Band News It is great to see so many band students remembering their instruments and music on a Monday. As of this week, all band students will receive a term timetable. Each week they need to fill this sheet in weekly and record how much time they spend practicing each day. This has been explained to all members of the band. It will also need to be signed by a parent/caregiver and brought back to band for me to check each Monday.

Next P&C Meeting – Monday, 15 August at 6.30pm in the staffroom annexe.

Kid’s Ark East Timor Money is collected Mondays. This week we collected $3.00.

On Thursday, 28 July Parkes Public School Stage 3 boys - Austin, Braith, Harmih, Jake, Joseph, Lachlan, Kaiden, Ryan, Will and Zac attended the Schools’ Eco Day at the Central West Livestock Exchange in Forbes. Will learnt about which traps are illegal because they trap native animals like the platypus and native fish at the Fisheries stand. Braith liked how they tracked the feral animals, kept records and humanely destroyed the feral animals. Austin commented on how tiny the eggs and baby worms were when we made a worm farm for our school. The worms will even eat cotton undies and T-Shirts! During the tour of the cattle and sheep yards Cooper (our Guide) told us that they have the automatic crush. Everyone enjoyed the tour of the livestock exchange. Joseph liked the worm farms and how worms have saddles for their eggs. He liked the weed spraying because it was interesting. Kaiden learnt that not all snakes are deadly. The most deadly was the fierce Taipan snake. For first aid use a pressure bandage because it will give you seven hours of extra time to get help. Jake got over half his fear of snakes. He held the tail of the python and then he slowly worked his way up to the head!

Thank you to Mrs Tanswell for accompanying us on the day and a special thank you to all the boys for their Responsible, Respectful and Safe behaviour. I was called back to each stand (after the boys had left) and each person congratulated me on how well - mannered and well behaved Parkes Public students were. Mrs Ward

Welcome to Week 3!

This term has started with a bang! We have already had a number of events on including our Boys’ Hockey and Football teams competing in the PSSA Knockout along with our Rugby League team. We have had our Book Fair and dress up day, Landcare Eco-Day, Planet Ark tree planting day and the NED show, all in the first two weeks of term!

We are looking forward to a busy, fun range of learning opportunities over the next few weeks also as we will celebrate Public Education Week with our whole school assembly and open classrooms, Year 6 will travel to Canberra, we will host the Lachlan District Athletics carnival at North Parkes Oval, we will hold our annual Jump Rope for Heart day, continue with Tournament of the Minds team preparations, have a visit from the ABC and Behind The News to look at our Wiradjuri language program and continue inspired teaching and learning in our classrooms!

The PREPs program commenced yesterday Monday, 1 August, providing a warm welcome and a chance to become familiar with school for our 2017 Kindergarten students. Each year this program has been enormously successful in preparing our children to commence the exciting learning journey that is school. We look forward to working with you to ensure that starting school is a positive, engaging experience for the children and their families. Please don’t hesitate to contact us on 6862 1702 if you have any queries.

We had an amazing performance from the NED show last week! All the students were enthralled and excited by Nate’s yo-yo tricks and messages. Don’t forget that yo-yo orders can be brought into school anytime up until Wednesday morning. All yo-yos will be delivered to classrooms by Wednesday afternoon.

Have a great week, everyone!

Mr Smith

Value of the Week - Honesty What is Honesty? Being honest is being open, trustworthy and truthful. When people are honest, they can be relied on not to lie, cheat, or steal. Honesty is telling the truth. It is admitting mistakes even when you know someone might be angry or disappointed. Being honest means that you don’t pretend to be something you are not. With honesty, you can trust things to be as they appear.

Affirmation I am honest. I can be trusted to keep my word. I admit my mistakes. I tell the truth, kindly and tactfully. I have no need to impress others. I accept myself as I am.

The Parkes Public School Rugby League Team travelled to Forbes on Thursday to take on Forbes Public School in round three of the PSSA knockout competition. Parkes went into the game full of confidence after their previous game, where they were impressive winners over Forbes North Public School.

The game became a real arm wrestle in the early stages, with teams matching each other try for try. Unlike the previous game, where Parkes ‘hit the accelerator’ in the second half, Parkes came out looking very tired on the back of plenty of defensive efforts. Forbes played the game at a frantic pace. The Parkes boys tried hard, but ran out of steam, allowing Forbes to capitalise on a lop-sided possession rate. Forbes Public School was eventually victorious by a margin of three tries.

Wilson Duffy was creative in attack, setting up some wonderful scoring opportunities. Austin MacGregor ran well and always looked dangerous with the ball in hand. The Moody boys displayed courage, defending admirably in the centre of the

field against some much bigger opposition. Wrecking balls, Jake Barnes, Henry Johns, Jayden Pope and Harmih Turnbull tried hard to punch holes in the defence throughout the match. The outside backs, including Hunter and Sterling Green, Ashton Bennie and Brian Mendoza, had limited opportunities with the ball, but foiled many wide running attacking raids by the opposition. Kaid Lydford was kept very busy playing fullback, cutting down many Forbes runners. Harry Jones, Rhys James and Ewan Moody were also very valuable members of the side, effectively slipping into positions when brought on throughout the game.

A big ‘thank you’ to the parents for transporting students and showing great support on the sidelines and to Mr Moody for his valuable assistance and input.

This ends our involvement in PSSA Rugby League for 2016. Thank you to all of the boys for their commitment and effort this year.

Mr Roberts, Parkes Public School Rugby League Coach
