Dear Parents and Caregivers The temperature is dropping, that’s for sure which is not such good news if like me you don’t enjoy winter that much. On the other hand if you like snow skiing then this is the best change in the weather for you. Just a reminder that for winter sports it is mandatory to ensure you have paid any sports fees before your child plays. The amount the school has to pay to secure teams in various competitions has increased markedly over recent years and given the size of our school it is impossible for us to carry this debt for you. Some children will receive reminder notices so please action these or make contact with the school office to arrange a regular payment plan. Saturday or out of school sports and activities are not unfortunately covered by the school’s operations grant in the same way core curriculum is and this is why a cost is incurred. Many thanks again for the marvellous feedback in regard to the conversations I have had with groups of children over the past couple of weeks. Because we try to live the ‘Second Home’ beliefs it is important that from time to time we remind children of our expectations of them not just in terms of academic matters but also about life skills. Many would say how we relate to others, the respect we show and the way we treat those around us is as important as anything else that happens at school and I would agree with this. A number of you are parents have talked with me about this and said these are just the things you are focussing on at home too. We are moving closer and closer to the beginning of our next building redevelopment, that being rooms 1 – 3. The more detailed plans are not too far away now and we hope once these have arrived to make them available for you. As we get closer to the process beginning I will inform you in a more detailed way about the temporary changes we will need to make for some rooms location as building work starts Congratulations to all those who were successful in the recent Board of Trustee Elections, good on you for opting in and stepping up. I look forward to working with you. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

MEASLES UPDATE There is currently an outbreak of measles affecting three Waikato schools. As of 18 May 2016 there have been 22 confirmed cases with a further 9 under investigation. To date, there are no confirmed cases in the Bay of Plenty or Lakes districts. However, this is an important reminder for parents to ensure their children are up to date with their immunisations. Measles immunisation is free and is the best way to prevent measles. Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is 99% effective in preventing measles. The MMR vaccine is given as part of the usual childhood immunisations at 15 months of age and at 4 years of age. If any, or both, of these immunisations have been missed, it is not too late to catch up. If there is an outbreak of measles at a school, students who have not had their immunisations may be required to stay at home for two weeks (or longer) to ensure they don’t pass measles on to others. For more information please go to: www.ttophs.govt.nz/measles Measles can be serious but fortunately it is easily preventable through immunisation. Thank you for your assistance with helping to prevent the spread of measles to our communities.

Massey University Biological Monitoring Study to Measure Levels of Environmental Chemicals In New Zealand Children Environmental pollution such as heavy metals and synthetic chemicals can be found in soil, air, water around the world. Every human in the world is exposed to pollution to varying degrees and carries traces in their body. The past decades have seen many successful efforts to reduce the levels of pollution in our environment, such as better control of industrial waste discharges. This study will show whether these efforts have been successful and indicate where more work is needed. Your child is invited to take part in a study measuring levels of environmental chemicals in their bodies. These chemicals include metals (such as lead, mercury, arsenic), cotinine (indicating exposure to tobacco smoke), additives to consumer products (such as triclosan, fluoride, sunscreen active ingredients, parabens), and components of plastics (such as bisphenol A and phthalates). If your child participates in the study we will measure these chemicals in their blood and urine, and provide you with individual testing results free of charge. Information sheets are available at the school office.

SPORTS NOTICES / RESULTS Hockey : Flames Yr 4/5 : Played two 20 minute games. First game against Papamoa white lost 3-0 then against Mount Storm lost 4-0. They played well for their first games for the season. They played better in their second game with positions and defence with lots of passing. Rattlers Yr 3/4 : Unfortunately the Rattlers were playing a Year 5/6 team and lost their games 6-0 and 4-0. But despite the disadvantage they did dig deep and gave it their best shot Yr 7/8 11 Aside : A win against Mt Intermediate B, 9-1 First full game, good use of the field just need to work on looking where to pass and calling. Basketball : Pongakawa Raptors: Yr 1/2 Little League First game for the season. A great start with all players so enthusiastic to take the court. POD: Taurei Puru - for his energy levels trying really hard on attack and defending. Practise will be every Monday at lunch time. Game tonight at 4.30pm, ASB Stadium on Court 6B. Looking ahead, the remaining games for the season will be played at 4.00 pm. I will send out a copy of the games so you are able to plan ahead. Pongakawa Panthers: Yr 5/6 A loss but only just, a hard fought game, well done. Pongakawa Raiders: Yr 5/6 A great win for your first game, awesome teamwork. Top scorer was Peta with 10 points! Pongakawa Bone Crushers: Yr 3/4 A win, lots great intercepting and passing, well done. Futsal : A correction for last weeks game between the Cobras and the Makos. It was the Cobras who were victorious and won the game; not the Makos as previously reported. Congratulations! There are such a lot of year 3/4 students now playing futsal so we are going to split into 4 teams and play half court games (the correct court size for this age group) from next week. Exciting to see game skills growing and some great team play to score goals. Wins last week to year 3/4 Black, Cobras, Panthas, Baba Clan and Mischief Makers. Games this week : 3:30 - all year 3/4 games, 4:00 – Cobras v Panthas, 4:30 – Kickers v Mako, 5:00 – Baba Clan v LL, 5:30 – Mischief Makers v Soccer Girls.
