Year 10 Work Experience This week sees the return of all Year 10 students to normal classes after a week of work experience. Our local community and businesses played a large role in our program helping to place approximately 76 students at various locations. All students were either visited or called whilst on placement and we received wonderful feedback in regards to the work ethic, manner and presentation of our students. Many students were lucky enough to be offered part time work, whilst a couple of employers expressed interest in employing the student as a School Based Apprenticeship for 2016. A big congratulations must be given to all students who participated in the program. Newcomb Secondary College was represented in a most professional and positive light. Thank you to both Sue Hedley (Year 10 Leader) and Matt Horsted (SOSE Coordinator) for their assistance with the

organisation and workplace visits.

BUPA Aged Care Visit

Monday was the last visit from BUPA Aged Care residents for 2015. The residents have been working with Ms. Rob-erts’ art students to produce a mural about community.

A special thank you to Chris Kempers for bring the residents to Newcomb Secondary College to participate in the program. It has been a great experience for the students and the College looks forward to continuing the program in 2016.

Newcomb Students Get Court

On a recent Friday a group of Newcomb students went to the Geelong Magistrates’ Court. The first thing we needed to deal with was passing through a metal detector….who was the student needing further and more detailed testing? Fortunately, it turned out to be a belt buckle. Phew…We learnt that traffic matters are now dealt with only on Wednesdays with extra-judicial staff, so we were put into a courtroom without custodial facilities. The case there concerned a person who had breached a suspended sentence and as such would be sentenced to gaol for the rest of the suspended sentence as well as a sentence for the new offences. The court was closed and reconvened in a ‘custodial’ courtroom for the sentencing phase.

We moved to another courtroom and there were numerous people seeking to get licences back after bans for drink –driving. This was something of an eye-opener to the students as they were required to place interlock devices into their vehicles for lengthy periods of time and at great expense.

A number of cases were men seeking bail for a range of offenses involving assault, significant driving offences and theft. The students were surprised when few such requests were granted and those that were granted had significant conditions attached.

There was a chap who had a baby as a ‘prop’ for his bit of theatre. We were all confident that he had pinched the child to get crying so that he could use that as an excuse to leave the courtroom.

The female Senior Constable who was running a number of prosecutions gave the students a chance to ask any questions whilst the Court was in a short recess. This was good as valuable information about a range of things was forthcoming.

However, the case which had the students really fuming concerned a woman on welfare benefits seeking to have about $20, 000 of fines (some Court imposed) for a variety of offences including, but not limited to, 3 counts of driving whilst disqualified, 3 counts of driving an unregistered vehicle, speeding, numerous toll evasions and driving with unrestrained passengers under the age of 16.

She had a barrister who agreed that the case had been booked in and he had prepared. The case started and the barrister had NO documentation to support anything that was to be put, just the sworn evidence of the woman. Firstly, we learnt that she sent her kids to school regularly. However, this was soon tarnished as we discovered that the DHS was involved and made certain that she did just that. We further learnt that she had an income of some $1000 after rent was taken out by way of benefits. We learnt that she had fixed expenses which were rattled off including some $131 per week for her cigarettes. In short, the Magistrate took her evidence apart bit by bit. The barrister tried to lecture the Magistrate on an Appeal Court judgement, but this was dismissed due to specific questions asked at the start of the hearing. Finally, the Magistrate indicated that none of the defendant’s prior undertakings to courts had been satisfied in any way. She was instructed to pay various amounts by Bpay each fortnight until the entire amounts were paid off, regardless of the age she may be when done.

The students buzzed about these cases and the next class was full of lively discussion about the things we had seen. So, the best free entertainment may well be a day in Court.

AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS AND COMMUNICATION NETWORK INTERVIEW 2 IMPRESS Last Wednesday 11th November 15 Year 9 students attended an Interview 2 Impress workshop facilitated by the ABCN. The pro-gram took place at the Commonwealth Bank Head Office, located on Collins Street in the CBD. All students were awed by the size and high technology of the building. As part of the program all students were paired up with mentors who were Financial Planning Managers from CBA branches Victoria and Tasmania wide. Students participated in workshops that focused on being prepared for interviews, the importance of positive body language, how to overcome nerves, possible interview questions and mock interviews.

SAILING BY ASHLEIGH W

On the 22nd of October I went on the Outdoor Education sailing excursion for 2 days. On the first day Mr Mathews showed us a PowerPoint and explained the safety rules of sailing the boats. There were three jobs you could be. Crew 1 and 2 would swap jobs throughout the sail because they had to keep swapping the ropes over. Chloe and Taylah took on those roles and I was the skipper.

The skipper is the one steering the boat. At first I found it a bit tricky but by the end of it I got the hang of it. On the first day the wind was too strong so we had to come in early and pack everything up.

On day 2 Mr Mathews showed us a new way to turn and it was called the gybe. The first day we did the turns and that’s just when you push the tiller away from you until it turns to the other side of the wind. The gybe is when you pull the tiller towards you and the turn is more sharp and each time the boat nearly tipped.

The second day was a lot more fun because we got to stay out

longer and the wind wasn’t as strong. I thought we were going to capsize because at one point we were

so close to tipping. We were all screaming and laughing until the boat finally levelled out.

Grade 6 - Year 7 Transition Program

On Tuesday the 10th of November, Newcomb Secondary College began the annual Transition Program for students from Grade 6 coming to Year 7 in 2016. Students from 5 primary schools in the area attended with their parents. An afternoon tea was provided with Mr Shane Elevato introducing all the key staff that will be involved with the Year 7's in 2016. Students were then separat-ed to participate in some getting to know you activities and games and parents had the opportunity to speak with the Staff Leadership Team about any questions they may have about their child beginning at Newcomb Secondary College. After and Amazing Race challenge the students also had the opportunity to ask many questions around what it will be like for them at Newcomb Secondary College next year. The Transition Program has become an incredible opportunity for students to begin their first year at secondary school with more confidence and increased enthusiasm for school. Students have already met many new friends even before Orientation Day and these students have reported that they have lessened anxiety around starting their new education setting. Next week the students will be cooking with Mr. Amer!

Bike Tour – Tour de Alpine

Bike tour is now only two and a half weeks away. We’re looking forward to an amazing week. Tops are ordered, buses booked and accommodation confirmed! Fitness / Spin Classes – We hope you are riding regularly. You should be feeling the benefits of this and be looking

forward to the Tour. Mr Goward will be running a series of cycling spin classes at school over the next 2 weeks. These will be an excellent way of topping up the “post exams” fitness!!

Organised Training rides – We only have one organized training ride to go. The Sunday just gone saw us ride the local suburbs, heading past the Geelong Show Grounds, Breakwater, St Albans Park, and Pt Henry Rd to Alcoa – 34km in total. Students are now riding safely in their groups and getting used to the levels of communication re-quired on Tour. Mr Bath used an interesting tactic to get out of riding, managing to drive a nail through his front tyre and tube within a couple of hundred metres of the start!

Bikes and Equipment – For students on Tour, your bikes should be sorted now. They should be running right and being used regularly!! See Mr Unmack or Mr Goward to have your bike serviced or checked. (Jake, we’ll get yours right soon!)

Payments - Final Payment should have been made by now. (the goal was for the end of week 6) - Please remem-ber - all family accounts must be paid in full for students to be able to attend Bike Tour.

SLICE – The 6th food Group. – An incredibly important tradition on Bike Tour. Every student needs to bring about a 4 litre ice cream container worth of slice. Slice is brought out (with fruit!) at each of the stops and breaks along the way. The daily surprise of what type of slice will come out at each stop is one of the highlights along the way! We encourage all students to “google” a recipe and do the cooking. These slices need to be delivered either to school on Friday, or brought to the Train Station the morning we leave. You can’t go past a good Hedgehog slice in case you’re wondering!!

Facebook - All information (including this notice) will be posted on the Newcomb Secondary College Bike Tour page. Check it out.

Student Computers It can be a confusing task when trying to buy a suitable computer for students. In previous newsletters I have tried to help explain the computers available via our JB Education Portal. We have tried to do all of the hard work for you by selecting computers that we know will be suitable for school use. However, if you do want to go out and buy a computer on your own the article below may help you a little. The full article can be found at – http://beforeyoubuypc.intel.com.au/learn/smart-shopper/need-a-new-device-for-school Laptops and notebooks - mean pretty much the same thing, although some people consider laptops to be the larger models with screens of 15 to 17 inches, while notebooks are smaller siblings with screens sizes of 11 to 14 inches. Computer Processors - This tiny chip is the ‘brain’ of every computer, laptop and tablet. It is a key component that determines how fast the device will run and what type of apps it can handle. Intel’s range of 6th Generation Core processors includes the nimble Core i3, more powerful Core i5 and top-of-the-line Core i7 models. What’s the difference? The Core i3 is designed for a balance of performance and affordability: it’s great for email, web browsing and social media. The Core i5 packs the power you need for everyday work and play: choose this for mainstream productivity apps, watching HD videos and playing games. And the top-of-the-line Core i7 processor makes light work of heavy-duty tasks like 3D design, video editing and immersive 3G gaming. RAM - Shorthand for ‘Random Access Memory’. Generally, more RAM helps run apps faster, and generally speaking the more you have the quicker the device can switch between different files. Which can help your students get more done faster, at school and at home. When looking for RAM on a device, you may see a lot of acronyms, like DDR, DDR2 and even DDR3! But don’t be frightened off – what you really want to know is the number. When looking at a laptop for school, we think it’s worth considering at least 4GB of RAM, with 8GB for secondary students. (Depending on usage models.) Tablet RAM is usually around 1GB. Solid State Drives (SSD) – (All of our JB Computers have an SSD) Most desktops and older laptops rely on mechanical hard disk drives to store apps, documents, photos, music, videos and so on. Solid-state drive (SSD) technology replaces those spinning disks with digital memory chips. These SSDs tend to run faster than a mechanical hard drive, as well as being generally more resilient and less prone to damage if the laptop is dropped. (Because there are fewer moving parts to damage.) That’s a good feature to have in a school environment when students are constantly bolting between classes and heading off to sports and other activities. Chromebooks – (Note - Chromebooks are not a recommended device for use at Newcomb Secondary College) These lower-cost devices run Google’s own software and rely on the internet to do pretty much everything, including storing files and running basic Google apps.* Check with your school whether they are suitable, because they may not be able to run non-Google applications. For details of our JB Portal computers go to - http://www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au/Computers/student-computers
