Rabbi Anthony Fratello
During our recent Meditation Walk, I brought for the
participants copies of the Personal Prayer of Mar, son
of Ravina. Most of you will not recognize that name,
or know what this is, but each of you has heard the
words before. “May the words of my mouth and the
meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, O God,
my rock and my redeemer.” Those words, which
Cantor frequently chants at the end of our Silent
Meditation, are from the Personal Prayer of Mar, son
of Ravina.
It turns out that there are many similar prayers, all of
which can be found in the Talmud. Why Mar’s was
chosen over any other I cannot say, perhaps because
it speaks to us of many things. Our commitments to
God as well as God’s promise to us. The needs we
have to fulfill what we are commanded to do, and the
desire that others should treat us fairly and equitably.
The prayer begins by asking that our “Tongue be
kept from evil and our lips from deceitful speech,”
and it ends with a supplication for peace.
I chose these texts to study because it fascinated me
that the sages of old composed words that they would
use over and over again—every time that they ended
their prayer. "How quaint,” I thought. I wonder why
we do not do the same thing today. And then it hit
me; we do. Maybe we aren’t as formal as the sages
of old, taking time to write out long hand what we
might say to God, but surely we use similar words,
thoughts, and ideas when we pray. And here I am
not talking about what is written in the prayer book. I
am talking about what pours out of our souls when
we are in need, in doubt, when our hearts are filled
with sadness or with joy. In thinking about my own
prayer I can tell you that there are certain things I say
to God all the time. Most of my words are similar to
yours, and then again, some of them are surely
unique to me.
Prayer is for us, or should be, an active process. We
are supposed to practice and be engaged in our
prayer. We are supposed to think about the words
we are saying and what they mean. Admittedly, this
is a lofty goal, sometimes we can realize it, and
sometimes we cannot.
I will give to you the exercise I gave to the group on
our last walk. Take some time, pause, and think:
what is YOUR Personal Prayer? What words do you
say to God? What needs, longings, desires do you
express? And, having asked that, now pause and ask
yourself, "What you are doing to make them real?"

Living in Palm Beach County, we are very fortunate
to part of a vibrant Jewish Community. As the
education director, I participate in the Educator’s
Council at the Friedman Commission of Jewish
Education. This affords me the opportunity to meet
with the other Directors of the various synagogue
schools throughout the county. We study together,
share best practices, and sometimes collaborate on
educational opportunities, so that we can offer
exciting programs.
This year, our 6th graders are fortunate to be the
beneficiaries of this collaboration. They are
participating in a program called, We See Palm
Beach: Gazing Through Our Lens. Yaara Levy, our
new Israeli emissary at the Federation of Palm Beach,
is spearheading this program. It is modeled after Hu-
mans of Tel Aviv, a project by Israeli photojournalist
Erez Kaganovitz that illustrates the cultural diversity
of Tel Aviv through images of different people. We
are especially excited because this exhibit is coming
to our community this year, and Mr. Kaganovitz will
also be visiting with us in February.
The goal of this project is for the 6th graders to
explore their own identities and then to create a
similar exhibit. They are working with the 6th graders
from B'Yachad, the Community Religious School for
Temple Torat Emet and Temple Beth Tikvah. This
project is being done simultaneously by 6th graders
throughout the county and will culminate in an
exhibit for family and friends sometime in the spring.
During January, we will celebrate the holiday of Tu
B’Shevat - which is often referred to as the birthday
of Trees. Although most of the USA will be in the
middle of winter, in Israel you can see the Almond
Trees, the earliest bloomers, begin to flower.
Learning about Tu B’shevat is a wonderful way for
our students to learn about the land of Israel. Some of
our students, the 5th grade and the Tichon/HS class,
are also involved in twinning projects with students
from our partnership region, Tzahar, located in the
north of Israel. Throughout the year, they exchange
letters and work together remotely on projects. This
allows them to develop personal relationships with
Israelis and helps to broaden their understanding of
Israel.
We will return to Religious School on Sunday,
January 6th after the winter break. Our 6th graders
will be heading to the Loxahatchee Nature Reserve
for the B’nai Mitzvah Retreat. Please join us on
Friday, January 11, when the Fourth Grade will lead
in is the Intergenerational Shabbat Worship. Remind-
er to 7th graders that we have a trip to the Holocaust
Memorial on Sunday, 1/27/19.
Wishing you all a Wonderful 2019!

My project was with Operation Gratitude. Operation
Gratitude sends care packages to Veterans, First
Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care
Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members
deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. I
was able to write letters to soldiers and veterans thanking
them for their services and sacrifices. I also have
additional care packages planned to send with requested
necessities. Being a part of this made me feel good and
helpful. I feel that it is important to share our
appreciation for all that they do and have done to keep us
safe.

Contact the office for details 561-364-9054 What is the Legacy Society?
Members and Non-members who have planned to leave a Legacy Gift to Temple Shaarei Shalom in the future through a will,
trust, life insurance policy, 401(k)/IRA beneficiary or other form of donation.
How do I become a Legacy Society Member?
Complete the Letter of Intent Form that indicates that you wish to provide a Legacy Gift to Temple Shaarei Shalom. The form
is on our website or pick it up from the office. You do not have to indicate what type of gift or how much you wish to leave to
Temple Shaarei Shalom. This is completely revocable at anytime.
Who decides where the money goes and how it’s spent?
All Legacy donations are invested in Temple Shaarei Shalom’s Endowment account. As the donor you can choose to earmark
the money for a specific fund, however, we have an endowment committee that works with a Financial Planner to invest all
endowment monies per our Temple Constitution. The earnings from the endowment are disbursed per our Constitution.
What if I already named the temple in a future gift?
Then you are already a Member of The Legacy Society, just call the office and let us know so we can recognize and thank you.

We know that for Judaism to be whole, to be holy, it requires each of its pillars: Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim (loving
kindness). But what exactly is Avodah?
Avodah is the Hebrew word for work AND it is the same word that is used for prayer. To me, Avodah connotes service (It is also
the word for slavery, which is involuntary service). Work is not only a necessary part of life, it is a form of service to the world, to
the rest of humanity, and to God. So often we think of worship as something we do on Friday nights or Saturday morning, and work
as something we do during the weekdays. This dichotomy does not have to exist if we keep in mind that both work and worship
have the same foundation, the same root. In fact, the various usages of this Hebrew word found first in Genesis 2:15 tell us that
God’s original plan was that our work and our worship would be a seamless way of living. In other words, Avodah suggests that
our work can be a form of worship where we honor God and serve others.
Throughout history, wise men and women agree that the purpose of life is to serve others. Martin Luther King, Jr. once declared,
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?” Mahatma Gandhi opined, “The best way to find
yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.” Rabbi Tar'fon (first century), when discussing the world’s problems, commented,
“The work is not upon you to complete, but neither are you exempt from trying.”
Serving people through community service shows others that there is someone who does care for them and has respect for their
needs without any selfishness. This can empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, and create solutions to
social problems. But, volunteering isn't always fun -- there is usually time, energy and even money involved -- but it is always
meaningful and gratifying.
What will you do in 2019 to serve others? How will you integrate work and worship into a meaningful blend? Perhaps you will
register to volunteer at one of the many service opportunities throughout the community on January 21 for MLK Day of Service;
Maybe you will join the TSS team on January 26 at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure; Possibly you will mentor a child or visit
the infirmed. Need some more ideas? Contact me, Holly Bromer at [email protected].
