You may have heard the saying:
If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know that it didn’t get there by itself
The obvious point is that if you think that you have gotten to where you are in life all by yourself, you are clearly not taking the time to remember all of the people who have invested their time in you.
From the time you are born, there are people shaping your life: parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers, religious leaders, coaches, friends, events…even strangers. You might say it has taken a whole “village” of people to help create the person you are today.
We ended our fiscal year in June very well. Our Client Care Index averaged 95.5%, which is the highest ever. It directly reflects the wonderful care that we give our residents, community-clients and students to fulfill our mission (our promise) to make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities. No one person made that happen. It was a team effort!
In addition to our improved Client Care Index WE: • Received a perfect CARF recertification • Have decreased our turnover of new direct care staff by over 35% • Gave 5% raises to all staff who meet standards • Increased our dollar-for-dollar pension match from 4% to 5% • Did not pass the increased costs in our health insurance to the staff
Clearly, in all these areas the turtle did not get there all by itself.
We are going to have challenges this year, as always. We continue to have a $10,000 annual gap for every resident we serve between what it costs to bring this quality of care and the reimbursement rate we receive from the State of Illinois. This means we have to raise almost $2 million every year!
Besides the budget and fundraising challenges…the new Marklund Day School - Geneva is under construction and will open in June next year, and we are looking at the possibility of expanding into group homes.
Thank you for being the kind of team that thrives on challenges. None of us can reach these challenges all by ourselves but together amazing things are possible…even turtles on a fence post!
God bless you!
Gil
