This remarkable combination of performance, low fuel consumption and low emissions is due in no small amount to the new SensoDrive gearbox fitted to the Citroen C3 1.6.

The New Citroën C3 Page 3

Technically it is known as sequential manual gearbox, or to put it another way it is manual gearbox with a normal clutch that is operated electronically, either at the command of the driver or at its own initiative, much in the same way as a conventional automatic selects the correct gear to match the requirements of the driver, along with the engine and road speeds.

The combination of the mechanics of a manual gearbox with the self shifting ability of an automatic pulls together the advantages of the two alternate systems. On one hand SensoDrive offers the advantages of manual gearbox: Performance, economy and emissions are not affected by a power sapping, fuel consuming, and emission producing torque converter that is required by a conventional automatic. At the same time it has the advantages of automatic: When the driver requires, at the press of a button, SensoDrive takes over all the gear changing responsibilities.

But it does not end there. SensoDrive adds a few additional advantages of its own. Because it is in total control of the engine, gears and clutch it ensures every gear change is perfect, no slipping of the clutch or mismatched engine and road speeds. This means not only is it harder to damage the drivetrain through poor driving technique, it also means that the ‘spike’ of emissions that goes through the system every time a conventional manual gearbox changes gears is eliminated. This is why the 1.6 litre SensoDrive C3 not only has the same 148 g/km CO² as the 1.4 engine, it is also significantly better than the 155 g/km CO² for the 1.6 C3 with a manual gearbox.

And then there is the ability to drive like Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae and Sebastian Loeb. Their Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance and aid driver concentration. Like the C3 SensoDrive, they can change gears without taking their hands off the steering wheel, using the same half moon shaped paddles mounted behind the wheel. This means they can concentrate on the rally stages and change gear as fast as is mechanically possible. Again, like the C3.

However, unlike the C3, they don’t have an automatic button. It’s not something that’s required when you are on your way to the remarkable 1-2-3 finish achieved by the Citroen team in the 2003 WRC Monte Carlo Rally.

The Citroen C3 SensoDrive not only gains a larger engine and a remarkable gearbox. The comprehensive package includes Climate Control AirCon with pollen filter, four airbags, ABS brakes with EBA and EBD, power windows and mirrors, remote central locking, front centre arm rests, six speaker equipped CD player, rain sensing wipers, automatic wipers, trip computer and front and rear fog lights.

The Citroen C3 SensoDrive tops the Australian C3 range, which opens at $19,990 for the Citroen C3 SX 1.4 manual, with a recommended retail price of $24,990.

“Citroen has built its reputation not just on advanced technology, but technology that in its application provides Citroen owners with a real advantage over other cars,” says Miles Williams, General Manager for Citroen in Australia. “The Citroen C3 SensoDrive is a fine example of this philosophy at work. It offers better performance, uses less fuel and is better for the environment. And it’s all wrapped up in the world’s most beautiful small car. Could there be a better combination?”

Citroen C3: A new level of success for Citroen in AustraliaSince its launch in Australia in December 2002, the Citroen C3 has exceeded Citroen expectations for it, with demand for the C3 consistently running ahead of supply as the French car maker which is renowned for small cars in around the world made its first fully official steps into this sector in Australia.

The Citroen C3’s success has been built on the design foundations that have made Citroen a byword for both style and technology. Citroen have produced a car that may be a small car in market position and road foot print, but which, thanks to its “tall car” and space utilisation, offers a big car interior that is

Page 5: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

light, large and airy with a driving position that produces an eyeline almost at the same height as a small 4WD.

The load space, for example, ranges from a spacious 305 litres with the rear seats in place, while with the rear seats folded, the space expands to a massive 1.3 Cubic metres. This is made possible by a new advanced rear suspension design that is both compact and, as would be expected of a Citroën, which offers superlative ride quality.

At the same time Citroen’s stylists, from the company that has produced such futuristic and timeless classics as the Traction Avant, the Citroen DS, the BX and the Citroen C5, have produced a small car that does not look like all the other two-box shapes that dominate the small car class.

The Citroen C3 is instantly recognisable, with its strong curves and shape contributing a style that is real standout, effortlessly stylish from every angle and a shape that is destined to become another classic Citroen. It is little wonder, therefore that it has been voted the World’s Most Beautiful Small Car by a team of the world’s leading designers, artists, critics and journalists, not to mention a raft of car of the year awards.

The inside is no less stylish than the exterior, with a design that is welcoming and easy to use, as well as dynamically interesting to live with on a day to day basis.

The Citroën C3 range for Australia opens at $19,990 for the Citroën C3 SX manual. Standard equipment includes remote central locking, front electric windows, variable assistance electric power steering, air-conditioning and cloth upholstery.

The Citroën C3 Exclusive manual at $21,490 adds ABS anti-lock brakes, front fog lights, front centre armrests and velour upholstery, while the automatic Citroën C3 Exclusive at $23,490 not only gains a sophisticated electronic

automatic gear box, it also gains 15 inch wheels, climate control air conditioning, rain sensing windscreen wipers, exterior temperature gauge and “Follow me home” headlights.

All versions of the Citroen C3 have one-touch electric front windows, electric power steering that has ultra-light operating for easy parking, Hi-Fi quality inbuilt audio system with CD player and six speakers, power mirrors, digital instrumentation with a dashboard mounted message screen, remote control central locking, chilled glove box, split folding rear seat, remote electric children’s door locks and height adjustable headlights.

The Citroën C3: The back-storyCitroën unveiled the Citroën C3 at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, following on from the C3 Lumière concept car presented at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, which illustrated the design options explored by Citroën for its new small car vehicle. With the new C3, Citroën has adopted a new approach to compact vehicle design.

A strikingly roomy vehicle featuring new tall car architecture, the Citroën C3 slots naturally into the range below the Citroën Xsara. The C3 is a further example of the renewed vitality of the Citroën range, illustrated in particular by the recent launches of the Xsara Picasso and the C5.

Designed by Citroën’s Styling Centre, the C3 has a strong and original personality conveyed through expressive styling. Its roomy architecture makes it light, spacious, friendly and accessible. The bright, pleasant interior may be optionally enhanced by an exceptionally large electrically controlled glass sunroof, which extends back over the rear seats.

The new architectural design is reflected in the external width (1.67 m) and height (1.52 m), which are exceptional for a vehicle of this length (3.85 m). These proportions make the C3 exceptionally roomy for a vehicle of compact design. A highly practical vehicle, the C3 optimises the interior volume

The new Citroën C3:GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Citroën C3 expresses an innovative approach to automotive design. Dynamic, fluid vehicle lines suggest a cheerful, open personality. The interior space and on-board comfort are visible at a glance. By combining innovative design lines with established references of quality, the C3 gains a strong personal appeal for its owners.

The Citroën C3 is a compact hatch with attractive styling and roomy architecture that makes it light, spacious, and accessible. The styling of the C3 suggests a strong personality that expresses the vehicle’s many qualities. A mere glance at the car gives an immediate impression of on-board well-being and interior space. The rounded forms and the large glazed area – of the windscreen in particular – draw attention to the interior space with its light, airy atmosphere. At the rear, the elegant vertical lights accentuate the tall lines of the C3, and draw attention to the available height.

Pure styling lines for visual appealThe strong personality of the C3 contributes to its appeal in the eyes of the onlooker. The car is based on a simple design featuring two arches running the length of the body. The rounded, flowing roofline creates a seamless continuity between front and rear, while drawing attention to the height of the vehicle.

The curving wings and specific design of the wheel arches at front and rear accentuate the wide track of the C3 and its excellent on-road stance.

The short overhang and the rounded enveloping forms of the roof, wings, windows, bonnet and doors draw attention to the vehicle’s compact design.A style that suggests strength, protection and safetyThe radiator grille, bumpers and – more generally – the compact curves of the C3 clearly express robust strength, protection and safety. The design of the lower body, which forms a continuous flowing line with the wheel arches, contributes to the perceived on-road stance, strength and road manners of the C3.

The C3 reveals different aspects of its multi-faceted personality, according to whether it is stationary or on the move.

When the car is stationary, it looks open and welcoming, with its strong curves and roomy architecture suggesting generous interior space.

When the car is on the move, it takes on a more forceful air, with a dynamic demeanour expressing a well-rounded character.

This dynamic character is accentuated by the design of the front end with its rounded bonnet (suggesting high performance engines), radiator grille and wide track. The harmonious whole created by the round forms of the roof, the bonnet and the wheel arches make the C3 look particularly dynamic from a ¾ front view. At the rear, the upwards thrust created by the elegant, angular lights appears to elongate the vehicle and to propel it forwards.

The Citroën C3

ROOMY AND FRIENDLYThe C3 is astonishingly roomy for a vehicle in its segment. And since the C3 has an external width of 1.67 m, passengers can take their ease. This generous interior space is also reflected by the interior dimensions. At the front, for example, the C3 boasts exceptional elbow room of 1.40 m.

The most significant progress made by the C3, however, lies in its height of 1.52 m – exceptional for a vehicle of this type – and in the innovative approach adopted to the interior architecture, which draws upon the experience acquired by Citroën in the design of its most recent vehicles.

This increased height created sufficient room to raise the driving position and make it more upright, while still leaving generous headroom. The height of the other seats has also been raised. This feature gives all the occupants of the C3 a clearer view of the road and is particularly reassuring for the driver. The eye level of the passengers is higher than the segment average, for improved visual comfort.

The higher seating position also creates an impression of peace and receptiveness to the outside world. The C3 is easy to get into and out of, thanks to the higher seats that offer a more natural seating position, and also the arch shape of the pillar and wide opening angle (68°) of the doors. The bright airy interior also expresses an openness to the outside world. The rounded form of the windscreen and the positioning of the pillar – placed further back than usual – ensure remarkable peripheral visibility.

To make the interior even brighter and to further increase passenger well–being, the C3 Panoramique features a large optional glass sunroof.

The glass sunroof expresses the shared contact between the occupants of the C3, or between the car and the outside environment. With this vast sunroof, the C3 gains a bigger glazed area than any other vehicle in the segment. It is made up of a mobile glass panel at the front and a fixed glass panel at the rear. The sunroof is designed to fit flush with the roof of the vehicle. In this way, it does not interrupt the flowing lines of the C3 or detract from its aerodynamic performance. Inside the vehicle, the space available to the occupants is virtually unchanged, thanks to the generous headroom available.

The sunroof is controlled by a one-touch electric button on the roof lining. To adjust interior brightness, the C3 is fitted with a sunblind. It is made up of a front curtain and a rear curtain, which retract into the central cross-member of the sunroof.

An invitation to share: A user-friendly living areaWith its bright passenger compartment, large glazed areas, on-board well-being and open approach to the outside world, the C3 encourages sharing, between the occupants of the vehicle or between the car and the outside environment.

The excellent acoustic comfort also plays a role in making verbal contact easier, notably between occupants at the front and rear.

The open, sharing values of the C3 are enhanced when the whole family is travelling together. Spacious, user-friendly, spirited and cheerful, the C3 is at the service of family well–being.

The raised seating and large glazed areas give children a better view of the road and scenery.

The New Citroën C3 Page 11

A refreshing sense of well-being: Comfortable, ergonomic seating The C3 features a wide range of functions that contribute to general well–being and so promote the fundamental values of openness and sharing.

The seats are designed to provide maximum comfort (side supports designed to the minimum necessary) and back support, while filtering out bumps in the road. The raised seating also improves postural comfort.

To make sure that everybody can travel in comfort, regardless of their size and shape, the steering wheel is adjustable for both height and reach, a feature that is still rare on this segment. Tall people can adjust the long front-seat runners (230 mm) to sit comfortably in the front. Central armrests are available for both the driver and passenger. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable. This function is also available for the passenger seat.

The two front headrests are height-adjustable. The shape of the head-rest, its horizontal and vertical curvature, cradle the occupant’s head to ensure maximum comfort. The headrests can be adjusted over the entire length of their stalks to adapt to all body shapes.

At the rear of the C3 Exclusive, three crescent-shaped headrests provide maximum safety and comfort for the occupants without blocking the driver’s rearview vision. The wide opening angle of the doors makes the C3 easy to get into and out of, particularly at the front. On–board controls are designed to be ergonomic. All on-board functions have been designed for maximum simplicity and ease of use. Information display units, such as the digital instrument cluster, are easy to read.

Thermal comfort and odour exclusion comfort for peace of mind and travelling pleasureThe interior temperature of a vehicle is one of the main criteria of comfort. The air conditioning systems fitted on the C3 are both efficient and quiet.

Two types of air conditioning are available: manual in the manual Citroën C3 and automatic in the Citroën C3 Automatic. This last system manages climate control automatically – air flow, air distribution, compressor start-up – in compliance with the temperature set by the occupants.

Automatic air conditioning also features an innovative day/night function that maximises thermal comfort by adjusting the mode of air circulation. To this end, the system analyses the level of daylight outside and checks whether the headlamps are on. These two items of information tell the system whether it is necessary to change the mode of air circulation to a “gentler” setting that focuses on the foot-level ducts and defrosting ducts, while maintaining a constant temperature. This type of air circulation is always appreciated when daylight is low, even at a constant external temperature. All versions of the C3 are fitted with a pollen filter.

Exceptional stowage spaceThe C3 combines record interior space with a wide range of stowage options. The many roomy and convenient stowage compartments also contribute to the pleasure of travelling in the C3. The two gloveboxes, one of which is fitted with a cooled compartment, have a capacity of 7 and 5 litres respectively. Each of the four doors is fitted with a large bin. The central console can hold three cans, or a number of everyday objects such as a mobile phone. The phone can be recharged on the 12 V socket. A cubby on the driver’s right can be used to hold gloves and keys, for example.

The Citroën C3

A CAR OF MANY TALENTSThe C3 aims to become the new reference in its segment for roadholding/ ride comfort balance and for the performance of its engines. The C3 sets high standards of on-board well-being and can thus lay claim to a versatility not usually found on B segment vehicles. The C3 is both a city runabout – by virtue of its compact dimensions – and a motorway tourer – by virtue of its overall performance.

Compact and easy-to-handle in the city

Compact external dimensionsThe external dimensions of the C3, and notably its overall length (3.85 m), place it squarely in the category of city runabouts designed to dart in and out of traffic and to take up minimal parking space.

New electric power steeringFor easy handling in the city, as well as on longer motorway journeys, the C3 features a new electric power steering system in which power varies continuously as a function of vehicle speed.

The objective is to satisfy distinct requirements in terms of easy steering: to reduce driver effort in low speed manoeuvres, and to “read” the road at cruise speed, directing the car with precision. The electric power steering satisfies this dual requirement. The laws applied by the system to reduce power in relation to speed are transparent to the driver. The transition between high assistance at low–speeds and moderate assistance at higher speeds is gradual and gentle.

In this way, whatever the driving conditions, the electric power steering system always places the focus on easy steering and safety.

Driving pleasure over long journeysThe Citroën C3 offers a level of driving pleasure that is worthy of a full-size tourer.

The 1.4i petrol engineDeveloping 57 kW (75 bhp DIN) at 5,500 rpm with torque of 118 Nm at 3,400 rpm, the 1.4i engine combines driving pleasure with consistent performance.

Fitted with the 1.4 litre 57 kW engine, the Citroën C3 can cover the dash to 100 kmh in 14.2 seconds in manual form and 17.7 seconds with the automatic gearbox option. Top speed is 168 and 162 kmh respectively; while the ECE combined fuel consumption figure is 6.2 l/100 km for the manual C3 and 7.1 for the automatic version.

The 1.6i petrol engineThe 1.6i 16V engine belongs to the latest generation of petrol engines. It brings the C3 a level of performance and driving pleasure not usually seen in vehicles of this type. It develops 83 kW EEC (110 bhp DIN) at 5,750 rpm with maximum torque of 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Efficient fuel management means that consumption levels are particularly low. This spirited engine is highly responsive from low speeds. Matched to the SensoDrive gearbox, it provides the

Page 14: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 14

Citroen C3 with a top speed of 192 kmh and the ability to dispatch the dash to 100 kmh in 12.9 seconds. It has an ECE urban fuel figure of 8.0 litres per 100 km – better than that for the manual 1.4 – and its Combined ECE figure is, at 6.2 l/100 km the same as the 1.4, as its C0² figure of 148 g/km, a remarkable combination for a car that is a nearly five seconds faster to 100 kmh.

C3 1.4: Comfort and peace of mind with sequentially controlled automatic transmissionThis type of automatic transmission system meets drivers’ needs by adapting to their individual driving styles, a function that brings significant benefits in terms of driving comfort and – in consequence – safety. The 1.4i engine features the AL4 auto-adaptive gearbox. This gearbox offers three operating programmes : a normal programme, managing six auto-adaptive shift patterns, a Sport programme, managing two auto-adaptive sports shift patterns, a Snow programme, which gives priority to grip.

This auto-adaptive gearbox features sequential gear-change control. With this function, the driver can select the gears manually, if he so wishes. In manual mode, the driver manages gear selection by pushing the gear lever forwards or backwards. In this way, he can adopt a sportier or more dynamic driving style.

This transmission combines the advantages of an automatic gearbox with those of a manual gearbox, leaving the driver free to switch from one to the other.

C3 SensoDrive 1.6: Performance, economy, low emissions and the ability to drive like McRae, Sainz and Loeb!Technically it is known as sequential manual gearbox, or to put it another way it is manual gearbox with a normal clutch that is operated electronically, either at the command of the driver or at its own initiative, much in the same way as a conventional automatic selects the correct gear to match the requirements of the driver, along with the engine and road speeds.

Because it is in total control of the engine, gears and clutch it ensures every gear change is perfect, no slipping of the clutch or miss-matched engine and road speeds.

Like the C3 SensoDrive, they can change gears without taking their hands off the steering wheel, using the same half moon shaped paddles

Page 15: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

mounted behind the wheel.

The choice of operation modes are:

• In manual mode, the SensoDrive maintains precision-control of the gear-speed engaged, so that the driver feels in full control of the vehicle.

• In automatic mode, it creates a sense of comfort that is both physical and psychological, bringing the driver complete peace of mind on the open road and in the city.

The driver switches easily and naturally from one operating mode to the other, either by using the automatic button control on the centre console or by using one of the two dedicated manual mode controls (paddles under the wheel or a gear lever) to quit automatic mode.

The technology of the SensoDrive gearbox brings improvements in many areas:

Comfort — in automatic mode, the driver does not have to change gears: a major advantage in heavy traffic. In manual mode, the driver no longer has to take a hand off the wheel to select the gear required.

Safety — Eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, the driver concentrates on the road ahead. A dashboard indicator shows the current gear-speed and mode of operation.

Fuel Consumption — Automatic mode optimises gear shift management to bring savings of 0.2 l/100 km in a standard combined cycle.

Emissions – SensoDrive ensures that every gear change is perfect with no emission spikes.

Durability – Every gear change is perfect, removing driver error such as slipping the clutch and mismatching he engine and road speed.

THE SENSODRIVE GEARBOX IN DAY-TO-DAY USEThe SensoDrive features two operating modes:• Manual mode,• Automatic mode.

In manual mode, the driver maintains full control over gear shifts. Gears are changed using one of the two control functions provided.

• Paddles located behind the wheel. The right-hand paddle is used to change up, the left-hand paddle to change down. These paddles give access to the five forward speeds.

Their position in relation to the wheel is fixed, so they can be used intuitively by the driver whatever the wheel position, for improved comfort and safety.

• A gear lever on the central console. This lever has a stable central position. The driver pushes it forwards (+) to change up, and pulls it back (-) to change down.

For reasons of safety, only the console lever can be used to put the car into neutral or reverse. The driver pushes the lever to the right to put the car into neutral. To put the car into reverse, the driver places a foot on the brake pedal, pushes the lever right andpulls it back.

Page 16: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 16

Even when manual mode is active, the SensoDrive gearbox enhances driving comfort. For example, the driver no longer has to change down on braking, when the car is approaching a stop sign or traffic lights. The gearbox changes down to first gear automatically then disengages the clutch when the car stops. When the driver puts a foot on the accelerator to move off again after a brief stop, the car starts up in first gear.

Moreover, in order to protect the power train, each request to change gears is analysed by a computer, which validates or overides the driver’s actions and can even select the appropriate gear in the event of over or under-revving.

Last, the gearbox control unit makes down-shifting a smooth and gentle process.

In automatic mode, the driver delegates the decision and the selection of gears to the control unit, which applies a number of gearshift patterns managed on an auto-adaptive basis.

The control unit analyses the driver’s behaviour, the type of route and the position of the accelerator in order to define the most appropriate gear. The control unit applies a number of rules in specific situations: maintain the current gear speed or change down to boost engine brake power; refuse change-ups on corners; change down to the lowest gear on kick-down for power acceleration.

In the same way, the gearbox detects low-grip conditions and adopts a “snow” type programme. This information is displayed on the instrument cluster.

An electric control function positioned on the central console behind the lever lets the driver switch to automatic mode. In this case, an “Auto” pictogram is displayed on the instrument cluster, together with the gear engaged. At the same time, an indicator lights up.

To ensure maximum safety, the SensoDrive gearbox includes a number of protective functions:

• The engine will only start if the brake pedal is pressed down.

• The driver can put the car into reverse only if his foot is on the brake and the car is stationary.

• If the car remains stationary over a long period with the engine on and a gear selected, the system returns automatically to neutral.

THE SENSODRIVE GEARBOX IN DETAILAn electronically controlled manual gearbox, the SensoDrive features electronically managed clutch and gear-shift functions. As a result, the car has no clutch pedal and the gear lever — which remains present — has no mechanical link with the gearbox.

The SensoDrive gearbox is managed by a control unit, which controls two actuators. One actuator changes gears while the other, which is equipped with a facing wear compensation system, engages and disengages the clutch. The gearbox control unit also dialogues with the engine control unit.

Linked to the C3’s multiplex electrics (CAN network), the gearbox control unit manages all the functions linked to the SensoDrive gearbox: start-up, automatic mode, safety functions, instrument cluster display. It diagnoses any operating failures and switches to failsafe or limp-home operation where necessary.

Page 17: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 17

This sophisticated electronic management system takes into account all the parameters necessary for efficient gear-changing: gear lever, accelerator, brake, engine and gearbox rpm, vehicle speed, ABS, engine torque and temperature.

In this way, when the gearbox control unit receives an order — in either operating mode — to change speeds, it briefly cuts off the engine’s powerflow, disengages the clutch, changes gears, engages the clutch and authorises power to be restored. These operations are sequenced as quickly as possible to minimise the break in acceleration.

For moving off, the gearbox control unit engages the clutch in accordance with the accelerator position and the engine speed. With this high-precision servo system, the driver remains in full control of the car in the most difficult situations (reverse parking, hillstarts) as well as on fast starts.

In automatic mode, gears are selected by the computer on the basis of the auto-adaptive shift patterns. The control unit analyses the driver’s behaviour and the type of route (rising, falling, corner) as well as the vehicle load and surface grip in order to define the most appropriate gear speed. The SensoDrive gearbox reaps the benefits of the experience acquired by Citroën with the auto-adaptive gearbox.

To avoid changing gears too frequently, gear shifts are conducted at different speeds during acceleration and deceleration.

A wide range of comfort equipmentThe C3 features a wide range of equipment to make sure that occupants stay comfortable and relaxed, no matter how long the journey.

With its high-quality finish, seat design, acoustic and thermal comfort, generous equipment and simplicity of use, the C3 satisfies – and even anticipates – the requirements expressed by the occupants. As a result, they enjoy a high level of on-board well-being and can complete long journeys without undue fatigue.

The sheer versatility of the C3 is illustrated by a wide range of functions including the height-adjustable front seats, height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, central locking, continuously variable electric power steering and front electric one-touch window lifts with an anti-pinch function, HF plip, air conditioning with pollen filter, adjustable electric rear view mirrors and a six speaker audio system, among other features.

A boot of impressive capacity

The C3 boasts a huge boot of a capacity that is exceptional on the light segment. This feature further identifies the C3 as a multi-purpose car. The boot has a capacity of around 305 litres. The dimensions are particularly attractive, with a load length of 0.66 m, a width between wheel arches of 1.04 m and an exceptional height of 0.59 m under the parcel shelf.

The rear seat features a 60/40 split-fold function, which increases boot capacity to remarkable levels, with more 1.3 cubic metres available with the rear seats removed.

For maximum convenience, the boot is equipped with two straps and four lashing rings.

The Citroën C3

TOP–LEVEL SAFETY FEATURES

Optimised expertise

Customers set great store by safety, and rightly so. Citroën’s approach to global safety involves taking all steps necessary to avoid accidents in any circumstances, notably by giving the driver a greater sense of responsibility. The objective is to give the driver all the information and assistance necessary to make the right decisions, while letting him concentrate on his driving. If, despite all precautions, an accident does occur, the occupants are well protected by a reinforced passenger compartment and a range of complementary appliances and equipment.

Continuing the policy adopted by Citroën on its most recent vehicles, and notably the C5, the C3 offers a particularly high level of safety. This is because the issue of safety was addressed as a whole, from on-board well being, which improves driver concentration, to impact resistance and the protection of the occupants through particularly surefooted roadholding. New technologies have been applied systematically in all these areas, in order to provide new services and functions that provide more information for the driver, while letting him concentrate on the road.

Particularly surefooted roadholdingParticular attention was given to the running gear, the objective being to make sure that the C3 would always be dependable, with firm, clear reactions.

The front suspension is of the MacPherson type with coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers. The rear suspension features a totally new design with a flexible transverse beam and hydraulic shock absorbers. This configuration offers the best trade-off between comfort and dynamic performance.

A high-performance braking systemThe C3’s braking system features discs at the front, drums at the rear and on the C3 Exclusive and 1.6 versions, rear discs and a 4-sensor ABS device and electronic brakeforce distribution for braking stability. Electronic brakeforce distributionThis function makes maximum use of braking power by delivering the maximum level of power admissible for each wheel. In this way, it optimises “front-rear” and “right-left” braking.Emergency braking assistanceAn emergency braking assistance system is also available: when the driver stamps hard on the brake pedal (indicating an emergency situation), the main piston sets off a second piston that raises the pressure of the braking system to maximum levels. This function considerably reduces the braking distance and also makes the driver less reticent about stamping hard on the pedal at the start of the braking process.

To further improve braking safety, the hazard warning lights of the C3 come on automatically in the event of sudden deceleration. They are switched off when the vehicle accelerates once more or when the driver activates the corresponding control button.

On-board well being to sharpen driver reactions

Page 19: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 19

On-board well-being involves a wide range of features and characteristics, for example, the remarkable on-board silence, the layout of the controls that fall naturally to hand, the seat design, the relaxing driving position (steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, headrests adjustable for height), the raised seating position with a clear view of the road and the large glazed areas for good peripheral vision. The objective is to leave the driver free to concentrate on his driving.

Advanced safety features

Multiplex electrics, similar to those of the C5The electric and electronic equipment supplied for reasons of comfort or safety is increasingly popular with customers, and may also be required by legislation in certain cases. To cope with the increased quantities of data circulating on-board the car, it was necessary to upgrade the electrical architecture and to adopt multiplexing.

Multiplexing involves linking the different electrical components using a limited number of harnesses. The BSI (built-in systems interface) and BSM (built-in supply module) make up the main components of the electrical data network. They process the data from the different networks and send it out to the item of equipment concerned.

The BSI and BSM are interfaced with different items of equipment on the car through multiplex networks that apply two communication protocols (VAN and CAN):

a VAN Comfort network (Vehicle Area Network for functions including the instrument cluster, navigation, car radio and air conditioning),

a VAN Body network (for functions including the airbags and upper part of the steering column),

a CAN network (Controller Area Network for such functions as engine control, electric power steering and headlamps).

Equipment that allows the driver to give the road his full attentionThe possibilities offered by multiplexing and the BSI have provided the basis for a wide range of functions designed to bring customers enhanced levels of comfort, driving pleasure and safety. These functions leave the driver free to give the road his full attention and so give him a greater sense of responsibility. The car provides the driver with all the information necessary for decision-making without actually acting for him.

See and be seenThe intermittent windscreen wiper function is indexed to vehicle speed for improved visibility. On the versions featuring air conditioning with automatic temperature control, the windscreen wipers are rain sensitive. With their complex-surface design and clear lens, the main headlamps of the C3 throw off considerable light. H1 lamps are used for the high-beam function and an H7 lamp for the dipped-beam function. The fog lamps (H1) are built into the skirt of the front bumper on Exclusive versions. The hazard warning lights come on automatically in the event of sudden deceleration.

The black panelThe black panel function improves visual comfort at night by switching off all the data on the instrument cluster (except the speedometer) and the remote display units.

An intelligent locking systemThe C3 features a two-button plip control system: one button for locking and locating the car, the other for unlocking. If the vehicle is unlocked using the plip control but neither the doors

Page 20: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 20

or boot are opened within 30 seconds, the vehicle locks again automatically. This function protects the vehicle if the driver unlocks it accidentally.

As soon as the vehicle starts to move, the car and the boot locks automatically and is thereby protected against theft. It will remain locked until a door is opened or until the car comes to a stop.

When the engine is turned off, the electric window lift controls remain active for 30 seconds after the driver’s door has been opened.

The one-touch electric control used to raise and lower windows features an anti-pinch function. These characteristics are shared by the sunroof, which can also be programmed in any one of nine possible slide positions.

The C3 also offers many other intelligent functions designed to promote the comfort and safety of the occupants. Examples include interior lighting controls, a function that adjusts the volume of the car radio in accordance with vehicle speed, windscreen wipers timed to operate after the windscreen wash function, windscreen wiper rate adjusted when the car is stationary, automatic cut-off of energy-consuming functions such as the audio system and lighting, 30 seconds after the engine is switched off, and an excess speed warning.

Innovative equipment for child safety

Child safety locks on rear doors controlled by an electric function on the dashboardFor safer, more relaxed travelling, the status of the child safety locks is shown by an indicator on the dashboard, and feature an electric control on the dashboard, illuminated at night, which activates or deactivates the child safety locks.

More protection systems of enhanced efficiency

High standards of impact resistance and occupant protectionThe C3 was designed using an entirely new platform. This made it possible to reach even higher levels of safety and to satisfy the most stringent impact tests, in particular those of EuroNcap. High-yield strength steel makes up 41% of the structure of the C3. This reduces vehicle weight while maintaining a high level of stiffness.

To enable the structure to crumple in the event of impact, high-yield strength steel is not used for the entire vehicle.

A “body block” system is fitted on the steering column. With this type of system, the column retracts by 50 mm in the event of impact, thus minimising the impact of the driver’s chest on the steering wheel and significantly reducing the injuries that could be caused on impact.

The Citroën C3 is fitted with four airbags (front and side) to protect the driver and front passenger. The fuel supply is cut off if any one of the airbags is deployed.

The seatbelts at the front are height adjustable. They are equipped with pyrotechnic pretensioners with force limiters, in order to reduce the pressure on the chest in the event of impact, and so further enhance the level of protection.

The three rear seatbelts are three-point. The central belt at the rear is installed on the seat itself. As a result, it is easier to use and to position in all cases, including for child seats. This configuration is also more attractive on the eye, since the belt is not attached to the rear roof cross member.

Page 21: NEWS RELEASEmedia.ateco.com.au/files/media/documents/357aCitroen.doc · Web viewTheir Citroen Xsara WRC is also fitted with a sequential manual gearbox which to maximise performance

The New Citroën C3 Page 21

Moreover, the C3 seeks to reduce the consequences of impact with a pedestrian: a particular effort was made to design a non-aggressive front end.

The structure is designed to offer an effective response to the problem of dissipating a maximum amount of energy over a minimal area while ensuring that repair costs are not too high in the event of an accident of average severity.

Vehicle protectionThe C3 is well protected against theft and break-ins. The barrage of protection devices installed on the C3 include the new-generation coded engine immobiliser, already used on the C5, central locking of the doors and tailgate, an HF remote control unit and transponder, a function that automatically relocks the vehicle if it is unlocked accidentally, and a function that locks the car and boot automatically as soon as the car starts to move.
