This year as well as in the coming years, may all of you, your family members as well as all the Nepalese citizens in the country and in the Diaspora be blessed with GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS. I further wish that the New Year 2019 will better than 2018 in every way on both the personal and professional fronts. The beginning of the New Year is always a good time to reflect on the achievements of the past year and set the targets – both personal and professional – for the coming year. Accordingly, the new year is the time for us in AITM to evaluate last year’s institutional performance and set institutional targets for this year. Our institutional goals have always been to offer new academic programs of reputed national and international universities. To this end, we have and will continue striving to achieve our objectives. Over the past few years, we have had to cope and overcome many regulatory challenges and bureaucratic hurdles, some of which were unforeseen. The past year has been a year of hope and disappointment as our efforts to get new national and international programs have not materialized due to many constraining rules and regulations and, in the latter part of the year, on the moratorium on affiliation, and because of the transitional nature of our national politics, with frequent changes in the political leadership. Now that the country has a majority government, we are hopeful of stable long-term education policies, though the indications so far are not that hopeful. Looking back in 2018, I recall the words of Charles Dickens in “A Tale of Two Cities”, when he stated as follows: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us….” During the last year, we, Nepalese, have taken a deep leap of faith by choosing a majority government, but we have yet to taste the fruits of our choice. Two months after the elections, a majority government was sworn in on 15 February 2018. On 14 February 2019, this government will have been in power for one year. The people, who expected so much from this government, has been very disappointed with the government’s performance in dealing with the very bad state of our dusty, muddy roads, full of pot-holes, the transportation syndicate, the gold smuggling, the Nirmala rape case, the seemingly increasing cases of rape and violence, the rising prices, the misuse of state coffers for political patronage and for unjustified and unreasonable perks and privileges, including the procurement of expensive vehicles and helicopter for the President, the transfer of existing institutions for expansion of President’s premises and relocation of Vice-President’s office and the more recently held Mother Moon’s religious extravaganza in the name of Asia Pacific Summit. I am sending this message from Cambodia. When I was in Nepal during the months of October and November 2018, I met many high officials and participated in many discussions so as to contribute to the formulation of forward looking education policies, which will help develop qualified human resources within the country, as well as minimize the outflow of almost 100,000 students who are going abroad for studies. Many of these students will settle abroad. In a globalized context, Nepal’s education policies must ensure that quality education is offered at all levels and that our graduates are second to none. However, it seems that the draft report of the Education Commission is a backward looking document, rather than a forward looking document. While the developed countries and many ambitious developing countries are going aggressively in one direction, our education policy makers, with anti-private bias, want to take Nepal in the reverse direction. Let us hope that reason and global trends prevail so that backward looking, conservative policies which shackle the growth of knowledge are thrown away and replaced by forward-looking education policies, which encourage quality and innovation, which are necessary for a knowledge economy, which is essential to make Nepal a peaceful and prosperous Nepal. I wish to conclude this message on a very positive note about AITM, which successfully conducted with its two other partners and the very reputed Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business (Rice Business) the Executive Leadership Development Program 2018 (ELDP 2018) for 40 participants, including owners, Directors, CEOs, Deputy CEOs from the banking, insurance, hotel, telecom and other business enterprises from 28 October to 2 November 2018. The workshop was conducted by world renowned Professors Brent Smith, PhD and Balaji Koka, PhD. All the participants benefitted tremendously from this very intensive training program. Once again, the very best to all of you and your loved ones in the coming year 2019. Message from The Executive Chairman Prof. Dr. Sriram Bhagut Mathe -1-

Dear Students, Alumni, Parents, Guardians, Faculty, Staff and Promoter Friends and other Friends and Well-wishers of Asian Institute of Technology and Management,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and on my own personal behalf, I would like to wish all of you a very HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2019.

The past year has been a year of hope and disappointment as our efforts to get new national and international programs have not materialized due to many constraining rules and regulations and, in the latter part of the year, on the moratorium on affiliation, and because of the transitional nature of our national politics, with frequent changes in the political

leadership. Now that the country has a majority government, we are hopeful of stable long-term education policies, though the indications so far are not that hopeful.

Looking back in 2018, I recall the words of Charles Dickens in “A Tale of Two Cities”, when he stated as follows: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us….”

During the last year, we, Nepalese, have taken a deep leap of faith by choosing a majority government, but we have yet to taste the fruits of our choice.

When I was in Nepal during the months of October and November 2018, I met many high officials and participated in many discussions

so as to contribute to the formulation of forward looking education policies, which will help develop qualified human resources within the country, as well as minimize the outflow of almost 100,000 students who are going abroad for studies. Many of these students will settle abroad. In a globalized context, Nepal’s education policies must ensure that quality education is offered at all levels and that our graduates are second to none.

FIELD VISIT OF ICIMOD’S EARTHQUAKE RECONSTRUCTION SITE AT DHUNGENTAR, NUWAKOT

In response to the April 25, 2015 earthquake, the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development

(ICIMOD) developed an innovative strategy for rebuilding the damaged infrastructures and services for the

most vulnerable communities in the earthquake-affected areas in Nepal, and the strategy is implemented for

the first time as a pilot project at Dhungentar, Nuwakot, Nepal. The primary objective of the project is to

reconstruct low-cost houses for financially weak and marginalized communities at Dhungentar (e.g., Sunar,

Magar) using Compressed Stabilized Soil Blocks (CSSB) in order to reduce carbon footprint in the

environment. Active involvement of the local beneficiaries has been ensured in the project. Fifty-seven

individual low-cost houses of different sizes, one health post and one community building have been

constructed at Dhungentar using the CSSB technology in this pilot project.

One of the objectives of this pilot project is to estimate carbon footprint of the low-cost housing using CSSB

technology. A collaboration contract was signed on October 01, 2018 between Asian Institute of Technology

and Management (AITM) and ICIMOD to carry out a study to estimate carbon footprint of the Dungentar low-

cost reconstruction pilot project and compare it with the similar project using conventional kiln-burnt bricks

in place of CSSB. The study was completed in one and half month’s period and a report was submitted to

ICIMOD.

Recently, Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM) and International Center for Integrated

Mountain Development (ICIMOD) signed a collaboration agreement on carbon footprint estimation of

ICIMOD’s low-cost housing pilot project, in which Compressed Stabilized Soil Blocks (CSSB) are used in

place of traditional kiln-burnt bricks, at its earthquake reconstruction site, Dhungentar, Nuwakot. As per the

agreement, a three-member AITM team visited the project site on October 6 and 7, 2018 for site inspection

and required data collection for carbon footprint estimation of the project. The team was led by Dr. Rabindra

Raj Giri, and other two members of the team were Mr. Pravakar Pradhan (climate change expert) and Mr.

Prakash Dulal (Civil Engineer).

On the first day, the team travelled from Kathmandu to Dhungentar project site, carried out inspection of the

project area and collected necessary data/information from ICIMOD’s project staff at the site for carbon

footprint estimation of the project. The data collection continued on the second day also. A focused group

discussion was also conducted on the second day morning with the local people within the project area to

identify the possibility of establishing a local community-owned sustainable enterprise for production and

business of CSSB. The team completed its targeted activities in the field in the afternoon and then returned to

Kathmandu later on the day.

DHUNGENTAR CARBON FOOTPRINT REPORT SUBMITTED TO ICIMOD

Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM) and International Center for Integrated Mountain Development

(ICIMOD) signed a collaboration agreement on October 01, 2018 to carry out a study for estimating carbon footprint of

interlocking Cement Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB) houses constructed by ICIMOD for local marginalized residents of

Dhungentar, Nuwakot district, Nepal, which was adversely impacted by the 2015 earthquakes. A three-member (Dr. Rabindra

Raj Giri, Mr. Pravakar Pradhan and Er. Prakash Dulal) AITM team visited the Dhungentar on October 6 and 7, 2018 to observe

the reconstruction site and collect necessary data/information for carbon footprint estimation of the interlocking CSEB houses

constructed there. The final report of the study was submitted to Strategic Cooperation Unit (SCU) of ICIMOD on the 10th of

December 2018.

“DIPAWALI” AND “CHHATH” FESTIVAL GREETING EXCHANGE OF AITM EMPLOYEES

In the backdrops of 2015 devastating earthquakes in

Nepal and climate change as a major global issue, the

International Center for Integrated Mountain

Development (ICIMOD) in association with National

Reconstruction Authority (NRA) of Nepal and

supported by International Development Research

Center (IDRC) initiated and executed a reconstruction

project entitled “Resilient Mountain Village: A Pilot

Demonstration Project on Earthquake Reconstruction

and Rehabilitation in Dhungentar, Nuwakot” from April

2016 to September 2018. Total 54 residential houses

and one health post including toilets plus one

multipurpose community building are constructed for

marginal ized residents of Dhungentar using

interlocking cement stabilized earth bricks (CSEB)

instead of the conventional burnt bricks. Moreover,

Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM)

in collaboration with ICIMOD conducted a study to

estimate carbon footprint of the interlocking CSEB

house construction at Dhungentar for the project

period.

The ICIMOD handed over the project to the local

community in a ceremony organized at Dhungentar on

December 17, 2018. The NRA Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Sushil Gyawanli, ICIMOD Director General Dr. David

Molden, other people from ICIMOD and representatives

from technical, knowledge and private partners of

ICIMOD were present in the ceremony. Mr. Pravakar

Pradhan and Er. Prakash Dulal from AITM participated

in the handover program at Dhungentar. In the program,

Mr. Pravakar Pradhan explained on importance of

carbon footprint reduction in construction industry and

the role played by the interlocking CSEB construction

technology to minimize carbon footprint of the

Dhungentar reconstruction project.
