The “ Karavan Zewo Kolera ” (KZK) with its amb itious or even unb elieva b le ob jec tives of reinforcing p rom ot ion o fc holera preve ntive m ea sures system atica lly, d istribution o f ORS and Hygiene kits, c om bat d isc riminative beha viorand prom ote soc ial mob iliza tion fo r zero c ho lera sprea d in 500,000 families or 3,000,000 individua ls and mo re than

2,000 schools throughout 40 communes of the 10 Department in Haiti, raised many doubts about whether it ispossib le o r not . How wo uld ea c h p op ula tion rea c t? Is it p ossib le to ga ther a ll these resource s? Haiti Partic ipa tive – Burea u Program me Urgenc e (BPU/ HP) relied strongly on the HP secret: “ Men nan men, nou Kapab” “ Hands

together, we c an” . The sta ndard ma inta ined in ta rge ts per com mune wa s: 12,500 families sensitized in p op ula tedor dense area s, 1,200 fam ilies sup p lied in ORS, hygiene kits and Aq ua ta bs and 50 vulnerab le schools sensitized andsup p lied with schools kits, one mo nth rat ion.

Then the d rea m step ped in the entry of the t ruth p a th o ffic ia lly in Dec em ber 17 – 19, 2010 as c ollec tive effort withthe supp ort of Unic ef-Nutrition, Plasticart, Digicel, IFRC & Brazilian Bata illon/ MINUSTAH by reac hing Cité-Soleil a tlarge with the 1st communal edition. Amazingly they surpassed or even doubled the standard expected:Sensitiza tion and Educ ation rea c hed 97 sc hoo ls on Dec em ber 17, and on Dec em ber 19 ap proxima tely 23,000families; 1,350 families rec eived hyg iene kits and ORS. T-shirts of sensitiza tion were either d istributed for lac ta ting

women. As Ca pta in Benzi Odilson of Braba tt1 rec og nized it in the no tes of e va lua tion, it w as the 1st Ma ssive a c tionund ertaken in the Co ntext of the Cho lera outb rea k with and for the Cité-Soleil pop ula tion; he continues to say it is a

Days of Distribution a nd sensitization with 155 vulnerab le schools' Direc tors

During two days, séa nc es of séa nc es of sensitiza tion a nd tra ining on how to p rote c t younger pup ils 3-15 aga instcholera have been realized with 155 schools directors of kindergarten and primary schools in order to prevent

c holera sprea d in 155 sc hools in Delma s. The Educ ation sec tion of Haiti Participa tive – Emerge ncy Office had teams

supported by cholera prevention specialists from Health section that technically sensitized and trained thed irec tors. Each direc tor was hap py to rec eive one m onth ration c holera p revention kit com po sed of: Aqua tabs for500 liters of w ater, ORS (for rehydra tion on spot ), Soa p zote and Band a , hygienic p aper and hyg ienic serviette s. TheDirec tors eng age d them selves into fighting fo r zero-cho lera sp rea d in the sc hoo ls system atica lly and either to tra inpup ils wh ile t ransforming them into sensitiza tion a gents. Implementation of Ac tivitiesAt Carrefour Aeroport, the activities layout not only

As la tely in C ité-Soleil, A p oe m c om pletion aga instc holera betw ee n Delma s sc hoo ls has bee n hosted as apublic sensitization activity with the younger pupils asthe p otent ial sensitiza tion agents. This is either anindicator of the extent to which the sensitization hasbee n e ffec tive in p up ils. From the 155 sc hools sensitized

in Delmas by HP in the c ontext of the KZK, ten schoo lswe re c hosen to rep resent w ith several pup ils in Uniformfrom ea c h sc hool. The Colleg e “ La Pleiade” ofDelma s32 came out w ith the pea k notes from the m ostcomplete and participatory Jury composed of 5

members: one representative from HP, one fromVivario, one from ADRA, one mem ber rep resenting theDirectors in Delmas and one pupil as memberrep resenting the p up ils. The poe m tha t won the first p rizevery impacted on the public with its forms ofpersonifying the Cholera and m aking the threa ts so visib le, and p resenting the stric t and c onstant app lic a tion ofthe standard preventive measures and the vigilance, as the only possibilities to remaining safe and effectivelyob ta in Zero-propagation of Cho lera. It conc ludes by these p reve ntion messages: “ Mezanmi Pa Janm b lye a p liketou t prensip ligyèn yo” !
