From the President’s Pen

Dear Zontians, I am one proud President! Our club just hosted the best District 10 Conference in years! And, that is not just my biased opinion. We have received so many thank you notes and emails from members all over the district thanking our club for doing such a good job. All of the evaluations were positive, so members of the Zonta Club of Fort Smith, I would like to say

JOB WELL DONE!! I never in my wildest dreams could have guessed how much work it would be to put on a successful conference. But, our club worked as a team and succeeded! Now, since conference is over, we can get back to the business of our club. This Monday night our speaker will be Jackie Hamilton of the Hamilton House. I also know of at least two guests that will be visiting our club, so please make plans now to attend Monday night’s meeting. Sheryl Flanagin is going to discuss her plans for the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign that starts Nov. 25th and ends on Dec. 10th. After Monday night’s meeting, the holiday season starts. Mom, Katie, and I are spending the Thanksgiving holiday on the sandy beaches of Destin, Florida! A much needed vacation!! Then, we are all in for a treat, our annual Christmas Potluck Dinner at the beautiful home of Kathy Coleman. It promises to be an evening to get you in the Christmas spirit! Hope to see you all Monday night!

Sincerely,

Kim

launched~ check it out today!

Torino’s history is told through its architecture – from the Roman buildings of the first Torino, Augusta Taurinorum, to the traces of a medieval city by the Palazzo di Città (the Town Hall), and on to the elegant baroque architecture of the Palazzo Carignano and the masterpieces of architects Filippo Juvara and Guarino Guarini. The city is also well known for its art nouveau and art deco architecture and boasts contemporary works of some of the most famous architects today. Discover more of Torino’s history in the numerous abbeys, fortresses, castles and monuments in and around the city, including the Venaria Reale Palace, the Villa della Regina, the Basilica of Superga, the lighthouse of Maddalena, the Castle of Moncalieri, the Castle of Rivoli, the Abbey of Saint Michael and San Giovanni Battista’s Cathedral which houses the Holy Shroud, the sheet that is believed to have wrapped the body of Jesus Christ after his death.

SWTR columnist Ben Boulden shared many interesting stories of “famous and infamous” women of Fort Smith history at the September Zonta meeting. He started the journey is 1854 with the first recorded female birth in Fort Smith, Sarah Ann Tichenal. He also shared tales of such women as Belle and Pearl Starr, and several movie stars of the early 1900’s. He covered the story of the 1914 lockout of the coal miners and discussed women’s suffrage on November 13, 1917. His research came from researching old newspapers on microfilm.
