Harry Randall (1928-2009) - obituary

It is with great sadness that I report the death in August of Harry Randall.

Harry was 80 in May 2008 and up to then was regularly attending the Dorking Judo Club. When he felt able, he

would put on his judo gi and help with the younger players - yes, even at 80 years old! Harry started judo in his

30s at a judo club in Dorking and reached green belt at that time. That club was disbanded and he didn’t take up

judo again until his late 50s, in September 1986 when he joined the present day Dorking Judo Club, that was

established in 1984 by Richard Anderson. Having been called up as a paratrooper, in the 1950s, Harry never lost

his grit and determination to succeed in a task undertaken. Despite “Getting on a bit” and suffering from asthma,

he continued to study and practice judo and what is more, continued with contesting for his higher grades.

Despite major heart surgery in his 60s, within a very short time of recovery - around six weeks - he was back in

his judo suit, on the mat, offering to help with coaching judo, the sport to which he is dedicated. He continued to help both junior and senior judo players at the Dorking Judo Club, becoming an instructor in the early 1990s.

Harry also became a Table Official and Recorder in 1997, a vital role at judo competitions, and was frequently to

be seen officiating at major competitions in the Southern Area, including the Surrey Youth Games on many occasions. In 1994 Harry took up Kata – formal demonstration of precise judo techniques - with a fellow

instructor at the Dorking Judo Club, Peter Leach, and together took part in the National Championships. He was

awarded his Black Belt, (lst Dan Grade) in 1997 age 69. He is a wonderful example of the “Spirit of Judo” and was awarded the Spirit of Judo Award by the Dorking Judo Club in 1988.

Harry Randall embodies the qualities that we should be imparting to children and to sports people everywhere –

enjoy taking part, enjoy helping others to take part, do your best unstintingly to give and receive the best out of

your sporting activity, keep active right to the end – if you gain medals on the way, that is a brilliant bonus.

His son Tim Randall writes :

Dad was born on 6th May 1928 in London and was in the 9th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. He was a

keen cross-country runner and ran in the Regiment and used to keep a pet Chameleon in his tent in Palestine:

apparently it used to eat the flies! Dad loved his judo and really enjoyed not just the physical aspects, but also the history and etiquette associated

with the sport and martial art. He was also keen on just about any sport, and could always be found watching

football (a keen Arsenal fan having been born just around the corner from the stadium in Highbury), or the

athletics. I remember when he first started doing judo, he used to try and get me to come along too. I was very

young (about 10 or so I guess) and didn’t have the first idea what judo was. But he kept plugging away, and

eventually he and I pitched up at Dorking Judo Club not long after Richard and Jill had started the club. As they

say, the rest is history…

It’s also nice to see his leadership being reflected through the generations: not only did he get me into judo, but

now both my son and daughter are avid judoka; enjoying not just randori and kata but a degree of success in shiai

too. I hope that when my kids have children, they will guide their off-spring towards judo and thrill them with

stories of their Grandad and his judo antics.

The enduring lesson I learnt from Dad was one of sheer determination: if you want something enough, you’ll just

keep plugging at it. He also used to say that if something was easy to get, it’s not worth having which just about

summed him up.

Surrey Squad Intercounties

Congratulations to the Surrey Squad, with the Girls and Boys team taking Silver and the Men’s team taking 1st Bronze, just missing out narrowly on closely contested Silver. Well done to everyone who

competed.

Although this was a tough competition, there were some absolutely fantastic performances from all, with the juniors over coming some older and experienced fighters.

This was truly a team event with all players, club coaches and parents supporting the Surrey Squad. Thank you.

Next year we look forward to repeating the same successes with a Ladies team representing the county also.

Surrey Squad Select Reserves. Thank you to all the selected Squad reserves who came along prepared to fight and those who

actually fought. The squad could not be prepared to take the medals home without your support and while it can be frustrating that you don’t get to fight, it means injuries are minimal, which is good

news. Thank you

Surrey Squad Coaches

Thank you to Sonya Clarke (Pyrford) and Nicola Gray (Croydon) who coached on behalf of Katrina

McDonald, and took the Girls team to Silver at the Intercounties, while Simon Carlo and Lloyd

Nichols coached the Boys and Men to Silver and 1st Bronze.

Page 3: NEWS British Judo Association Surrey CountyLadies Gradings Recreational female players looking to grade should fill out the “Application for Information” in the newsletter

On a slightly more subdued note, at the Intercounties, all too often, advice could be heard being shouted at the squad players mat side. It’s important that the Squad Coaches can be clearly heard

and the players allowed to receive one set of clear instruction.

Junior Squad Training

The last event for Junior Squad training was 18th July 2009 at Croydon Judo Club, 2 – 4pm, and usual mat fee applied. This year we have returned the favour by inviting the Sussex Junior Squad to training with us at Croydon. This will provide a great opportunity, not only for a collaborative

approach to County training, but to allow the Surrey juniors to familiarise themselves with their peers and fellow competitors for future tournaments.

Senior Squad Training

There are Squad training sessions, at Yamabushi Kingston, every first Monday of each Month, 8 - 9.30pm, and usual mat fee applies. We look forward to seeing you there.

Future Squad Events The squad coaches are keen to build on the successes of the Intercounties with the emphasis on

technique, fitness, and development gained through continued training.

The responsibility is primarily on the individual to ensure they take every opportunity to train with

the squad but this will also be facilitated through a collaborative approach to training with other Counties as seen with Sussex. For this we need and request the support of the parents and clubs.

More will follow on this subject and the intention is that once we have the commitment, we can then look to build upon the frequency of events and schedule a yearly calendar.

Communications

In an attempt to save costs and do our small part for the environment we have created a Squad e-mail distribution list. If you have not been receiving regular e-mail updates reference Squad training, then you are not on the e-mail distribution list. Pleases send [email protected] an

e-mail, requesting your e-mail address to be added.

And finally…….

Well done once again to everyone who competed at the Trials and Intercounties and congratulation to the Surrey Squad. We look forward to seeing you all at future Squad training events and

competitions.

Donyngs Recreation Centre – please keep it tidy !

Please put the rubbish in the bins supplied or take it home

with you, and remember to take home your valuables!

Usual Plea for Volunteers to put out the mats !

Please remember that before every county judo event the mats

have to be laid out at Donyngs. It is always the same old

(yes some of us are getting on a bit) people

helping out. It only takes about an hour

when there are many people helping.

Always check out the Surrey website for

details of when the operation takes place the night before

a competition.

Are you a First Aider ?

The county would like to build on their team of first

aiders available at judo events. There are always many

present at the county events as all BJA coaches are

qualified, but we would like to spread the work load.

If you are interested fill out the “Application for

Information” form in the newsletter.

Table Officials / Referees

MILLENNIUM LEAGUE

PARENTS CAN WIN POINTS FOR THEIR CLUB !

Points are awarded to NEW VOLUNTEER OFFICIALS who assist at the

League events for Table work, Time Keeping, Scoring or Medical (if

qualified). This bonus only applies to those who officiate and are not already

qualified competition officials. The points to be awarded are as follows.

Volunteer officiating at any League events = 5 bonus points

Volunteer officiating at all 4 League events = additional bonus 5 points

Maximum number of volunteers per club at any event = 2

Maximum number of bonus points available to any one club = 50 points

In order to claim these points each volunteer must report to the control table

on the day of the event, prior to the tournament commencing.

Any queries regarding the above please contact either Graham Beagley,

Sheila Hearsey, or Andrew Scarsbrook.

Have you ever thought about

becoming a Table Official or a

Referee for the County?

If you would like more details

please talk to one of the BJA

committee members, or fill out the

form below. The most important

attribute to have is plenty of

enthusiasm!

Note that the county is always in

danger of cancelling its Judo

events due to an insufficient

number of officials being

available, so if you can spare some

time you will be helping to keep

Judo a thriving sport within

Surrey.

** Juniors **

If you train as a

table official at

the Millennium

League you will

pick up points for

your club!!
