Social Inclusion Week
By Brianna Burns
Last week was a surprising week for me. When I heard about social inclusion week on Tuesday we got
called over to talk about it with Bev, Henry, Cathy and Heather.
Bev is an author and Henry is her guide dog. I was surprised at first but we learned a lot. Like if you see
Bev and Henry and want to say hello to Henry you don’t approach him, you ask Bev first and she’ll say yes
or no.
They came to our school to explain about social inclusion week, including people that may be different or
not and that it’s fair to include people every day.
When we see an angry dog—
1) Stand still
2) Hands down
3) Quite as a mouse
4) Look at the ground
To pat a dog—
1) Walk up slowly and stop
2) Ask the owner if you can pat the dog
3) Put you hand out so the dog can smell you
4) Stroke gently
Today K-3 were visited by Leonie and her dog Bonnie. Children learnt about the care of pets and how to be safe around animals, particularly dogs.
