RIO+ assesses Public Health Impacts of Bolsa Família programme

RIO+ Centre took the stage on October 31st to discuss the effects of Brazil's internationally renowned 'Bolsa Família' cash transfer programme on improving public health. In celebration of the programme's 10th anniversary, the event was attended by President Dilma Rousseff, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and several state ministers, including Tereza Campello, from the Social Development ministry. Improving Sustainable Agriculture

- RIO+ director Rômulo Paes de Sousa was a keynote speaker on the topic of “Improving Statistics for Food

Security, Sustainable Agriculture, and Rural Development” at the International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS), held in Rio de Janeiro, 23-25 October. Sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Statistics Division, Brazil's Ministry of Planning and Brazil's statistics institute IBGE, the conference convened senior agricultural statisticians from all over the world, mainly representatives from national statistical offices and ministries of agriculture. UN People’s Podium Debut

- The RIO+ Centre supported, on November 8, the international debut of the “People’s Podium”, brought to Rio by the JCI (Junior Chamber International) World Congress 2013 to help capture voices from the 3000 youth attending the conference from over 110 countries. Read the full article.

The Path to a Post-15 agenda

- On November 11 the RIO+ Centre participated in a discussion panel in Brasilia to debate the paths for the post-15 agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The RIO+ deputy-director Layla Saad talked about the strong points and shortcomings of the MDGs, suggesting ways to move on with the debate. More details in the Newsletter No3.

Development meets earth

- RIO+ Centre policy specialist Leisa Perch analyses the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) from the perspective of land use policy. The article was published on UNDP’s magazine Revista Humanum. - RIO+ Centre was featured in a Correio Brasiliense’s article on sustainability reports, in late October. Director Romulo Paes de Sousa talked with the newspaper about the RIO+ 20 Outcome Document and its recommendation that more companies use this kind of report to communicate the impacts of their social and environment actions and policies. The World Centre for Sustainable Development (RIO+ Centre) is a legacy of the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development and was set up to inspire and inform policies and practices that lead to greater social, environmental and economic justice. It works with governments, civil society and the private sector to stimulate dialogue and action on alternative development pathways. As a global centre based in the south, RIO+ aims to bolster South-South Cooperation and facilitate the participation of the global south in international efforts on sustainable development.
