Blue Water News | No. 96 | April 2011

In the spring of 2010, our optimism grew with the increasing level of activity within Blue Water, and so did our hope for a sof-tening of the crisis we all experienced in the second half of 2008 and throughout 2009. “Our crisis” was in particular re-lated to Denmark and the offices abroad which are based on traditional transport of industrial cargo, whereas the offices concentrating on niche activities – oil, gas, wind industry, project cargo and food products - were only slightly affected. We are therefore extraordinarily happy to see that the areas, where we have worked hard on different adjustments, have taken a very favourable course and contributed to very fine bottom line figures. In return, the crisis hit a few of our offices abroad with some delay. These were the offices dependent on the situation in the energy sector and consequently running in low gear. This also applies to some of our offices mainly involved in food trans-port and very much influenced by the market conditions including the political situation.

Major initiatives include:

A 2-year contract (2011-13) with Da- nish Defence for the transport mainly to/from Northern America. The contract is expected to involve several of our Danish and American branch offices.

An initiative of great success in 2010 was the establishment of Blue Water Port Ser-

vices. This new activity, based in Esbjerg, offers loading/discharging of vessels in all Danish ports, service and installation in connection with wind turbine ship-ments for Siemens Wind Power A/S.

Bestseller has become a very big client on parcel distribution to Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, the North Atlan-tic and Denmark. We have established a special parcel department in Esbjerg dealing with app. 6 million parcels per year.

Other major initiatives include the open-ing of branch offices in Shanghai, China and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil mainly focus-ing on projects within the oil, gas and wind energy sector. We hope these initia-tives will bear fruit this year.

We decided to close our Hanstholm office and give priority to Hirtshals after Smyril Line changed port of call from Esbjerg/Hanstholm to Hirtshals on their service between Denmark and the North Atlantic.

In Esbjerg, we closely follow the construc-tion of our new headquarters (others may have a look at www.bws.dk) which we look forward to moving into in the middle of the summer.

At the turn of the year, the Blue Water Group employed 850 people in 26 coun-tries at 51 offices.

Status 2010In 2010, the financial result for Blue Water Holding A/S was a profit of DKK 38 million (EUR 5 million) before tax and a turnover of DKK 3 billion (EUR 400 million). As per 31.12.2010, the equity capital amounts to DKK 150 million (EUR 20 million).

Result 2010

2011 has started in a favourable way. On most fronts, business is progres- sing, and we have of course new initia-tives in the melting pot! We want not only Denmark, but all the Nordic countries to be our home ground. We will therefore strengthen our sea, air and road activi-ties and focus on a development of our offices in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

We are, however, not blind to the fact that natural disasters, like the ones we have seen recently in Japan, and the political disturbances in many countries in North-ern Africa and the Middle East may have a severe influence on the world economy – and our business!

I am very happy for the way we have sur-vived the financial crisis – and I am very satisfied with the financial result in 2010 – a doubling of the 2009 result. We have an exciting future ahead of us in Blue Water.

Kurt Skov

Jørn Bøllund, who turns 65 in August, will re-tire this summer. Jørn has been part of Blue Water since the very start, and to many people, he is one of the most qualified representa t i -

ves for what we within the company call “the Blue Water spirit”. A team spirit that has made Blue Water what it is today – a company we are all so very proud of.From the start, Jørn and Kurt have been sparring partners, and Jørn has repre-sented Blue Water externally in many diffe-rent aspects. At the same time, his guidan-ce has internally left its mark on our young people right from their first job interview, as

Jørn Bøllund goes ashoreJørn’s field of responsibility for many years included the entire Blue Water staff. Mar-keting is another important field of Jørns through all the years. He is extremely good at composing texts and articles and has a special talent for word playing. We would never brag about claims and damages. However, if they do occur on rare occasions, transport law is also one of Jørn’s many fields of interest, and with a university degree in transport law, he is well equipped to deal with these problems. In recent years, Jørn has scaled down his daily duties, both internally and externally, in preparation for his retirement. He will therefore, with a clear conscience, pack his office when the rest of us moves into our new headquarters. However, we are pleased to inform that Jørn will not lose contact, as he will remain a member of the Blue Water Foundation Board of Directors, and he has also pro-

mised to be available for special tasks on an ad hoc basis. Jørn’s wife, Lillian, who for the recent 6 years has formed part of our reception team as service assistant, has decided to join him and retire on the same occasion, even though she is “much younger” than him! Now Jørn will benefit from her excel-lent service – at home and in their summer house on the island of Fanø. They will no doubt make frequent use of the summer house, and their grandchildren – Lea, Mia, Noah and Emilie – will be happy to spend even more time with their grandpa-rents in the future.

Blue Water will host a farewell reception on 17 June, 1400-1700 hours, in the Carlsberg Lounge at Blue Water Arena, and we look forward to welcoming as many as possible of Jørn’s business rela-tions and friends through almost 39 years.

Comfort at Sea International Shipping Partners Inc./ISP and Blue Water Shipping A/S have signed an agreement to market the ISP fleet of vessels to the offshore industry as floating hotel accommodations under the brand name ”Comfort at Sea”. The agreement covers the entire ISP fleet consisting of 23 ferries, cruise and hotel vessels. The fa-milies owning the shipping line, Clipper Group, are part-owners of several of the vessels. Initially, Blue Water Shipping’s marketing will focus on the five vessels with offshore experience.ISP has extensive knowledge in operating hotel vessels with offshore track records from the Mexican Gulf, where they sup-plied living quarters in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, and in Haiti for UN employees assisting the local communi-ties after the earthquake in 2010.ISP was founded in 1988 by Niels-Erik Lund who has operated his fleet for more than 20 years and maintained the hig-hest quality standard within all aspects of the business and is recognized as a dedi-cated operator of passenger vessels with the highest quality certification possible.Blue Water has provided services to the offshore industry for almost 40 years. Offshore wind turbines are today one of the core activities through a close co-operation with clients all over the world including the biggest manufacturers, operators and shipowners in the busi-ness. The combination of the two companies

will be a powerful brand in the industry, and our intention is to be the market lea-ders for this segment. ISP will keep the management of the ves-sels while Blue Water Shipping A/S will fo-cus solely on marketing through existing and new contacts. The web page www.comfortatsea.com has been established and brochures and presentations will be available through Blue Water Shipping A/S at various exhibitions and conferen-ces across Europe.

After updating and introducing the new Incoterms 2010 to all Blue Water forwar-ders in Denmark, it was time to arrange client seminars at Blue Water’s offices and at the clients’ own premises. For the internal introduction, we teamed up with Lise Bertelsen from Codan, Co-penhagen so that she could encourage our staff to take out more goods in tran-sit insurances on behalf of our clients. For the client seminars, however, lawyer Christian Muff and Jørn Bøllund had to stand on their own feet. The contents of the client seminars were more or less the same as for the staff

Terms and Conditions of Delivery between Seller and Buyer

Incoterms 2010seminars. A careful introduction of In-coterms 2010, to which several changes will apply compared to Incoterms 2000. Some terms are maintained whereas others have been changed, some are removed and two new ones have been added. Agreements about terms and conditions of delivery are in fact a mat-ter between buyer and seller, but the for-warders (and lawyers) are expected to be familiar with these terms. Naturally we studied the new Incoterms carefully be-fore our “road show” in January. Jørn Bøllund was – unintentionally of cour-se – responsible for planting scare stories

of the different situations the cargo owner may encounter if he/she fails to take out a goods in transit insurance – either with his/her own insurance company or preferably through Blue Water. The latest severe ship-wrecks have proved the necessity of such insurances similar to an all-risk insurance. The client seminars will continue through March/April and maybe even further. At the end of February, more than 500 cli-ents had passed through Blue Water’s Incoterms mill.

Blue Water, Fort Lauderdale has worked for ISP for several years and arranged all forms of transport of spare parts, food articles etc. to the vessels cruising in spe-cific waters - the Antarctic, Greenland, Svalbard etc.We have just succeeded in making the first agreement, as Siemens has char-tered the vessel “Sea Spirit” as floating hotel for an offshore wind farm in British waters as from 1 May for app. 6 months.

Oestship, Grenaa now part of Blue Water Shipping A/S

OestshipAnholt Offshore Wind Farm, Danish Biofuel and wind turbine projects to Sweden are just some of the headlines associated with Grenaa and Oestship - one of Blue Water’s latest additions. On 1.1, Blue Water took over Oestship and the staff of 3: Niels Laursen, Brian Johnsen and Frank Larsen. It has been an exciting experience for all of us, and we have received a very warm welcome, says the Oestship team, who has increased since the acquisition with the employment of shipping trai-nee Kristian Hald as from 1.2.Oestship was founded back in 1956 and through the years, it has been the local firm of shipbrokers in Grenaa. The first contact to Blue Water and Kurt Skov was established in the late eighties, when import of Russian fish from the Barents Sea was at its highest. Then fol-lowed project cargoes, in particular in connection with wind energy, which has been the focal point of mutual interests and business. Recent years’ major port extensions have made Grena an important player within the port and project sector. The-refore Blue Water wishes to be present here, which has become reality through the acquisition of Oestship. In cooperation with Blue Water, we are

now able to offer an extensive set-up to our present and future clients, explains shipbroker Frank Larsen, not least con-templating the many new players who will be coming to Anholt Offshore Wind

Farm and Danish Biofuel in the future. At Oestship, we are pleased with our many new, kind and competent collea-gues and look forward to jointly lifting the Grenaa office into another league.

Blue Water acquires Eurouter, AarhusEurouter A/S, founded in Aarhus in 1978 by Peter Hulgaard, has been acquired by Blue Water Shipping as of 17 January 2011.It has been the wish of Peter Hulgaard to gradually reduce his business career, and in that connection an agreement has been reached with Blue Water to take over the staff and carry on the activities.Eurouter offers all types of activities within transport and freight forwarding, which fit naturally in with Blue Water’s scope of activities. The company’s staff will move to Blue Water’s office in Søften north of Aarhus, where Blue Water has been located in new, modern office and warehouse fa-cilities since 2003. Here, 61 colleagues - dedicated to handling the clients’ trans-port needs to worldwide destinations by road, sea and air – are domiciled.

Blue Water opens an office at Lindø

On 1 February, Blue Water Shipping ope-ned an office at the former Odense Stål-

The development at Lindø is supported by LORC (Lindoe Offshore Renewables Center) with former Danish Prime Mini-ster Poul Nyrup Rasmussen as chairman. The mission is to establish 2,000 new jobs in the area within a 5-year period. With our own office in the newest de-velopment area on the island of Funen, Blue Water can offer its expertise from long-standing cooperations with busi-nesses in the wind turbine, offshore and heavy industry.Project Manager Bent Lange is in charge of the new department.

Blue Water awarded AEO CertificateOn 1 March, the Danish Tax and Customs Authorities (SKAT) presented Blue Wa-ter Shipping with an AEO certificate at the company headquarters in Esbjerg. With this certificate, we have gained yet another seal of approval.Through the standardisation of work flow, quality improvement in many areas and an update of the physical surroundings in fine cooperation with Jørgen Lützau Hes-selholdt and Bjarne Tønning of SKAT’s AEO team in Aarhus, Blue Water now fully meets the demands for Authorized Economic Operators. The AEO system is established and con-trolled by the EU Commission. The sy-stem is a counterpart to the American C-tpat system which was established after the tragic 9/11 terror attacks. Both systems are very important in the fight against terrorism and for the protection of the individual.

Blue Water is certified in Combined Customs Simplifications/Security and Sa-fety, which gives access to all the advan-tages of the system. In relation to customs matters, the certi-fication means fewer physical and docu-mentary examinations, priority order for control of shipments, choice of customs clearance facility, simplified declaration procedures, reduced data set for summa-ry declarations and option of prior notice of control. Further the certification gives an option to obtain a single authorisation to perform customs procedures across the EU, which in the long term may result in substantial competitive advantages. In addition, the certification gives a range of indirect advantages, as an AEO cer-tificate is a recognition of the company meeting certain demands for financial sol-vency and supply chain safety and that the company is recognized as a quality con-scious and trustworthy business partner.

Cooperation with Bulk Logistics Solutions Ltd.In connection with the growing demand for sea transport within Europe, Blue Wa-ter has increased its range of shortsea products to include transport of bulk car-go in containers. As from 1.1, we have made an agree-ment with bulk and container operator Bulk Logistic Solutions Ltd. (BLS), who have their own equipment for transport of bulk goods – sugar, corn, rice etc. - to the food industry. The products are loaded through 3-4 hatches on top of the container and dis-charging takes place from the rear end just like an ordinary silo truck. However, the bulk container offers a more flexible handling as it can be transported by sea, rail and road. At the end of 2010, Blue Water won a major contract for delivery of sugar to Denmark in 2011. BLS is the subcontrac-tor for the many containers and 3 special trailers which are required for delivering bulk cargo. We expect to extend our cooperation with BLS in 2011 to include their non-food division as well. This division has equip-ment for transport of for instance plas-tic granulate and powder in special tank containers - primarily transported by sea in Europe.

In December 2010, GeoSea’s installation barge ”Goliath” called at the port of Es-bjerg to wait for an improvement of the weather conditions at sea before depar-ture to Germany. Belgian company Geo-Sea is part of the DEME Group. After the stop in Esbjerg, Goliath sailed to the German town of Sassnitz, where it will be used to perform pile test of mono piles for the Baltic 2 (formerly Kriegers Flak) Wind Park, an offshore wind farm to be positioned in the Baltic Sea.

”Sea Worker” visiting Port of EsbjergOn 12.1, A2SEA’s modern jack-up barge entered the port of Esbjerg with the assi-stance of three tug boats. ”Sea Worker” is a jack-up barge specially equipped to operate in the offshore wind sector. In Esbjerg, it will undergo modifi-cations so that it will be ready to function as a foundation installation vessel for the world’s largest offshore wind farm ”Lon-don Array”.Blue Water acted as port agent and pro-vided stevedoring during ”Sea Workers” stay in the port of Esbjerg.

Colliers in EsbjergIn February, Blue Water was appointed agent for 8 colliers, of the Panmax class, shipping coal from Murmansk in Russia to two Danish power stations.Due to restrictions on draught in the port of Esbjerg, the colliers will first call at Aabenraa to discharge part of the cargo. This will make it possible for the colliers to subsequently moor at Esbjerg with ap-

prox. 44,000 tons coal for delivery to DONG.For non-sailors: The Panmax class inclu-des vessels of more than 60,000 dwt, measuring less than 32.31 metres across and less than 289.5 metres long – usually under 80,000 dwt, which is the size that is allowed to pass through the Panama Canal.

Offshore Modules for Wind TurbinesOver the course of 2010, Blue Water Shipping has handled logistics in connec-tion with wind turbine foundation lifting modules for Danish offshore company Løvenborg Industri A/S. The recently developed modules are utili-zed to lift wind turbine foundations from a horizontal to a vertical position. The assignment started back in the spring of 2010, when the 135 tons heavy modu-les were loaded onto specially modified

supply vessels, which had been fitted with a rail system to accommodate the heavy modules. At the end of November 2010, Blue Wa-ter demobilised one of the two modules and returned it to the manufacturer. Mo-dule loading was carried out by Blue Wa-ter Stevedoring, with road transport to the manufacturer being arranged by the oil & energy department at Blue Water Esbjerg.

At the end of 2010, Blue Water Shipping entered into an agreement with Dutch company SBM Offshore for all logistics in connection with the FPSO Cidade de Paraty project. SBM Offshore is a world leader in the FPSO market and very ac-tive in Brazil among other countries. The company dates back to 1965 and today the group employs more than 5,000 people worldwide. SBM Offshore has signed a contract with Petrobras for a twenty-year charter and operation of an FPSO for the Tupi Nor-deste development in the pre-salt area

FPSO from Singapore to Braziloffshore Brazil. The former VLCC M/T Theseus - 265.243 dwt - will be convert-ed into an FPSO (Floating Storage, Pro-duction and Off-loading).Currently, the vessel is located at the Kep-pel Shipyard in Singapore, where it will undergo major changes including hull conversion, fabrication and installation of a flare tower, helideck as well as part of the topside modules installation. Sche-duled to leave Keppel Shipyard in the first half of 2012, the vessel will head for Bra-zil where final fabrication and conversion will take place. The project is expected to take thirty months to complete and will involve se-veral of the Blue Water offices worldwide including Rio de Janeiro, Houston, Singa-pore, Rotterdam and Esbjerg.Having been awarded a project of this scale, yet again proves that Blue Water is fully capable of handling large and complex projects worldwide including the unique challenges in Brazil. In connection

Blue Water wishes to strengthen its sea & airfreight set-up in the Nordic countries. Increased focus from Blue Water’s own Nordic offices and increased activity from our worldwide partners to and from the Nordic countries have resulted in increa-sing sea & airfreight volumes to all Blue Water’s Nordic offices. We primarily see increasing volumes to and from Asia, and our new cooperation with SBS Worldwide in the USA has contributed to a hectic workday for our Nordic colleagues. In consequence, we have decided to for-tify Blue Water’s staff situation in all Nor-

dic countries and during recent months, we have endeavoured to strengthen the organisations in the countries concerned. “Within a very short time, we expect to have a new and stronger sea & airfreight organisation in Norway and Sweden”, ex-plains Jesper Hansen, who is responsib-le for Blue Water’s sea & air activities in the Nordic counties. “We will then direct focus to Finland and of course Denmark, which are experiencing a rapid develop-ment, and which countries we currently adapt to the increasing level of activity”, explains Jesper Hansen.

with this project, Blue Water’s IT depart-ment adapts and develops our Track and Trace System, Compass, to fit the exact needs of SBM Offshore’s project team. FPSO Cidade de Paraty is the second large project secured by Blue Water Ship-ping in Rio de Janeiro within the past six months. Brazil is a focus area of Blue Water, and with the highly qualified and dedicated staff at the Rio office, we are confident that we shall see more project awards in the near future. We are very proud to be selected project freight forwarder for this turnkey project by SBM Offshore and look forward to working together with the project team, proving them right in nominating Blue Water Shipping.

An ILN conference was held for all mem-bers in the weekend of 12-13 February. ILN is Blue Water’s groupage network in Cen-tral Europe. A large number of the German partners and almost all international members were present at the conference in Lahnstein near Koblenz.Blue Water was represented by Jonas Ahmed/Blue Water Odense, Thomas Jo-hansen Wexø/Blue Water Copenhagen and Bent Weidinger/Blue Water Kolding at the interesting and informative confer-ence. All participants were given a couple of sq.mtrs. to introduce themselves and our slogan was “The Gateway to the North”.

Big Assignment for Cruise & Marine Logistic Network

In November 2010, the cruise ship ”Carnival Splendor” had the misfortune to catch fire off the coast of Mexico. All passengers remained safe and the ship was towed to San Diego for a 38-day wet dock and later moved to San Francisco for an additional 20-day dry dock. The ship’s damages were extensive and emergency repairs had to be carried out to get the ship back in operation. Cruise & Marine Logistic Network was involved in the major project through Priano Marchelli, Genoa, Italy. Priano Marchelli and Blue Water are founding members of Cruise & Marine Lo-gistic network – see also www.marinelogi-sticnetwork.com.Blue Water, Fort Lauderdale was the recei-ving agent coordinating shipments to San Diego and San Francisco, among other things spare parts flown in from Europe – mainly from the shipyard, Fincantieri, in Italy where the ship was originally built. In total, 6 charters - four Boeing 747 and two Antonov 124-100 - were booked for the project. In addition, a number of other

”regular” shipments (approx. 700 tons in total) were airfreighted. An operation, one of our colleagues at Blue Water, Fort Lau-derdale – Roy Applegate – will never for-get as it resulted in him spending Christ-

Hectic Activity for Blue Wa-ter’s Cruise Team in Florida

In addition to the usual busyness in connec-tion with cruise logistics for our key client, Hol-land America Line, our office in Fort Lauder-dale, attending to the cruise lines, has for the last 6 months been extremely busy. The office staff has also increased considerably, as 10 colleagues now share the daily duties. In addition to the “Carnival Splendor” and “Oceania” projects – see the other articles on this page – we have succeeded in secur-ing the transport services to two new ships still in the building berth in Monfalcone and Genoa, Italy. The assignment covers door/door services including customs clearance of app. 225 teu to “Carnival Magic” and “Seabourn Quest”. Import and delivery to the ships will be taken care of by Priano Marchelli in Italy, our part-ner in the Cruise & Marine Logistic Network. In addition, we will also continue shipping supplies to m/v “Magic” while she is in Eu-ropean waters during the entire autumn sea-son.5 dry dock export and import operations with app. 200 teu to Carnival Cruise Lines and Oceania Cruise Lines in Freeport, Bahamas have been accomplished – and we look for-ward to being assigned additional dry dock operations in the autumn.

Transport for Oceania Cruise LinesIn January, Oceania Cruise Lines awar-ded the Cruise & Marine Logistic Network (C&MLN) a special project of transporting one AZI-POD propulsion system – a 110-ton unit – from Galveston, Texas to Mar-seilles, to a dry dock for the cruise ship “Seven Seas Mariner”. Blue Water and Priano Marchelli, Genoa – both founding members of C&MLN – were involved in the door-to-door project.Blue Water Houston assisted in finding a part charter vessel in the local area and in conducting negotiations with the ship-ping line.

The job was complicated because the AZI-POD was stored on a small island, at a Rolls Royce marine facility, under customs bond. After clearing the hurdles with customs in Galveston, we engaged Mammoet USA to move the AZI-POD from the storage faci-lity to the waiting barge for the short trip up to Houston. Upon arrival in Houston, we engaged a crane on a barge to lift the AZI-POD up to the BBC dock.Despite the freezing temperatures and a broken crane, the job was performed on time and in good order.

mas Eve in California instead of Florida. The operation continued until early March, and was a great success thanks to all par-ties involved.

Gulfood 2011They say that Gulfood in Dubai is the big-gest food fair in the world. It takes place every year and once again, we saw a record number of exhibitors and visitors. The Middle East market is a very impor-tant destination for a large part of the many reefer containers that we ship from the USA, South America, Europe and the Far East (45,000 teu in 2010). It was interesting to meet both clients and their consignees during the exhibition,

and to hear the latest news from the dif-ferent markets. Through its own office in Dubai, since 1991, Blue Water has for many years been involved in the market and has a lot of good contacts within the food industry in the entire Middle East.It was nice to meet some of the good old clients, who are still going strong, and also to see many new ones having a suc-cessful exhibition, says Rene van Belle/Blue Water Rotterdam and Frank Mad-sen/Blue Water Esbjerg.

Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami 2011Again this year, Blue Water and other part-ners in the Cruise & Marine Logistic Net-work – Priano Marchelli, Southampton Freight Services and Tefra Travel Logistics – were represented at Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami. The exhibition was a great success, and our booth attracted lots of visitors – both shipowners, the shipowners’ suppliers and other business relations. Our booth was part of the Danish sec-tion together with exhibitors from Danish Cruise & Ferry Group - a subdivision un-der the Danish Exporters’ Association. Blue Water’s exhibition department was also present at the exhibition. Transport and onsite logistics for the exhibitors from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Holland and Germany were performed in co-op-eration with our colleagues in Ft. Lauder- dale. From a transport point of view, the ex-hibition was therefore also a great success for Blue Water, handling in total 4 contai-ners and a minor quantity of airfreight.

WWPC Conference in Mumbai, IndiaThe annual conference of the project freight forwarders’ association (World Wide Project Consortium / WWPC), of which Blue Water is a member, took place in late January. In this connection, Kurt Skov seized the op-portunity to travel a bit around India, as it was his first time in the country.

Windpower KoreaThe first professional wind power exhibi-tion in South Korea “Windpower Korea” was held in Changwon City from 25-28 November 2010. Blue Water was repre-sented by Arne Iversen from Blue Water Shanghai and Kenneth Ruby Sørensen from Blue Water Singapore, who took the opportunity to find out how the local wind power production is developing.South Korea does not have a long history for manufacturing wind turbines. Since 2006, however, more than a handful of new players have emerged, including some of South Korea’s industrial con-glomerates with leading global positions within heavy industries such as shipbuil-ding, power plant development, con-struction etc. After the exhibition, we paid visits to some of these companies, among others Hyun-dai Heavy Industries Co., which is now the world’s largest shipbuilding company

and since 2008 active in the wind turbine industry as well. Today, the company has its own production of wind turbines, with capacities of 1.65 MW, 2 MW and 2.5

MW respectively, and with an ambition to be among the top 5 wind turbine produ-cers worldwide in 2015.

India belongs to the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and is experien-cing a rapid development - for the trans-port industry, in particular within the field of projects. It therefore seemed natural to call on the local companies and explore their capacity within this specific segment of the transport business. As Flyjac is our agent in India for general sea and air-freight, a visit to their office was naturally given high priority. The conference was used for exchanging ideas and know-how, cultivating old relati-ons and establishing new ones. Socialising was also part of the programme – and we would like to thank the local members of WWPS – Hindustan Cargo, SahilGroup and Express Cargo – who had each made a fantastic arrangement for their indivi-dual evening events. Qualified and pro-fessional project forwarders, with whom I also had some very interesting meetings.

In the autumn of 2010, Jesper Nielsen/Blue Water Copenhagen and Ole Haahr Hansen/Blue Water Billund paid visits to Cargo Services in China – first their Beijing office and then Shanghai and Hong Kong. We have a partnership with Cargo Services, China through more than 10 years and are pleased that the cooperation grows with every year. The latest addition is our Scan Pack service, where packing directly to the end-user in Europe takes place at Cargo Services‘ warehouse in China, resulting in large cost savings after arrival in Europe. Blue Water is the first partner in Europe to introduce this service. Together with some of our good customers and partners, we saw the warehouse in Shanghai, where the goods are packed. We met among others Ron Huan, who is in charge of the airfreight in China, and Kevin Lam, Ringo Cheung and Johnny Yu from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing respectively. We have worked together with them all for a long time, and they are familiar with our business – and

they all provide invaluable support to our daily work.

Cargo Services latest acquisition, is the majority of shares in their biggest partner in Europe, the large British freight for-warding company Allport Ltd. This means that Blue Water still has an independent partner in China and our cooperation has increased to include all the Scandi-navian countries as well. Our working relationship with Allport dates as far back as the one we have with Cargo Services – through our coopera-tion in Far East Cargo Line, our common sea freight network. As Allport is also re-presented in most Asian countries, we are in the process of streamlining our part-ner network so that we will be working as much as possible together with Cargo Services/Allport Group

Having visited China, Ole and Jesper parted and one travelled to Vietnam,

the other to Taiwan. Vietnam is a very interesting country undergoing a fast economic development. The production of many articles has now moved from China to Vietnam, and we see a hea- vily increased trade and demand from our clients for service to/from Vietnam, says Ole Haahr. We therefore called on Allport Vietnam and SME Logistics – our partners on ge-neral industrial goods and projects re-spectively - both with an active and com-petent staff. Vietnam will for sure become an even more important part of our Asian network in future.

Jesper Nielsen went to Taiwan to talk to our airfreight partner, Circle Dragon Ex-press. An exciting visit to one of our grow-ing business areas, for which we have high hopes in 2011. During his stay, Jesper also paid visits to Speedmark (Far East Cargo Line agent) and a number of interesting clients.

We have recently secured a shipment for our newest client, Favelle Favco Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. – in Europe also known as Kroll Cranes. The job in-cluded transport of part of a pedes-tal crane – internally known as deck sitting and deck frame - with a total weight of 150 tons.Dimensions:Deck sitting: L – 12.42 m x W – 7.16 m x H – 4.19 m - Weight: 135.5 tonsDeck frame: L – 10.0 m x W – 7.0 m x H – 4.0 m – Weight: 15.9 tonsTransporting oversized cargo is always a challenge, and this time it was tricky as the route planned has a 90 degree turn. But we managed to execute the job without any problems, reports Al-lan David from Malaysia.

New Assignments in MalaysiaIn cooperation between Blue Water Sin-gapore, Esbjerg and Malaysia, we have successfully performed the shipment of 6 boom sections from Port Klang to Bremer-haven for Maersk Drilling. The shipper was our new client Favelle Favco Sdn.Bhd.

Together with our colleagues in Singapore, chartering of a roro vessel from Hoegh Autoliners was arranged. The boom sec-tions were collected from shipper’s facili-ties, trucked to the port, loaded on to low-loaders and rolled on board the vessel.

At the end of 2010, Blue Water Brest in cooperation with Blue Water Singapore arranged the handling, transshipment and final delivery of a 90’ Catamaran ferry from Fremantle, Australia to Aqaba in Jordan. The assignment was given to us through a long-term friend and former reefer owner, Mr. Faisal Assaf, who now works for Arab Bridge Maritime. Shipping the catamaran was made com-plex due to an added transshipment and short storage period in Singapore while waiting for the connecting vessel. On 21.12, the catamaran ”Babel” reached its final destination of Aqaba in Jordan, where it will be put in on the ferry service between Jordan and Egypt.

On 12.1, Blue Water Brest was invited to a round-table discussion at Bretagne Plants – an organisation of which many Breton potato growers are members. The topic of the meeting was “how to improve the logistics chain”.Blue Water was specifically invited to speak about conventional reefer ship-ment of large quantities of seed pota-toes on pallets in combination with other means of transport – trucks, containers and for instance rail wagons. It was a very interesting day, with plenty of opportunity to exchange experience

Once again, our colleagues in Blue Wa-ter France decided – through a democra-tic vote – on a skiing weekend for their annual company excursion. This time to Cauterets – a little cosy place in the Pyre-nees – from 19-20 March. As usual, our French colleagues had a fantastic weekend with good food, per-fect skiing weather and lots of snow. On 16.2, Blue Water’s headquarters in Esbjerg received a visit from the Belgian Ambassador in Copenhagen, Jean-Fran-cois Branders, the ambassador’s wife, two Investment & Trade Commissioners and the Belgian Consul for the South Jutland region, Lars C. H. Engel, Haderslev. Jørn Bøllund gave the delegation a short introduction to Blue Water’s background and present worldwide set-up – covering the activities, customer focus, growth po-tential and IT competences.

Visit from the Belgian Ambassador

On the staircase – left to right: Mrs. Branders, Jørn Bøllund, Ambassador Jean-Francois Branders and Investment & Trade Commissioner Daniel de Patoul, Behind, left to right: Investment & Trade Commissioner Jos de Clerq, Søren Stougaard and the Belgian Consul for the South Jutland region, Lars Engel.

Next on the agenda was an informative tour of the harbour by Søren Stougaard, where the wind turbines proved to be a big hit. The four gentlemen and the lady showed great interest in our company and wanted us to know that the embassy would be pleased to contribute to strengthening the working relationship with us. Belgium has more to offer than the contacts already established with the country, our guests pointed out.

With the aim of maintaining the global market leader position and creating thousands of new jobs, Denmark will de-velop a national trade and industry group with focus on offshore wind farms. With the coming establishment of Green Offshore Center (GOC) in June 2011, Esbjerg is chosen to become the centre of the part of the value chain perform-ing project engineering, installation, operation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines. The short-term object is to form a group of 15 companies – 40 companies in 2015 - in a close strategic cooperation to utilize the commercial op-portunities in a huge market. In the North Sea region alone, app. 10,000 offshore wind turbines in projects amounting to several hundred billion Danish kroner are expected to be installed within the

Green Offshore Center will create thousands of jobs in the Offshore Wind Industry

next 10 years. We are now entering a very focused and business-oriented process for the esta-blishment of a strong cooperation to uti-lize the opportunities in the offshore wind industry. Region South Denmark and Es- bjerg Industrial Development Council have in close cooperation with the local trade and industry, higher educational institutions, Port of Esbjerg and Esbjerg Council defined the local positions of strength within offshore wind energy.Esbjerg is strongly qualified within all fields necessary for the planning, erec-tion and servicing of offshore wind farms. Know-how and experience will now be transformed into more jobs by supplying the same services worldwide.A steering committee is formed to be in control until GOC’s first general meeting

in June. The committee consists of: Ma-naging Director Steen Brødbæk, Semco Maritime, Managing Director Kurt Skov/Blue Water Shipping A/S, Director Ole Ingrisch/Esbjerg Havn (Port of Esbjerg), Managing Director Lars Wigant/Sub-CPartner A/S, Sales Director Kaj Lindvig/A2Sea A/S and Professor Flemming Just/Syddansk Universitet (South Denmark University). The strength of the project’s strategy process lies in the fact that the project is based on the strength we already have, and that we have what it takes to further utilize this strength on the local and the global market. We simply add more sto-reys to the tower block we already have, and run the projects by joining forces in a joint organisation, says Steen Brødbæk, member of the steering committee.

Biomass Plant to ScotlandIn November 2010, Blue Water’s project department was asked to handle the transport of a brand-new biomass plant from Herning in Denmark to a large pa-per mill near Glenrothes in Scotland. The environmentally friendly plant will be supplying steam which improves the paper drying process. In addition, it will be providing electricity and reducing the paper mill’s fossil fuel CO2 emissions by around 250,000 tons each year. The transport to Scotland consisted of three boilers, each weighing 85 tons and measuring 9.9 x 4.66 x 4.9 metres, as well as fittings and other plant equipment. In order to avoid unnecessary delays due to cargo weight, Blue Water carried out a complete road survey from Immingham to Glenrothes as well as a site survey prior to the actual transport. The project transport by special trailer and RORO ferry from the port of Esbjerg went as planned and the biomass plant was delivered to the consignee on time.

Blue Water News | No. 96 | April 2011

30 yearsOle Ulriksen/Blue Water Aalborg will be celebrating his 30th anniversary with Blue Water on 1.8. Ole has since ‘89 been in charge of our Aalborg office which today numbers 36 employees.Ole is hot on travelling, especially to Thai-land where the whole family has spent their Christmas holiday the last couple of years, despite their love for skiing and the fact that they do not like giving up their annual skiing holiday. At home, Ole is in the minority as his two sons have moved to Thisted - Andreas in boarding school and Nikolaj in the upper secondary school - and Anne and Tina know just how to keep him busy. In addi-tion to being very sporty and competitive, Ole is also a real handyman who takes care of everything in house and garden. Ole is popular and known for his com-mitment to his job as well as to his leisure time activities - for instance in Nibe Sports Club where he plays hand-ball.

Another colleague, Allan Junge/Blue Water Esbjerg, will also celebrate his 30th anniversary on 1.8. Allan is today finance director for the entire Blue Water Group and member of the board of ma-nagement and has a very busy working day focusing on numbers and figures. During recent years, Allan has also de-veloped into a “project manager” as he is our construction coordinator. At present, our new headquarters needs his attention and involvement – as not a single window pane or lamp escapes his attention. At the home front, Susanne is in charge – and the family’s first grandchild – little Emily - has just seen the light of day. Ac-cording to Allan, Emily is sure to have a very bright future ahead of her as all her birth data consist of prime numbers. Only a number nerd would notice such things!

SilverOn 21.7, Carsten Steffensen will be cele-brating his silver jubilee. Carsten started as freight forwarding trainee in 1986 and has since performed functions ranging from freight forwarder, sales represen-tative to his present job as director. His career also includes “postings” in Vojens (at Donau Ekspres, acquired by Blue Wa-ter Transport) and in Padborg focusing on transport of fresh fish. Carsten’s working day is now also spiced with his role as ge-neral manager for 220 employees in Es-

bjerg along with being a member of the board of management. During the last year, Carsten has shared an additional job with Allan Junge as project manager on the construction of our new headquar-ters. Funny thing, Carsten’s jubilee coin-cides with the inauguration of our new office if the construction proceeds accor-ding to plan. Carsten and his wife, Helena, live in the town of Grindsted, where their three sons, Casper, Jonas and Oliver, keep their limited free time fully booked.

It is hard to believe that it is 25 years sin-ce Anette entered the door (on 1.8.86) as a promising freight forwarding trainee in our airfreight department in Esbjerg.Having completed her apprenticeship, Annette started a family. First came Be-tina – who is 21 years old today – and soon followed another daughter, Su-sanne – who is now 19 years old. As the family took up much of Anette’s time, she changed to working part-time as admi-nistrative assistant in airfreight. Later on, she moved to the accounts department, where she is now taking care of the ac-counts of our Billund office and other airfreight-related matters. On the home front, Anette’s husband Niels (Muus) takes good care of her. Here is also stability as the couple will soon be celebrating their silver anniversary. The whole family likes sports – Anette fre-quents the fitness centre and Muus is a coach for new promising goalkeeper ta-lents in EFB (Esbjerg Football Club).Anette is known as an obliging, attentive, straightforward and positive girl. She al-ways goes along with the joke and likes to get a move on whenever there is a party. In particular, the annual Christmas party is a hit and a natural opportunity to exchange old cock-and-bull stories and Blue Water anecdotes.

20 yearsOn 17.6, it will be 20 years since Al-lan Bate joined our Manchester office as accounts manager. It only feels like yesterday that the fresh faced young guy drove up in his Golf GTI. Now Allan is responsible for the financial matters for all our UK offices. His ability to present financial reports and statistics in an un-derstandable format has been a great help to many colleagues over the years. He is a key member of the UK staff and always willing to help and advise his col-leagues whenever they need it. Allan is a keen follower of sport and has a great

passion for Manchester United and also for the “Sport of Kings” or horse racing to the rest of us. Fortunately his enthusiasm is shared by his wife Katrina. Allan and Katrina have three lovely daughters, Megan and the twins, Sadie and Ruby. After a hard day at the office, we are sure that they help him unwind and relax

Marianne Berg will be celebrating her 20th anniversary on 1.7. “Mulle” (comes from her middle name Mullesgaard) first started in the accounts department in Es-bjerg where she, after a few detours to Odense and Padborg, still knocks about. Marianne was for several years respon-sible for the accounts of Blue Water’s haulage business (Blue Water Transport) and not least the payment of wages to the drivers. When the haulage business was closed in 2004, Marianne was trans-ferred to Esbjerg and is today respon-sible for the 8 colleagues of the local Esbjerg accounts. Marianne is no doubt a company woman, always leading the way in the daily work or when an extra effort needs to be made. Marianne is married to Leif, who first started his charm offensive when he was a Blue Water driver and later as terminal ma-nager in Padborg. Lots of flowers were deli-vered at her desk, without a card, before he succeeded in winning her heart. Marianne and Leif now live in Bramming and have a little daughter Signe. They are enthusias-tic campers and love to go to Germany or Sweden with their mobile home.

On 1.8, it will be Claus Laursen’s (Blue Water Dubai) turn to celebrate his 20th anniversary. Claus started his career as trainee in our deep sea department in Esbjerg followed by 2 years in our agency department. After solid training and education, Claus wished to take up new challenges abroad and was from 1994-98 posted in Dubai only interrupted by a 3-month period at our office in Tbilisi, Georgia. Claus was for a short period engaged in the development of our food activities in the US, but moved to Copenhagen after-wards and was appointed manager of our sea freight department and respon- sible for our warehouse/logistics business. After 5 years in Copenhagen, Claus ac-cepted the challenge as general manager of our Dubai office – a position he still holds along with his responsibility for our office in Jebel Ali and our activities in Abu Dhabi. The family includes Claus’ wife, Joan, and the children Caroline and Rasmus. Claus is a competent and loyal colleague, who over the years has been involved in many different projects. During his latest posting, in particular, Claus has develo-ped into an extremely competent project freight forwarder who has secured seve-ral big assignments for Blue Water.

Furthermore she is a very good colleague always ready to help. She must really like her job, as she once

came back to work several days before the end of her holiday. To others she may just seem a bit confused! She is really cool. She does not mind driving all the way to Italy for a camping holiday with her two daughters.

After a little less than 9 years with Blue Wa-ter Rotterdam, Rene van Belle decided in August 2000 that it was time to seek new pastures. In 2001, however, after two diffe-rent job experiences and after getting mar-ried, Rene returned to Blue Water to take care of reefer sales and will therefore be celebrating his 10th jubilee on 1.8 – at the second attempt. In the meantime, Rene has got two lovely daughters. He loves biking and discussing football and other sports with the clients – of course in between offering our services and following up on quotations etc. The depart-ment has grown substantially over the years and is now, unlike in the old days, split up in sales, operation and documentation.

Heidi Frost Kristensen will be celebrating her 10th anniversary in our accounts de-partment on 1.8. Heidi originally started as trainee in the economy department and is today part of the accounts payable depart-ment, where we enjoy her splendid ser-vice and helpfulness. Heidi is very popular among her colleagues. In her free time, she is a very fine dressage rider, and we have always followed her clo-sely on the ranking list. Heidi is also the only Blue Water employee who has stayed at home due to the horse’s first sick day!Since she completed her apprenticeship, Heidi has become a mother of two little girls, Simone and Laura, and has married Torben and exchanged the horses for a house in Janderup and a doggie.

On 1.8, Lasse Nørgaard Wolff / Blue Wa-ter Esbjerg will be celebrating his 10th ju-bilee. Lasse started his career as trainee, first in our agency department and then in the deep sea department. In 2006, Lasse was transferred to our Dubai office. This obviously made him grow up as his usual t-shirts or sweatshirts are now replaced by nice white shirts.Back in Esbjerg, Lasse joined our oil & ener-gy department and was in 2009 appointed department manager. Lasse manages the department professionally with his ability to create an overview and not least his humo-rous manners. Lasse loves gourmet food, but sticks to his packet lunch, consisting of 4 open mackerel sandwiches, in order to be able to save up for flight tickets to visit his beloved Birgitte, who lives in Paris ….. or London …

Trine Brosbøl Leth Andersen will also be ce-lebrating her 10 anniversary on 1.8. Trine started as freight forwarding trainee in our UK department and moved, in her second year of apprenticeship, to the terminal office where she has since been working as admi-nistrative assistant.Trine is fast: certified freight forwarder al-ready a year after her apprenticeship, quick at repartee, quick at her keyboard and most recently also quick at having children – 2 sons within 16 months. Trine will be on ma-ternity leave on the day of her jubilee. In addition to being the happy songbird of the terminal office, Trine is also the promo-ter of social events.

On 1.8, the head of our department for major customers and warehouse logistics in Copenhagen, Jakob Møldrup, will be cele-brating his 10th anniversary. Jakob received his training and education at Blue Water within multimodal transport – air, sea and road. After his apprenticeship, Jakob joi-ned airfreight and since 2006, the project customers belong under his wing. A group focusing on customers with special trans-port needs was established in 2008. This group handles large transport projects for MT Højgaard, FLSmidth and NKT Flexib- les among others, and Jakob has during the last couple of years gathered special ex-perience in project transport challenges in Russia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldive Islands, Vietnam etc.Jakob’s spare time is dedicated to his fa-mily – Lenette and their two children Mag-nus and Ida – and to his goalkeeper job in Greve Håndbold (handball club).

Peter Ravn from our project department in Esbjerg will be celebrating his 10th anni-versary on 29.8. After his maritime career (his last job was as captain in Clipper Elite Carriers), Peter was employed at Blue Water Stevedoring as foreman/supercargo. Here, he followed a lot of ships loading and dis-charging wind turbines in Denmark as well as in other European ports. As our project department expanded, a need for a person with Peter’s maritime and stevedore back-ground developed, and Peter was talked into becoming an “office nerd”. He is today in charge of the operations department for wind turbine transport, the staff of which have increased to include 12 persons. Pe-ter has also been an active member of the Rescue Service in Esbjerg for a number of years. Peter and his wife, Hanne, have passed their silver wedding anniversary and the family also includes their 3 lovely daughters and an ill-bred dog.

In Esbjerg, we cherish the old traditions. A special one is the annual Forwarders’ Cup arranged by members of Esbjerg For-warders’ Association. As usual, Blue Wa-ter teamed up to defend the blue colours. This time with 6 teams – 3 men’s teams, 2 old boys and 1 mixed team – and high hopes. Not least for the men’ teams which held an impressive pool of talents. Unfor-tunately they did not come up to our ex-pectations, but ended as second, third and fourth after DHL. At the same time, it was pointed out that personal success before team success does not produce medals. Our old boys and mixed team did better, as the old boys succeeded in taking home both gold and silver medals, and after an exciting and well played final, our mixed team won the gold medal. The award ceremony took place at the grand party in the evening, held at Blue Water Arena, where the participants dined and danced the night away.

Forwarders’ CupThe topping-out ceremony for our new headquarters in Esbjerg took place on 13.1. Here in Denmark, the tradition is used to mark the completion of a collecti-ve job – raftering a roof – in this case clo-sing of the 6th floor – and hopefully give the house a good start. In the old days, a tree was placed on the topmost beam to drive away evil spirits. Today it is most common to place one or more garlands at the top. All tradesmen on the construc-tion job as well as supervisors, the engi-neering firm, architect, other parties in-volved and Blue Water’s staff were invited to the ceremony. All guests were offered sausages, beer and soft drinks while listening to speeches. A freezing pleasure – but a step in the right direction.

Topping-out Ceremony

Blue Water’s customs manager, Claus Bo Larsen, finished his long international “football” career as referee in the inter-national match between England and

France at Wembley Stadium in November 2010 and in the Champions League match be-tween Milan and Ajax in De-cember 2010. Claus Bo’s career numbers 105 international jobs in total, including many Cham-pions League and international matches – and even Olympic and World Cup matches for club teams.Claus Bo will, however, continue as referee in the Danish Premier League, where he made his debut in 1994. So far, he has acted as referee in no less than 296 matches in the best Danish league, which beats all records. No wonder that the referee job has taken up a great deal of Claus Bo’s life, and he now looks forward to scaling down his “Saturday-job”. Claus Bo is known for his cheer-

ful mood and witty remarks, which make him very popular on the football field as well as among his colleagues.

Staff RedeploymentOn 1.2, Michael Rud from our project de-partment in Esbjerg and his family set out for the West to try their fortune in the US. Michael is transferred to Corpus Christi in Texas where he is looking after wind tur-bine transport.

Tina Rasmussen is transferred from the continental department of Blue Water Odense to Blue Water Copenhagen as from 1.4. Tina will join the department dealing with Italy, Spain, Portugal and UK.

For the last 7 years, Kim Thue Andersen has formed part of our sales team in Esbjerg. This summer, Kim will be transferred to Blue Water Fort Lauderdale as sales repre-sentative to primarily focus on development of our reefer activities. Kim has previously worked in the US – Seattle - for 5 years and he and his family are now looking forward to going back to the States
