Coordinator’s Report
PAGE 2 BEAUFORT ST COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS TERM 4 , 2015
This has certainly been a big term for us and next term looks like being even bigger.
Probably the biggest news was receiving the Lotteries West grant to purchase the Sweet
Sixteen quilting machine. With thanks to Handcrafters’ House, Gia and Pauline (who put the grant application together) the new machine has been purchased and members of the Stash
Busters group are busy learning to master it. (It is not the most convenient of machines – I think it was invented by a man.) Next term we will be quilting the dozen quilts currently
waiting so it should be a good Christmas for some women in refuges.
In another big piece of news we were runner-up to Norwood Community Centre in the CAST
award for the best unfunded community centre. Thanks to Linkwest for their support (and our nomination) and to Zan who accepted the award on our behalf. Thanks also to Cherryl P
and Brad who also attended the Linkwest conference on our behalf. Everyone has brought
back great ideas for the Centre.
It was great to see such huge community involvement in Zan’s 1000 Origami Cranes for Peace project to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
Contributions from the Beaufort St Centre and the Japanese classes at Mt Lawley Senior High as well as fantastic contributions from our members, especially Zan and Sunita, meant
that the target was well exceeded.
A huge “thank you” to Penny and Jim for hosting our Long Table Lunch and Airing of the Quilts at their magnificent property in Gidgegannup. We were blessed with a beautiful
Spring day; the quilts all looked fantastic on the tennis court; the food was great and it was so good to see men attending. Thank you to all members who worked so hard to make the
day such a success.
As part of our contribution to those less fortunate in our community Sunita has undertaken
to coordinate our “Share the Dignity” project. If there is anyone who has not discovered the box just near the door to the crèche we are collecting pads and tampons for homeless
women and women in refuges. To those who have already contributed please keep up the
good work.
Our Facebook page now has over 300 likes!! In a further effort to use social media to promote the Centre we are now on Instagram as well, thanks to Brooke for setting it up and
to Melinda (and her daughters) who helped to link it to our Facebook page. Melinda has volunteered to be our Instagram “person” so all classes are invited to send photos to Lindsay
to be passed on to her. Check us out on Instagram if you have not already done so!
Although some classes offered did not go ahead it is great to see that there has been such a smooth transition in the Fitness classes after Laurie retired due to illness. It is good to hear that she is well on the way to recovery but special thanks to Leanne for a wonderful job in
taking over the classes. Thank you, too, to Liz and the ladies in the Creche for the most
successful term in a long time.
Next term will be equally huge. Thank you to Zan for a wonderful and packed program with
lots of new offerings. In addition we have our two big fundraisers; the Garage Sale Trail and the Beaufort St Festival. If these two are as successful as last year the Centre will be in
great financial shape for the first time in many years.
Finally welcome to all our new members and thank you to everyone who has contributed this
term. As a volunteer-run, unfunded centre we always rely on our members to make the centre a success. It does not matter if we are not the largest; I like to think that we are the
friendliest centre around.
Rachel

HELP YOUR HEART BY GETTING ACTIVE Recent research has added a further tick to the list of exercise benefits, discovering that a specific hormone re-leased during exercise makes the heart function better. The US study found that irisin, a hormone that surges when the heart and other muscles are exerted, has prov-en to have numerous positive effects on the heart. The research found that irisin elevates levels of calcium with-in cells, which is vital for heart contractions, and increases metabolism in mitochondria, the part of a cell that supplies energy for a variety of heart functions. According to Professor Yang, these findings all point to the ben-efit of irisin for overall heart health. She explains that ‘increased calcium and cellular metabolism make the heart work better, and when your heart is working better, you feel better’. Physical activity is the easiest and most efficient way to stimulate irisin’s beneficial effects. The Australian government’s Physical Activity Guidelines stipulate that adults should partake in 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity each week.
I look forward to assisting each of you with your health and fitness goals. Leanne Rigby

‘How To Improve Your Relationship/Marriage By Talking About It’
presented by Ranka Joyce, counsellor/psychotherapist (MCounsel, M.A.C.A. level 3)
Based on the book; ‘How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It’ by Dr Pat Love and Dr Steven Stosny this workshop draws on the latest research to uncover some of the
truths about why talking to your partner about what is not working in a relationship, will not only not work, but could result in greater feelings of more disconnection.
The workshop is divided in 2x3hr sessions and will examine how our biological differences can complicate our communication and shape responses, leading us into old patterns and
stereotypical roles.
This interactive and entertaining workshop will teach great connecting skills that empower the participants to learn to work as a team, defuse the negativity and understand our own vulnerabilities. In the process, participants learn how to become closer in their relationship
and connect more intimately and honestly with their partner.
This workshop is psycho-educational in its nature and suitable for both individuals and couples to attend.
