INTERIM REPORTS

Interim reports will soon be mailed home – please spend some time reading

and discussing the report with your child.

These discussions show students that the significant adults in their lives will

follow their progress with interest and are powerful in helping students to

focus on their learning and to set goals for improvement.

R U OK? DAY Last week, our students and staff celebrated R U Ok Day - a national day of action that aims to prevent suicide by

encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about.

Staying connected with others is crucial to our general health and wellbeing. Feelings of isolation and being alone

are major contributing factors to depression and social issues that can ultimately result in suicide. Regular,

meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love.

Activities commenced on Wednesday with a sports team themed casual dress day and sausage sizzle provided by

our Student Representative Council. Money raised by the SRC will be donated to the One Hundred for 100

Campaign and the State School Relief Fund.

On Thursday staff shared a morning tea, and at lunch time students enjoyed R U Ok Day Cupcakes baked by Miss

Smith’s Women in Health class. Staff and students were entertained by Kaitlynn H (Year 12) and Alistair L (2012

Graduate) who performed a number of songs including Lean on Me. R U Ok stickers and Headspace information

were distributed to students.

SCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND REMINDERS

2014 SCHOOL MAGAZINE COVER COMPETITION We are running a competition to find the best design for our 2014 College Magazine. Students have been asked to

draw, sketch, paint or photograph their ideas for our front and back cover designs and hand them in for judging. A

panel will decide the best design and the winner will receive their magazine free of charge as well as a prize. The

winning designer will also be given a profile inside the magazine to recognise their contribution. The design entry has

been extended to Friday 10th October to give time during the holidays to work on submissions. See Mr Bath for

more details.

YEAR 12 COMPUTERS TO BE RETURNED All Year 12 students who have a school owned Dell notebook will need to return these to our IT department before

leaving school. This includes 1 x Dell Notebook Computer, 1 x Power Supply/Charger and 1 x Carry

Case. If this equipment is not being used right now please organise for it’s return as soon as possible

so we can check items off our list and clear students for exit. See Mr Bath for more details.

STUDENT BYOD COMPUTER INFORMATION SESSION All families are invited to our Bring Your Own Device computer information session to be held in the school Learning

Resource Centre on October 16th from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. Come along to see and try our new student

computers before having the opportunity to put in your order online. For more details refer to the flyer in this

HEALTH HAPPENINGS

They’re back…

Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on

humans for 10 000 years. You may be reassured to know that they are commonly found in places other than Newcomb

Secondary College.

Some of the reasons they have survived for as long as they have are:

The six legs of a louse end in a claw, allowing them to grip the hair.

They detect vibration and can hide - (conditioner will help fix this problem)

Head lice can ‘hold’ their breath for 20 mins – looking like they are dead.

The eggs are attached to the hair with a ‘glue’ like substance. Studies conducted on 45 different products to

dissolve the ‘glue’ showed nothing would dissolve it.

The good news…

We know where they live and we know how to find them.

If you follow these steps, once a week, the control of head lice in your home will be greatly improved.

Step1 Comb inexpensive hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair.

This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around;

Step 2 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue;

Step 3 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs;

Step 4 If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated;

Step 5 If the child has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are found,

you may not have to treat since the eggs could be from the old infection.

If your child has head lice – tell anyone who has had head to head contact with them and ask them to check their

family for head lice.

Sniff, Sniff!

Asthma and Hay Fever (Allergic Rhinitis) in Spring.

During Spring time plants, grasses and trees release pollens into the air. As a result, students who are sensitive to pollen may

find their asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis) symptoms worsening. During days of windy conditions or during thunderstorms

more pollen is released into the air. When breathed in these tiny particles penetrate the lungs.

Hay fever is very common during spring and as a result of the strong association between asthma and hay fever, those with both

conditions will often experience increased asthma symptoms during this time.

Tips to help students reduce asthma and hay fever symptoms during spring:

Ensure your child’s School Asthma Action Plan is up to date and returned to the school as soon as possible

Ensure all asthma medication is sent to school with your child each day

Let the school know if your child has pollen as a trigger for asthma or hay fever

Encourage your child to be aware of their own symptoms and to seek assistance when needed

An allergy is when the immune system reacts to substances (allergens) in the environment which are usually harmless (e.g. food

proteins, pollen, dust mites). Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction which is potentially life threatening. Anaphylaxis

is commonly caused by food allergies. Any food can cause an allergic reaction, however nine foods cause 90% of reactions in

Australia, these are: peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. hazelnut, cashew, almond), egg, cow’s milk, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and sesame.

Other causes of anaphylaxis include: insect stings and bites, medications, latex and exercise. Anaphylaxis affects the whole body,

often within minutes of eating the food. Symptoms may include the rapid spreading of hives, swelling of the face, lips and eyes,

vomiting, wheezing, coughing and loss of consciousness. The most serious symptoms are breathing difficulties and/or a sudden

drop in blood pressure which can be life-threatening.

What can you do to help your child support a classmate who is at risk of anaphylaxis?

Talk to you child about not sharing food with other students

Talk to your child about washing hands before and after eating

Talk with your child about not teasing those with allergies and sticking up for them if others tease or

bully them

Talk to your child about the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and the importance of getting an adult’s help if they see anyone

with these symptoms.

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIP.

Baker’s Delight in Drysdale are looking for a School-based Apprentice to

undertake their Certificate III in Food Processing (Bread).

This position has the definite possibility for the right applicant to enter a full

time apprenticeship after completing Year 12.

FAMILY ACCOUNTS Thank you to all the families who have paid their family account up to date.

There are a small number of families still with outstanding essential charges that are now

overdue. It would be appreciated if payment could be made by the end of term.

YEAR 12 NEWS -

APPLYING FOR COURSES THROUGH VTAC Remember to apply by 30 September; if you apply after

that the fee rises from $28 to $93!

EXTRA REQUIREMENTS – Don’t forget to check whether the course(s) you apply for through VTAC have

any extra requirements such as completing a supplementary form, a folio presentation, audition or interview. Fai

ure to meet any of these requirements will result in no offer of a place in 2015.

CHANGE OF PREFERENCE (COP) – When you apply for courses through VTAC you are not bound to

those preferences. You can change them as much as you like (without extra charge) until 24 October (as long as

you first apply by 30 September), then again from 24 November to 22 December. You will receive your ATAR

On Mon 15 December, so you have a week after that when you can still change your

VTAC preferences.

TAX FILE NUMBER – If you do not already have a Tax File Number (TFN) you are

advised to apply for one now. You will need it when you enrol in a tertiary course in

January.

VCE RESULTS AND ATAR VCE Results and ATAR Service will be available from

7.00am on Monday 15 Dcember. You can access your VCE results and ATAR via the internet, SMS and/or mail.

The SMS service is provied by Salmart Digital. SMS cost $1.10 max. (incl GST). Call 1800 501 083 for help with

SMS registration. You can register from 9am on Monday 10 November till midnight on Sunday 14 December.

DIPLOMA OF NURSING – This Diploma (also known as Enrolled or Division 2 Nursing) is offered at

some TAFE’s and also at some private providers. Some of these require a VTAC application (eg Box Hill,

Bendigo, Holmesglen, RMIT), while others require a direct application to the TAFE. You may also need to

sit the VETASSESS Nursing Test (see www.vetassess.com.au). The Diploma can be a pathway into Division 1

nursing at\ university (Registered nursing), giving credits towards the degree. You are advised to apply for the

Diploma if you think you may not achieve a high enough ATAR for the degree.

IGNITED SCHOLARSHIPS AT DEAKIN – Deakin is committed to attracting more top female students

to its information technology and engineering courses. Ignited scholarships are designed to

attract more female students into non-traditional areas of study and work. Scholarships are

awarded to successful applicants entering an undergraduate information technology or engineering

course in Deakin’s Faculty of Science,

Engineering and Built Environment. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000 per year. For details

GUARANTEED ATAR’s AT SWINBURNE – Swinburne has guaranteed ATARs for most

degrees. If a student achieves an ATAR equal to or above the guaranteed ATAR, and they’ve

listed that course as their highest successful preference through VTAC, their place in that course is guaranteed.
