional well -being, the
created rhythms of life, and vulnerabilities.
There was fun Dragon Boat racing on the river and, for some of
us, the State of Origin result was pleasing. Trevor Gibson and
Brad Foote proudly represented their States of origin.
Our thanks go to those who led
worship and provided music.
The only down side was that
attendance was little more than half those who were eligible. It is
my hope that future retreats will benefit from an increased
attendance.
Please note the Presbytery gatherings planned this month; 20th
at Newlife Robina and the 28th
at
Capalaba.

How are parents supposed to keep up when the Internet is
an ever-expanding, ever-changing environment? How do
you encourage your children to live a fully authentic life
while protecting them from the many pitfalls that social
media so readily provides?
UNDERSTANDING YOUR KIDS & THEIR DIGITAL LIFE is a 90 minute session
free of fear and fake news that will deliver tools and help parents develop strategies to
address the growing digital divide between them and the young people in their care.
We will explore how young people use the internet; provide tips on discussing
appropriate behaviour; and share ideas on ways to support your young people by
providing a safe, supportive environment. There will be the opportunity to discuss the
material, including a Q&A session.
Presenter: Steve Molkenton - Digital Youth Discipleship Project Officer, Qld Synod.

CAN YOU HELP OUR YOUNG SOUTH SUDANESE ATTEND THEIR NATIONAL CONFERENCE?
Gala cultural fund-raising evening
St David’s UC, Coopers Plains
Saturday, July 1, 6:00-9:00 pm
Having hosted the very successful South Sudanese UCA National Conference in 2015, the Nuer Faith
Community at Coopers Plains are keen to attend this year’s National Conference, being held in
Melbourne in September. They are especially keen for their young people to be able to attend. But travel
costs are high, and they need our help. So the community is holding a Gala Fund-raising Evening of
Sudanese food, fashion, music and dancing at St David’s on Saturday, July 1, from 6:00 pm. Entry is
free, with an encouragement for people to donate during the evening. All proceeds will help pay for
travel and conference costs for their young people.
The attached flyer has all the details. Please promote this in your Congregation so that our whole
Presbytery can get behind this community. You might also wish to take up a special offering, or your
Church Council may wish to make a donation. If so, please contact the Presbytery Office about
depositing those funds.

KIDS CAMP OUT is on 19-20 August 2017
Kids Camp Out is an overnight camp for kids 7-12 years of age. KCO aims to help kids to
explore faith through their own discovery, encouraging sharing and relationships with their
peers. At KCO kids enjoy a wide range of activities, games, worship and music, based around
the theme of Guess who? Yes You!. The theme aims to teach the campers about Jesus' life and
teachings, in a manner that is understandable, appropriate to their context and, of course,
incredibly fun.
KCO is an activity of South Moreton Presbytery, and is organized by a team of dedicated people
who have put together an excellent program. Congregations bring children, leaders, and camping
equipment with some food and then join the program.
For information about registration and organizing your congregation to attend please contact

Transforming Worship:
A national conference on worship in the UCA 27-30 July, 2017, Burnside City UC,
Adelaide SA
We have an interview with two of our keynote speakers here - http://sa.uca.org.au/new-
times/transforming-worship-2017
The elective program is nearly finalised. We have a good mix of local church stories of practice,
some experiential stuff, and stretching people further in their crafting of worship. We are trying
to concentrate on things that will take people outside of their comfort zones. The current
program is on the website - transformingworship.com.au - but there will be a final update
shortly.
President’s National Ministry Conferences 2017:
Assembly President Stuart McMillan’s two National Ministerial Conferences will be held in
Darwin 29 June - 2 July and Adelaide 22-25 August.
The Darwin conference theme is “Honouring First Peoples as Sovereign”. The Adelaide
conference is combined with the UL17 Conference “Growing Leaders to Grow the Church”.

Uniting World – Syrian Children Project:
You may have heard that UnitingWorld has launched a campaign to support Syrian refugee
children in Lebanon to be able to access school.
UnitingWorld National Director Rob Floyd has written about the situation in Lebanon after a
recent trip to connect with churches there. Currently, an estimated 350,000 Syrian kids in
Lebanon do not attend school due to the costs and the strain on schools to cater to the sudden
massive population growth. Working through ACT Alliance members in the region, including
the Middle East Council of Churches, and local churches in Lebanon, UnitingWorld will work to
improve access to education for children whose families have been impacted by the conflict. It’s
a great opportunity to use our networks in the Middle East help prevent a growing ‘lost
generation’ of Syrian kids who are missing out on an education.
We’re crowdfunding to make it a reality. If you would like to know more visit our Chuffed page
to read more about the campaign: https://chuffed.org/project/syriakids
Where: Sandgate Uniting Church, 116 Board Street, Deagon.
Cost: $25.00 Adult; $20.00 Concession (incl. Morning Tea & Lunch)
