LPA Accredited now the way to trade The March deadline for moving from “Provisional” to “Accredited” with Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) has now passed.

Those that have moved to Accredited can still use the provisional NVD forms if they have some remaining however it is advisable to check with your selling agent or your buyer as to which form is preferred.

All those producers that have not moved to accredited now show as “Not Accredited” on the LPA database and are not able to use provisional NVDs to sell stock.

You are still able to become Accredited in LPA even if you missed the 1 March 2008 date.

To do this call 1800 683 111 and choose option 2 or log on to the website www.mla.com.au/lqs and use the link on the right hand side of the page “Manage your LPA Profile” . If you do not know your LPA number and/or Password to log on you can email: [email protected]

Goat registrations on the LPA database have continued to grow reflecting the growth of the Australian goat industry. The table below indicates where the 7,505 goat Property Identification Codes (PICs) are on a state by state basis.

Note from Ian Cathles Please take note of the above release from Meat and Livestock Australia and be sure to obtain new NVD’s for use when selling animals in the future. Also remember that all livestock sale transactions attract a statutory levy of 37.7 cents per head which should be submitted to the Levy Revenue Service annually by vendors in October. I.e. the transaction levy for the current sale season will be due end of June this year.

Boorowa Field Day—Wed 27th Feb

Having left East Gippsland the South African visitors, Blake Hobson, Andries and Elzane Oelofse travelled to Wee Jasper and stayed with Ian and Helen Cathles at “Coorabigbee Homestead”. That evening they met with Henry King, creator of “Thermoskin”. Thermoskin is a liquid that is sprayed on to all shorn animals as a coat, to assist in the prevention of hypothermia and is based on lanolin. The South Africans are interested in conducting trials and tests on their animals in South Africa. The next day saw them at the field day at Roger and Megan Clark’s Boorowa property where, following a shearing demonstration, they instructed producers as to classing standards, and delivered an interesting presentation on the angora/mohair industry in South Africa. South Africa has approx 900 Angora breeders producing the majority of the world’s 5.5 million kgs of Mohair in a 500 km radius of Port Elizabeth. Australia, on the other hand, has a small number of growers around the country producing 200,000 kg. South Africa has moved from heavy cutting animals to easier care animals, producing lighter cuts of fine Mohair. Australian animals are denser, and not as fine, and cutting heavier weights overall. The long term future for Mohair looks good as long as the critical mass being produced does not continue to fall. Both countries face similar issues, including predators, (fox & dogs in Aust and jackals and lynx in SA), specialty labour (including shearers, classers, shedhands etc), land use (cropping and National Parks in Aust & Game Parks in SA) and the overall cost of production. HUNTER FEATURE ANGORA GOAT SHOW

Held on Sunday 17th February 2008, this event was an outstanding success. Angoras, together with over 40 mohair fleeces; boer and dairy goats, together made up over 150 strong exhibit at this years Maitland Hunter River Super Show. While the Feature Show itself has enjoyed good support over the years from beyond the Hunter Region, and this year no exception, it was most encouraging to see such an increase in support from within this small region. Of the 6 exhibitors, 4 were from the Hunter accounting for 48 of the 58 animals brought to this show. WAGIN WOOLORAMA—Western Australia 7th & 8th March 2008 Judge: Mark Ferguson Assistant Judge: Susan Jordan Angora and Mohair Sections. Although the shed looked depleted of animals as there were no cashmere goats, the numbers of angoras being shown remained stable. Four (4) breeders took entries for the angora section - Jane and Don Orchard, Inge Meyer, Rosa Potaliva and Gary and Margaret Atwell. Marbellup Brook Angoras owned by Jane and Don Orchard were the most successful exhibitors winning all major trophies in both the angora and mohair sections. The Supreme Champion Angora was a junior doe who showed all the best characteristics of the breed - exhibiting a fine even fleece over the whole body with excellent style and character. The Champion Mohair Fleece was from the kid mohair class, and the reserve from the fine kid class. The animals and fleeces were judged by Mark Ferguson of Mallee Park Angoras, Victoria. We can expect large numbers in early spring as the young pups leave their mothers protection to start a new life on their own and are on the lookout for something easy to eat like carrion or new born kids. Landholders should commence baiting prior to lambing and kidding and as most lambing takes place in May to August it is not too late to get into a control program. If you have had a problem in previous years, then you will most probably have one again this year. As kidding normally takes place later than lambing , the new born kids are extremely vulnerable because of the very nature of their size, and a doe’s habit of planting them while she goes off to feed. By that time of the year lambs are normally too big for foxes to handle unless they are sick or weak. Past experience has shown that the most successful control programs are achieved when a whole community gets together to do a baiting at the same time. If a fox dies on your farm it will not be long before a new one from next door will come in and take over the patch. Groups of landholders proposing to implement community baiting programs can approach the Department of Agriculture for advise and assistance. The Department will undertake a fox risk assessment for each group of properties and approve the relevant supply of 1080 baits. Baits are now available at many rural merchandise stores but before you can pick them up you will need a permit from your local Agricultural Department. Foxes are arguably the number one challenge facing the Goat breeding Industry in WA as they can take large numbers of newborn kids unless they are controlled by the use of poisons, fencing or guard animals (dogs & alpacas etc). Consider the loss of each kid on not only its monetary value but on future breeding programs. There are several publications, which are available from Ag WA which are full of helpful hints and worth reading.

Tasmanian Show notes This year we combined with the Dairy Goat and Boer Goat breeders and held a very full, but enjoyable field day in conjunction with the competition side of things. The venue was Campbell Town Show Grounds. Around 90 - 100 people came from all over Tasmania and all the feedback was positive, so we are looking at doing something similar next year. Judge was Margaret Piccoli and guest speakers included Margaret Piccoli - CIGA, David Williams - AMT, Peter Schuster - MLA and Bonnie Beall - DPiWE (Department of Primary Industry, Water and Environment.) Our show ribbons didn't arrive on time, so we improvised with some home-made rosettes to distinguish our major prize-winners, which caused much chuckling and amusement! “The things we do….” This month’s award for “the things we do” goes to the Tasmanian Division for there improvisation for the late arrival of pre-ordered show ribbons. Organisation for the Tasmanian Show stalled when their show ribbons failed to arrive on time but a not-to-be-deterred Division President, quickly visited the local newsagent to purchase alternative ribbons. Will these ribbons be kept as mementos or will they be recycled as adornments for the next birthday present? As they say, “the show must go on”… with or without ribbons. Clarification on last month’s contribution to “THE THINGS WE DO” regarding shearing Maremma guard dogs. It is advised that fibre removed from these dogs is considered contamination in mohair. The editor wished to assure concerned readers that the animal in question was shorn outside of the shearing shed using alternative shearing gear so to eliminate any risk of contamination of the mohair lines with dog hair. Any mohair producer sending dog hair to the brokers or buyers will not only look like a “bit of a goose”, but will also be charged for the trouble of disposing of the fibre.:) Rowena Doyle
