AND WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT THE SENIOR MEN’S CLUB?
As with all of you, when not serving the SMCGP or spending valuable time with my family, I do give of my time elsewhere. For me it is the Yankee Air Museum at the famous Willow Run Airport. That of course is the home of the Bomber Plant where patriots including Rosie the riveter built 6,885 B-24 Liberators during WWII. It made Detroit and its war effort a key link in the "Arsenal of Democracy”.
All that you probably already knew, but did you know that we are working hard to move our museum into 144,000 square feet of that original plant?
You are invited of course to help in any way if you so chose. But it’s not just money, although we need lots of that. Have you ever considered at ride in a B-17 or B-25 bomber? How about taking the whole aircraft for your family or friends or favorite charity? I can arrange it?
We have some other events you might like to consider:
Bomber Buffing & Detroit Aviation and Airlines Collectibles Show on April 9, 2016
June 22, 2016 – Wild Wednesday at Willow Run. The RCAF Snowbirds & CF-18 Hornet.
There’s more: A Victory Car Show. Thunder Over Michigan this year featuring the amazing Breitling Jet Team, Girls at the Controls, and more. The Men’s Club Events team is planning a visit for this spring or summer at the YAM. Hope you’ll join us.
There is always an opportunity to volunteer for events or just come out to the Yankee Air Museum for a visit. We are proud of our museum and thank you for all your support.

Bowling News and Golf News
The Bowling Season has five weeks left to go and we will hold the Banquet in mid May at the Channel Marker Restaurant, next to the Har-bor Lanes on Jefferson. The contract for the next season has been signed and the cost will remain the same as this year. We would like to keep 4 man teams, but we have to find some new Bowlers to make that possible. We can use some of the substi-tute bowlers to help us finish up the current season. If you are interested, call Bob Vogler at 313-882-9636, and you don't even have to give him a joke to join.
On Tuesday, June 21, the GP SMC Golf League will compete against the Birmingham SMC League in a scramble match. We need 22 golfers for our 11 teams, and the cost per man is $40. That amount pays for 9 holes of golf with a cart and a luncheon after the round. Call Bob again at the same num-ber, 313-882-9636 if you wish to compete. The GPSMC is the defending champ, and I am aware that Birmingham is looking for blood. Don't let them have any.
Go Team!!
SMC Open Position Available
The Continuing Saga of the Newsletter Editor's missing Burberry Raincoat. You may remember the pleas in prior Newsletters in January and February about my missing raincoat, mysteriously taken at the December 23rd Meeting. Well...mirabile dictu...it has appeared, of all places, in the Lost and Found at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church some time in late February or very early March. While neither gloves nor car fob were in the pockets, there was a set of keys on an unusual key chain, below, along with several house keys, one of which was a key chain from McGlone Cadillac...no longer in existence. So...do you recognize the key chain? The late 90's Cadillac keys are available for retrieval from your Editor, as well as the other keys. And even stranger, the lost Burberry left at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial in December has been retrieved, I believe.
The SMC Board would like to have a new SMC Historian to take the place of the deceased Donald Blain. If you have any interest in learning about the position, please contact Bob Hynes or John Snyder

ZEALOT: The Life and Time of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan
Our members were divided on the merits of this book, but all agreed that the concept of Jesus as an anti-Roman zealot provoked a spirited discussion.
One group of critics felt that it was offensive to the Christian culture in which they – and also the others of our group – were raised and to which they and their families – most of them - still adhere: it was difficult for him to accept the author’s challenge to such fundamental beliefs as the virgin birth, the nativity in Bethlehem, and the Resurrection. Resur-rection is the crux of Christianity, one member stated, and without it the entire edifice of Christian theology – developed over many centuries – will fail.
Another group felt the author was neither a trained theologian nor a competent historian, as claimed in several published reviews of the book, but is instead a creative writer. In an effort to reconcile his admiration for Jesus who became the Christ, with his concept that Jesus was a zealous opponent of Ro-man culture and rule, he seems in several places to interpret events – even speculations – which contra-dict one another. His view of the conflict between James the Just and Paul of Tarsus has been criticized as simplistic and un-historical.
A few of our group – sturdy souls – said with some trepidation that they liked the book in placing Jesus in a Palestine which was full of prophets and zealots who provoked the Roman rulers – and the priestly hierarchy which was complicit with them – into acts of brutality such as crucifixion (or other
forms of savagery) whenever their legitimacy was challenged. The text of the book is supported by considerable biblical scholarship, often set forth in extensive source notes at the end of the book. The author’s questioning of traditional Christian teach-ings about Jesus results from the meager historical record presented in the New Testament, which the author tries to weave into a narrative which makes sense in the context of the culture of first century Palestine. The Roman authorities had little toler-ance for any Palestinian whose views might be se-ditious, and Jesus’ attacks on abuses in the Temple as Jerusalem could only have one result, his execu-tion on the cross.
Some aspects of the culture of that age (in which echoes are found in our own time) were discussed: the population explosion and increased urbanization which resulted from (relative) peace within the Empire, similar to contemporary reli-gious zealousness in countries – Middle Eastern and African – which cannot provide peaceful opportunities for youths; the zealousness of true be-lievers such as the murderous Sicarii (Daggermen), similar in many ways to today’s suicide bombers.
The book selection for April is Career of Evil by Robert Galbreath, aka J. K. Rowling, suggested by Chris Walsh. We will discuss it at Bill Mosely’s home, 17 Sycamore Lane, Grosse Pointe City, on April 19 (Tuesday) starting at 5:00.
