Sydney artist Jenny Sage has won the People’s Choice award at this year’s Archibald Prize with her self-portrait, After Jack. A work the artist describes as a way of sharing her grief after the loss of Jack, her beloved husband of 55 years. Born in Shanghai of Russian parentage, Sage came to Australia in 1948. She studied at East Sydney Technical College and the Franklin School of Art in New York. After freelancing as an illustrator for 30 years, she has painted full- time since 1985 Jenny has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize twenty times and highly commended eight times. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. ***** One of the biggest winter cultural events being held in Hobart this year is set to get even bigger. The Eighth Annual Festival of Voices has been expanded from Five to Ten days to accommodate all the events. From July 6th to the 16th the festival will offer more than 10 thousand singers and audience members, the opportunity to explore a range of vocal disciplines, including choir and ensemble singing, spoken word, cabaret, debate, poetry, storytelling and hiphop.
