Thank you everyone who came to our G5 & G8 Moving Up
and End of Year Awards Ceremonies yesterday. It was nice
to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and be
entertained by them through a variety of performances as
well!
Confirmation of CIS PTA Board for next year
The candidates presented to the community for the CIS PTA
Board of 2018/19 have been overwhelmingly approved by
CIS parents:
President Mrs. Wendy Tanagho
Vice-President Mrs. Kavita Chawla
Secretary Mrs. Jean Saclo
Treasurer Mrs. Liezel Ackerman
Thank you to these parents for being willing to step forward, and we are
excited for a wonderful year of activities and support next year with their
leadership, and all parents contributing and supporting them!

7:30am to 8am starting time survey
We had 88 respondents to our survey,
with the majority preferring NOT to
move our starting time from 7:30am to
8am. With such a large percentage
not in favor, we will therefore not
continue considering this option at this
time. Thanks to all who contributed!
On behalf of the Admin Team, THANK YOU all for the support you have given your children, to our
teachers and support staff, and the CIS Admin, as we continue with our efforts to facilitating their
learning. We wish you a wonderful summer break!

Hello All,
As the year comes to a close we are publishing this final Newsflash today. It is always a
wonderful time of year, but also one of high emotions as many of us move onto other places
- teachers, students and parents alike! As one of “those people” moving on at the end of the
year, Ms. Chang and I would like to thank the entire CIS community for its continual support
of the school, our programs, our teachers and students, and of us personally. These six years
have gone by in the blink of an eye! I am sure that is in no small part because of the wonderful
work, effort, and commitment everyone has shown to do the best we can for students and
student learning. CIS is truly a remarkable hub of learning!
I know as the principal, I am supposed to say this, but truly, we have the nicest, most caring
students I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know and work with. This is, of course the
result of having caring families in our community and how the school community has put
caring for others and compassion on an equal footing with academics. Our students show
year in and year out, that we learn better when we reach out to others, and care about the
world around us. This is something I will take away from our time here.
We truly appreciate the support of our PTA too, which has changed and grown over the years
to respond to and help support our students make an impact on our changing world. Just
this week for instance, we received 600 place settings from our PTA to use at school functions
so we never have to buy single-use plastics. And all these were used during the end of year
parties from preschool to GR 11 ...no need to buy plastic cups forks and plates homeroom
parents! This is the kind of commitment that is the hallmark of who we are at CIS. When we
see something that will help make the world a better place, and we can do something about
it, we do!
Our seniors graduated last week and will be out in the bigger world shortly. Many will go off
to far flung places around the globe or stay close to home. Still, year after year, I have been
amazed at how many alumni return to say hello, see teachers, and stop by the school. Please
come back and visit us Graduates of 2018! We are so proud of all that you have
accomplished, but even more so of what we know you will accomplish in the coming years.
Well done!
So with that, I would like
to once again say
“thank you” to all in the
community and sign off
after six years of Friday
Newsflash articles with
…
Have a wonderful
weekend and summer
with family and friends!
God Bless!

Is Early Years Academic Push More
Harmful Than Beneficial?
In recent years, there has been an
increased pressure on teachers to
provide academic instruction as early as
preschool. Parents worry that if their
children don't know how to read and
write coming out of Kindergarten their
children will be behind their peers.
Research studies have proven over and
over again that this is a myth. As a matter
of fact, actual gains in the achievement
of early academic education tend to
wash out within 1 to 3 years. However,
what is even more concerning is the
evidence of a negative long-term effect
when academics are pushed prior to
developmental readiness. On the other
hand, a play-based early education
clearly showed the positive long-term effects not only in academic achievement but also in
motivation and the social-emotional development.
Early Academic Training Produces Long-Term Harm
At CIS we follow best practices as part of being an IB World School and we pride ourselves in
having developed an exceptional and globally recognized play-based program that
challenges and encourages all our young learners while at the same time keeping them
motivated, positive and believing in their own capabilities. Children develop at their own
rate, and providing them with opportunities has been proven to be key to developing their
unique potential and joy for learning.
It has been an absolute pleasure
working with teachers who
continuously reflect on how to
provide our students with the best
possible education and I will
forever treasure having been part
of the fantastic school culture here
at CIS.
Quoting Walt Disney, "goodbye
seems like forever, farewell is like the
end, but in my heart is the memory
and there [CIS] will always be".
Thank you, CIS for an amazing 4
years!
