Principal’s Message
Year 10 Retreats
This week we have conducted our Year 10 Retreats at the new Francis Retreat, Bonny Hills and at Valla Beach Tourist Park. I would like to thank Mr Michael Walsh and Mrs Helen Gilbert for the extensive organisation that went into these Retreats. Thank you also to our College Chaplain Fr Roland for visiting students at the retreat venues, who will also be celebrating Mass with students and staff at the top of North Brother Mountain.
A big “Thankyou” also to all staff who attended the Retreats and facilitated or supervised. We are indeed lucky to have staff who so willingly give of their time and take themselves away from their own family obligations to work with our students and give them these valuable experiences.
Of course, Retreats can only be successful if the students themselves enter into them with a sense of cooperation and openness to new and sometimes challenging, ideas. Thank you to all our Year 10 students who attended the Retreats and made it possible for them to be a worthwhile opportunity to explore their spirituality. "I like Old-School Fridays because......"

exceptional Librarian, Mrs Karen Bale. For a
brief moment in time we have the opportunity to
engage with one another without the use of
technology in our lives.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Year 8-12 Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held over two nights, both from4.00pm – 7.30pm on:
Monday, 7th
March surnames A – K – (CLOSED)
Monday, 21st March for surnames L – Z – (BOOKINGS ARE OPEN until 10.00am on Monday 21st March)
Whilst we encourage families to book on the correct night, if you are unavailable on your set date please book on the alternate date All parents are encouraged to attend these interviews as they are a critical contributor to your child’s success and happiness at school. The evening provides the opportunity to meet with your child’s Pastoral Care (PC) Teacher as well as all subject teachers. It will also give you the opportunity to give teachers a brief insight into your child and their learning. Teachers will use the opportunity to let you know how your child has settled in to the 2016 school year and show you ways your child will be learning in their classroom, including how you can check their work and assist with homework and assignments. In order to book your interviews (5 minutes per teacher) please go to the College websitewww.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au and click on the Parent-Teacher interviews link. You will need to have a copy of your child’s timetable (in their diary) with subjects and teachers names for each subject. Enter the School Event Code from the box below and then follow steps 1, 2 and 3. Please BE CAREFUL to book interviews for the correct date according to your surname. Starting Week 9 Term 1, parents of Year 7 – 12 students will receive a text message if their child is
absent without approved leave.
Parents of students who have been marked absent, and who have not previously advised the College of
their child’s absence, will receive an SMS by approximately 10.00am.
Parents are encouraged to respond to this SMS by 3.00pm on the same day. Your response will then be
recorded as your child’s absent explanation. There is no need to send in an additional note. If you have
any concerns in regards to receiving this text, I urge you to contact Lisa Bulley or myself in our College
office.

Congratulations Hastings House for your wonderful fundraising efforts for Project Compassion. A
special thanks goes to the senior students of Hastings for all their hard work and preparation in the
selling of lolly bags and soft drinks. Their combined efforts raised over $1000 which will be greatly
appreciated by Caritas and the young people all over the world who are certainly less fortunate then we
are.

One Sentence Story Competition
Four weeks ago students were challenged to enter the College’s “One Sentence Story” Competition.
This competition gave students a chance to show their writing skills in short form. The Idea being:
students’ enter one well written sentence that conveys emotion, intrigue, humour or simply an idea.
Our students really stepped up to the challenge wonderfully and we received over 350 entries. These
entries included the haunting, the hilarious, the sad, the eyebrow raising and the bizarre.
The placegetters in each year group are set out below:
Year 7
First Place: Bridget Williams - She realised she couldn't convince her closest friends, let alone twelve
hundred students at her school assembly, that the nervous escape of air, in the middle of reading the
prayer, was NOT a burp!
Second Place: Jamie Stephens - I text you every night, waiting for a reply that I know will never come.
Third place: Alicia Holliday - The morning I opened the door, everything had changed.
Year 8
First Place: Eve Slater - The cackling chainsaw sounds through the wood, it stops suddenly as it sneers
at the next spray painted X.
Second Place: Matthew Burke - The valley was a luscious green with rolling hills and snaking rivers,
but none of that would survive what's to come.
Third Place: Ebony Williams - This was it, my one chance at glory; if I scored this goal my team would
finally win the grand final.....then my Xbox 360 died.
Year 9
First Place: Faith Sparrow - She bent down, and looked into the box, seeing nothing but the old photo
book.
Second Place: Trai Blair - The young boy stared into the lonely pit of despair that were his mothers’
eyes, then she broke the news to him.
Third Place: Jenna Doyle - It was silent in the room: then suddenly a flow of tears... she'd stopped
breathing.
Year 10
First Place: Rilee Parry - "It's okay to close your eyes, you never saw me anyway." She said, letting the
tears flow down her face and onto the hospital bed.
Second Place: Yanna Aguire - And there she was, staring off into the distance at the boy she once
knew, remembering how quickly friends who used to talk every day and every night into strangers who
just walk past each other as if everything meant nothing.
Third Place: Jenna Stephenson - As I sat there waiting for the inevitable bad news, for everything to go
wrong, I watched the fish swim in circles as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

Year 11
First Place: Matt Cramp - The enigmatic email arrived in my inbox, un-expected and un-warranted yet
strangely inviting, daring me to click “open”…
Second Place: Chloe Litchens - I look up at what was once the clear blue skies and see nothing but
dark, thick polluted air blanketing the earth.... What have we done?
Third Place: Courtney Newell - For the briefest of moments she removed her hoodie from her face and
stared up at her image, suspended on the unforgiving metal, tainted by weather, and she mouthed the
words printed above her face; MISSING.
Year 12
First Place: Connor Rixon - She waves wistfully, knowing what we did not care to see.
Second Place: Eric Hammer - As the knife passed through her lung, she managed to whisper to her
killer, "thankyou".
Third Place: Matthew Lee - She continued to eat popcorn, her enemies continued to crawl from the fire.
Teachers
First Place: Penny McKee - The one sentence story started life as it was meant to: a seed that grew
into a novel from which rights were sold for the film which would later go viral on all social media
platforms as t-shirts bearing its name were uploaded to You Tube en masse by entire cities; and after
which young mums named their newborns, presidents of great countries endowed it with the keys to their
cities and declared public holidays in its name, and famous artists tried to capture its spirit in words, paint
and song while school children all over the world learnt of its history and wrote captivating PEEL
paragraphs about it; it made guest appearances on reality TV shows and once even danced with
Beyonce at The Superbowl; but a seed can either grow or get very tired, as this little seed did; and it
was after all only an overworked semi colon hooked up to a comma, both of which no one really cared
about; much.
Second Place: Anne Marchment - I placed my bag on the empty seat and allowed myself a surreptitious glance at the others - chatting, milling, laughing....my loathing only just tempered by the envy I knew would follow me today.
Third Place: Laura Gilbert - A girl's worst nightmare: sold out.

This week began on a high note for the Mathematics faculty with the celebration of International Pi Day.
The maths teachers dressed the part wearing their maths t-shirts, and all students were given the
opportunity to participate in a “Guess the Pi word” competition. Mr Redfern placed nine different words
around the school with a bonus card emerging at recess. Groups from almost every year group had lots
of fun running around the school.

Europe Tour
Thank you to all parents, grand parents and students who came to the Information Session last week, we had a wonderful show of interest in the tour. Given the interest shown, we are requesting that Registration Forms be returned to your respective campuses as soon as possible. Once your forms are submitted your position on the tour is guaranteed. Spaces may need to be limited. Deposits will not be required until the first week of Term 2.
We have recently had a clean-up of our uniform items and would now appreciated any
donations of good quality, clean uniform items.
Donations may be dropped off to the College office.
The uniform shop is open on Thursday from 2.25pm to 3.30pm

Creative Arts News
Year 9 Artist’s take the Archibald Prize by Storm – Vote Now!
Don’t we all know that feeling of defeat that so often follows the completion of a scribbled smiley face,
penned eyes, mouth, head all crooked? Well it’s this that makes us in the Creative Arts department all
the more proud of the portraits our Year 9 artists have triumphed in producing, especially with only
weeks studying portraiture.
For this reason some lucky, and skilled, students will be receiving prizes in our very own Archibald Prize,
Packer Prize as well as a People’s choice award all students are invited to vote in. Good work Year 9.
Year 7 & 8 Visual Art
In Years 7 and 8 Visual Art classes this term we have been practising
our writing skills and learning Art– specific terminology that the students
have then utilized in small common formative tasks. The first paragraph
they attempted was written about a Brett Whiteley artwork and his use of
line in the work. The following outstanding response was written by
Ebony Darcy in Year 7.
This artwork was created in 1974 by a unique and gifted artist by the
name of Brett Whiteley. The artwork is a sild screen print on paper, titles ‘The Divided Unity’
It is fundamentally a mix of organic, swirling and aggressive lines, creating the effect of wild waves. The
divided unity is an expressive masterpiece, demonstrating spontaneous direction and some dominant
channels. Although the work is flowing some lines are broken which creates a delicate and partially
sensitive outcome. The artwork is monochromatic, meaning one base colour was used during the
process. The piece shows evidence that the elements of art were used, which was a substantial
contributing factor to the spectacular contributing factor to the spectacular result.

Exciting times ahead for the Library: Next week we will be visited by author Trinity Doyle. Trinity is a Newcastle-based Young Adult author who won recent acclaim for her book “Pieces of Sky”. As a Stella Prize Schools Program Ambassador, she will be presenting a writing workshop to Advanced English classes in Years 11 and 12. She will also be attending MacKillop College in her capacity as Stella Prize Schools’ Program Ambassador, and there will be a function at Port Macquarie – Hastings Library Service as well. On the afternoon of Tuesday March 22
nd, Trinity will be in attendance at
the Grant Street premises of the Port Macquarie Hastings Library Service between 4.30-6.30pm for a Meet and Greet, and a Writing Workshop. If you would like to attend, please phone your RSVP to 6581 8755.
Humans of SJRC Library Some of you may know of the “Humans of New York” project… it has received much acclaim for its visual and textual portrayal of real people with real lives. St Joseph’s Regional College Library has its own project for 2016 – “Humans of SJRC Library”. The insights that its subjects give are book and library-related, rather than life-story.

St Patrick’s Day
This week, we honoured some Irish literature in celebration
of St Patrick’s Day. Renowned Irish authors such as Maeve
Binchy, Edna O’Brien and Paddy Doyle were recognised,
along with drama by Brendan Behan, Irish poetry
anthologies and books about historic Irish castles.
NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge
This has now opened for 2016, and students are encouraged to register for
the program.

Friday in the Library
Last week, Mr Dempsey paid a visit to the Library during “Old
School Friday” . He engaged in games of Scrabble and Chess,
cast his vote in the “Archibald Prize” Art Competition, and

Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. St Joseph’s Regional College Alumni
This week, our Alumni Report is of Eliza-Jane Priddis, Class of 2011.
I completed my studies at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2011.
During my time at SJRC I was extremely lucky to make amazing memories and build relationships that helped mould me into the person that I am today. When I started at SJRC, the campus was located near Settlement City. I feel extremely fortunate to have made the memories that I did at both campuses - old and new.
Upon leaving school I moved straight to Sydney to begin study. Shortly after my transition from school to University I realised that I wasn’t really interested in studying at that point in time.
With much ‘head noise’ about what to do from here, I jumped straight into the Hospitality industry in a full-time job at a busy up-market restaurant on the harbour in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Here I gained strong knowledge about the Hospitality industry, built great relationships and enhanced my communication skills. It was in this job that I realised I preferred a more “hands on” career path with a face-to-face learning approach.
After a few years of working, travelling and enjoying Sydney’s nightlife I decided I wanted to re-commence my academic studies. I started and completed a Diploma of Event Management, giving me the credentials to gain employment with the National Australia Bank in its Event team. In this role I gained valuable insight into the corporate world, working closely with executives and personal assistants in preparation for Corporate functions.
I was shocked at how much I loved what I was doing and this rubbed off on those around me.
After only 8 months in this role I was lucky enough to move on to a new role as a Team Assistant and Training Coordinator to an executive team within NAB Wealth. I am currently still working in this role and loving every minute of it. My decision to take a break after school and not go onto University was the best decision I have ever made. So after a lot of patience and experience in the workforce I finally feel like I am beginning to shape a solid career path for myself. Eliza-Jane

SJRC was represented by five teams at the Hasting’s 9s Rugby League Gala Day last Thursday at
Tuffin’s Lane. Results as follows:
13As – Won the final 5 Nil
13Bs – undefeated all day
14s – Lost the final 3 – 2
15s – Won the final 6 – 1
16s – Drew the final 1 – 1
Congratulations to all participants. From all reports they represented the college with pride and displayed
excellent sportsmanship and behaviour all day.

Diocesan Winter Sport Trials - Postponed
The Diocesan Winter Sport Trials for Football and Rugby League have been postponed due to the state
of the grounds at Woodlawn College. They received between three and four inches of rain overnight.
The trials will now be held on the backup date – the 23rd of March. Our excursion will run as per
program except the date. The bus will now leave on Tuesday the 22nd of March and return after the
completion of the trials on Wednesday the 23rd of March.
Lismore Diocesan Swimming Carnival
Last week the SJRC Swimming Squad travelled to Kempsey to compete in the Lismore Diocesan
Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to all students on your efforts. In particular to Nathaniel Bentley,
Phoebe Bentley, Eric Hammer and Hugh Stewart who qualified for the Diocesan Team to compete at
Homebush on the 29th March.
There were a number of school records broken or set on the day – Nathaniel Bentley (x4), Eric Hammer
(x3), Claire McIntosh (x5) and Hugh Stewart who broke the 18 year old 400m freestyle record. We had
one age champion on the day – awesome effort Nathaniel Bentley.

SJRC Results Age Champions Multi Class Champions Full Results
NSW All Schools Triathlon
Congratulations to Isacc Sanderson who finished third overall in the intermediate boys division of the
NSW All Schools Triathlon held at Penrith Lakes in week six. Not only did he finish third overall, he also
placed first in the Catholic Schools Division.
Isacc has now qualified for the NSW All Schools team to compete in the School Sport Australia event to
be held at Harvey Bay Queensland in late April.

Dreaming on the Edge Retreat: 16th–18th March 2016 Dreaming on the Edge Retreat is an
Aboriginal community event being held at Candlebark Farm Healesville, which will focus on mental,

Port Macquarie Triathlon Club The Camden Haven junior races due to go ahead this weekend at
Pilot Beach Dunbogan have been cancelled due to lack of numbers. Sunday senior race will run as
advertised
North Haven Boardriders Club, O’Rafferty Rules Surfing Competition - The O’Rafferty Rules
Surfing Competition, which is held every two years is to encourage and promote surfing at Junior level
in the Greater Camden Haven/Port Macquarie Region, as well as a good mix of NSW and interstate
competitors participating. Darren O’Rafferty, one of Camden Haven’s finest ambassadors of surfing on
the world stage, has once again lent his name to the event and will be on hand to encourage and cheer
on the locals. Great prizes are on offer for everybody as well as a Surfboard Draw at the Presentation
(entry form is attached and is available at all Surf shops).

competitor gets a competitor’s bag, packed full of surfing gear to the value of $50.00, and goes in the
draw to win a surfboard for their division. We have a surfboard to giveaway for every division!
Hastings Valley Vikings Rugby Union Club- 2016 is again shaping up
to be another great year for the Hastings Valley Vikings Rugby Union
Club. We have for the past 2 seasons won both the Reserve grade and
First grade premierships. We are also currently the Mid North Coast
Rugby Union Club Champions. So if you want to join the premier club on the coast and play Rugby
Union come along and give it a go. Training is currently held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at
5.00pm. It is held at the Vikings home ground Oxley Oval.

Youth Week 2016 - Every year, hundreds of young people aged between 10 -25 from across the Port
Macquarie-Hastings get involved in Youth Week activities. This year, The Youth Advisory Council
(YAC) partnering with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council have a bumper week of activities planned.
Enclosed is the 2016 Youth Week Poster for display on your notice boards and in your school newslet-
ters.
