Based on suggestions from Alumni, we have started uploading individual photographs in the
Online Alumni Directory. We have only received a small number of photographs, so could we
request all alumni to please send us your passport size photograph if you have not done so already
as a soft copy to . Please do write to us if you have any queries in this
connection.
Refrigerators for Alumni House
The batch of 58 came for a class get-together in Feb. 2013 and stayed in the Alumni House. Dr.
Alice Kuruvilla, the class representative made an extra effort and the class has donated 11 mini
refrigerators and are hoping to provide the remaining two as well. Dr. Devaprasath Jeyasekharan
(1971 batch) & Dr. Renu Devaprasath (1972) had earlier donated 10 mini refrigerators.

Dr. Dheepak Selvaraj (1989) was given the 'Best Teacher Award' by the Tamil Nadu Dr.
M.G.R. Medical University on November 24, 2012 at the Silver Jubilee commemoration day
celebrations.

The Week Magazine ranked CMC as the third best Multi Speciality Hospital in India in its
annual 'Best Hospital Survey 2013'.
Dr. Premila Abraham (PG alumnus), Professor of Biochemistry has been awarded the National Women Bioscientist Award (Young category) by the Department of Biotechnology for her work entitled
Dr. Jayaraman Gowrishankar (1972 Batch) and Dr. Ganesh Kumar Mani, MCh.(Thoracic) (PG - 1977 Batch) have been individually honoured Government of India on Republic Day 2013 under the discipline of Science & Engineering and Medicine respectively.
Dr. Nitin S. Kekre (PG Alumnus), Prof. of Urology was honoured by the Urological Society of
India with the President's Gold Medal at the 46th Annual Conference held at Pune.
Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Professor and Head of Gastrointestinal Sciences and Head of the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory has been appointed Independent Director on the Board of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). This is a not - for - profit, Government of India Enterprise set up by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, to foster innovation research and entrepreneurship. BIRAC aims to empower and enable the biotech innovation ecosystem for affordable product development.
Dr. Arpit Mathew (1995 Batch),[s/o Drs.M.C. Mathew & Anna Mathew (1968 Batch)] was
honoured with the Best teacher Award for 2012 from CMC, Ludhiana.
Dr.Nihal Thomas (1982) has been selected to the Editorial Board of the International Journal Clinical Endocrinology.
Dr. T. Samraj, former Associate Director and Head of Dentistry received the 'Shyam Lal
Saksena Memorial Award' in recognition of his exploration of a blend of pedagogic pinciples and modern medical /dental education technology at the 53rd Annual Conference of the National Academy of Medical Sciences held at Jodhpur.
Dr. V.Rajshekhar,(1975), Professor of Neurosurgery was honored with the Swasth Bharat
Samman Award 2012 in the Healthcare (Neurology) category. The Award, instituted by Zee
Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad on March 9, 2013 in New Delhi.
Dr. Prema Dhanraj (PG Alumnus), former Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery was honored with the the Swasth Bharat Samman Award 2012 in the Healthcare (Healing with Human Touch) category. The Award, instituted by Zee News and LIC, was presented to Dr.

The President and the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have decided to award the Fellowship ad hominem to Prof. Benjamin Joseph (1967) in recognition of his work in Paediatric Orthopaedics in India and abroad.
Dr. Gita Mathai (1969) received 5 gold medals; 1 silver; 3 state records at the Tamil Nadu Masters Aquatic meet 2013. She also came first in the women's veteran division of the Hyderabad Deccan Chronicle 10 K. total 10000 runners overall rank 1246.
Dr. Prathap Tharyan, Professor of Psychiatry & President of CMC Alumni Association has
been invited to be a member of the WHO advisory panel on International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP).
Dr. Priya Abraham (1981), Professor of Virology has been invited to be a member of the
Dr. Samuel Philip Oommen (1991), Developmental Paediatrics Unit has been appointed Core Member, Independent Expert of the Technical Resource Groups of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram in the Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
Dr. Rita Aaron (nee Isaac) (1976) has been honored with the `Outstanding Trainee
being a model trainee by the NIH Fogarty International Centre.
Dr. B. Wesley was honoured by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh as outstanding Christian Leader in the field of Medicine in the State of Andhra Pradesh at a ceremony organized by organized by the State Christian Minority Finance Corporation
Dr George Cherian, (1950) and former Head of Cardiology Department at CMC was awarded
the Lifetime Achievement award by the Cardiological Society of India.
CMC Vellore has been awarded the NABH Accreditation with effect from 22nd December 2013 to 23rd December 2016.
REUNION 2013 The Medical Alumni Reunion was held in Vellore from 8th to 10th August, 2013. Over 175 alumni
from various parts of the world returned to their to take part in the celebrations. The special
batches this year were 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983 and 1988.
The celebrations commenced with a CME session on August 8. The speakers were Dr. Soumya
Ghosh (1973), Dr. Amitava Biswas (1978), Dr. Anil Cherian (1983), Dr. Kirti Shetty (1983) and
Dr. Mariam Priya Alexander (1988). The following day, in a session intended for the students, the
representatives of the special reunion batches shared their experiences. The alumni who spoke
included Dr. David Thomas (1953), Dr. Ajit Singh and Dr. Stanley Cecil Macaden (1963), Dr.
Solomon S. Chelliah (1973), Dr. Olinda Timms (1978), Drs. Sunil Gokavi and JoannaWilliams
(1983), Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhya and Dr. Madulika Jonathan (1988).
The General Reunion on 10 August, 2013 began with tree planting and an open meeting in the
Scudder Auditorium. Dr. Premal Das (1978) was presented the

The Alumni Association presented the to Dr. A.S.Balasubramanian,
former Professor of Neurochemistry and Mrs. Jyothi Balasubramanian, former Hindi teacher,
Vidyalayam, in recognition of their immense contribution to education on our campuses and for
the high quality of scientific research and moulding of young minds. At the General Body Meeting
of the Alumni Association, the new office bearers elected were Dr. Vinod Joseph Abraham (1989)
as Secretary, Dr. B. Selvamani (1986) as Treasurer and Dr. Joy Mammen (1987) as Entertainment
Secretary. Dr. Priya Abraham, Dr. Smitha Jasper and Dr. Judy Ann John handed over their
offices and were given a certificate of appreciation for their distinguished services. At the
Thanksgiving Service in the College Chapel, Dr. Vijaykumar Edward (1973) gave the message.
The newest batch of alumni, the current interns, were given the charge to serve and not to seek to
be served. The Chapel Bell, a gift from the batch of 1978, was also dedicated on the occasion.
