Welcome Back We hope that everyone in the Newcomb Secondary College community was able to have an enjoyable time over the last two weeks.

Yesterday we had a College Assembly to start the term, to quickly reset the students into a school studying and learning mode after their holidays.

We also welcomed back Mrs McNamara, Ms Hedley, Mrs Hoddinott and Mrs George from their time on leave.

College Council The September meeting of the College Council took place on the last Thursday of last term.

Among the items discussed were the developments around the Pathways in Technology (PTech) initiative and the College’s Self Evaluation, which is part of our review year.

National Football League - 50th Super Bowl We are in discussions to recognize past student Ben Graham as a member of the NFL SuperBowl Honour Roll. We hope that Ben will visit his school in November. We hope to have more information to confirm this as soon as possible.

SCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND REMINDERS Students who don’t attend an excursion are expected to attend school as normal.

Parents are asked to not keep students at home.

Year 12 Computers Many of our current Year 12 students still hold a College owned Dell computer that was issued under a Federal Government scheme a few years ago. These computers MUST be returned to the College before students finish up at the end of their school year. Equipment to be returned includes – A Dell Notebook Computer, black zip case and a black power supply and cord. All of these items are to be returned to Mr Stephen Bath. Any damaged or missing items may incur a replacement fee. Students still needing to use their computer for school work may do so as long as Mr Bath is notified and the equipment is brought in for a check.

Facebook Newcomb Secondary College has a new official Facebook page. We will be updating it daily to let people know what is happening, and it will regularly have the newsletter and other information shared. Music News

Junior Music Camp Our Junior Music Camp held during the last three days of Term 3 at the Boomerang Holiday Ranch in Daylesford was extremely successful. The students worked extremely hard with excellent concentration to learn new music and further develop their skills in playing together as a band. We arrived at Daylesford just prior to lunchtime and got set up for rehearsals. We spent most of that afternoon learning new music with a couple of breaks to rest and kick the footy around. In the evening we had a very successful games night that was lead by Mr Crowther. This showed us how truly competitive our students are and that some of them were not going to give up no matter what the task (game) was or the difficulty level. On the second day we spent a lot of time rehearsing and walked to the springs. The walk and hill was quite a challenge for some of our students. On the Thursday night it was party night where the students participated in a masked parade and danced until their feet were sore.

Geelong Show – Senior Concert Band Performance The Senior Concert Band will be performing at the Geelong Show School Bands Competition next Thursday. Please ensure that all excursion forms and payment are returned to the General Office by Tuesday, 13th October. Telstra Grant We have received two instruments that were purchased through the Telstra Grant. A big thank you to Mr David Harrison, parent, who helped us organise this grant. We have purchased a new clarinet and trumpet with this grant.

SAVE THE DATE - Annual Music Concert THURSDAY, 19th NOVEMBER 7.30 PM The Annual Music Concert will be held this year on Thursday, 19th November in the College Hall. All students in the Year 7 Junior Band, Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Cold Fusion, Blues’n Jazz and VCE Ensemble will perform on this evening.

Year 10 student Shania on Thursday, 17th September became the Western Metropolitan Sports Region Champion for the 16-20 year old girls 1500m walk. Next stop, the State finals!! Well done Champ!!

Soon to be released in cinemas is the Australian movie "Oddball" about a radical idea to use Mareema dogs to protect little penguins from foxes off the coast of Warnambool. NOT RETURNING TO NEWCOMB SECONDARY COLLEGE IN 2016?

Could parents of 2015 Year 7 to 11 students who will NOT be attending Newcomb Secondary College in 2016, please notify the school as soon as

possible. This information will help the school in planning for 2016.

On Tuesday, 15th September there was a fast and furious game of student vs staff dodgeball. Year 12s vs staff and student teachers....... the score was Staff 9 to Students 5.

Hands on Learning Program During our Hands on Learning Program last year, students were responsible for building a baseball/softball cage for our outdoor PE area. This year, they are adding a 'bleacher' style grandstand so people can sit and watch when the cage is being used.

They have designed, welded, sanded and constructed through Term 3 and it should be ready for use during term 4. Good work guys.

Student Computers 2016 and Beyond

As you may be aware we are already in the planning stages for our 2016 school year. This means that a lot of work is being done on course planning and the associated booklist and resource needs. Over the past few years we have been making a big effort to reduce the costs to our families while still providing a quality and challenging education that leads on to successful pathways.

For the 2016 school year it will be expected that all students will Bring Your Own Computer Device (BYOD) for use at school as needed. In order for us to continue to reduce overall costs incurred through the annual booklist a number of measures have been put in place, however these rely on students having their own computer at school.

A number of booklisted text books will be available in digital eBook format at a cheaper cost than the printed version. These editions also come with access to online resources available on student computers.

A growing number of classes will be requiring students to enrol in online tutorials and courses. Many of these are free of charge to students and require a computer to access at school and at home. These may include – Maths Pathways, Language Perfect, Khan Academy, Studio Code.org. Google Education and Department of Education FUSE sites.

Xuno will continue to be used as a Learning Management System and a communication portal where student work is posted and may also be submitted online.

Students with their own computers have learning opportunities that are not otherwise available – up to date education software titles for all subject areas, access to cameras needed for photographs of work and class activities, easy saving and access of work for each class, ability to take work home for continued study, easy access to teacher messaging on Xuno as needed for class support and many more.

With the growing need for IT related skills in education and future workplaces we hope to work with all families to come up with the best way of providing student computers in 2016.

In order to support parents in providing a computer device there are two BYOD options.

Purchase a new computer through our JB Education Portal. These are a one off price with no more to pay.

Device 2 - LENOVO THINKPAD 11E 4GB/ 128GB SSD 1YR for $808.50 inc GST. Payment plans are available.

These computers include full education software package with Office 2013, virus protection and 50 educational titles as well as warranty and support for three years. Damage insurance is available.

Bring a device you already own and work with our IT support team to set this up for use on the College network. Limited support is available for these devices.
