New Features in Version 3.8

The following sections list the major features that were added to Avid NewsCutter XP v3.8. For more information and procedures on how to use these new features, see the NewsCutter XP Help.

Color Correction Feature

NewsCutter XP now includes a Color Correction mode that allows you to correct color across entire sequences. Color Correction mode works with video material once it has been edited into a sequence. You make color adjustments in Color Correction mode by selecting segments within a sequence and then altering their color values. The system associates these adjustments with the sequence on which they are made and applies them in real time when the sequence is processed for playback.

The color corrections that you make in Color Correction mode do not cause any permanent change to clips in bins or to their associated media files. If you make a color adjustment to a clip in one sequence, that adjustment does not apply to the same clip in a different sequence.

This feature adds a new tab to the Command Palette called CC (Color Correction). Enter Color Correction mode by clicking the Color Correction button in the Command Palette.

For more information on Color Correction and how to operate this feature, see the Avid Color Correction User’s Guide on the online CD-ROM and Help.

Stretching the Source/Record Monitor

You can stretch your Source/Record monitor into two monitors. This lets you open a source clip in the Source monitor (left monitor) and display your sequence and provides the usual Record monitor functions in the Record monitor (right monitor).

Hardware and Software Requirements

7

To view dual monitors:

t Click either edge of the Source/Record monitor, and drag it to the outside.

Support for International Characters

International Character Support (ICS) allows you to display and input the characters in languages other than English. You can instruct your Windows 2000 operating system to allow you to choose between English and a specific locale such as French, German, Chinese, or Japanese. This allows you to input and display characters in your chosen language even though you are using the basic English operating system. For more information about ICS, see “International Character Support” on page 38.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The NewsCutter XP application is available in a software-only version as well as a complete system.

Qualified Platforms

Avid has qualified the NewsCutter XP software to run on the following platforms:

• Dell® Latitude® C840 — laptop

drive:\Program Files\Avid\Utilities\SP3_Batch_File

If you used the Avid Recovery CD-ROM to update your system then the patch is already installed.

• Minimum 512 MB of RAM (HP Workstation xw8000 systems ship with 1 GB of RAM.)

c Your system must have the Windows 2000 operating system installed and the required amount of RAM before you install NewsCutter XP v3.8. Purchase additional memory based on the manufacturer’s documentation.

c Do not update the system’s BIOS unless you are instructed to do so by Avid Customer Support. A newer system BIOS might not be supported on your Avid editing system.

For more information and a procedure on setting the resolution, see the Avid NewsCutter XP Setup Guide.

n Higher screen resolutions can be used. Screen resolutions will be limited by the system graphics board and the monitor specifications.

Updating Your Application Key

The application key, commonly referred to as a dongle, allows the Avid software to run on your system.

c Protect your application key from loss or theft. Your Avid software does not function without it, and acquiring a new key from Avid involves a fee.

There are two different programs to update dongles:

• A dongle versioner is a software program created to update many Avid systems and is normally included in a software Maintenance Kit.

• A dongle updater is a software program created to update a specific Avid system.

Depending on your current version:

• If you are upgrading from NewsCutter XP v3.0 to NewsCutter XP v3.8, you will not receive a dongle updater floppy disk or CD-ROM because your dongle does not need to be updated.

• If you are upgrading from NewsCutter XP v2.1 or earlier to NewsCutter XP v3.8, you will need to update your application key before you start the software. The NewsCutter XP v3.8 upgrade kit contains a floppy disk or CD-ROM with the update program.

To update your dongle:

t If you received a dongle versioner floppy disk or CD-ROM with a Version Protection Kit or Maintenance Kit, you will need to use this floppy disk or CD-ROM to update the dongle after installing the new software.

t If you purchased this version as an upgrade, you have received a unique dongle updater floppy disk or CD-ROM that reflects a specific System ID. You will need to use this floppy disk or CD-ROM to update the dongle after installing the new software.

The floppy disk or CD-ROM includes instructions for running the dongle versioner or updater.

Performing a Custom Installation

You can perform a custom installation to install particular files from the Avid NewsCutter XP CD-ROM. For example, you might want to install only the serial drivers or only the utilities. You can also reinstall an individual component of the NewsCutter XP application if it becomes lost or damaged.

Suggestions for Optimum Performance

19

Suggestions for Optimum Performance

Windows is a multitasking operating system. However, background tasks can interrupt time-critical operations, such as recording, playing, or rendering. Make sure that background tasks are not running while you are running the NewsCutter XP application.

c It is important the you do not automatic perform Windows Update because it might prompt you to install software that is not compatible with this version of your Avid editing application. In particular, you should not update the Java Runtime software to a version higher than v1.3. Some of the Avid applications, such as MetaSync Manager, do not work correctly with Java v1.4.

The following list contains suggestions for ensuring optimum performance when running the NewsCutter XP application on Windows systems:

• Do not enable the Windows Display setting “Show window contents while dragging.” This setting hinders redraw performance on the NewsCutter XP system.

• Do not leave the Console window open when you are editing. The NewsCutter XP system performance slows considerably when the Console window is open.

• Do not leave a Windows Explorer window open. Windows Explorer will try to update file information.

• Do not leave an e-mail application open if it is set to do periodic checks for mail.

• Do not run any application that periodically “wakes up” and performs an action (for example, virus scanners and disk fragment utilities).

• Disable screen savers.

• Do not insert a compact disc in a drive during operation. Most CD-ROM drives and software perform an autoscan or autostart operation.

n The NewsCutter XP system ships with Autorun disabled.

Page 20: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

20

• Do not keep media on the same partition where the application is installed. Avid recommends external media drives.

• Always disable system sounds in the Windows Sound Control Panel.

• Always use small fonts with the display driver to avoid missing characters in the application dialog boxes.

• After moving a drive from one system to another, restart your system. Windows will not recognize the drive until you restart the system.

• To ensure you do not accidentally delete locked items through your desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and select Properties. In the Recycle Bin Properties window, click the Global tab. Select the option “Display delete confirmation dialog.”

• When you are advancing by single frames through the Timeline, turn off Render On-the-Fly in the Clip menu to enable faster response time.

• Do not name files with special characters (/ \ : ? ” < > | *) because Windows does not recognize special characters in file names. Bin names are now limited to 27 characters (not including the four characters reserved for the file name extension).

• Do not schedule automatic backups at times when your NewsCutter XP system might be in use.

• Do not run any application that includes prescheduled or automatically scheduled activities, such as a calendar program.

• Do not leave other applications running. Some applications, such as Microsoft Office, run background processes.

• Do not allow the Find Fast background process (find.exe) to run. The process will try to update its cache of file and folder locations. Check your Startup folder, and delete the file if it is there.

n Locate the find.exe file by using the Search function from the Start button.

QuickTime Version

Avid editing applications run on QuickTime 5 and QuickTime 6. The installer automatically installs QuickTime 5. If you want to use QuickTime 6, you can download the latest version of QuickTime from Apple’s Web site: www.apple.com/quicktime/download.

When you install or update QuickTime, choose the Recommended installation rather than the Minimum installation. The Minimum installation does not install all the components needed by your Avid application. When the installer asks for a QuickTime Pro registration key, ignore the dialog box and click Next to proceed with the installation.

Creating a DVD

You will need DirectX 8.1 to create a DVD. If you plan on using the Create DVD option from the File menu, you might receive a message stating you need to install DirectX 8.1. Avid includes DirectX 8.1 (dxsetup.exe) in the DirectX81 folder for you to install when using the DVD AuthorScript® application. The DirectX81 folder is in the Goodies folder located on the Avid NewsCutter XP CD-ROM.

User Settings

User settings are not backward compatible. Avid recommends creating new user settings for this version.

Goodies Folder

Avid supplies a Goodies folder located on the Avid NewsCutter XP CD-ROM. Access the Goodies folder by browsing the Avid NewsCutter XP CD-ROM. This folder contains programs and files you might find useful when trying to perform functions beyond the scope of the NewsCutter XP software.

All information and product availability is subject to change without notice.

Linking OHCI Drivers

The NewsCutter XP application does not use the default Microsoft OHCI/1394 driver; instead, Avid uses a custom OHCI driver developed by Texas Instruments. When you first connect a camera or deck (DV device) to the system via OHCI 1394, if the NewsCutter XP application is running, it will install the custom Texas Instruments driver automatically.

When you plug in the DV device (such as a camera) and the application is not running, the Hardware Wizard will appear. Either manually install the driver by using the wizard, or click Cancel and start the NewsCutter XP application. NewsCutter XP will recognize the DV device and will install the custom driver.

Use the DVSelect utility to link the Microsoft driver if you want to use the Microsoft driver with a third-party application.

To connect DV devices with a particular driver:

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Avid, point to Utilities, and then click DVSelect.

The DV Driver Select dialog box appears.

2. Select one of the following:

t Microsoft DV Camera and VCR Driver

t NewsCutter XP/Texas Instruments 1394 DV Camcorder Driver

25

3. Select “Switch drivers for only those devices that are currently turned on.”

4. Connect and turn on any DV devices you want to link to the selected driver.

5. Click OK.

The selected driver is linked to the currently connected devices that are turned on.

If you do not select this option, the driver is linked to all devices you have ever connected to the system.

Information for NewsCutter Users

Avid has made the user interface and functionality of the NewsCutter XP application resemble the NewsCutter application. Because of the physical differences in the hardware, some of the selections or capabilities in the NewsCutter system might differ. Some differences you might see include:

• NewsCutter XP systems do not provide an LTC input connector to accept an external timecode signal. Without this ability, you cannot add timecode to incoming external media.

When deck control is disabled, the system’s internal time-of-day clock will be used to generate an internal timecode.

• In Trim mode, use the arrow keys below the Trim monitor to move to the next and previous frames. The keyboard shortcut keys J-K-L do not operate in Trim mode on the NewsCutter XP system.

SCSI DVD Burner

If you plan to use a SCSI DVD burner (such as a Pioneer S201) to create DVDs (on desktop systems only), you need to install a driver. When you attempt to use the SCSI DVD burner without installing the driver, an error message appears stating that the ASPI drivers are not installed.

To install the driver:

1. Locate the Sonic_driver folder where the Avid application is installed.

2. Copy the pfc.sys file from the Sonic_driver folder to:C:\WINNT\system32\drivers folder

3. Double-click the pfc.reg file in the Sonic_driver folder to add the driver to the registry.

The Registry Editor dialog box appears.

4. To add the information to the registry, click Yes.

5. After you are informed that the information has successfully been added, click OK.

Antivirus Applications

Antivirus programs containing autoscanning features can interfere with the operation of the NewsCutter XP application. For example, some antivirus programs can be configured to run in the background and to scan all files for viruses whenever they are opened, copied, or moved. Since virus scanning is a processor- and disk-intensive activity, it can interfere with recording and playing real-time effects in the NewsCutter XP application.

Avid recommends you do not scan all files or schedule any background tasks such as virus scanning when you are using your NewsCutter XP application.

File deletion protection utilities also consume system resources and could interfere with the proper operation of the NewsCutter XP application. These utilities automatically back up any files that are deleted, even temporary files created and deleted by the NewsCutter XP application. This consumes a large amount of disk space.

c When you are in a workgroup environment using an Avid Unity MediaManager server with the Norton AntiVirus® utility, you need to turn off the Auto-Protection feature when you access Avid Unity MediaManager. You can then turn the Auto-Protection feature back on. You need to perform this each time you access Avid Unity MediaManager. In addition, do not perform a Live Update.

Page 27: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Special Notes

To turn off the Auto-Protection feature:

1. Start Norton AntiVirus.

The Norton AntiVirus window opens.

2. Click the Options button in the Norton AntiVirus window.

3. Select the Auto-Protect from the System list.

4. Deselect the following options:

- Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up

- Run or opened

- Create or downloaded

5. Click OK.

6. Close the Norton AntiVirus window.

AVX Plug-Ins and Memory

Multiple AVX plug-ins you have applied to a sequence are now kept resident in memory at the same time. When you close a bin containing the sequence, the plug-ins are also closed, freeing the memory.

To close all currently opened plug-ins:

1. Choose Console from the Tools menu.

The Console window opens

2. Type closeallavxplugins, and press Enter.

This command closes all currently opened plug-ins. They will automatically open again when needed.

Importing QuickTime Files Created with an Avid Codec

If you are importing a QuickTime® file created with an Avid codec, and the file’s resolution does not match the current Import setting, a dialog box appears by default. This dialog box asks which resolution you want to select, and to which files you want to apply your choice. Make your choices, and then click OK to continue with the import. See the limitations listed in “Import and Export” on page 51.

Black Striping Your Tape

Before you perform a digital cut, Avid recommends you black stripe your tape. This allows for timecode on your tape.

To black stripe your tape:

1. Rewind the tape to the point where you want to begin the black stripe. Put the camera into Record Pause mode. You will have to do this manually, without deck controls.

2. In the NewsCutter XP application, load a clip with audio into the Timeline.

3. Deselect video, and select audio (both tracks) in the Track Selector panel.

4. Play the clip for a few frames and stop.

In your Client monitor, you should see a black frame. Once you stop, there should be silence. That's what you will use to stripe your tape.

5. Press the Pause button to start the camera recording.

6. Stop the camera at whatever point you want to stop the black stripe.

n The silence you record will match the sample rate of your current project setting.

32

The following sections provided changes that have occurred since the documentation was printed.

ENPS Support in the NRCS Tool

The Newsroom Computer System (NRCS) tool lets you use one computer to view stories and rundowns located on an Avid iNEWS™ server or on an Electronic News Production System (ENPS) server and to edit sequences in NewsCutter XP.

You use the NRCS tool to connect to an iNEWS server to access story scripts and to edit stories on your NewsCutter XP system. When you open a story in the NRCS tool, you can make formatting and content changes to the story instead of moving to an iNEWS workstation to do the editing. After you have made changes to the story, you can save the changes, which are then available to others using the same server. You can also access stories on the ENPS server from the NRCS tool, but you cannot make edits or formatting or content changes to the stories.

n You cannot write back to the ENPS server.

Using the duration of the story, you can build a sequence in NewsCutter XP. Once you have the duration of the story in the Timeline, you can add footage to match the scripted story. After some quick video editing, the story is ready to air.

n Your ENPS administrator must first register the NewsCutter XP system as a client on the ENPS server. When you configure the NRCS tool, the client name is used to log in to the ENPS server. A login dialog box does not appear for the ENPS server.

Configuring the ENPS Server for Avid Clients

Three required elements must be set up on the ENPS server before NewsCutter XP can connect as a client to the ENPS server:

• MOS ID

• Program

• IP address

When you click the Extra Fields button in the Record tool, the Field Selection dialog box opens. The Field Selection list includes any extra fields already created, in addition to any user-defined text fields from the target bin. The fields you select in the Field Selection list will appear in the Record tool below the Cmnt field. You can delete the extra fields by deleting the column in the bin window.

Satellite Timed Recording

When Satellite mode is enabled, the Timed Record option allows you to schedule a recording session for upcoming live satellite feeds. The Scheduled Record button opens a dialog box for creating a recording schedule. You can select to have the recording happen once or to loop the recording to repeat each day.

When the time-of-day (TOD) timecode is within 10 seconds of the next scheduled recording time (and if the Record tool is still active), the Record tool goes into Coincidence Wait mode (blinking yellow Record light) and subsequently begins recording.

n You can still use the Record tool with Scheduled Record mode enabled as long as you stop using the Record tool before the next scheduled recording session. You cannot do a scheduled live-feed recording if the Record tool is in use. The Record tool must be the active window for a scheduled recording to occur.

Quick Record Mode

Quick Record mode allows the deck to control the recording of media into NewsCutter XP. When Quick Record mode is enabled, NewsCutter XP starts recording automatically whenever the servo-lock signal is detected from the deck.

When the Toggle Source button shows the Deck Record icon, the Servo Lock Mode check box in the source pane appears. Use the Servo Lock Mode check box to enable and disable Quick Record mode. When Quick Record mode is enabled, a check mark appears in the Servo Lock Mode button and the Toggle Source button changes to Quick Record mode.

Blur Effect

The Blur effect is similar to the Mosaic effect. Both allow you to obscure part of an image, such as a face, by distorting the pixels within a defined area. Apply the Blur effect as you would any segment effect, and then use the Effect Editor to adjust the appearance. The Blur effect is in the Image effect category.

International Character Support

NewsCutter XP v3.8 now supports international character support (ICS) through your Windows operating system. ICS allows you to display and input characters in languages other than English. There are two basic methods for using ICS:

• Install the local language operating system, and work within the operating system.

• Use the standard English language operating system, install the language pack, and set the locale to your local language.

n Avid Unity MediaNetwork v3.2 or later supports ICS. For more information, see the MediaNetwork documentation.

n ICS is not supported with MetaSync. For the latest information about ICS, see the International Character Support link on the Knowledge Center. To access the Knowledge Center, see “Accessing the Knowledge Center” on page 21.

Using a Local Language Operating System

If you use a local language operating system, consider the following items:

• When you start the Avid editing application for the first time, it automatically creates a keyboard setting for that language. You can view the keyboard mapping by clicking the appropriate Keyboard setting in the Settings scroll list. If you are using a language other than English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish, you might need to adjust the mapping for the keyboard so the keys in the Keyboard palette match the keys on your physical keyboard. See “Using Foreign Keyboard Mapping” on page 40.

Page 39: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

39

• When you bring projects and bins forward from earlier version of NewsCutter XP to NewsCutter XP v3.8, you might need to use the CleanEncode utility to convert the file names so they can be viewed correctly in Windows Explorer and in the Avid editing application. See “Moving Older Projects to this Version on Windows” on page 41.

Using Other Languages On an English Operating System

The English version of the Windows operating system allows you to choose between English and a specific locale such as French, German, Chinese, or Japanese. You can input and display characters in your chosen language even though you are using an English language operating system.

To take advantage of ICS on an English language operating system:

• Instruct your operating system to display the appropriate language in menus and dialog boxes and specify the language you want to use for keyboard layouts. Follow the instructions in the following section “Non-English Character Support” on page 39.

• When using a language other than English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish, you might need to adjust the mapping for the keyboard so the keys in the Keyboard palette match the keys on your physical keyboard. See “Using Foreign Keyboard Mapping” on page 40.

Non-English Character Support

You can specify a non-English keyboard layout and text entry format for the language in which you want to type.

n The operating system does not need to be in the same language as that in which you are typing.

Page 40: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

9. Click Set as Default.

10. Click Apply. If you need to install additional files, the Insert CD-ROM dialog box opens.

11. Click OK.

The Files Needed dialog box opens.

12. Follow the instructions, and then click OK.

13. To have your selected language appear on the taskbar, select “Enable indicator on taskbar.”

14. Click OK.

Using Foreign Keyboard Mapping

When you start the Avid editing application under a new locale, the application automatically creates a Keyboard setting for your language. You can view the keyboard layout by clicking the appropriate Keyboard setting in the Settings scroll list.

Page 41: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

41

The default Avid keyboard layouts for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish languages map correctly to the characters on the physical keyboard. However, if you are using a different language, the display in the Keyboard palette might not match your physical keyboard layout. You can use the Foreign Keyboard Mapping button in the Keyboard palette to display the correct character in the Keyboard palette.

n The Foreign Keyboard Mapping function is not needed for English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish.

To set the keyboard mapping for a key:

1. Double-click Keyboard in the Settings scroll list in the Project window.

The Keyboard palette opens.

2. Compare the layout to your physical keyboard.

If some of the letters do not match, you can change the characters displayed in the Keyboard palette.

3. Click the Foreign Keyboard Mapping button.

4. Click the key that you want to change in the Keyboard palette.

The key changes to blue.

5. Press the corresponding key on your keyboard.

The image in the Keyboard palette changes to match your keyboard, and the mapped key remains blue.

n Each language has a certain number of keys that do not map to functions in the Avid editing application. These are referred to as “dead” keys. You cannot map functions to these dead keys. If you try to do so, the system displays an error message.

Moving Older Projects to this Version on Windows

CleanEncode is a utility that changes the character encoding method for a file name from MacRoman to ANSI or vice versa. If you are moving older projects to this version on Windows, you might need to use CleanEncode to convert the older MacRoman encoding to ANSI encoding.

Page 42: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

42

Use CleanEncode on Windows systems to do the following:

• Converting special characters in project names, bin names, tape names, or other Avid metadata. Specifically, this includes characters with a value greater than 127 in the ASCII character set. Such characters are common in Western European languages and include accented characters (for example, â or ê).

• Moving projects from one of the following Avid editing applications (Windows only) to the current version:

- Avid Media Composer or Film Composer v11.5 or earlier

- Avid Symphony releases v4.5 or earlier

- Avid Xpress v5.5 or earlier

- Avid NewsCutter v3.5 or earlier

- Avid NewsCutter XP v3.5 or earlier

- Avid Xpress DV 3.5 or earlier

Complete instructions for using CleanEncode can be found in the CleanEncodeGuide.pdf file. This file is available in the CleanEncode folder in the Utilities folder.

n If you use CleanEncode to process the files in your OMFI MediaFiles folder, delete the .pmr and .mdb database files after you run CleanEncode and restart the Avid editing application. This will ensure that the Avid application recognizes the newly converted names.

n When you upgrade an Avid Unity MediaNetwork workgroup to MediaNetwork v3.3, MediaNetwork automatically converts file names to file names with characters in Unicode™. If you plan to move Avid files from a the versions listed above onto an existing MediaNetwork v3.3 system, use CleanEncode on the files before you move them onto the network.

Recommendations and Restrictions

The following are recommendations and restrictions for using international character support on your Avid system.

Page 43: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Documentation Changes

43

Avid Supports English Plus One Locale

Make sure that your projects do not contain characters from more than one locale. String compare searches might not work correctly if you combine file names from different locales.

n Within a workgroup, all the systems on the network must be either English or one specific locale.

Entering ASCII Characters in Double-Byte Systems

The following restriction applies to customers who work on double-byte (two-byte) operating systems: If you use ASCII characters to name bins, projects, tapes, or other Avid elements, use single-byte characters. If you use double-byte characters, the characters might appear with extra space between them and the names might not be recognizable by other systems.

Operating systems that use a double-byte character system usually allow the user to choose between single-byte ASCII or double-byte ASCII characters. If you have a choice, use single-byte characters when entering ASCII text.

Characters to Avoid When Naming Avid Elements

Do not use the Japanese yen symbol in the ASCII character set. The system converts the symbol to a backslash, and this can cause problems with pathnames.

Do not use the Y-acute and Y-diaeresis characters. The system does not recognize the Y-acute character, and it can cause problems with file recognition. The system might not display the Y-diaeresis character correctly.

Page 44: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

44

If you plan to move projects between Macintosh and Windows systems, avoid using characters that are not in both the MacRoman and Latin1 (ANSI) character sets. The following two files on the Knowledge Center list the characters you should avoid:

• MacRoman Characters not in ANSI Encoding

• ANSI Characters not in MacRoman Encoding

n The latest version of this document is also on the International Character Support page, see “Accessing the Knowledge Center” on page 21.

To display the characters in the HTML files correctly, you might have to set your Web browser to display characters in Unicode format.

To display characters in Unicode format on Internet Explorer:

t Select View > Encoding > More > Unicode (UTF-8).

EDL Manager Does Not Save Diacritical Marks or Chinese Characters

You can display diacritical marks and Chinese characters in EDL Manager but you cannot save an EDL and reopen it with those characters preserved. This includes saving the file to the desktop or to an RT-11 formatted disk. If you plan to create and save an EDL from your sequences you must use ASCII names for tape names.

n It is common for customers that use EDLs to copy the EDL onto an RT-11 formatted floppy disk. The RT-11 format has a very limited character set: A-Z (capital letters only), 0-9, space, and $.

Mouse Jog and Shuttle

The Mouse Jog and the Mouse Shuttle feature documented in the Help is incorrect. This feature is not available in NewsCutter XP.

Page 45: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

45

Using Match Frame to Locate the Source Clips of Motion Effects

You can use the Match Frame feature to locate the source clip (a master clip or subclip) of a motion effect. For information on using match frame, see the Avid NewsCutter XP User’s Guide or the Help.

To use the Match Frame feature to locate the source clip of a motion effect:

1. In the Timeline, place the position indicator on the motion effect you want to match.

2. Select the track for the motion effect you want for a match.

3. Alt+click the Match Frame button in the Other tab of the Command palette.

The source clip of the motion effect is loaded into the Source monitor.

Using Advanced Keyframes

The effects guide describes how to use new Advanced Keyframe model. An additional document, Supplemental Information for Standard Keyframes and Advanced Keyframes, discusses some of the differences between standard keyframes and advanced keyframes, and provides suggestions about when you might want to use one or the other. For the most up-to-date information on using advanced keyframes, see the Supplemental Information for Standard Keyframes and Advanced Keyframes.

This document is available on the Knowledge Center in the White Papers section. For information on accessing the Knowledge Center, see “Accessing the Knowledge Center” on page 21.

Known Bugs and Limitations

47

Audio

Bugs

➤ Audio Loop Play might not work from the AudioSuite Tool or from the Timeline.

➤ Audio Mix tool interface focus gets stuck on the first track area that you edit. This prevents you from using the numeric keypad to make changes on the other track areas. For example, if you make edits in Track 1 you might not be able to make changes in track 2.

Workaround: Do not use the numeric keypad to enter values - just use the sliders. Or restart the application to reinitialize the Audio Mix tool.

➤ Digital audio scrub might fail in a sequence with mixed resolutions.

Limitations

➤ You might hear poor audio playback quality when using the Dell Precision 340 in clips and sequences when in Blue Dot mode and a 1394 device attached. The audio playback performance decreases as you stress the system. For example, stress is applied if you perform a sample rate conversions on-the-fly or make changes to default audio setting or audio tool’s performance.

n No quality is lost going out to tape, green dot playback is not affected, and monitoring through a 1394 device is not affected. This is a monitoring issue only.

Workaround: Switch to Green Dot mode or disconnect your 1394 device.

➤ When playing audio or performing a digital cut in Blue Dot mode with a DV device connected, you might hear random pops and sudden pitch and speed changes. This happens on any media but, pops and pitch changes are more obvious with tone media. If you monitor the audio from the deck or camera, it sounds fine; no pops or speed changes.

Workaround: Switch to Green Dot mode or disconnect the DV device.

Page 48: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

48

➤ The Voice-over (VO) button does not work in the Record tool when OHCI is selected for the audio input. For example, you cannot use a camera's microphone to record a voice-over.

Workaround: Perform voice-overs using any of the other audio inputs. You need to disable deck control in the Record tool to perform voice-over using any other audio inputs (for example; Microphone, CD Audio).

Color Correction

➤ Bugs

Entering Split-Screen view causes video to shift position.

➤ Opening the Effect Editor in Color Correction mode causes a single Source/Record monitor to become dual Source/Record monitors.

➤ In Split-Screen view, the uncorrected side does not show the effects that were applied before the color correction. For example, if you have two video tracks and you put a real-time Superimpose effect on track V2, you will see the superimposition until you enter Split-Screen view. Then, you will see only track V1 on the uncorrected side.

➤ In Split-Screen view, video flashes on the uncorrected side when a color correction adjustment is made. This happens when Real-Time Image Updating is turned off.

➤ Play buttons in Source/Record monitors do not turn green during play or show off-speed fps. When you first start Color Correction, the Play button lights during play. As soon as you make a correction, the button will not light during play.

Workaround: To get it to light again, play at 2X speed, stop, and then play again.

Page 49: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Known Bugs and Limitations

49

Digital Cut

Limitations

➤ When you are creating a digital cut through some transcoders to Sony UVW and PVW series decks, the Chroma sync might not lock.

➤ Some DV cameras detect when a video monitor is connected to the camera and send video to all of its outputs, including the 1394 connector. (Even if the monitor is using an analog connection.) If you attempt to do a digital cut back to the camera using the 1394 cable, no input is allowed.

Workaround: Unplug the monitor cable when you want to send a digital cut back to the camera.

➤ Digital Cut is not always frame accurate. You might see the following inaccuracies, especially when using MiniDV decks:

• Occasionally, the first frame might be cut one frame late. When this happens, the first video frame of the sequence appears on the first and second frames on tape. The audio remains in sync, so the first audio frame of the sequence is cut to the second frame on tape.

• Extra video frames might be cut to tape at the end of the cut. The number ranges from 3 to 5 frames.

Effects

Bugs

➤ Performing a video mixdown of a PAL sequence containing both DV 25 420 and DV 25 411 resolutions might take a long time.

Page 50: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

50

➤ A long video mixdown with unrendered effects causes an Insufficient Memory error. A video mixdown with many unrendered effects (such as a 15-minute sequence with 176 effects) will abort with the following error message:

Insufficient Memory error. Keep or discard?

Click Keep; the mixdown is good up until that point. This problem does not occur with Render In/Out or when rendering a long effect.

Workaround: Render the effects before creating the mixdown, divide the video mixdown into smaller segments, or upgrade the system memory.

➤ The system might run noticeably slower or access violation errors might appear after performing hundreds of renders.

Workaround: Restart your NewsCutter XP application at least once a week.

➤ Effects: Rendering a segment effect with a nested submaster effect generates the following error:

Exception: Drv Fatal Error: 6 DMA_Buffers_Empty

Workaround: Step into the effect and render each track individually.

➤ The following problems occur with AVX Plug-ins and transition effects:

• Transition effects do not unrender when the AVX plug-in on the segment is unrendered.

• If you apply a dissolve to a rendered AVX effect, the system does not automatically recalculate the behavior of the effect to extend around the transition point if necessary.

Page 51: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Known Bugs and Limitations

51

Import and Export

Bugs

➤ If you attempt to import DV 50 media files from a CD-ROM, the following error appears:Exception: FILE_OTHER, filename:D\<filename>.omf Exception: SYS_ERROR, status:87, msg: The parameter is incorrect

Workaround: Copy the DV 50 media to a local folder on the Avid system and imported media from that folder.

➤ When you import PAL OMF to a PAL project, the File Field Order Import setting should be set to Odd.

Currently, Even is the default PAL setting.

Workaround: Set the File Field Order to Odd for PAL.

➤ Export AFE export takes much longer across a network than it does exporting to a local drive. When this occurs the Task Manager reports that the Avid application is not responding even thought the export is taking place.

Workaround: Export to a local drive and then copy the exported files across the network.

➤ If you have a sequence containing multiple imported files, a batch import might not automatically locate all the files if they reside in different folders. It might use the location of the first file for all the remaining files.

Workaround: When you perform the batch import, set the file location for each file manually.

Page 52: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

52

➤ Creating an OMFI export using the Consolidate and Embed options might fail when you attempt export a sub clip that is associated with a larger master clip. The system displays an error that you have reached the 2GB file limit.

Workaround: Either consolidate the sequence first and then export, or cut the portion of the master clip that you want into a sequence, and then consolidate and export.

➤ Several export options do not appear if QuickTime 5.0 Minimum Installation is installed on the NewsCutter XP system. The options that do not appear include those for exporting DV Stream, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, QuickTime, and QuickTime Reference. This problem only happens if you install QuickTime 5.0 on your system and select the Minimum Installation option.

The NewsCutter XP software installer automatically installs QuickTime 5.0. QuickTime 5.0 is supported by this version but is not shipped with the version.

Workaround: If you have QuickTime 5.0 installed on your system and you notice that the export options are missing, Install QuickTime 6.0 and select the Minimum installation.

International Character Support

➤ Bugs

When using diacritical marks, exporting a bin as AFE with the default name might cause MediaLog to freeze. The resulting files have incorrect filenames.

Workaround: Don't use the default name when exporting a file as AFE, ALE or Tab Delimited. Rename the file to be exported in the Export dialog box.

Page 53: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Known Bugs and Limitations

53

➤ On an English OS, before importing files with diacritical marks that were created in and exported from an Avid editing system on a French/Italian/German/Spanish (FIGS) OS, the files might display incorrectly. When this happens, the files cannot be imported. This happens more frequently with capital letters that have diacritical marks.

Workaround: Rename the files and import them. You can use diacritical marks in the renaming.

➤ You cannot save an EDL template file that contains Chinese characters.

➤ If you are working on a FIGS OS and have media files that were created on an Asian OS using Chinese characters, as well as media files created on a FIGS OS, the Media Stream Manager (when you launch the Avid editing application) might display the following error message in a dialog box:Exception: CM_MOB_IN_USE An error occurred validating the media directory.

If the system displays this message, click Ignore All. If you click Continue, all of the media files will remain offline. If you click Ignore All, the Asian media files will be ignored but the FIGS media files will be read correctly.

➤ When typing in user names, avoid switching between Roman and Asian characters. Depending on the number and juxtaposition of Roman and Asian characters, a warning might appear and unwanted user names will be added to the Avid users list.

Limitations

➤ When naming Avid elements, do not use fonts that have an “@” sign at the start of the font name. These fonts are used when intending to display text vertically and, with elements such as bin and clip names, will position letters/characters on their side.

➤ When using a Changjie or New Changjie keyboard, some characters are displayed as question marks in the Avid editing application.

Page 54: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

54

➤ If you cannot display Chinese or Japanese characters in the Avid editing application, you might need to regenerate the asifont.map file under the Japanese or Chinese locale. Use one of the following procedures:

• Navigate to Program Files/Avid/Avid NewsCutter XP and locate the asifont.map file. Delete the file. Make sure you are in the Japanese or Chinese locale and start the application again. The system will automatically create a new Japanese or Chinese asifont.map file.

• Or uninstall the application. Then reinstall the application under the Japanese or Chinese locale.

Note that the Avid editing system uses the current locale to create the asifont.map file appropriate for that locale.

➤ When you click the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window while in foreign keyboard mapping mode, foreign keyboard mapping mode is turned off. When you open the Keyboard window from the Settings scroll list and select Map Foreign Keyboard, you can map user-selectable buttons to the keyboard. If the Windows operating system is set to French or German regional settings, and you click the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window, a message box opens that says foreign keyboard mapping mode has been turned off.

Workaround: Avoid clicking the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window. If you do, select Standard, and then select Map Foreign Keyboard again to return to foreign keyboard mapping mode.

MetaSync

Bugs

➤ You cannot use OUT points to autosync a MetaSync enhancement clip with video. When you select a video clip in the bin along with a MetaSync enhancement clip and select Bin > AutoSync, the AutoSync dialog box does not open; the system uses the default AutoSync method of sync to IN points.

Workaround: Make sure you have IN points set correctly, and then select select Bin > AutoSync. The clips will be synced to the IN points.

Known Bugs and Limitations

55

➤ Clicking the Check Links button in an enhancement window spreadsheet can change the spreadsheet to solid gray. When you open an existing enhancement file, the system opens a spreadsheet window that contains the Check Links button. If you click the button, the spreadsheet window might turn solid gray.

Play

Bugs

➤ If you are using the Audio Loop Play feature with an audio tool (for example, Audio Mix and Audio Suite) on a clip or sequence that is less than 3 seconds long and have a 1394 device attached, the audio will skip or stall during loop playback. The Audio Loop Play feature works fine if your clips and sequences are 3 seconds or longer.

Workaround: Disconnect the 1394 device from the system.

➤ Desktop playback of video is not supported on the second monitor of dual-monitor systems. The video only updates once the clip has finished playing. At this point, the last frame of the clip is displayed. Audio plays normally. Playback through OHCI is working, but you see a corrupt signal when viewing the output of the deck. When you perform a digital cut to the deck and then play back the tape, the signal looks fine.

Workaround: Make sure Source/Record monitors are placed on the Boot monitor.

Recording

Bugs

➤ Stop recording when your media drive has approximately 2 GB of space remaining. Due to unpredictable conditions such as disk fragmentation, the NewsCutter XP application determines that the media drive is filled before it is actually out of space.

Page 56: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

56

➤ The Avid editing application might issue an incorrect error message when it reaches the filesize limit that you have set. For example, if you set the file size limit to 2GB in the Record settings dialog box and then begin recording, the system might display the following error message when the file reaches 2 GB:

Record aborted due to lack of storage space on disk Discard/Keep?

If you select Keep, the system saves the 2 GB file correctly.

The HDW-500 deck template does not create a frame accurate record when used with an HDW-F500 deck.

Workaround: When working with an HDW-F500 deck, use the generic deck template.

Limitations

➤ If you use a DVCPRO deck to create a PAL 411 digital cut, you might experience the following:

• Digital cuts that exceed 10 minutes might produce an AdmAdm Overrun error.

• Digital cuts might not stop automatically when the digital cut is completed.

Workaround: Turn off “Poll deck during digital cut” in the Deck Preferences when using a DVCPRO deck.

➤ The video and audio might stutter while performing passthrough recording. When the codec does not get enough processing time, it will skip frames to keep up with the video passing through. Faster systems minimize the stutter, but this can occur on any system when background tasks are using processor time. The resulting clip will not contain the stutter; it will play fine.

Workaround: Stop all background tasks to minimize or eliminate stutter during a passthrough recording.

Page 57: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Known Bugs and Limitations

57

➤ Recording across timecode breaks does not always capture the frames around the timecode break. This happens with products that use RS-422 for deck control. When you select “Use control track for preroll,” sometimes the system misses as many as 9 frames before the timecode break and 12 frames after the timecode break.

Workaround: Manually set mark IN to the first frame of the clip after the timecode break, or record on-the-fly with the timecode track turned off.

System

Bug

➤ When you select a column in a bin, the column is highlighted. If another column is selected, the first column remains highlighted at a lighter shade.

If a third column is selected, the first two columns that were selected both change to the same lighter shade. This continues for each additional column selected in the bin. When you select a previously selected column, it then appears unselected.

Workaround: Refresh the window to show the correct selected column. You can refresh the window by resizing, minimizing, and maximizing the window, as well as by dragging or opening another window over the Bin window.

1. Locate the Avid editing application folder and open it.

2. Double-click the SupportingFiles folder

3. Double-click the Avid_MediaFiles folder.

4. Select the msmFMID.pmr and the msmMMOB.mdb files, and then press the Delete key.

5. Restart the Avid editing application.

Version 3.8 Release Notes

58

Limitation

➤ If you receive the following message when starting the Avid editing system, the Avid editing application will not start:Exception occurred while initializing Media Stream Manager, exception: MSM no directory specified.

Workaround: To delete the necessary two files:

1. Locate the Avid editing application folder and open it.

2. Double-click the SupportingFiles folder.

3. Double-click the Avid_MediaFiles folder.

4. Select the msmFMID.pmr and the msmMMOB.mdb files, and then press the Delete key.

5. Restart the Avid editing application.

Timeline

Limitation

➤ There is a short delay when you play a sequence in the Timeline with multiple (eight) audio tracks and one video track. The delay is less when you use fewer audio tracks.

Title Tool

Bug

➤ Re-editing a title might cause the Undo/Redo list to disappear.

Page 59: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Known Bugs and Limitations

59

Limitations

➤ Processing crawling titles in Real-Time (Green Dot) mode is not supported. Crawling titles will not appear in the Source/Record monitor while single-frame stepping or streaming. Crawling titles work as they always have in previous versions; they must be rendered before you can play them back in real time.

The following error will occur if you attempt to play a crawling title in Real-Time mode:

SWFXCONS_DIFFERENT_SAMPLE_CNTS.

Workaround: Disable Real-Time (Green Dot) mode in the Timeline. Crawling titles must be rendered in Legacy (Blue Dot) mode, and then the crawling title will play back in either Real-Time or Legacy modes.

➤ If a title in PAL is repositioned, the first line in the even field is black when you play back the sequence.

This is a limitation of the PAL DV format.

Workaround: When the first line in the even field is black, crop the line out in the Effect Editor.

Workgroups

When your NewsCutter XP is a client connected in a workgroup environment, you might initially think the following workgroup issues are caused by your NewsCutter XP. For additional workgroup issues, see the Avid Unity MediaNetwork, Avid Unity TransferManager, and Avid Unity MediaManager release notes.

Bugs

➤ If you have workspaces mounted on your system and the connection is lost to your workgroup, the workspaces are not dimmed to indicate they are no longer selectable in the Record tool.

Page 60: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

n You can still work locally on your NewsCutter XP system.

Workaround: Reestablish the workspace connection to the workgroup. If the connection cannot be reestablished, choose Eject from the File menu to unmount all workspaces.

➤ The Drive Selection menu in the Record tool might not display an accurate list of available workspaces if you have been unmounting and mounting different workspaces.

Workaround: Choose Mount All from the File menu before you open the Record tool.

n Make sure you do not have the Record tool open when you choose Mount All.

➤ You might receive the following error message while dragging media from Media Manager into your bin:Unimplemented operation file: coresw\ame\compman\ASequence.c line 963

Click Continue from error message. If you click abort, you might get a runtime error and lose all your unsaved work.

n You should be sure to do a final update after all chunking operations have completed to ensure that all such errors in sequence data have been corrected.

Workaround: After you click continue, perform a bin save and then restart the Avid editing application.

➤ If you perform a desktop checkin of a Photoshop file with layers, your Avid editing application will not import the file correctly. The system displays an Access Violation error.

Workaround: Copy the file onto a local drive or onto a Unity drive without checking it out through MediaManager.

Known Bugs and Limitations

61

➤ If you perform a Modify or AutoSync operation on a clip, the changes might not be reflected in MediaManager during an auto save, bin close, or manual save of the bin.

Workaround: Manually check the clip into MediaManager.

➤ OMF imports of QuickTime with alpha look and play online but they show up as offline in the Timeline. This is evident if you choose Offline Clip Color from the Timeline menu. There is not a problem with the media. Offline Clip Color is showing incorrect information in this case.

➤ If you perform a video mixdown to a workspace that is almost full, the Avid editing application might quit unexpectedly with a –36 error.

Workaround: Make sure you have enough space available before you create media on a workspace.

➤ Checking out an OMF file containing a pic sequence with alpha generates an unsupported resolution error.

Workaround: Quit the Avid editing application, restart the application, and create a new project. Checkout a valid version of the imported graphic into a bin then open the bin containing the original clip that had the problem. The clip should be online now.

➤ If you save a copy of a bin in a shared MediaNetwork project, it is not automatically checked into MediaManager. The new bin appears to have the correct information but if you save and close all bins and then reopen the copied bin it might be empty.

Workaround: Re-check the media into the second bin. This allows you to access the media but MediaManager is still reflecting incorrect information because the original bin is now tracking information in the second bin.

Page 62: NewsCutter XP Version 3.8 Release Notesresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/NCXP_RNv3_8_web.pdf · a Important Information Avid ® recommends that you read all the information in

Version 3.8 Release Notes

62

Limitations

➤ If the connection is lost when you have a MediaNetwork workspace mounted on your NewsCutter XP desktop, an error will occur. Depending on the function you are performing when the connection is lost, different error messages will appear. For example: if you are playing back video through a MediaNetwork workspace served from a PortServer Pro, and the PortServer Pro is shut down or the network connection is disconnected, the following type of error message might appear:

Assertion failed: curlen> 0 File: L:\coresw\core\filesys\diskrtnsWin.c, Line 327

n To check the status of the MediaNetwork workspace connection, look at the Connection Manager icon in the Windows taskbar. For indicator explanations, see the Avid PortServer Pro Client QuickStart Card.

Workaround: To deal with such an error:

1. Quit the NewsCutter XP application (using the Task Manager might be necessary).

2. Remount the MediaNetwork workspace after the PortServer Pro or MediaNetwork File Manager has been restarted, or after the network connection to the PortServer Pro has been restored. For details, see your MediaNetwork administrator and documentation.

3. Restart the NewsCutter XP application.

➤ Errors occur when attempting transfers of sequences that contain unsupported effects, audio formats, or media formats. This can occur when you have checked in a sequence from an editing system that supports these features, and then an editing system that does not support these features checks that sequence out and attempts to send the sequence to a playback device.
