Shooting the saints Principal's EditorialFinally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing." - (1 Peter 3:8-9, NIV)

Over the years I’ve often thought of this verse and thought of how people focus on the differences we have and then attack.

Different personality - attack. Different football club supporter - attack. Different race - attack. Different clothing or appearance - attack Different religion - attack. Different family - attack. Different … anything - attack.

Perhaps we need to focus on the things that we have in common. In 2Corinthians 6:18 Paul writes that God calls each of us his sons and daughters and promises to be a father to us all. When we recognise that each one of us is a child of God – then perhaps we can see things differently.

There was a time when the English and French were at war in colonial Canada. The bloke in charge of the British Fleet was Admiral Phipps, and he was ordered to anchor outside Quebec, a city on the St. Lawrence River. He was to wait for the coming of the British infantry and then they would join with the land forces in a combined attack. Because he arrived early, Admiral Phipps, had time on his hands, and he was annoyed by the statues of the saints that adorned the roof and towers of the cathedral. So he spent his time shooting at them with the ships' guns. How many he hit we don't know, but history recorded that when the infantry arrived and the signal was given for attack, the admiral found himself out of ammunition. He had used it for shooting out the saints.

I often wonder how much of our efforts are poured into fighting among ourselves over the minor issues, instead of uniting our efforts to attack the real enemy.

Jesus said that if we love him we would keep his commandments (John 14;15) and secondly that all men would know that we are his disciples if we have love to one another (John 13:35)

It’s worth a thought.

CooperationCooperation is the action or process of working together to the same end.

"Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up." - Ecclesiastes 4:12

Nurturing Young MindsThis Generation’s Maturity

The current generation gap has possibly never been greater, which makes our children even more vulnerable to the wanton material they are subjected to in various forms of media. Teens and tweens are also acutely aware of how ill informed adults are about their world, their challenges and find this endlessly frustrating. That’s why they turn to their peers, the media or the net for answers.

How parents can help?• Work on your child’s resilience.• Create a rich culture in the home

of friends and family of different generations, of interesting and unusual pastimes.

• Encourage interest in nature, different culture, sports and/or the arts.

• Teach your children that their body is theirs and needs to be valued.• Assist them to recognise toxic situations, and how to extract themselves.• Work out with children scripts to say no in language they would use..

{Time Doesn’t change a thing}

As time goes by Things change.

But there are some Things that

Never change at all A family heirloom

A Polaroid photo from The past

I found one Of my mother

And my grandmother Wearing a dress The same dress

It’s now in my wardrobe Hanging

It’s pink and black Beautiful patterns It will soon be my

Turn When I am

Thirteen Click!

Out it comes Into our photo album

Swish! I wipe off the dust

And slot it in The next generation

Is going to come Slowly

The dress will be Passed on

For generations To

Come.

Family Tree

We have a family album Like a family tree

A surprise to flip the pages The pictures we can see

From greats and grands Down the line we go

Reaching the awesome memories That we don’t even know

Look at my grandma’s dress Like a pretty gown

Me wearing shirt and shorts And on my face a solemn frown

Family homes of the past so small and dark

Their cute little dogs that don’t even bark

All this happened a long time ago Maybe 50 years or more

This valuable treasure will stay in my drawer

Year 7 PoetryOnce again, we are sharing some of the poems written during the Year 7 Poetry Unit. One of the tasks required of the students was to write a poem for the Whittlesea Show and the theme this year was “Generation to Generation” to commemorate 160 years of the Show. The three poems this week are responses to that theme.

Primary SRC 1,000 Voices Student Leaders MeetingThe members of the Primary Student Representative Council (SRC) attended a 1,000 Voices meeting on Tuesday 29th October.

1,000 Voices was supported by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the City of Whittlesea in order to develop community school based projects aimed at creating a more connected, healthy and caring society in Mernda. The SRC had the opportunity to work with other community members, both young and old, to collaborate their skills and passions in making our school community a better place for everyone.

The event involved meeting with students from schools in our local area to discuss how they can be great leaders in a multicultural setting.

Primary News

Generation to Generation

Sitting in my hand after passing through

the years after being through everything

love, joy and tears. It's so rusty

but loved by its owners.

Passing it down to me my mother cries

a waterfall of tears. An heirloom that has been

used so much.

As I slip it on my wrist I look and know it reminds me it's time to go.

Now I cry a waterfall of tears

as my daughter smiles.

Time flies by so fast and soon it's time

to pass it down again to another generation of love, joy and tears.
