Principal’s PenIn the World, but not!The thrill of scuba diving provides an ordinary person the opportunity to live in an environment that would
ordinarily end their life. By taking their own supply of oxygen, the diver is enabled to enter an unnatural realm
and travel safely.
There is an old saying that says Christians are meant to be “in the world but not of it”. The above picture can be
used to capture the essence of these words, and about what we are trying to do here at Cornerstone.
Romans 12: 2 “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person
by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and
perfect.” (NLT)
A recent chat with our Year 12s had us exploring how this relates to us, and I was delighted to see that they really
understood it. We do live in a world that, in many ways, can be a threat. Moral challenges, a godless mentality,
greed and selfishness are all around us, but we have been given the provisions to safely navigate the potential
minefields. We, if you like, have a scuba tank filled with God’s resources - his grace, his love, his wisdom and his
protection - that remains with us as we traverse through life.
It’s true that we learn, to a certain extent from our cuts and bruises and skinned knees, but both kids and adults
need to experience life with the tools God provides.
We are part of this world but we need to be ready to do battle with the temptations that it brings. It’s necessary
for our own good – but it’s not something we do alone. God’s business is transforming us and seeing us through
the difficult moments. When facing some of these things, we have the assurance of being able to breathe deeply
and safely into all that God brings for our journey.
Cornerstone aims to help your children breathe. To help them chart a course through life that allows them to
discover who they were created to be, and to learn what God’s will for their lives is. All in the safety of what he
has given us for the journey.

Swimming CarnivalsPrimary and Secondary schools have both recently participated in their annual faction swimming carnivals.Friday February 28th was the date for the Secondary Carnival. In a debut event for organiser, Mr Andrew Cleaver, a terrific day of friendly competition, team spirit and fun, in perfect weather was held. Under the leadership of Mr Caleb Murphy, the students participated in the traditional races, as well as a number of novelty events. Assisted by a team of amazing Year 10 students, it was another terrific day.The results for the Primary Carnival were:280 Benjamin 227 Reuben222 Naphtali 162 JudahSpecial thanks to the huge number of parent volunteers at both events, who made the days so successful. Also, thanks to our teaching team who helped in the roles of the day and for students whose behaviour and participation made for such successful events.
Form ReturnUnfortunately, a number of families have not returned their forms from the parent
pack that were due back in the first week of term. PLEASE consider this matter as now urgent. Your child’s involvement is some activities may be affected if this is not seen to.Further to this, discussion at a leadership level has made a decision regarding the ICT policy that was to be signed by parents and students across the College. The document is simply showing an understanding of the school’s requirements relating to the ICT areas of learning. Initially every student from Pre-Primary to Year 12 was to have signed this document AS WELL as parents. Whilst we would encourage every student to sign this document, for those in Year 2 and below, a parent may sign on their behalf. ALL STUDENTS in Year 3 to Year 12 must sign this document, as well as parents, or internet and computer useage will not be allowed for the students involved. Please action this as soon as you are able to eliminate the risk of your child missing out on areas of learning as a result.
Notification of DepartureWith waiting lists growing for places at the College, please remember to advise the office if you are aware that your children will be departing from Cornerstone. There is a requirement to provide one terms notification, and failing to provide this does have a term’s fees added to your account.
Boys and the Internet‘Parents often ask me how to protect their boys from looking at unhealthy sites on the internet. I have previously taught Computing in schools for 7 years, then owned and operated a computer shop in town for 11 years, spending time cleaning up the mess created when computers are used to view pornography. I am also an elder in my local church and have been involved in helping men who have developed a habitual pattern of viewing pornography. As the father of two teenage boys I am highly aware of the pitfalls that exist when boys use the Internet.I would like to share some of the knowledge I have gained over this time to help you keep your own boys safe when they access the Internet. This is relevant to Mums, Dads, anyone who is responsible for raising boys and loving the men they become.’Glen Saw.When: You can attend either Tuesday 18th March or Friday 21st March, 7:00pm. Where: Cornerstone Christian College Library.
Parking in WaratahThe College is currently working with the City of Busselton to resolve some of the concerns parents have over safety and parking in Waratah Court. Angle parking and a footpath are to be installed.Until the work occurs, can parents who park in Waratah PLEASE reverse park in, which will provide a safer visual exit when departing and hopefully avoid injury to children who may be walking down the street. Thanks for your help. We know you love your kids and want them safe.

Study Tips from Miss Needham’s Desk
Hosting French StudentsFor the last 8 years a programme has been in place offering the opportunity to young French students aged 16-17 years to discover Australia and its education system.Opportunities currently exist to host a student. Host families will be visited prior to the arrival by the organiser to explain the programme.Such an exchange is also highly beneficial for our Modern Languages students, opening their eyes (and ears!) to similarly minded students for an extended period. Please contact Martine Floyd, email : [email protected], mob : 0403 019 609 if you are interested in hosting.
Parent AssembliesOn February 27th, the first Primary Parent Assembly of the year was held, hosted by Miss Haythornthwaite’s Year 5 class. They did so well
and delighted us with their performance. The next Assembly is this Thursday, March 13th. It will be hosted by Mr Meyerink’s Year 5/6 class, at 2:00pm in the Auditorium. We’d love to see you there.
Primary Beach CarnivalThis week our Year 1 to Year 3 students will hit the beach for their Beach Carnival. This is always an enormously popular and supported event with many parents on hand to cheer and assist. We look forward to yet another terrific day together on our beautiful foreshore.
YAC NewsletterThe City of Busselton Youth Advisory Committee has a newsletter they produce, and wished to advise that interested families can collect a paper copy of this document from our front office.
Every parent and teacher would like to see students achieving their personal academic best at school. Knowing how to work efficiently can help students navigate the mire of academic demands in secondary school in a stress-free way. 1. INDEPENDENT LEARNING: There are two types of work in secondary school. The compulsory work your teacher tells you to do, and independent learning that you are expected to do when you have no homework. This includes making study notes and working on assignments that are due later in the term.2. WORK SMART: Keep your personal life and schoolwork separate. Don’t do work in front of the TV, switch off your phone and Facebook. Work in half hour blocks and focus only on your schoolwork during that half hour block.3. BE ORGANISED AND PLAN: Being organised
makes your life easier! So have an organised space to work in, record homework in your diary, keep track of completed work and reschedule work not done. 4. ASK FOR HELP EARLY: If you don’t understand something, ask for help. The sooner the better. 5. LEARN HOW TO STUDY PROPERLY: If you still think that to study for a test you just read your
book over and over, time to learn how smart people study! Make study notes or summaries first, learn these notes not just by reading but by testing yourself on them and do as many different questions as you can as practise.
So learn more this year about how to improve your results and be more efficient
and effective with your schoolwork by working through the units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au . Our school’s access details are:

Board ShortsSo what’s happening in the board room at the moment?Well the school keeps growing and this is causing us to think long term. And by long term I don’t mean 10 weeks! We need to work out how the school can grow effectively and cater for these growing numbers. This raises all kinds of questions including: use of Dunsborough land, current campus constraints, new land opportunities and probably the biggest one being how do we pay for all of this. As many of you would know, land and buildings don’t come cheap and everything we look at is in the multiple million dollar mark. The biggest challenge is hearing what God wants for the college and then creating a plan to achieve this, and that is not easy. These are all big decisions and generates big prayers. We would ask that you pray for the board members as we tackle these items.
