CANDICE ALFORD, RN 2 East Medicine – Cary Hospital As a leader, Candice’s team trusts and respects her. She facilitates a culture of respect and never asks her team to do anything she’s not willing to do herself. Rounding every day on her unit’s patients, she’s committed to ensuring the physical and emotional needs of the patients are always met. Focused on patient safety, she developed a falls reduction plan around purposeful toileting that has led to significant reductions in patient falls. Candice also serves as a facilitator for the Communication in Healthcare course. MOLLY FLYNN Pharmacy – Raleigh Campus Molly is a dependable member of the pharmacy team who consistently values her patients' needs above her own. She has taken it upon herself to serve as an educator for her nursing and provider colleagues on 6A. She provides information about new clinical and logistical initiatives as well as regular Pharmacy Facts. This provides a fun and collaborative way to share information about everything from the influenza vaccine to the proper procedure for handling the extravasation of intravenous medications. Her efforts have helped improve understanding among clinicians regarding these medication-related situations and help prepare them to handle similar situations in the future. Molly also takes time to thoroughly review patient medication lists and provide education before discharge, ensuring patients receive clear instructions and all the resources they need with regards to medications. TINA JOHNSON, RN Emergency Department – Cary Hospital Tina is a patient safety and performance improvement champion in so many areas. From her efforts to reduce falls in the ED to her tireless work on the systemwide sepsis committee, or focus on clinical results documentation, she is always looking to improve performance on the unit. Her falls prevention initiative helped reduce falls from 2-4 per month to just four in six months! Similarly, her attention to sepsis bundle compliance led to significantly less sepsis fallouts. As a supervisor/educator, she has an open door policy, promotes transparency, admits mistakes and uses any errors as a learning opportunity to improve. OMAR SAIDYKHAN 3C Rehab Nursing Patients who have the benefit of being assigned to Omar never have to use their call bells because he is proactive and attentive to their needs. Omar helps prevent UTIs and pressure ulcers by adhering to protocols and going above and beyond. He is known for making lists of improvement ideas and sharing those suggestions with leadership. In one instance, he developed an innovative way to transfer a patient using the Hoyer lift – taking that patient’s unique injuries into consideration. He created a handout with photos for other care team members to ensure the patient was transported safely each and every time. STEPHANIE SCHLAKE, RN 3B CVSIC Stephanie has a passion for teamwork and her positive energy encourages others. She serves on both the Nursing Staff Quality Improvement (NSQI) Committee and Peer Review team and is always striving to learn something new. Her work with Peer Review has helped her teammates understand that it’s not a punitive process, but a way for staff to be the best they can be for our patients. Stephanie demonstrates the importance of delving into a patient’s chart to determine what could have been done differently to get a better outcome. She is known for going the extra mile for her patients. NIK DELLAROCCA Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace – North Hospital Nik never passes a room with a call light on because she knows every WakeMed patient is her responsibility. Patients remember Nik for her gentle, soft-spoken and serving nature. She never rushes and takes extra good care of her patients – whether it’s offering a shampoo or a listening ear. Leadership rounds and safety rounding reiterate her exceptional performance and adherence to policies – protocols are always in place on Nik’s patients. She frequently precepts new employees and has been referred to as a “true angel on earth.” Extraordinary Team WakeMed is dedicated to attracting and retaining the most passionate and talented physicians and workforce while developing world-class leaders. The recipients in this category go above and beyond to help us reach this goal. TORRIAN ADAMS Heart & Vascular - Cardiology As a medical assistant working in a very busy cardiology practice, Torrian regularly steps up to take on additional responsibilities, while managing her core job functions, too. FELICIA BELLOccupational Therapy

After 26 years as a clinicalaide, Felicia Bell is a wealthof knowledge, wisdom andgrace. With training innumerous advancedtherapy areas, Feliciaassists therapy teams in the1D gym and also helpstrain new aides. Staff know

they will have all the supplies andequipment needed to deliver therapybecause Felicia makes sure of it. With asmile on her face every day, patients ask forher by name. She can constantly be seengoing above and beyond to keep patientscalm and comfortable during therapy – andeven was the first to respond to a Code Bluewhile on her lunch break.

HOLLIE BOSWELLInvasive Cardiology

Known as the voice ofreason during times of highstress, Hollie wears manyhats in the Heart Center.While she leads invasivecardiology, she’s also beensupporting the non-invasive cardiology teamon an interim basis – in

addition to her role as the Epic CupidChampion and a Communication inHealthcare training facilitator. Even with aheavy workload, Hollie supports thosearound her. Focused on performanceimprovement and best practice standards,Hollie works closely with cardiologyproviders to explain changes reflectingevidence-based guidelines. Her keeninsight on what makes the cath lab functionwell and her selfless attitude set her apart.

JOSEPH BURKE, RNMedical ICU

Joseph is the ultimate teamplayer. He is often seenencouraging his coworkersor asking how he can help.Joseph frequently coverspatient care duties whilehis colleagues are eatinglunch or taking a break. Heis revered on the unit as a

ASHLEY COXSurgery & Trauma

A dynamic team player,Ashley supports theSurgery team and herpatients alike – treatingpatients, families andcoworkers with dignity andrespect. She’s the “go-to”resource for clinical issuesand she works tirelessly to

support multiple office locations. In oneinstance, she went above and beyond tosupport a patient with a very complexhealth history who wanted a secondopinion. After working diligently to collectall medical records, she facilitated adifficult referral process to ensure thepatient got the care they needed.

PEGGY DUNSTONEnvironmental Services – Raleigh Campus

Peggy is a warm,welcoming face on 4C –Mother/Baby – alwaysensuring the unit andpatient rooms are cleanand tidy. She spends timewith patients to make theirstay more enjoyable – andis frequently recognized

during nurse leader rounding. Her keenability to recognize patient’s needs led herto connect personally with a patient whohad experience fetal loss. Peggy not onlyprovided a listening ear, she took the timeto bring flowers. This is just one example ofthe many lasting impressions Peggy leaveson the patients of 4C – Mother/Baby.

TRACI FOXPhysical Therapy

As manager of AcuteRehab, Traci is an advocatefor both her patients andher staff. She leads withher heart and is well-respected by her team.Traci understands thatengaged and happy staffmembers lead to better

care and patient outcomes. She alwaysmakes time for her staff and strives torepresent fairness and equity at all times.Staff members receive handwritten notesand cards – she makes her team feelimportant every day. When her team isshort-staffed, Traci steps in to provide directpatient care to help keep things moving –all while balancing her many leadershipresponsibilities.

MARIA GARCIAPhysical Therapy

Maria is a physicaltherapist who workstirelessly for her patients –both during therapy andafter they’ve left. Shepetitions insurancecompanies to be surepatients have theequipment they need after

discharge. Patients often return to thankher after they’ve finished therapy – or torequest her for future therapies. She isdescribed as honest, kind and empathetic –someone who’s always willing to assist herco-workers. Maria can often be foundteaching an in-service to help staffunderstand the unique nature of spinalcord injuries, or presenting at a nursingeducation series to share her knowledge.

LORI GUPTONOccupational Therapy

Lori is well-known aroundthe Raleigh Campus – shehas a big, welcoming smilethat some say makesWakeMed a brighter place.The unwavering respect ofher team is apparentthrough their manycomments. “This is the best

job I’ve ever had because of Lori.” Anothersays “She’s the best supervisor I’ve everhad.” She’s revered for being open andhonest, a great communicator and aconstant encourager. Dedicated toWakeMed, her patients and her team, shegoes above and beyond to care for thosearound her. One shared a heartwarmingexample of an employee’s personal tragedywhere Lori ensured the coworker was well-cared for and supported through a verydifficult time.

CHRISTINA GUZMAN, RNChildren’s Emergency Department

Christina is committed tothe Wake Way 2 Excellenceand is commonly workingon numerous performanceimprovement projects at atime. Whether it’s her workon systemwide committees,her interdepartmentalcollaboration to improve

flow between the Children’s ED and theChildren’s Hospital, or her work on posterpresentations for regional and nationalnursing conferences, her efforts make adifference in the lives of patients. Hercontributions have helped decreaseadmitted patient wait times and improveoverall lab turnaround times in theChildren’s ED. She’s a role model for herpeers and precepts new staff. Christina’sprofessionalism and enthusiasmencourages others to get engaged andinvolved.

KIM HALES, RNChildren’s Emergency Department

Kim is recognized by co-workers as an outstandingteam member who canmake their day, every day.Her positive attitude andenthusiasm makes her theperfect preceptor for newstaff – a role where shetakes the time to provide

constructive feedback while also being acheerleader to help new nurses grow theirskills. As a certified sexual assault nurseexaminer, she has collaborated withSafeChild to follow up on high-risk patientsand ensure best practices are alwaysfollowed. Patients and families mentionKim by name and appreciate her diligence.She serves as chair of the department’ssocial committee and works as chargenurse.

SHARON HEWETT3C Rehab Nursing

Referred to as the “guidinglight at the front desk” of3C Rehab, Sharonexemplifies the Wake Way.As the clinical secretaryand nurse aide for the unit,she greets visitors with asmile and walks them totheir destination. If a call

light goes on, Sharon responds. She may beseen handing out meal trays or cleaningrooms to help the team. Committed toexcellence, Sharon has identified ways toreduce linen waste and stepped up to helpwith the unit’s Optiflex scanningcompliance. She compiles patient feedbackfrom discharge interviews to make 3C apositive environment for all patients.

DALE HILLRegional Trauma Program

Dale is the ultimateprofessional who neverwavers in his honesty,ethics or commitment todoing the right thing forWakeMed and thecommunity. His role asregional traumacoordinator is of critical

importance and he is well-respectedthroughout WakeMed, the region and thestate through his work with hospital staff,EMS first responders and the NorthCarolina Office of Emergency Management.In addition to these critical roles, Daleoversees the Medical Simulation Centerwhere he led his team through thetransition from LearningLink toWakeMedU. He supports not only thoseteammates who report to him but serves asa sounding board for his leadership team.

RENEE HOYLE-THAKERPathology Labs

As manager of PathologyLabs, Renee is known asthe cheerleader of thedepartment – organizingevents such as Lab Weekrecognition and the HeartWalk. She is committed toperformance improvementand has made significant

strides in improving lab safety and reducingturnaround times. During months of beingunderstaffed, Renee maintained highemployee morale all while avoiding the useof overtime whenever possible. She’sknown for her out-of-the-box thinking –which led to a redesign of lab space forgreater efficiency. Renee is known as anexcellent communicator who maintainshigh standards for herself and her team.

SUE HUTTER, RN6B Acute Neuro Care

Sue takes pride in her workand colleagues say it’s anhonor to have her on theteam. She is tenacious ingetting her patients theservices they need.Whether it’s a follow-upappointment or consult,Sue doesn’t stop until her

patients are well taken of. As a strongpatient advocate, she spends time poringthrough medical records to get her factsstraight and always questions if somethingdoesn’t look quite right. Neurocare is anintense field – Sue is careful, cautious andobservant – which is just what our fragilepatients need in a nurse.

Dana is well-knownthroughout the system forher commitment to theWW2E and Kaizen work.She commits toperformance improvementwhile balancing herpractice management role– and is always there when

her team needs her. Dana is a role modeland serves as a go-to resource throughoutWakeMed Physician Practices – because sheloves her job and it shows. Her staffdescribes her as approachable, honest andhard-working. In addition, when she wasrecently tapped to help get a new clinic setup in another service line, she stepped up totake on the challenge with a smile.

MATHILDE KUBIC, CNSClinical Nursing Resource Services

Mathilde is a Clinical NurseSpecialist who is focusedon supporting pulmonaryand geriatric patientsthroughout the system.Known for her expertclinical knowledge,Mathilde mentors newnurse leaders, encouraging

them to take on new roles and leadershipresponsibilities. Mathilde builds trust andtakes time to get to know those around her.Among the many, many initiatives she hasled or supported include the 5C mobilityproject, reduction in CLABSIs and sacralskin pressure ulcers, minimizing improperblood culture collection techniques andmore. She leads the Geriatric Care andTracheostomy Committees and is knownfor her exceptional communication skills.

KIM LEACHPharmacy – Cary Hospital

Kim is patient and kind andspends a great deal of timetraining new staff andstudents, providing extrasupport whenever andwherever needed. Shetreats coworkers withrespect and is eager toassist by stepping in when

short-staffed, assisting with buyer duties onthe weekends to ensure orders are placedwith distributors. She ensures medicationsdon’t get wasted by letting leadership knowwhen and if par levels need to be adjustedto avoid drugs expiring before use. Aneffective communicator, Kim asks relevantquestions, thinks outside the box andrelates problems or opportunities tomanagement.

CAROLYN MARTIN, RN1A Clinical Evaluation Area

As a night-shift chargenurse, Carolyn upholdsbest practices, advocatesfor her patient’s needs andis always accountable. Shepromotes and embraceschange and serves as apositive role model amongher team. Carolyn makes

her patients feel at home and treats themlike family. She’s often found decoratingthe unit as seasons change to keep thingsfeeling festive for patients and staff. Topromote teamwork and a sense ofcommunity, Carolyn worked with CaseManagement to coordinate a fundraiser fora family in the community who had losteverything. Her empathetic, kind heartpromotes positivity and teamwork.

ALBERTO MARTINEZ CRUZEnvironmental Services – Raleigh Campus

As a former EVS technicianwho was promoted to thedepartment’sadministrative assistant,Alberto supports the teamin so many ways. Whetherhe’s assisting with thetransition to a newchemical cleaning process,

helping with training and auditing orstepping in to support the team bymonitoring the discharge board to ensurepatient’s needs are met, Alberto can becounted on to lend a hand. His attention todetail and smiling, friendly demeanor makehim a memorable part of the team. He’sopen and honest and always willing toadmit if he makes a mistake – workingquickly to address it head on.

INDIA MASON, RN3C Rehab Nursing

India knows her patientsare individuals and treatseach one as if they’re heronly patient. She is an

excellent time managerand her efficiency allowsher to support the rest ofthe team when they needhelp. Praised by numerous

nurse techs as their favorite nurse, shealways pitches in with whatever is needed.Case managers have noted how preparedshe is in interdisciplinary team conferences.India defines excellence in nursing care, isfocused on positive outcomes and worksdiligently to keep her patients safe. Herhumble commitment to doing the rightthing contributes to the overall spirit ofteamwork on the unit.

CAITLIN MASTERSSpeech Therapy

Leslie advocates for herpatients, including appealing insurancecompanies, and some of her patients drivefor an hour or more to receive therapy fromher. Leslie spent hours optimizing Epicdocumentation for all therapists and takestime to mentor new staff.

MARY LEWIS JAMESOccupational Therapy

Al Smith is the only ITpharmacist supporting thesystemwide pharmacy, andit’s a BIG job. Committedto responding to allrequests within 24 hours,Al travels to work on Pyxismachines at variousfacilities at the drop of a

hat. He is polite, attentive and helps trainnew staff, working overnight on manyprojects to minimize staff disruptionsduring the busy workday. He pushes ourpharmacy technology vendors to makeimprovements and he solves problemsbefore they become too big. This past year,Al has supported upgrades to 40+ Pyxismachines, 32 anesthesia Pyxis machines,the relocation of major equipment and theinstallation of three new medicationcarousels.

Derrick is well-knownthroughout the system forhelping departments gainefficiencies through theuse of technology. Knownas the PolicyTech expertfor several years, he isknowledgeable andsupports his coworkers in a

highly professional manner. He also helpedWakeMed adopt a new technology calledSmartsheet and he taught, supported andencouraged users across the system.Through this initiative, he supportedconverting a highly manual process to acompletely digital process – saving time andmoney while ensuring accountability,legibility and accuracy. During his yearsworking in Environmental Health & Safety,he implemented software systems thatallowed the team to track and coordinatehundreds of tours and drills throughout thesystem.

between. management. Over the past year, Abbieplayed an integral role in implementingWakeMed’s new Infectious PharmacyResidency program. Getting approval andthe budget to pay for new positions can bechallenging, so Abbie got creative, workingwith team mates to apply for a grant fromthe WakeMed Foundation to fund the firstyear of the program. Creating this programhelped provide an additional 1,500 hourseach year for antibiotic stewardshipprograms, which will help reduce hospital-acquired infections, like C. difficile.

help get WakeMed’s pediatric heart surgeryprogram up and running. Ashley’s effortsreally helped increase staff’s comfort levelworking with children – taking the teamfrom anxious about working with kids toexcited about the opportunity. As a registered dietitian,Trish puts patients first.Trish works with bariatricpatients and helps thosestruggling with eatingissues that often go farbeyond the food on theirplate. Compassionate andempathetic in her

counseling, patients drive hours to see herinstead of their local dietitian because theytrust her. When Trish attended an ObesityWeek conference, she learned about howbariatric patients are showing vitamin andmineral deficiencies that can cause serioushealth concerns. She took it upon herself toeducate our bariatric surgery offices on thesupplements needed to help their patients.

Staffknow her door is always open for concernsor support – and that she will always lend alistening ear and respect their privacy. As a leader, Regina workshard to put together anexceptional team of thosewith a common goal oftaking excellent care of ourpatients, providers andfellow staff members. She’sa firm believer thateverything rises and falls

Regina knows confusion can breedfrustration, so she’s developed a daily“State of the Office” email within primarycare that includes everything the teamneeds to know related to office operationson any given day. taken on interim leadership for 2E CVICand has worked countless hours to supportboth units and teams. On any given day,you may see Ellen feeding families with nofood, sitting with patients who have no oneelse or spending hours finding care for apatient’s abandoned animal. A forwardthinker, Ellen has helped improve CTICUextubation rates, reduced central linedelays, reduced CLABSI and CAUTI ratesand supported WakeMed’s nationally-recognized ERAS Cardiac program forsurgical patients.

On October 21, WakeMed honored all of our 2019 Pyramid Society Awardrecipients with an awards reception at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley.Award recipients and their guests, along with their supervisors and membersof our Board of Directors and our executive team, enjoyed dinner and anawards presentation led by WakeMed President & CEO Donald Gintzig andExecutive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer DeniseWarren.

Special Recognition:Shawn Hamlet Award

At the Pyramid Society Award Dinner and Reception,Donald Gintzig announced that WakeMed hasestablished a new award in honor of Shawn Hamlet,who passed away earlier this year. The Shawn HamletAward: Inspiring Others Through Service will be givenannually to a WakeMed employee who has overcomepersonal adversity and made an outstanding impact onour organization.

In this inaugural year, the award was given in honorand memory of ShawnHamlet himself. Shawn was abeloved and dedicated member of the WakeMedfamily, working in Food & Nutrition Services for 28years. Shawn was well known across Raleigh Campusand recognized for his welcoming smile and ability toremember the names of everyone he met. He went outof his way to greet every person he passed and had anincredible ability to make personal connections withhis colleagues and the patients and families we serve.Each day he was at work, Shawn went above andbeyond to bring warmth and joy to all he saw – alwaysperforming his role to the best of his ability. Shawn willbe greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through allthose who knew him.
