Principal’s Message... As we conclude the second term, now is a good time to remember the high expectations we have of all students at Gilgandra High School. To reinforce these expectations we have introduced a refinement to our merit system. Now known as the ‘Merit Star’, students receive a merit for their efforts, attached to their work, however the teacher now records that they have issued a Merit Star electronically. So, no more merit certificates at the bottom of the school bag! It will also mean that our records are more accurate and as a result we should see a strong increase in the number of students being recognised for their efforts. Early signs are that the initiative is already very successful, and with the benefit of students not having to hand anything into the office, ongoing recognition will be much more immediate. The end of term has also seen a flurry of extra-curricular activity to support learning in the classroom. A select number of students from Years 9 and 10 are currently on campus at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), experiencing Aerospace Engineering, as well as a smorgasbord of other activities. This week students in Year 8 attended a Japanese exhibition in Dubbo to expand their historical knowledge and understanding of Japan, its people and traditions. On both occasions, our students continue to demonstrate that their application, behaviour and interest is a cut above the competition. Heading into the holidays I would like to encourage our senior students to continue with their study programs. Research shows that short ‘grabs’ are a more effective method than the long, hard slog of sitting down for hours at a time. Our Year 12 students should be well and truly in the throes of readying themselves for their Trial HSC, and then ultimately the HSC. If the study routine hasn’t kicked in yet, there is still time, but I’m reminded of the old adage which says the best time to plant a tree was yesterday - those who are already in the study habit will find the next few weeks less of a hurdle. Best wishes for a well-earned break and I am looking forward to the success stories which Term 3 will offer. Neal Reed Principal

On Tuesday 27th June students completed an electronic survey about three things - day
structure, student rewards and play/activity at school during breaks. It was an important task
and an opportunity for students to have their voice heard about their school and what they would like to see here. I look forward to sharing the results
with you next term!

Principal’s Award winners for the last two weeks
Deputy’s desk...
I would firstly like to thank the Gilgandra community for making my first semester so enjoyable at Gilgandra High School. I have been very well supported by staff, students, parents and citizens and this has made my job so much easier. As this is the last newsletter for the term I would like to wish all students and their families a safe, restful and healthy holidays. Approaching Term 3 in the right mindset is especially important for Year 12. In a Maths context, Year 12 have completed 230 of 240 school weeks, so the next 10 weeks are crucial to enhancing your post school opportunities. For Year 11 students, this is your last term as preliminary students. It is vital that your school attendance, and that any N-award notifications are resolved before the end of Term 3. Also, Year 10 will be choosing their subjects early in Term 3. Students need to think very carefully about the choices they make for the preliminary year, and ask staff members for support. You must choose subjects for the right reasons, as this will affect the pathways you will pursue as an individual. Finally, there has been interest in a possible SCUBA dive excursion towards the end of the year. It is expensive, and there are several strict conditions that need to be met, but it could be the adventure of a lifetime. The first student to correctly identify this creature will receive a prize.
On Monday 19th June four Year 11 Hospitality students, accompanied by Mrs Schier ,attended the CWA hall for a cooking class and talk from Kate Bracks. Kate Bracks won Masterchef in 2011 and has partnered with the Cancer Council and Net Waste to promote a program helping individuals in learning how easy it is to prepare delicious healthy meals, whilst reducing food wastage and saving time and money. During the talk they mentioned that NSW throws away 2.5 billion dollars worth of edible food per year. We began the class by watching Kate prepare a tomato and pasta dish which included many vegetables and Australian made products. Kate also made a vegetarian pizza using the previous tomato paste. Once she had demonstrated how easy it is to make the pizza dough, we all had a try at making it ourselves to take home. The last dish of the day was an open lamb kofta garnished with fresh salsa and Greek yoghurt. The talk was very inspiring and a great way to learn how to increase nutrition and decrease waste in the kitchen. We would like to thank the Cancer Council for funding the event and giving us a a goodie bag full of fresh ingredients and recipes. Also thanks to Mrs Schier for giving us the opportunity to attend the event. Year 11 students.
Food Workshops...
Safe Respectful Achievers – we have had so many this term (and so many tokens). 3rd place - with a total of 1913 tokens - Year 8 2nd place - with a total of 2454 tokens - Year 12 The winners with a fantastic total of 2698 tokens - Year 7!! Today we rewarded Year 7 with a movie block and party food. Congratulations! ATTENDANCE news… At our PBL assembly on Monday morning, we also announced the Year with the best attendance for this term. Congratulations to Year 12 who were the winners with a rate of 90.2%. On Tuesday they enjoyed a scrumptious lunch in the study. Well done Year 12! 2nd place – 88.3% - Year 9 3rd place - 87.7% - Year 7 Remember attendance is important. Attend school every day.

Year 8 excursion to Dubbo ...
On Monday Year 8 History had the opportunity to visit Dubbo to compliment their study on Japan Under the Shoguns. It was an amazing day with a visit to Pollet's Martial Arts Dojo, where Matt demonstrated what it was like to be a Samurai Warrior. Year 8 then got to try out their karate skills. The second part of the day was spent at Shoyoen Japanese Garden, focusing on the cultural aspects of the period. Shoyoen is an authentic garden crafted by Japanese gardeners. Students took part in sushi tasting, a tea 'ceremony' in front of the tea house and could dress up in a kimono if they wished. Many aspects of Japanese culture were explained by Karen, who conducted the session.

Dear Parents and Carers
Gilgandra High School will transition to the new NSW Public Schools’ finance system and a new bank
account on 4 September 2017.
To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept payments from parents and
carers.
1. Direct deposits: As of 25 August 2017, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our current
school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new one. Any
payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a student’s
account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct deposits before
25 August 2017.
2. EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 29 August
and 4 September 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS
payments before 29 August, 2017. From 4 September 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted
as before. (CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE)
3. Cash and cheque payments: Between 29 August 2017 and 4 September 2017, we will also
not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank
account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or
cheque payments before 29 August 2017. From 4 September 2017, cash and cheque payments
will be accepted as before.
4. Online payments (POP): As of 25 August 2017, payments to our current online payment
facility will cease. You will not be able to use the Department of Education’s Parent Online
Payment (POP) system until Wednesday 6 September.
