Dear Parents and Carers

Our last newsletter of the term gives details of some of the wonderful activities that our students have been engaged in in the last two weeks: we certainly haven’t been relaxing into the holidays!

Last night many of you joined us for a fantastic Winter Concert at which a significant number of our students from all year groups performed. It was a spectacular event, showcasing the range of musical skills that our students are developing. Many thanks to Mr Morgan, Ms Hope, Mr Fowler, Ms Morten, Mr Robinson and Mr Coughlin, as well as to all the staff and student performers!

Today we say a goodbye to Ms Malik for two terms. She is taking a short break from work to support her son while he recovers from an operation. We look forward to having her back with us in September. I am delighted to report that Ms Benmouh will be taking Ms Malik’s classes during her absence.

We have a new Technology teacher, Ms Hinds, joining us in January. She has written a message to introduce herself:

“I am very much looking forward to joining Isaac Newton Academy in the New Year as a Design and Technology teacher. Since the opening of Isaac Newton Academy in 2012, I have aspired to work here and was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to join such an exciting environment to enrich pupils’ learning both inside and outside the classroom.Having visited the school I was very impressed with the facilities and the general ethos of the school. I am passionate about all areas of DT, especially Food and TextilesTechnology, which I will be taking a lead role in.

I am from Redbridge myself and attended Valentines High School. From there I went on to study Management and Marketing of Textiles at the University of Manchester. On my return to London I successfully passed my PGCE in Food and Textiles at the University of East London. My first teaching role took me to Caterham High School. I have spent the last two years at the City Academy, Hackney, where I have progressed tremendously and took a lead role in special educational needs alongside teaching all areas of Design and Technology. I am now looking forward to returning to Redbridge and passing on my knowledge and passion to the students at Isaac Newton Academy.

I cannot think of a better way to start my new year!”

With best wishes,

Rachel Macfarlane,

Principal

Year 10 Speak Out Success

On Friday 11th December, 29 Year 10 students took their first steps in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. It is

the first time that the Academy has participated in this national competition and our students got off to a great start, having a full day of coaching in their presentation skills. As well as considering voice, body language and style, the students learnt how to structure and craft a speech that would grab an audience’s attention and make their voices heard. One particular feature of the coaching was working on speaking confidently without notes; the group discussed how this could support them with university applications and future employment .

The day culminated with the first competition round where students delivered their speeches in front of the group, myself, and Carl, their Jack Petchey coach. Speech topics were varied and included, bullying, protecting the environment, artificial intelligence and diving. The quality level was so high that it was impossible for me to judge alone, so we have taken seven students through to a Year 10 assembly final, to be held in January, where two of the students will be selected to represent their school in the Redbridge heats.

Congratulations to all who participated and delivered such wonderful speeches, but in particular to our finalists: Halema Anjum, Keanna Bhalla, Zaynah Chaudhry, Max Haluwa, Yusra Kilic, Simran Larr and Awais Seyyad.

On the 12th of December 25 students spanning across

years 7,8 and 9 met to take part in a Geography Saturday Stretch session. We welcomed Aditi Arora, a Geography undergraduate in her second year of study at Southampton University. Aditi began by explaining and describing how she ended up a budding geographer:

It all started during my GCSEs when I scored 100% in my human geography exam therefore I thought I’d take it for A level. I became a member of the Royal Geographical Society where I attended lectures and regularly read the FT, National Geographic Magazine and kept up to date with general affairs.

During my time studying, I realised how geography is a discipline that it is constantly evolving and is present everywhere and every day. Furthermore, it spans multiple disciplines which meant I could study other subjects within Geography that I really enjoyed such as Economic Geography, Geographies of Wellbeing and Cultural Geographies.

I did Geography, Maths, Economics and French at A level as well as gaining a qualification in Finance and achieved 5 As overall. I am a huge advocate of ‘smart’ working i.e. that quality of work has a much greater impact than quantity of hours put in. I have always been extremely busy having played most girls sports and toured internationally in Hockey and Netball as well as performing dances nationally and playing hockey for Essex. This was only all possible because I ensured that the hours I had available to study were all of high productivity!”

Helpfully, Aditi explained the keys differences between human and physical geography; both courses that universities commonly offer. She detailed that under the umbrella term of Human Geography you would be likely to cover modules in Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Globalisation and Social Justice, Welfare and Rights. If you were to opt for Physical Geography you would study such units as Maths, Geology, Environmental Science and The Earth System. It was helpful to know the key differences between the two and helped cement the students’ understanding of Geography at degree level.

Aditi went on to talk about the possible career paths available at the end of a degree in Geography and talked

more about some of the invaluable transferable skills she has learned from studying the discipline, to include:

• Goodcommunicationand strong presentational skills• IndependentResearching• TimeManagement• ExcellentWritingSkills• ProducingandInterpreting Maps• Fieldworktechniques

Lastly, the session concluded with a very active challenge; each group was charged with the task of blowing up a balloon and creating the world with a marker. Students had to draw from their geographical knowledge to correctly place continents and countries. Students were given extra marks for adding in famous landmarks.

Each group presented their world and special mention goes to Kisanth Ravi, Jay Amin and Zafirah Bhatti in year 7 who blew the year 8s and 9s out of the water with their presentational skills! They had correctly placed all countries and landmarks as well as delivering an engaging and impressive presentation.

The session was a great success and certainly equipped the students with a more comprehensive view of Geography beyond Isaac Newton Academy.

When asked the question ‘do you think the session was helpful?’ some students said:

“Yes because I was told about the process of going to university and it has helped me plan my future.”

“Yes, I learnt about the responsibilities that come with university and the skills I need”.

When asked if the session had prompted them to consider studying this subject at university some students said:

“Yes because it seems really fun and enjoyable- at first I didn’t think so!”

Fixtures and ResultsLast week student took part in Handball and Volleyball at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The lucky students that got selected for this trip were the INA girls who had won the Redbridge Handball Championships the previous week.

This was a great opportunity to be exposed to the sport Volleyball and a great chance to further their knowledge of Handball which is still really new to them despite their success. Sessions were run by athletes from both the Handball and Volleyball Team GB squad. All students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and came away with a wealth of knowledge about sports which were unfamiliar to them. The student represented INA exceptionally well.

Upcoming fixtures6th January• Year 9 Netball vs Forest Academy (Away)7th January • KS4 Badminton Tournament (Home)• BOCCIA Tournament (Away)

Last week the Year 10 Sports Leadership Group got to test out their planning and leadership skills by running a Year 1 multi-skills session. The students have been learning about the skills and qualities needed for effective sports leadership as well as looking at activities suitable for primary age children and having a go at planning their own sessions. The session ran smoothly and fun was had by all involved, it was great to see the year 1 students responding

so well to the enthusiasm demonstrated by the sports leaders. They were full of energy and engaged brilliantly with every task.

Community Languages GCSEsDoes your son/daughter speak a language other than English at home e.g. Italian, German, Russian, Urdu, Bengali, Polish, Turkish, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese? Can he/she read and write the language to a good standard?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to these questions, your child may be able to take an early entry GCSE in the language at INA.

Students will need to study independently for the exam. The school will supply past papers for students to practise and will pay the exam entry fees but we are unable to offer any tuition in the language. Students will need to make a commitment to studying independently for the exams.

What happens next?

Ms Spencer will be talking to students about the process in assemblies in the week beginning 17th November. Any students interested in finding out more should attend a meeting with Ms Spencer and Mr Crowther Green on Tuesday lunchtime. Ms Spencer will distribute a past paper GCSE paper and a mark scheme for the language for students to do at home. Parents will need to mark the paper and students should return it to Ms Spencer by Monday 23rd November. The school will then make a decision as to whether the student can be entered for the exams next summer. Mr Crowther-Green will contact parents directly to discuss the decision. Should a student not be deemed ready to take the exam, he/she may be able to take it the following year.

If you would like to would like more information or you would like to discuss the matter further, please contact Ms Spencer or Mr Crowther-Green.

Dear Parents of Y10 studentsReports for Y10 students will be published in early January and have been revised to better support students following GCSE courses. The student’s current progress will be reported in GCSE grades and will include fine grading. A 1 or + after a grade indicates the student is progressing towards the next grade whereas a 3 or – would indicate the grade is not currently secure. See the table below for full details.

The student reports will also feature and attitude to learning for each subjectAttitude to Learning Key:

We are writing to remind all students in Year 9, and their parents, of our GCSE Computer Science Taster Session running the first day back after the holidays.

Computer Science is being offered as a GCSE option for the first time from September 2016. As part of this addition to the KS4 curriculum, a taster session will be delivered to students on Tuesday 5th January 2015 from 3:15 to 4:30pm. This will provide students with a better understanding of the demands of the course, enabling those interested in this subject to make an informed decision about choosing Computing as a GCSE.

Year 9 students have heard about this in assembly and through registration. If you would like your son/daughter to attend this session, encourage your child to collect the letter and return the permission slip to Key Stage 3 Reception as soon as possible.

INA visits.... On Friday 11th of December year 10 students

gave up their Friday evening to attend a public science lecture at UCL. This is what they had to

say about it.

“The lecture was about if we would leave our families to go on a one way trip to Mars. The speech was very interesting as we learnt about the red planet and the outside solar system and how difficult a mission to Mars would actually be. It was also very exciting to hear about how many different projects they are currently working on that could take us to the red planet. We were very grateful that the teachers took time out of their timetables to facilitate our trip. It was very inspirational”.

INA's trip to

On Wednesday 16th of December 40 students from Years 9 & 10 attended a medical school workshop at Kings College Medical School.

“We went to Kings College for a medical workshop led by students in their second year studying medicine. We took part in a number of activities to develop our clinical skills, such as learning to take someone's blood and practising stitches, which proved to be more difficult then it looked. We also tried CPR and learnt how to save someone's life if they were choking or experienced a heart attack. The tour of the campus showed us what I'd be like to be a medical student in future, and was a valuable experience for the future”.

Neha Rajput& Aishwarya Year 10

“Kings College was a great experience. We took part in a medical workshop learning how to draw blood, perform CPR, measure our blood pressure and perform key-hole surgery and stitches. Learning these skills was a lot more difficult than they looked; however it was great fun. We also went on a tour of the campus and experienced what it would be like to be a medical student”.

Ishani & Zaynab Year 9

We would like to thank the following students for being such great ambassadors for our school and hope this proves some food for thought when considering their future career choices.

“If you are a serious student, intellectually curious, creative, eager to embrace new challenges and opportunities, then Phillips Exeter Summer School may be for you.”

Last week Ms Abbott-Jones and I spoke to Year 8 students in assembly about a fantastic opportunity for 6 of the year group to attend the Phillips Exeter Summer School from 2nd

July to 6th August 2016. This is a prestigious programme of Harkness lessons, sports and cultural excursions at one of the top independent schools in the USA. Any student wishing to apply to be considered for this trip MUST attend a meeting with their parent/carer at the school on Wednesday 6th January 2016 at 6.30pm prompt, where there will be the opportunity to find out much more and to ask questions. Application forms will be distributed at this meeting, with a deadline of Monday 18th January for returns.

Rachel Macfarlane, Principal

We are noticing an increasing number of parents wanting to pay with cash at reception for their child’s school meals.

As you will be aware, we strive to be a cashless school and we are keen to ensure that all parents have access to, and are familiar with, how to load cash on to their child’s wisepay account via the internet.

If you are experiencing difficulties in accessing your child’s account, or would like help or advice or a reminder of your username and password, please contact Ms Khan on 020 8911 6666 or e-mail [email protected]

Many thanks

Mrs Chamberlain

As you are aware, we consulted recently on the material of the Academy headscarves following reports that the material was too slippery. We liaised with the uniform supplier, Khalsa, and subsequently changed the material to a cotton material which is less slippery. However, we have noticed that the material is becoming very discoloured and is affecting the overall look of the Academy uniform so we are going to have to review our decision and potentially revert back to the previous material. However, we would welcome any input or advice from parents before we do so. If you have any ideas, please contact me in the first instance by Friday, 16th January 2015.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mrs Chamberlain

Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and ability to achieve their full potential.

At Isaac Newton Academy every student is set the target of 100% attendance. We know that attendance has a direct link to progress, and would urge you to really consider if a day off school is necessary.

As you can see the competition was close, but a huge well done goes to 7N, 8N, 9I and 10N our Autumn attendance shield winners.

The overall year group winner was Year 7 with a fantastic 96.9%, followed by Year 10 in second place with 96% and in third place Year 8 came in close behind with 95.9%.

How we build learning power and develop character at Isaac Newton Academy

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” Isaac Newton

The secondary BRIDGES programme commences on Monday 14th September. BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a student's character and learning power and enable them to grow into well rounded individuals and resilient learners.

On a two weekly cycle throughout the year, Year 7 and 8 students are introduced to one or two new habits of mind or learning characteristics that will permeate throughout the curriculum. This will take place through a range of interactive activities. In addition, the students will experience BRIDGES learning objectives in each and every lesson throughout Isaac Newton Academy. Year 9 BRIDGES lessons will focus on strengthening certain BRIDGES learning characteristics through exploration of PHSE topics and themes.

Each fortnight you will find top tips in the newsletter of ways of supporting your child to develop the BRIDGES habits of mind and learning characteristics within the home.
