93% student attendance is the target in our schools Annual Plan this year. We are currently tracking at 92% with Māori and Pasifika rates also at this level. During Term 2 each year the Ministry of Education analyses student attendance across all schools in Aotearoa. This reports shows that our overall student attendance is notably higher than schools in Otago Southland, co-ed schools and Decile 8 schools. This high rate of attendance is the result of parental expectations, the work of our form teachers, Deans, the attendance programme ROCK ON all supported by our attendance officer Megan Christensen. It is one of the key factors in our students’ strong academic achievement in NCEA.
Year 7 and 8 students had a beautiful day on the slopes of Cardrona Skifield for their ski day on Wednesday. Year 9 and 10 students head up the mountain on Tuesday next week. The acclaimed Kahurangi Dance Company performed waiata and dance from the Pacific for our junior students last Monday. Ngā mihi and thank you to our kapa haka group who performed a waiata tautoko to thank them for their mahi.
A number of students in our junior school are very fortunate to be receiving mentoring from members of our Central Otago Community. The aim is to strengthen connections with positive role models and build identity and self-confidence. Alva Bennet from Te Uruuruwhenua Health is teaching whakairo or carving to one group and Whetu Taewa is building a demolition car with another. A further group will be learning mau rākau (taiaha) with Tim Riwhi from Alexandra over three sessions in the coming weeks. We are very grateful to Mitre 10 Cromwell for donating the rākau for this activity.
Two teams will be involved in the Winter Sports Tournament next week. Our Senior A Netball team flies to Nelson for their competition and the Girls Hockey team play here in Cromwell for the Jenny McDonald Cup. I know both teams have been committed to their training in recent weeks and we wish them, coaches and supporters all the best for an enjoyable and successful week ahead.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
‘Most Likely to Succeed’ is a provocative movie that challenges the ‘standard’ delivery of education in schools and considers different pathways in the transition from school to study, work or further training. It will be shown on Wednesday 18 September 5.00-7.00pm in D1 and parents are warmly invited to attend. The documentary presents a number of approaches to learning that are informing the future thinking for our school redevelopment.
Our kapa haka group is currently preparing for Polyfest in Dunedin on Wednesday 11 September with extended Friday practices with our tutor Teri Kahukuranui. They will appear with other performers at our biannual showcase of art, drama, dance and music, ‘The Soiree’, to be staged on Thursday evening 12 September.

Wednesday 18 September, 5:00 – 7:00pm, Location - College room D1 Join college parents for the screening of “Most likely to Succeed” and discuss how best to deliver coherent pathways into industry and tertiary education. "Most likely to succeed" inspires its audiences with a sense of purpose and possibility, and is bringing communities together in re-evaluating what our students and teachers are capable of doing.
The students showcased in “Most Likely to Succeed” represent what’s possible when you give young people more
responsibility than you think they can handle and ask them to bring all of their knowledge to bear on a single task.”
This feature-length documentary “Most Likely to Succeed” examines the history of education, revealing the
growing opportunities for our college model in today’s innovative world.

MATIFIC MATHS CHALLENGE
In Week 4 the Year 7&8 classes took part in a three day Matific Maths Challenge against
other schools from Australia and New Zealand.
Congratulations to 7B who gained 7th place, in Year 7, in New Zealand and 7L who gained
8th place, in Year 7, in New Zealand. The students used some class time working towards
the challenge and students also put in a lot of extra time at home to gain points.

SOCIAL SCIENCES CURRICULUM CORNER
Per Sjonell Visit
Per is the ambassador for the European Union in New Zealand.
Originally from Sweden, Per was a wealth of information
about how the EU formed after the Second World War
and its role in World Politics today. Per highlighted that
what is good for the EU is good for New Zealand, and
that decisions made globally can impact what happens
here in New Zealand.
Seniors were given the opportunity to hear Per talk on
Thusday the 15th August, as part of a Central Otago
Schools tour.
UN Youth Workshops
On Friday 16 August Social Studies classes in Years 7-10 were given the opportunity to
hear various presentations by UN Youth members.
We were fortunate that five representatives of UN Youth
travelled up from Dunedin to take various topics including;
NZ law making (most Year 9 students are currently studying
'Systems of Government') and 'Social Media and Media
Literacy' a very topical workshop for all our students.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with, and be
encouraged by these young people, most of whom are
currently studying law and/or politics at Otago University.
Photo shows UN Youth members who took workshops.
ODT Social Studies Quiz
The ODT yearly Social Studies Quiz was held in Frankton
at the Remarkables School this year. Cromwell College
entered eight groups over Years 7-10.
Unfortunately after several weeks of tutoring we were
informed that Cromwell College was the only school
entered for Years 9 and 10 and had won by default.
Years 7 and 8 travelled over to Frankton and although
they were not placed students had an amazing time.
My thanks to Year 7 teacher Jason Barron
and parent Anna Louise Sinnott for taking
the students over and supporting them.

THE ARTS
Kahaurangi Maori Dance Performance
On Monday 19 August the Kahaurangi Dance company
performed to Year 7, 8 and some Year 9 students.
Dances showed various performance techniques and
costumes worn by islanders around the Pacific.
A highlight was when three students were picked to have an
opportunity to do a 'fighting' dance with traditional Taiaha.
The boys enthusiastically joined in the fun and impressed
with their newly discovered skills.
Photo show the group performing and students Jakob
Brenssell, Kieran Hancock and Kees Johnson working on
their Taiaha skills.
$5.50 has been charged to students accounts for this performance.
Ripponburn Concert
On Thursday 22 August, music teachers Trish Copland and Cath
Forsyth took a group of students to perform to the elderly at
Ripponburn home. Residents were amazed at the high level of
talent and performance from 'Con Brio' (Cromwell College junior
singers) Grace Tiko (dance and a song) Bridie Nicol (flute solo)
Julia Anderson (piano and part of a duo on saxophone) and
Cameron Miller (trumpet).
Performance opportunities are important to students to overcome nerves and to help
improve performance. Our next concert will be in week 10 at Care and Friendship.

CENTRAL OTAGO PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT
Sport in our region is currently restructuring the delivery of several key sports, in order to
allow maximum student participation. Factors such as weather, an overloaded calendar, and
the age/year group of participants are being considered to ensure more students have the
opportunity to compete in a school event, a zone competition, followed by a Central Otago
Championship. There will also be a shift in the location of some of our pinnacle events for a
more even spread across our region. This means that in 2020 we will see some of our event
dates moved, and some new locations added - which will add an even more exciting
element to the competition! We’re excited to see these changes take place, and look forward
to updating you and our school calendar as plans are set!
6-a-side Lunchtime Cricket
As the days become longer and
warmer, we’re reminded that cricket
season is just around the corner! To
celebrate, on Tuesday and
Wednesday lunchtimes for the last
three weeks of Term, there will be a 6-
a-side competition for the first six
teams to sign up! Rules are modified to
suit a range of players, and anyone
can get involved.
