THE Additive Portfolio for Fiber Reinforced Composites

In order to exploit the full potential of modern composites based on thermoplastics or duroplastics, the use of special additives provides great benefits. They are even used in starting raw materials for component manufacturing. For example, in sizing they are incorporated to improve processing or bonding of the fibers to various matrix systems. When directly used in

Coupling Agents

BYK-C 8013

Solvent-free, Polymeric Coupling Agent to Increase the Mechanical Strength of Carbon Fiber-reinforced Radical-curing Systems

BYK-C 8013 is the first coupling agent for carbon fibers in the world. The additive is used in vinyl esters and unsaturated polyester resins that will be subsequently processed with carbon fibers into composite components. Strengths across the fiber are considerably increased and therefore enable a greater design freedom.

Benefits

Designed for:• SMC/BMC, Pultrusion, RTM and Prepreg• Improves the mechanical properties, the flexural strength

and transverse tensile strength up to 70 %

Improved Quality• Works with any VE/UP resin system • Use with all carbon fiber types• Guarantees a consistently high quality of the finished part • Reduces the standard deviation

Easy Handling• Liquid additive, easy incorporation• Add to the composite production at any time

- In the sizing bath - In the second sizing - In the resin system

The improved fiber-matrix bonding in BYK-C 8013 improves both the transverse tensile strength as well as the flexural strength of the composite. The chemical composition of the additive enables bonding to the fibers and simultaneously to the resin matrix. This unique characteristic allows changes in the component design and the production of more resilient parts. BYK-C 8013 shows a considerable increase in mechanical strengths particularly in hot curing procedures such as SMC/BMC, Pultrusion, Prepreg or RTM.

The reactive additive can be added to the sizing during the fiber production or to the resin shortly before processing. As a subsequent so-called “second sizing”, BYK-C 8013 can be applied to the fiber, for example by spraying, without having to remove the first sizing beforehand. It is ideal for vinyl ester and unsaturated polyester resins in combination with all carbon fiber types.

Coupling Agents

BYK-C 8001

Polymer Coupling Agent for Increasing the Mechanical Strength of Epoxy Resin Systems

BYK-C 8001 was specially developed for use in glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin systems. The additive results in improved mechanical properties of the component through increased fiber-matrix bonding. The extent of the improvement depends on the choice of the glass fiber and epoxy resin system. However, it is not dependent on the age of the selected glass fiber.

BYK-C 8001 can be added to either the hardener or the epoxy resin, although it should be added to the epoxy resin just before application. The additive can be stored in standard amine hardeners. The maximum storage time is affected by the hardener composition and the additive dosage.

Benefits

Design freedom• Universal application• Improves the mechanical properties

up to 60 %

Improved quality• Functions with any epoxy-compatible

glass fiber irrespective of any age• Guarantees a constantly high quality

of the finished part

Coupling Agents

BYK-C 8003 Coupling Agent for VE-/UP-fiber Composite Materials

BYK-C 8003 is another representative of the range of coupling additives with the application area of fiber composite materials. The additive is used in unsaturated polyester resin based composites and wherever strength needs to be increased or the structural degree of freedom enhanced.

BYK-C 8003 improves both the static and the dynamic resilience of the component through improved fiber-matrix bonding. The chemical composition of the additive enables bonding to the fibers and simultaneously to the resin matrix. This unique characteristic enables changes in the component design and the production of more resilient components. Another key benefit is a cost saving due to a targeted reduction in wall thickness whilst maintaining the necessary strength.

The reactive additive is added just before the processing of the resin. It is suitable for vinyl ester, unsaturated polyester or styrene-free resins in combination with all glass fiber types of any age. BYK-C 8003 has no negative influence on the processing parameters of the resin system or compound.

Benefits

Design freedom• Universal application• Improves the mechanical properties up to 60 %

Improved quality• Functions with any VE-/UP-compatible glass fiber irrespective

of any age• Guarantees a constantly high quality of the finished part

BYK-P 2710BYK-P 2720 Viscosity Control Technology (VCT) – Processing Additives for Epoxy Systems

Viscosity Control Technology contains a couple of well-engineered additives to design viscosity levels of thixotropic resin systems.

High application viscosities and high sag resistance immediately after mixing the resin and hardener for application purposes remain unchanged compared to standard systems.

BYK-P 2710 and BYK-P 2720 are recommended for solvent-free and solvent-borne epoxy resins containing hydrophilic fumed silica for anti-sagging properties in medium/high viscous systems.

Benefits

Process + Quality• Shorter production time• Adjusted viscosities are leading to better

mixing quality• Lower viscosities permit lower pressure and

greater output in metering machines

BYK-P 2710 – Thixbreaker• Add to epoxy resin• Effective with hydrophilic, fumed silica• Resin viscosity can be adjusted and controlled• A high amount of additive blocks the structural build-up

of the hydrophilic fumed silica and avoids an increase in viscosity

BYK-P 2720 – Thixbooster• Add to amine hardener• Effective with hydrophilic, fumed silica• Hardener viscosity can be adjusted and controlled• Dosage must be calculated always on the amount of

hydrophilic fumed silica in the entire system

• Use of cheaper hydrophilic fumed silica instead of hydrophobic fumed silica

• Shorter production time due to lower viscosities and faster incorporation

Benefits

• Improve the wetting of glass and/or carbon fibers• Higher product quality – lower scrap rate

Benefits

• Faster production • Surface ready for coating after demolding• Suitable for polyurethane, epoxy and unsaturated polyester

resin systems

BYK-P 9912BYK-P 9912 an innovative member of the processing additive family combines fast processing with excellent surface quality for composites and is therefore superior compared to internal mold release agents. By using BYK-P 9912 the downtime of the mold is shortened and the application frequency of the external mold release is prolonged. This results in a higher process efficiency and output.

Another important feature is the excellent surface quality directly after demolding and the no longer required power wash process prior to coating.

BYK-P 9920 was specially developed for use in fiber-reinforced plastics. The additive improves the wetting of glass and carbon fibers, which reduces air entrapment and porosity. The additive prevents non-wetted areas and reduces the scrap rates. Because of the high content of non-volatile matter, it is particularly suitable for closed processes. The epoxy-functional groups contained in the additive enable embedding into the matrix.

Laminating resins are usually based on unsaturated polyester resins and contain a certain amount of hydrophilic fumed silica (0.7 %–1.0 %) to create a slight thixotropy. This thixotropy enables the laminate to stay on vertical surfaces without sagging. Laminating resins are used for a broad variety of products and are applied in a hand lay-up or spray-up process. Before processing, the resin can be stored for several weeks. The fumed silica often settles during that period, leaving a clear layer of resin at the top of the container. Especially in non-transparent containers, this carries the risk of using resin without any fumed silica. This problem has been known for many years but so far it has not been possible to resolve it without disproportionate expense.

ANTI-TERRA-210 creates a stable laminating resin. It is no longer necessary to mix before use. The additive guarantees safe handling and improved storage stability. The very low product dosage means that this solution is particularly cost effective. ANTI-TERRA-210 has no impact on curing properties.
