Monash Access Champions Leadership Day

Term 2 Issue 5 28th April 2017

On Friday 17/3 a group of Year 9 and 10 students joined 10 other schools for the Monash Access Champions Leadership Day. This is the start of a year long journey where a small group of Year 9 and 10 students will work on a project. Year 9 students will work on linking in with the school whereas the Year 10s will focus on linking in with the community. The students were involved in four sessions during the day focusing on building leadership and teamwork skills as well as gaining a greater understanding of what their project could be about. They also had a session learning about ways they could promote their project.A great day was had by all. The students especially loved the food provided for lunch, the photo taken before the sprinklers got back around to them and the Year 9s enjoyed the team building activity that involved building a free standing structure using marshmallows and spaghetti! Along with the fun there was a lot of interesting discussion and plenty of ideas to start the two groups thinking about their actual project topic. The Year 9s had their mentor from Monash University join them for the whole day and she will continue to work with the group throughout the year. The mentor is a student studying engineering at Monash University.Student highlights of the day included: “I enjoyed meeting our mentor and starting to brainstorm ideas for our project” “It was great learning so much knowledge in a short period of time, especially about the importance of teamwork and encouraging everyone to do their best” “I was able to build up my confidence by participating in the activities and being prepared to speak in front of a group of people I did not know”Overall it was a great day enjoyed by all.

Every year, ICJ Victoria, an organisation that is striving to "achieve a just, democratic, peaceful and humane society", hosts an event known as the Community Opening of the Legal Year. They gather members in the legal fields and the broader community to celebrate the diversity of our cultures and the rights that we each possess. It was held on 30 January 2017 at Waldron Hall, in the County Court attended by over 100 people. It was an honour to be selected to be a guest speaker by Olwyn Gray to represent the Skyline Foundation and on behalf of Narre Warren South P-12 College alongside another participant Andreas Zakhari. Through this experience, I was able to be mentored by Sally Brown who is currently retired from being a Judge in the Family Court. She provided insight to the field of Legal and the effective ways in delivering speech to a specific target audience. It is a pleasure to be a part of Skyline Foundation for the second year that has already opened the doors to many different opportunities and experiences. Furthermore, they provide mentor-ships and support to help VCE students achieve the best possible outcome.

Community Opening of the Legal Year

Dear Parent/Carer

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2017 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 9 May, Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May 2017. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday 12 May 2017.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.

Large print, braille and black and white versions of the tests are available for students that require them.

Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.

If your child is eligible for support due to disability or an exemption, you should discuss this with his/her teacher prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the principal. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the school.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

Yours sincerely

Rob DuncanCollege Principal
