We are currently tracking at 92% with Māori and Pasifika rates also at this level. During Term 2 each year the Ministry of Education analyses student attendance across all schools in Aotearoa. This reports shows that our overall student attendance is notably higher than schools in Otago Southland, co-ed schools and Decile 8 schools. This high rate of attendance is the result of parental expectations, the work of our form teachers, Deans, the attendance programme ROCK ON all supported by our attendance officer Megan Christensen. It is one of the key factors in our students’ strong academic achievement in NCEA. Year 7 and 8 students had a beautiful day on the slopes of Cardrona Skifield for their ski day on Wednesday. Year 9 and 10 students head up the mountain on Tuesday next week. The acclaimed Kahurangi Dance Company performed waiata and dance from the Pacific for our junior students last Monday. Ngā mihi and thank you to our kapa haka group who performed a waiata tautoko to thank them for their mahi. A number of students in our junior school are very fortunate to be receiving mentoring from members of our Central Otago Community. The aim is to strengthen connections with positive role models and build identity and self - confidence. Alva Bennet from Te Uruuruwhenua Health is teaching whakairo or carving to one group and Whetu Taewa is building a demolition car with another. A further group will be learning mau rākau (taiaha) with Tim Riwhi from Alexandra over three sessions in the coming weeks. We are very grateful to Mitre 10 Cromwell for donating the rākau for this activity. Two teams will be involved in the Winter Sports Tournament next week. Our Senior A Netball team flies to Nelson for their competition and the Girls Hockey team play here in Cromwell for the Jenny McDonald Cup. I know both teams have been committed to their training in recent weeks and we wish them, coaches and supporters all the best for an enjoyable and successful week ahead. COMMUNITY NOTICES ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ is a provocative movie that challenges the ‘standard’ delivery of education in schools and considers different pathways in the transition from school to study, work or further training. It will be shown on Wednesday 18 September 5.00-7.00pm in D1 and parents are warmly invited to attend. The documentary presents a number of approaches to learning that are informing the future thinking for our school redevelopment. Our kapa haka group is currently preparing for Polyfest in Dunedin on Wednesday 11 September with extended Friday practices with our tutor Teri Kahukuranui. They will appear with other performers at our biannual showcase of art, drama, dance and music, ‘The Soiree’, to be staged on Thursday evening 12 September. Mason Stretch Principal YEAR 7 MUSIC CONCERT The third module of Year 7 students concluded on Friday 16 August with a concert celebrating what students had learnt. Bianca Horne presented a power-point on theory and pieces learnt, while Ben Griffiths was Master of Ceremonies. Year 13 student Logan Bell was the Guest Performer. Duos were performed by Austin Hansen and Ben Griffiths and class items included '12 Bar Blues' and 'Praise You' by Fatboy Slim. Parents and students enjoyed a shared morning tea afterwards. Cath Forsyth - Year 7 Music teacher STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE - BOARD OF TRUSTEES Congratulations to Bella Dickison and Johnny O’Neill on their nominations for student representative on the Board of Trustees. These nominees will speak at assembly on 10 September with students voting in form classes. The voting ends at noon on Friday 20 September . CONGRATULATIONS Lachlann MacTaggart - placed 4th in 50 ,100 and 200 freestyle at the South Island Swim Championships. CENTRAL OTAGO BUDGET ADVICE / STUDYLINK EVENING Pam Hughes at Central Otago Budget Advice has stepped into the gap left by Studylink and has offered to run an evening to assist our leavers sign onto Studylink. This evening is 18 September from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Cromwell College in the library. You will have to bring your own device if possible. A letter with full details has been given to students in Years 12 and 13. Please direct any questions to our Careers Advisor, Kate Borrie. "Most likely to succeed" inspires its audiences with a sense of purpose and possibility, and is bringing communities together in re-evaluating what our students and teachers are capable of doing. The students showcased in “Most Likely to Succeed” represent what’s possible when you give young people more responsibility than you think they can handle and ask them to bring all of their knowledge to bear on a single task.” This feature-length documentary “Most Likely to Succeed” examines the history of education, revealing the growing opportunities for our college model in today’s innovative world. Daffodil Day fundraiser. We invite you to support your local ANZ Branch with its fundraising efforts for Daffodil Day on 30 August 2019. This year we are going to ‘Cycle to Dunedin and back’ on an exercycle in the branch, a total of 446 kms. This is to support all the people that have to travel to Dunedin for their cancer treatment. We are asking people to buy a kilometer for $5 and we have random mystery prizes spread throughout the 446kms. We would be immensely grateful for any donaons made. You can drop in to the branch with your donaon and see us cycle 26 th -30 th August or donate online, account name - Daffodil Day 06-0921-0139429-00 Reference - name and phone number. Together we really can make a difference! MATIFIC MATHS CHALLENGE In Week 4 the Year 7&8 classes took part in a three day Matific Maths Challenge against other schools from Australia and New Zealand. Congratulations to 7B who gained 7th place, in Year 7, in New Zealand and 7L who gained 8th place, in Year 7, in New Zealand. The students used some class time working towards the challenge and students also put in a lot of extra time at home to gain points. Ka pai! SOCIAL SCIENCES CURRICULUM CORNER Per Sjonell Visit Per is the ambassador for the European Union in New Zealand. Originally from Sweden, Per was a wealth of information about how the EU formed after the Second World War and its role in World Politics today. Per highlighted that what is good for the EU is good for New Zealand, and that decisions made globally can impact what happens here in New Zealand. Seniors were given the opportunity to hear Per talk on Thusday the 15th August, as part of a Central Otago Schools tour. UN Youth Workshops On Friday 16 August Social Studies classes in Years 7-10 were given the opportunity to hear various presentations by UN Youth members. We were fortunate that five representatives of UN Youth travelled up from Dunedin to take various topics including; NZ law making (most Year 9 students are currently studying 'Systems of Government') and 'Social Media and Media Literacy' a very topical workshop for all our students. Students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with, and be encouraged by these young people, most of whom are currently studying law and/or politics at Otago University. Photo shows UN Youth members who took workshops. ODT Social Studies Quiz The ODT yearly Social Studies Quiz was held in Frankton at the Remarkables School this year. Cromwell College entered eight groups over Years 7-10. Unfortunately after several weeks of tutoring we were informed that Cromwell College was the only school entered for Years 9 and 10 and had won by default. Years 7 and 8 travelled over to Frankton and although they were not placed students had an amazing time. My thanks to Year 7 teacher Jason Barron and parent Anna Louise Sinnott for taking the students over and supporting them. Cath Forsyth TiC Social Studies Left to right; Rebecca Turner, Josh Meikle, James Sutherland, Laurie Duncan, Liesje de Bruin THE ARTS Kahaurangi Maori Dance Performance On Monday 19 August the Kahaurangi Dance company performed to Year 7, 8 and some Year 9 students. Dances showed various performance techniques and costumes worn by islanders around the Pacific. A highlight was when three students were picked to have an opportunity to do a 'fighting' dance with traditional Taiaha. The boys enthusiastically joined in the fun and impressed with their newly discovered skills. Ripponburn Concert On Thursday 22 August, music teachers Trish Copland and Cath Forsyth took a group of students to perform to the elderly at Ripponburn home. Residents were amazed at the high level of talent and performance from 'Con Brio' (Cromwell College junior singers) Grace Tiko (dance and a song) Bridie Nicol (flute solo) Julia Anderson (piano and part of a duo on saxophone) and Cameron Miller (trumpet). Performance opportunities are important to students to overcome nerves and to help improve performance. Our next concert will be in week 10 at Care and Friendship. Our best section was the flags but enjoyed trying to guess who the famous person was." Baxter and Axel CENTRAL OTAGO PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT Sport in our region is currently restructuring the delivery of several key sports, in order to allow maximum student participation. Factors such as weather, an overloaded calendar, and the age/year group of participants are being considered to ensure more students have the opportunity to compete in a school event, a zone competition, followed by a Central Otago Championship. There will also be a shift in the location of some of our pinnacle events for a more even spread across our region. This means that in 2020 we will see some of our event dates moved, and some new locations added - which will add an even more exciting element to the competition! We’re excited to see these changes take place, and look forward to updating you and our school calendar as plans are set! 6-a-side Lunchtime Cricket As the days become longer and warmer, we’re reminded that cricket season is just around the corner! To celebrate, on Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes for the last three weeks of Term, there will be a 6- a-side competition for the first six teams to sign up! Rules are modified to suit a range of players, and anyone can get involved. Per Sjonell Visit

THE ARTS
