Create Your Own Newscast Speech
For this project, you will be in a group of 4-5 people and create your ownnewscast. There are two main parts: the group newscast and the individualcommercial.
Group Newscast
Each member in your group should have a segment that is 2 minutes inlength. You should divide your newscast up so it covers the followingsections:
• Entertainment
• Local and World News
• Sports
• Weather
You should also decide together on how your newscast would look. Discuss thefollowing things with your group:
• What do newscasters wear? How professional should you look?
• What should your set look like? Every group should have a poster withtheir “call letters” (Example: 107.1 is “WPGU”. Combinations of yourfirst initials are a good idea.)
• How will you make sure your news is current? What planning will gointo choosing the topics for each section?
Individual Commercial
In addition, each member of your group is responsible for creating a 30second commercial for a brand new product you would sell to a teenager. For this, you will:
• Use the persuasive techniques we discussed to sell your product to ateenager
• Make a poster of your product to feature in your commercial
You may also bring in a model of your product, so long as you transform it insome way. For example, if you are marketing some new and amazinghairspray, don’t just bring in a bottle of hairspray. It should have a hand-madelabel or something to show that you created this product.
Total Length of Newscast

For a four person group, the total length should be between 10-11minutes. (2 minutes and 30 seconds per person PLUS an intro and outro)
For a five person group, the total length should be between 13-14minutes. (2 minutes and 30 seconds per person PLUS an intro and outro)
30 Second Commercial Expectations
Components in your commercial:
• Attention getter
• Ethos, logos, or pathos angle
• EITHER two logical fallacies OR one logical fallacy and an AristotelianSyllogism
• A visual aid (poster of your product OR an actual model of your product)
• Conclusion that ties back to your attention getter
Example of a commercial for hair spray:
Attention getter
Tired of hairspray that doesn’t hold? Tired of hairspray that makes your hair crunch?
Tired of doing your hair in the morning and it’s gone by lunch? Try Insta-stay!
Angle
Pathos (assuming the person feels tired)
Logical Fallacies
Bandwagon: It’s the new hairspray sensation! Everyone’s using Insta-stay!
Name Calling: Other hair spray can’t do what Insta-stay can!
OR
Aristotelian Syllogism
I use Insta-stay.My hair looks great.
If you use Insta-stay, your hair will look great.
Conclusion
Insta-stay is the best hairspray ever! Get your mornings back!

#1: _____________________________
#2: _____________________________
#3: _____________________________
