Burl Tichenor from Digital Wood Carver was our September
3 speaker. He brought one of his more portable machines
and gave an interesting intro to CNC carving. He also
brought some very impressive examples of CNC projects.

I didn’t list all 13 books that we added to the library last month (Don’t want to overwhelm
everyone). For those period furniture aficionados, we have American Furniture Of The
18th Century by Jeffrey Greene. That’s good, but even better is Measured Shop Draw-
ings For American Furniture by Thomas Moser. Finally, we have Windsor Chairs, An Illus-
trated Handbook by Wallace Nutting. I expect a couple of our intrepid period furniture
folks will be standing at my table around 7:00 pm to check them out. Now don’t crowd.
For the more mundane woodworker, like me, we have some good books as well. William
Spence and Duane Griffiths wrote Furniture And Cabinet Construction and if that isn’t
enough, we also have Building Cabinet Doors And Drawers by Danny Proulx. For wood-
working basics, we have added The Table Saw Book by Kelly Mehler. For everything you
ever needed to know about woodworking, we suggest The Complete Manual Of Wood-
working by Albert Jackson, David Day, and Simon Jennings. All in all, I think these repre-
sent a fantastic addition to the library, bringing our total library to 675 books.
Annual Election of Officers - November 5 Meeting
In accordance with FVWWC by-laws, the Board will present a slate of officers for 2020 to
the membership at the October 1 meeting. The final slate of nominees will be voted on at
the November 5 meeting. At present, all the present board members are willing to serve
another year, but all positions are fair game and nominations for any of the board posi-
tions will be accepted from the floor at the November meeting. If you are nominating
someone other than yourself, please get the nominees approval before doing so. Offering
to be a co-chair or backup for a position would be a good way to transition into a regular
board position.
Let Tom Sharp or any of the board members know if you want to volunteer for any
of these positions.

Da Big Raffle
PRESENT RAFFLE
The raffle for the shop light accessories will continue for one more month. The drawing will take place at the November meeting. As you can see from the photo this is a series of lighting instruments to improve or add to your workshop experience. If you need to update or add to your shop lighting you should buy a raffle ticket. Take a look at the items and picture a brighter you. As usual, tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 and the raffle is for members only.
1. A 7500 lumen 4 foot shop light that plugs in and is linkable with other shop lights (up to 4). Hanging hardware is included.
2. A 4400 lumen LED utility light. This will screw into any standard socket and has a shroud to reflect light downward. It replaces 3-100 watt bulbs
3. A dual power LED task light that plugs in or runs on a battery. It has a flexible neck and can be moved from tool to tool as needed. It mounts by magnet or clamp.
4. If the power goes out call Com Ed and then grab this 1500 lumen camping lantern. It has a 160 hour battery life (batteries included).
5. And finally for those constant electricity failures there is a 3000 lumen LED flashlight. It is a compact unit with a very bright, white light pattern. This is one of those small flashlights with a monstrous beam. (batteries included).

New Lake Erie Toolworks Discount
I wanted to pass along an update to share with your woodworking club members as to how we will be handling their 10% discount for tools purchased online from our Lake Erie Toolworks website (www.LakeErieToolworks.com) moving forward. Instead of using the discount code previously provided for your use, the member can simply leave an online note during the checkout process referencing the Fox Valley Woodworkers Club and we will then issue a 10% discount that will be refunded back to the member’s credit card. Same gener-ous discount, slightly different process. Note that we also offer a totally Risk Free Guarantee where if the member is not satisfied with any product purchased from us, they just need to notify us within 30 days of receipt to process a full re-fund and we'll even pay for return shipping. President’s Sawdust
Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully
always entertaining.
Tools for the wife
Recently I took a class at Marc Adam’s School of Woodworking. Great class, I learned a lot, and the food
was great. The class used a lot of the typical tools we woodworkers use and we were given a tool list of
items to bring with us. Hence, the problem at home emerged. Mrs. Sharp had decided to do a little redec-
orating in the bedroom while I was gone. This included hanging new curtains and changing out the curtain
rods to hold them.
The call came mid-week. She wanted to know where she could find a little drill to make some holes to se-
cure the curtain rods. She wanted to know where the small twelve volt drill was. She abhors the bigger
eighteen volt drills, let alone the dreaded corded drill. The good wife also wanted to know where some
small drill bits were.
“I have the drill and the drill bits”, I said. “I’m using them for the class.”
She couldn’t understand this. “Doesn’t that school have tools there”, she asked?
I told her they did but it was easier to have your own at the ready instead of finding where the schools
were at. Plus, I was used to my own tools and they felt better to the hand than a different brand of the
same type. “Yea, but that leaves me with none to use”, she argued.
“I think I broke one of your drill bits too,” she confessed, explaining she used what I later found out was a
countersink bit to do the job. Turns out the allen key was not tight on the bit and the portion that cuts the
countersink had slid down the drill bit. After acting like I had lost a thumb from this terrible tragedy, I said I
could buy another. Of course, I told her such items could only be bought in complete sets and I couldn ’t
just buy the one she broke. One must take whatever advantage there is to acquire more tools.
This whole scenario exposes a number of issues. There are at least five drills and 4 sets of drill bits in the
shop. Of course, Murphy’s Law along with a woman’s prerogative says the one I have is the one my love
wants. Another problem is the missus doesn’t know where all the other drills and bits are located. Lord
knows rummaging through every door and cabinet to find what she wants is not a good idea. There are
things in the shop I don’t want her to touch let alone know that I own. Making an itemized list and where
they are located in not a good solution either. I don’t think she would recognize the proper name of the
tools. Plus, I may have them somewhere else just like I did during the class.

The answer is simple. Give her a set of tools of her own, put her name on them, and paint the handle pink.
I can put them in the garage in a separate toolbox. The cost will be well worth it. My tools will be intact,
the queen will know where to look to find what she wants, and I don’t have to worry about her discover-
ing things in my shop that are secret. On top of all that, it will be handy and fun to use her new tools for
household jobs.
Upon this writing, I found there are ready made kits on Amazon already put together. They’re even col-
ored pink. Pick up one of these for your better half and use an engraver to put her name on all of the piec-
es. They could come in handy for that next project when you need a few tools. Just don’t let her know
you are using them.

It’s Kind of Like Magic
In some ways, woodworkers are like magicians. We can transform some of the
scroungiest looking wood into useful items and even things of beauty once in
awhile. I am sure each of you could give a great example of this magic.
My example is a garden bench my wife “commissioned” me to make for our patio.
This bench will live outside in the elements and I started thinking I would make
the bench out of cedar. After viewing the cedar supplies available at the local big box stores, I real-
ized that I would not be able to find enough decent cedar to build the bench. The legs and arms are
2 1/2 inches thick and seat rails are all 1 1/4 inches thick. None of the local stores carry clear cedar
this thick and I did not want to risk special ordering it sight unseen. Plan B was to make the bench
out of White Oak which is abundant, fairly weather resistant and available at area sawmills. First
stop was Kirkland sawmill. Their supply of thick and wide White Oak was sparse and a bit pricey—
pretty much all they had was too thin, kiln dried, and already surfaced S4S. Next, I stopped by
Meyer in Batavia to see what he had. His prices are very good, but like Kirkland, his kiln dried stuff
was too thin and already planed to thickness. Then he took me to his outdoor stacks of oak planks
which are rough-sawn and air dried. It is pretty nasty looking wood with plenty of spider egg sacs,
bird poop, and just plain dirt. Nevertheless, the price was right and after some rearranging of the
wood stack with his fork-lift truck, I went home with a dozen or so White Oak planks around 2 inches
thick and 9 feet long. After a thorough cleaning in the garage with the shop vac the wood was
allowed into my basement shop. The photo below of some cutoffs gives you an idea of what it
looked like.

.
The magic part is how nice and beautiful the oak turned out after jointing and planing. So far, I
have only completed the sides of the bench, but all these parts came from that scroungy looking
White Oak.
