A word from the Director...

Microsoft will soon be releasing two exciting products in the coming year: Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Windows 7 is the next Windows operating system, which succeeds Vista. The Windows 7 beta has already received excellent reviews for its speed and new features. ICT has been testing Windows 7 for months and will soon be asking for testers from the Maxwell community. As with the Vista rollout two years ago, a group from ICT will visit each department in Maxwell during the fall semester to provide

a demo and overview of the new features in Windows 7. The official public release of Windows 7 is scheduled for late October. You should start to see Windows 7 computers in stores in early November, and on computers in Maxwell sometime next spring/summer. For more information regarding Windows 7, please refer to the article on the Emerging Technology page of this newsletter.

Office 2010, which will replace Office 2007, is expected to be released to the public sometime in early 2010. ICT will be testing the beta as soon as it’s released. Early reports show that Office 2010 will also introduce some exciting new features such as: better transitions and animations in PowerPoint; improved document searching in Word; new visualizations in Excel; and a conversation view in Outlook, to name a few. For database users, Access will feature a new, Excel-like Expression Builder for creating code with plain English, as well as an improved Macro Designer with similar plain text-to-code conversion capabilities. The application will also be more web-savvy and will allow you to create web-specific databases that do not include any incompatible objects. Best of all, Office will run in true 64-bit mode. This will improve the overall speed and computing power of all of the Office applications since Maxwell computers run in 64-bit mode.

Maxwell users will find Windows 7 and Office 2010 extremely familiar because they are based on the same code as Vista and Office 2007. This will ensure a smooth transition and will allow the Maxwell community to quickly benefit from the new features of both products.

Edward S. GodwinComputer Consultant

Eddie has been with ICT for 5 years. His position has become

multi-faceted and covers almost the full scope of IT: from correcting Word docs, to repairing computers/laptops, to creating a database driven website, to programming macros in Outlook, to creating and managing objects in our Active Directory Organizational Unit - Eddie has done it all. He is also responsible for maintaining and scheduling the ICT Rental Items, including the MTC’s, and is the department’s point of contact for the Maxwell Schools’ Electronic/Smart Classrooms. Eddie’s position is a constant challenge that keeps him on his toes, day-in and day-out.Something that you may not know about Eddie is that he is of the Lumbee Tribe, a little known non-reservation Native American tribe that resides primarily in Robeson County, North Carolina.

Jane M. Read Associate Professor of Geography

How long have you been at 1. Maxwell? Jane Read has been with the Maxwell School for ten years. How do you use technology in your research and/or teaching?2. A lot of Professor Read’s research and teaching is focused on geographic information technologies (GIT). GIT are the technologies that allow us to locate position, map, and analyze different types of data. The technologies that Professor Read uses include: geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), and remote sensing (use of aerial photography and satellite imagery). These technologies use specialized software that often require powerful computers capable of processing large files. In her research, Professor Read uses GIT to help understand patterns of land use and land cover, especially forests - mainly in the tropics. She is currently working on an interdisciplinary project with a team of researchers and the Makushi Amerindian people in the Rupununi savannas of Guyana, attempting to understand how Makushi culture is changing and, in turn, how that impacts the wildlife. She uses: satellite imagery to get a top-down view of the landscape and to map the vegetation; GPS to determine where the researchers are collecting the data; and GIS to map locations of animal sightings and hunting kill sites. One of the great things about GIS is that you can bring together many types of data and analyze them. For example, to create a complete picture of the entire system in the Rupununi research, Professor Read brings together the environmental data from satellite

images, the socioeconomic data collected by the anthropologists, and the wildlife observation data collected by the biologists.Professor Read teaches introductory and advanced classes in geographic information systems and remote sensing to students from across campus. The classes have both lecture and laboratory sessions, with the lab sessions taking place in one of the two dedicated spatial analysis laboratories housed in the Department of Geography. What new technology are you interested in using either in your 3. teaching or for your personal use? Professor Read looks forward to decreasing costs and wider availability of geospatial datasets as these technologies become more popular.

**Many thanks from the ICT department to Professor Read for her participation in our newsletter!**

Product name:1. Windows 7Manufacturer:2. MicrosoftProduct description:3. Windows 7 is the next evolutionary step of the Windows Operating System, scheduled for release in stores in October, 2009.

Cool features: 4. Libraries: Libraries are a new way to display folders and files. A library can show the contents of several folders at the same time, but they don’t actually store items - they monitor folders that contain items. Just think of them as saved folder searches.Aero upgrades: The Aero user interface that was introduced in Vista has a few new tricks. The Aero Snap feature lets you easily “snap” a window to the sides of the monitor - this allows for easy comparison of two files. Aero Peek is a feature that lets you “peek” behind all of the open windows on your system. You can get a look at the desktop or find a specific window that is possibly obscured or hidden by other windows. The Aero Shake feature can be used to “shake” any other windows off the screen - in other words, minimize - reducing screen clutter.Ribbon Everywhere: The “Ribbon” style user interface that was introduced in Office 2007 has made its way to other applications in Windows 7. The screen shot is of the Windows 7 version of Paint, and shows how the

Emerging TechnologyRibbon has replaced the traditional menus. With the Ribbon being built into Windows, third party developers are now free to build applications that also use a Ribbon interface. You can expect to see more and more applications replacing traditional menu systems with Ribbon style systems.

New Taskbar “SuperBar”: While the Windows 7 taskbar works generally like its predecessor, it brings with it a number of changes that take windows productivity to the next level. One of the best new taskbar features is the ability to “pin” applications to it - meaning the icon will always be on it whether the application is open or closed. The other great feature is the addition of thumbnails for running application windows. As you can see in the picture, by holding the mouse over the Internet Explorer icon you can see thumbnails of the two web pages that are open. Click the thumbnail for the page you’d like to go to - IE brings you to that window.

Power Savings & More Power: Windows 7 is furthering the power saving features that were introduced in Vista. This allows for computers to see increased energy savings while in use, and especially when not in use. Also, Windows 7 is bringing 64-bit computing to the masses. The advantage of 64-bit is that the operating system gets to, in essence, use a bigger road. 64-bit computing can get your computer off city streets and onto the freeway.

The Global CollaboratoryVideo is a wonderful way to deliver information and create excitement on a webpage. We can take advantage of that to better promote the Maxwell School and the many content-rich educational events that occur every semester. Anything from a full recording of a conference to an edited and narrated highlight reel can be produced in the school. Often you will want our assistance with these projects, however, it is certainly possible to learn video editing and create videos on your own in the IML. Be sure to contact [email protected] with your ideas so we can help plan the best course of action.Flash Video and EnsembleWe are pleased to offer a new venue for online videos. A management system called Ensemble was developed here at Syracuse University and is being used by many departments on campus. The marquee example is the SU Video Showcase found at: video.syr.edu - you can search for the term “Maxwell” to find some of our promoted videos.ICT has an account on the system that allows us to setup separate video groups and permit sharing of the videos to other groups. We are actively porting this into the new Ektron based website design. Each department or program can have permission to manage their own videos and easily embed them into any website or blog. The goal is an appearance similar to Whitman’s Video Showcase at: whitman.syr.edu/VideoArchive/ - you’ll see that the videos exist within the main Whitman web site design. The major advantages of these changes are the video management functions provided by Ensemble and the cross-platform video compatibility of Adobe Flash video. It is now much easier to attach

and edit information (known as metadata) to a video and display it to a viewer. The videos themselves are Flash files, a format that is playable within a web browser on practically all computers. As you may know, Windows Media files open a separate player and often won’t work on Mac OS computers without downloading a specific piece of software.

This all means we are moving away from Windows Media as the main delivery format. Our Windows Media server will not be turned off for quite a while, so there is no need to panic about losing your videos. However, we will work with you over the next year to migrate your videos into the new system.

This is one of many options to deliver your multimedia content to the online audience. We provide this Ensemble/Flash package as a fully supported workflow from recording to storage to playback functionality. Other choices to deliver videos are available via the many online video sharing sites. ICT can still assist with your recording and editing needs, but be sure to think about using online video to a greater extent now that we have a more full-featured system.

Name a cell, or range of cells, in an Excel spreadsheetEvery cell in an Excel workbook has a cell reference: the column letter, followed by the row number (A1, B12, C3). When you have a cell selected, the Name Box indicates the reference for that cell. The Name Box is found directly above column letters A and B. In this example, cell A1 is selected, and the Name Box indicates this. You can manually type a cell reference in the Name Box to go to a specific cell - here’s how: click once in the Name Box to highlight the current reference, type the reference for the cell you’d like to go to, then hit Enter. Excel jumps you to that location of your spreadsheet.

You can also create more meaningful names for cells. After naming a cell (or range of cells), you can go to that location simply by choosing the unique name from the Name Box. The location can be anywhere in your workbook. For example, if you are working with data on worksheet #12, and need to find out a figure on worksheet #3, as long as you’ve given that cell a name, you can use the Name Box to quickly get to the information. Here’s how to name a cell:
