I think our students will agree with me that as three out of four of our last school weeks were 3- or 4-day weeks, it seems like we had an extra-long week! It was good to get in a concentrated study time, however, and we now have a clear time to focus until the October break.

Our PS3 & 4 students Certainly did not mind

being back for a 5-day week! I would like to say thank you to parents for beginning the year in a positive and proactive manner… It was great to see a good turnout to our G12 IB DP Values meeting this past Wednesday! And earlier in the week, participants in the PTA International Fair Day meeting were pleasantly surprised at the excellent turnout for our first planning meeting! Thanks to all for the input, further details on the day will be coming out soon. Mark your calendars for a wonderful International day coming up fast at the end of this month, Sept 30th! Have a great weekend, and another productive week next week! Regards, Dr. Gwyn Underwood, Superintendent ==========================================================================

Please be reminded our will be held on September 19th, in the CIS Library. All corporation members are requested to attend.

Hello All,

Recently, I wrote about sleep and how important it is for everyone, especially children, to get enough sleep. During sleep our bodies clear away unused neural connections to make way for new ones. Lack of sleep causes these brain components to stay around, gum together, and actually form plaque, when these build up, can result in slower brain power, and ultimately some very long term problems, like Alzheimer’s. So sleep is important for our bodies to clean out the debris from our brains so we start fresh every day, both in the short term and over the course of our lives.

Another issue that researchers (http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2158244015573169?utm_source=Adestra&utm_medium=email&utm_content=The+Relationship+Between+Cell+Phone+Use+and+Academic+Performance+in+a+Sample+of+U.S.+College+Student&utm_campaign=701284&utm_term=&) have been looking at closely, in this year of the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, is how device usage affects performance in college students. Researchers looked at grade point averages (GPAs) of college students and found, that access to technology, rather than enhancing learning, actually lowered GPAs! There were several variables, or things that affect this outcome and researchers looked at gender, ethnicity, age, and self-regulation skills to determine other factors than just the use of technology.

Overwhelmingly, the research found that students who are unable to self-regulate (control their behavior) did much worse in courses when they had devices. Students who can put down devices and not be distracted by them were fine, and technology served as a tool for learning and not a distractor!

Today we are closing a poll we sent to all 6-12 grade students to ask them about device usage, and the use of social media on and off campus. In the coming weeks, we will share the results with you. Some of the questions related to how much parents or guardians are involved or know about a student’s device and social media usage. It is important that we all contribute to our students’ ethical use of the internet, and that they learn self-regulating skills in regard to device usage. This includes what they post online, how they focus on work when at home, or that they put devices away before bed and are not distracted from a good night’s sleep.

Take some time to talk with your son or daughter about how they use devices, and help them to build self-regulating skills now, while they still have the support at home and at school!

Finally, a big thank you to all of our Grade 12 students, parents and teachers for making Wednesday’s CIS/IB Diploma Values meeting a success last Wednesday. We had nice parent turn out for the event where we all accepted our roles and responsibilities to helping our grade 12s have a successful final year at CIS. Stop by the library and see our new banner with all grade 12 students, parents, and teachers signatures!

A note about our September 20th conferences. Kinder to Grade 5 parents can sign up for goal setting conferences starting on Monday through INSIS. Please see Ms. Lory or Ms. Emma if you need help. MHS Parents will arrive on campus before 3:00 and rotate through your child’s A day and B day schedule to see what is happening in classrooms. A detailed letter for elementary and MHS parents is coming to you on Monday.

Have a fantastic weekend with family and friends. Dr. Ted Mockrish, K-12 Principal

This year the Elementary will change the focus for student recognition during assembly from displaying attributes of the Learner Profile to students who engage in "action" that:

• is purposeful and beneficiary to the community

• demonstrates socially responsible attitudes (e.g. caring for the environments, their fellow students, the community)

• is thoughtful and linked to a concrete experience (e.g. Kinders writing a letter to Greenpeace to save the turtles, a student printing pamphlets and distributing them to a school on another island to inform them of the dangers of tsunamis, etc.).

These recognitions can be given to individuals or groups of students and highlights our vision of challenging our students to be globally engaged and positive contributors in a competitive, changing world.

Ms. Maike Silver, Elementary School Asst. Principal/PYP Coordinator We would like to celebrate Mahati for her passion and spirit to continue her quest to make a difference:

On September 1, I celebrated my birthday with Lihuk Panaghiusa, an NGO. We (Soowan, Jandra and myself) raised funds during our Exhibition as an action to our cause. While sharing snacks with the 88 scholars gathered there, we also gave out the donations (Php 4,606.90) that we raised in fifth grade. If you would like more information on Lihuk Panaghiusa, check out their website at http://lihuk.org/#home

Change Is Here

Did you know that the Philippines has among the highest trash collection rates in Southeast Asia and is listed as one of the world's biggest source of plastic leaking into the ocean. Are you aware of the effects this has not only on life in the ocean but on us as a human race?

"The Plastic Ocean" is a documentary released on YouTube and Netflix and has stirred up strong emotions among many of our community. It has prompted a committee of administrators, teachers and students to drive an initiative that will reduce plastic here on campus, and promote global awareness of the issue at hand.

In order to make a difference, as stated in the CIS mission, our first call for support goes out to the CIS community to make a commitment to reduce single use plastic by bringing food in reusable containers, and ensure every student has a reusable water bottle with them every day.

We already have a commitment from our concessionaires in the canteen to use only reusable utensils and no longer provide drinks in throw away plastic bottles. We know this is not easy as plastic is all around us but being conscientious and doing our bit will help protect the earth we live on.

This year, the student council is off to a strong start with lofty goals for the upcoming year. As elected by their peers as representatives of the entire class, the student council aims to act on the wishes of the class and really make change in the elementary school. So far, the kids want to work towards the following:

• Eliminating plastics being used in the school canteen. Plastics are causing a tremendous amount of damage on the world outside our doors. We want to stop this!

• Improving the school playground and making equipment both more fun and safe! Also, opening up more avenues for kids to explore and play after school!

• Hosting fundraisers to help sponsor charities, both local and international.

• Focus on praising and celebrating classes who exemplify the PYP Attributes and having a contest among classes for who can do the best job.

With your support, we're hoping to have a great year! Hopefully you will see some of our progress in the coming weeks!

Dear CIS Parents,

International Fair Day is happening on Sept. 30, 2017.

Last Monday, Sept. 4, a group of parents, teachers and administrators gathered to share ideas on the upcoming IFD.

PTA scheduled a follow-up meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017 at 3pm in the canteen annex to finalize details and to get parents' commitment and involvement in the preparation and organization of the different food booths.

We encourage ALL PARENTS to attend.

Another way for parents to get involved is by signing-up as Homeroom Parents. We still need HR Parents for PS2, PS3, Kinder, G7, G9, G11A & 11B, G12A & 12B. Feel free to fill-in the need if you're a parent in one of those aforementioned grade levels.

Thank you and have an amazing weekend with family and friends.

See you on Tuesday, Sept. 12th.
