The Parade in Frontof My HouseBrian L. Phelps, CEO

One of the requirements of my job is to live on campus. My house faces the Tyndall Center, and every morning and evening I can watch a thought-provoking parade of young families up and down the driveway, dropping off and picking up children.

Yesterday afternoon, I saw a young mother walking in to

pick up her child. She was talking on her cell phone, and I could hear her telling someone what a bad day she’d had and how tired she was. But a few minutes later, when she came out with her son, I heard enthusiasm in her voice as they talked about what he had done that day and their plans for the evening.

That example is not unique. I’ve seen numerous rushed, stressed parents dropping off children at Tyndall, sometimes with older and younger siblings in tow. I’ve seen tired, dusty parents in the afternoons go in to Tyndall, only to come out re-animated with their little ones pulling their arms or chattering excitedly beside them.

More families have more struggles these days. It seems especially trying for parents with young children. The five-star Tyndall Center here at Sipe’s provides top notch programs for toddlers, preschoolers, and four-year-olds. I like to think that we help make the days and lives of these families better.

It’s easy to look at a young parents, many with tattoos or nose rings or strange hair or odd clothes, and wonder what the world is coming to. I am lucky enough to see those parents in a few unguarded moments with their children. All the smiling, giggling, hopping, talking, tugging, showing, sharing togetherness I see is encouraging. The daily parade in front of my house has renewed my faith in today’s families.

What’s the bright spot in your day? Tony England, the food services manager at Sipe’s, hopes it’s the meals he serves. And he has served many of them in his twelve years at Sipe’s.

“You never know what sort of home life these kids have,” Tony says. “And this could be the only decent meal they get. I want the meals we serve to lift their spirits every day.”

Tony is a food services department of one, working behind the scenes at Sipe’s. Without fanfare (but with a great deal of stirring, slicing, seasoning, baking, browning, boiling, pouring, dipping, and scurrying) he delivers good meals to the Sipe’s children and young adults. “I could just throw something out there,” Tony says, “but I want the kids to look forward to their meals and enjoy them. People eat with all their senses; I want it to look and smell good, as well as taste good.”

He continues, “The food you serve is a direct reflection on you. It shows how you feel about yourself and your job, and I find my job very rewarding.”

Tony learned to cook during eight years in the Navy. He also learned the morale-boosting power of a good meal. “Your meals can be the high point or the low point of your day,” he says. “I want to be sure it’s a high point for these kids.”

Tony says he wants to be remembered as someone who made a difference. That is what he is doing at Sipe’s, one meal at a time.

Food, Glorious Food!

Over the years, a few people who believed in our mission have left a part of their worldly treasure to Sipe’s after they no longer needed it. These estate gifts are a significant and treasured source of support for us. If Sipe’s is to continue serving children on solid financial footing, we need more such gifts. There are many planned giving choices available, and planning a gift now can have advantages for you as well as for Sipe’s. If you believe in our work with children and families, and you want to support it, please discuss the options with your attorney or financial planner.

Constantly in motion before a meal, food services manager Tony England talked while he cooked, sharing his thoughts about his work at Sipe’s.

You Can Help Us HelpEvery day, something good happens for a child at Sipe’s. Usually it is something pretty simple, like a hot meal or a cozy nap. It might be riding a horse or driving a car for the first time. It might be a hug or a smile or a giggle. In bright, comfortable buildings on our spacious, rural campus, good things happen for children.

Countless people have donated to Sipe’s over the years to support our work with underprivileged children. If you would like to be one of our benefactors, use the enclosed envelope to help good things keep happening for children.

Baby, You Can Drive My CarSchool. Work. Grocery store. Doctor’s office. Wal-Mart. Most people have to get to those places. In Catawba County, most of us, if not all (especially if you live on County Home Road) need a car to do so. Because it is an essential life skill here, we help the residents of Houston Cottage become licensed drivers.

It is not easy, and it’s not cheap.

Being in the passenger seat of a car with an eighteen-year-old first-time driver is no small challenge. As president Brian Phelps says, it takes someone with “nerves of steel and the patience of Job.” The Houston staff take this job on with varying degrees of trepidation, or as Blanche Weaver, teacher-counselor, says, “It’s an experience. Being a driver’s ed teacher would not be my chosen profession.”

The cost of teaching driving is another challenge, with insurance and car repairs making a noticeable dent in our budget. For vehicles, we use a ten-year-old Dodge pickup truck we were given several years ago by a board member and a Ford Focus we bought used in 2009 with a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities. While we stress safety and teach good driving and maintenance habits, mistakes and accidents happen. The Focus has needed a few repairs in the past ten months, includinga new transmission; however, the truck may not survive its latest mishap.

Though a drain on our staff and our bank account, being able to drive is essential for our young people’s future success. Yes, it’s a challenge. But it results in young adults who are more capable, more independent, and more ready to become productive members of society.

Teacher-Counselor Blanche Weaver rides with one of the Houston residents. “It took him a few tries to get his permit,” she says. “Then when he did, I was so excited I just cried.”

Two things would enhance our ability to teach young people to drive: 1) A couple of reliable used vehicles. 2) Licensed drivers who will ride with our residents while they practice driving. If you can help us with our driving program, please contact our development office.

Summer (Camp) is Almost Here! Our fourth annual Huckleberry Summer Camp will begin on June 13, and it’s already nearly full.

“Our summer camp program gets better every year,” says the director of early age education Sheila Moseley. “This year, based upon parent surveys, we’re adjusting the schedule to include more time for the favorite activities like horseback riding. Also, we are putting greater emphasis on the environment this summer and will engage the campers in more nature exploration on our huge campus.”

Ms. Moseley adds, “We have earned a five star rating from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Child Development. We’re very proud of that.”

Huckleberry Summer Camp is a simple, activity-oriented experience for children. Crafts, games, hikes, horses, fishing ponds, sprinklers, field trips, and more keep campers busy and engaged. The well-qualified staff, kid-tested activities, good food, fresh air, wide-open space, and outstanding parent reviews keep children coming back year after year.

Sipe’s president Brian Phelps says, “The summer camp program has been one of the most refreshing additions to our services. It is an opportunity to be of service in a positive way to many more young children and families across the Catawba Valley.”

Help Around the HomeA number of organizations have helped in some fashion around here lately. Three are pictured here.

Volunteers from Kohl’s in Hickory cleared out debris and planted bedding plants donated by Bethlehem Greenhouse and Nursery.

The Circle K Club from Catawba Valley Community College undertook a painting project in Houston Cottage.

How Much is a Home Worth? It’s easy enough to put a monetary value on your home. Banks, tax assessors, and real estate agents do it all the time. But beyond that, what is your home worth to you?

How well would you manage without your kitchen or your bathroom? How much would you miss your refrigerator, bed, TV, or heating and cooling system? How important to you are those who live with you—your spouse, siblings, parents, or pets? What about those special things, like family photos, heirlooms, and other treasures? What about the intangible comforts a home provides, like privacy, familiarity, security, and stability?

Considering everything that having a home means makes it clearer how devastating it is to be homeless.

If you’ve read our past newsletters even a little bit, you probably know that Sipe’s has reopened Houston Cottage for older adolescents who are homeless. We’re helping these young people do what is necessary to get themselves out of the cycle of homelessness and poverty. They’re learning skills, getting educated, taking responsibility, finding jobs. It’s gratifying to see their growth.

But it is astounding how many 18-21 year olds need this service, just in this county alone. We get calls almost every day. Unfortunately, we cannot take everyone. Whereas our other programs receive some subsidies or parent fees, we have found no money for homeless teenagers other than charitable donations. Though the community has been generous, the money goes out much faster than it comes in.

Think about your home. Then I hope you’ll think about helping some hardworking young folks at Sipe’s get ready for their own home.

Thank You, Killians Hardware! Maintenance supervisor Steve Cline lets no grass grow under his feet, thanks to the Toro mower generously donated to Sipe’s by Killians Hardware of Hickory. For decades, Killians has supplied Sipe’s (and other local non-profit agencies) with a mower for the grass growing season. The Toro’s speed and maneuverability enable Steve to keep the many acres of grass at Sipe’s looking good.
