From the Principal After a term at home spending time with family, it really is good to be back at my desk! I’d like to extend thanks to Miss Law for very capably taking on the role of Relieving Principal during my absence, particularly at the beginning of the year which is always especially busy. Thanks also to Mrs Shankaran for her work as Relieving Deputy Principal throughout the term. Attached to this week’s newsletter is the Department of Education’s

School Community Charter which has been produced to support a respectful environment in our schools. It has been developed after extensive consultation with many stakeholder groups, including the Federation of P&Cs, Primary and Secondary Principals’ groups, the Teachers Federation and the AECG. It outlines a framework for positive interactions and provides parents and the school community with guidance in engaging as partners in their children’s learning. It also highlights unacceptable behaviour that has no place in our school communities. I hope you find it interesting – if there are any aspects of the Charter you would like to discuss please contact the school.

Sports in Schools On Monday 6th May, we’re really lucky to have “Sport in Schools” begin at our school.

Students will learn skills and be involved in activities that will be provided by specialist

teachers. These sessions will support

students at our School Athletics Carnival

and the specialist teachers will be able to assist students and teachers at the

carnival. It’s a great opportunity and I’m

sure the children will love it!!!

Debating News On Thursday 2nd of May, the Rooty Hill debating team travelled to Eastern Creek Public

School for the first debate of the Pickles Shield competition.

Amarli, Stefanie, Jaedus and Ashmita made up the team who argued the negative case for

the topic “Cats are better pets than dogs”. Both teams did an outstanding job and the

adjudicator took a long time to decide who

the winner would be. Unfortunately, Rooty

Hill did not come up with the win, but have

taken on the feedback given by the

adjudicator and are ready to work on their

next debate. Miss Madden

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 17th MAY Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: • Walking with them the whole way to school • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 17 May 2019! For more information, visit www.walk.com.au KIDS!

Woolworths Earn and Learn 2019 has commenced. Once again our school will participate

for the opportunity to collect some wonderful resources for our boys and girls. Last year

we received paints, paint brushes, cardboard of various shapes and colours, scissors, oil

pastels, pencil caddies pencils and other wonderful items for our classrooms. For every $10

you spend at a Woolworth’s store, you will receive an Earn and Learn sticker - these will be

collected between 1st May and 25th June. There are three collection boxes one in our

office foyer, one in the canteen and one at Woolworths Mt Druitt. Sticker sheets are

available at the office and I have also attached one to this newsletter. I will keep you

posted on our points score! Thank you Michele Power
