This Sunday we continue with Chapter 11 in the Story program. It is hard to believe that we are now 1/3 of the way through. We have covered a lot of ground since the start of Genesis with creation. Now we are into the time of the Kings. In this chapter we see the familiar story of David and Goliath. Goliath is a huge man, standing taller than anyone else. David, a Shepherd Boy, at the young age of 16, clearly the underdog, with little chance of winning let alone his survival, comes to the battle ground with no swords and just a slingshot and five small stones. David and Goliath come to battle and David fires a stone at Goliath and kills him dead. He attributes his victory, not to his strength, but to faith and the power of God’s strength. There are times in our lives that we are faced with Goli- ath sized problems and wonder how we will solve them. Through faith and patience in God we may be able to defeat the chal- lenges posed to us. In the service we will be having some special music offered by Mike Hopper on drums and trumpet and Rob Ogger will be playing guitar. It will be an exciting and uplifting service. UNITED WAY LUNCHEON: November 23: HELP WANTED!!!! We were asked in the Spring to host the Luncheon for the UW House tour once again as we were such a hit last year.

This project makes a significant amount of money for our church and was a great outreach as many who attended had never been inside St. Andrew's and were impressed by how lovely it was and how welcoming we were. We need help-

ers for Friday evening (6:30-8:30) to set up tables/chairs and to make sandwich fillings and cut squares and cut up cel-

ery sticks. While I know you are all tired of baking we need your assistance ONE MORE TIME. Marlene Beitz is coordi-nating this - please talk to her about the specifications for dainties. Baking needs to be at the church, uncut, Friday.

evening. We need helpers on Saturday to make the sandwiches and do the plating, coffee/tea and clean up in the after-noon (8-3:30 pm divided into 2.5 hr shifts). There will be a sign-up sheet on Sunday AM with short shifts so you can

pick and choose and no one has to be there all day. Please sign up or speak to Colleen Armstrong (volunteer workers),

Marlene Beitz (baking) or Greg Howard (CEO of project) as to what you can do.

What a lovely Sunday it was! Al-

most like spring! But that all

started to change on Monday.

Does anyone else think our

weather has become very unusual

of late? As I sit at my computer I

can see the tops of two large ev-ergreens swaying in the strong

wind and I wonder how long they

will last before they snap.

Another big weekend coming up

for St. Andrew’s; the luncheon

for the United Way House Tour.

It will need a lot of people to

help prepare for likely 500 people

I am told. If you can help give

Colleen Armstrong a call.

If you are baking you should call

Marlene Beitz regarding specifica-

tions for dainties. Baking needs to

be in the church, uncut, Friday

evening.

Our thoughts are with Bill King

as he continues to go through

tests to determine what they will

do to correct his health problem.

We have said goodbye to the

UCW. They have decided to dis-

continue their meetings. Perhaps

some of the younger ladies will

take up the torch. Over the past

books about church development and visioning. I hope that you will enjoy having him join us next weekend for worship.

This weekend is yet another busy one at St. Andrew’s with the United Way Luncheon. Our dozens of vol-unteers will be catering to about 500 people as they make their way around town seeing houses deco-rated for Christmas. We pray that the day will be successful and we pray that God will give them strength in serving on Saturday. A big thanks to all those who will be helping out.

Today we celebrate with Brenda McCurdy, our former Student In-

This week while at home on a short study leave time I had the opportunity to have a Skype meeting with Rev. Tom Bandy.

Tom will be speaking at St. An-drew’s on Dec 1st for our 55th an-niversary service. Tom is cur-rently in Baltimore, Maryland teaching a workshop with some churches there. I have known Tom for more than 20 years and it was nice to connect with him again. Since the time Tom left St. Andrew’s in 1989, he has been doing work consulting and writing

tern, as she passed her final Ordi-nation interview yesterday at To-ronto Conference. Ordination interviews can be a stressful time and Brenda did well in her inter-view. Her next step will be to complete her studies at Em-manuel College this spring and then to be ordained in May at the rise of Conference. Congratula-tions Brenda!

Blessings to you, and see you on Sunday.

PHILLIPINE TYPHOON RELIEF

Members of The United Church of Canada have shown their generosity this past week. A total of $235,271.25 has been given by 1515 donors (as of 8:45 a.m., Wednesday, November 20).

Special Aid Appeal for the Philippines Relief Fund Government Will Match Donations for Philippines Typhoon Appeal

The United Church has issued a church-wide appeal for donations in response to the super typhoon that devastated much of the Philippines on November 8.

Funds donated will be distributed to United Church partners in the Philippines and ACT Alliance for relief and recon-struction efforts. The Canadian government will match, dollar for dollar, donations to registered Canadian charities, including the United Church, made between November 9 and December 8.

According to the government, "For every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian chari-ties in response to the impact of Typhoon Haiyan on the Philippines and other affected countries, the government will set aside one dollar for the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. The government will use the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund to provide assistance through international and Canadian humanitarian organizations, employing established channels and procedures."

Registered charities, including the United Church, will be able to apply to the government's Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund to augment relief projects in the Philippines, although there is no guarantee that any project or charity will receive funding from the government's fund.

To be eligible for matching, donations need to be received at the United Church's General Council Office no later than December 8.

What You Can Do

Pray Pray for our Filipino sisters and brothers who have lost loved ones, their homes, and their livelihoods. Pray for the members of the ACT's Philippines Forum who are working tirelessly to assess damage on the ground and organize an emergency response. Pray for United Church partners in the Philippines-the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) and United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP)-as they work diligently to attend to the needs of Filipinos affected by the disaster. Pray for the Government of the Philippines, which is working with civil society organizations to ensure that relief needs are met as soon as possible. Pray for the international community that is rushing to the aid of the people of the Philippines.

Donate

Please donate to Typhoon Haiyan Relief. Your donation will be applied directly to support the relief and reconstruction work of United Church partners in the Philippines and ACT Alliance. Here's how you can donate:

Online via our secure donation page. Phone 416-231-5931 or toll-free 1-800-268-3781 and use your Visa or MasterCard. Send a cheque, money order, or Visa or MasterCard information with donation amount to:

The United Church of Canada Philanthropy Unit - Emergency Response 3250 Bloor Street West, Suite 300 Toronto, Ontario M8X 2Y4 Please be sure to note "Emergency Response-Typhoon Haiyan Relief" on the face of your cheque.

Page 7: News and inspiration from St. Andrew’s United Church ...€¦ · CHRISTMAS CANTATA Please join us for an evening of beautiful music, as the choir and friends from St. Andrew's United

What to Do for Your Donation to Be Matched by the Government

For United Church donations to qualify for Canadian government matching funds, certain conditions need to be met: Donations need to be received at the United Church's General Council Office no later than December 8, 2013. Donations need to be received from individuals only, not companies or businesses.

To ensure that all money collected is seen as coming from individual donors, we ask that congregations encourage members to give directly to The United Church of Canada, 3250 Bloor St. West, Suite 300, Toronto, On-tario M8X 2Y4 (cheques need to be marked "Emergency Response-Typhoon Haiyan Relief") or encourage members to give directly online.

Alternately, collect all personal cheques received and forward them to the United Church address above. Please in-clude with the cheques a list of the names and addresses of individual donors and the amounts each has given.

Note: As part of the United Church's Emergency Response Fund, 85 percent of your donation will go directly to emer-gency response in the Philippines.

Fifteen percent will be used to respond to disasters throughout the world that do not receive media coverage and of-ten go unnoticed. No administration fees will be deducted from your donation. Donations for Mission and Service en-able the United Church to provide staffing and cover the administration costs of its emergency response work.

Partners, ACT Alliance Assessing Needs and Responding

Both the NCCP and UCCP are working hard to assess immediate needs and organize emergency disaster responses. The most urgent requirements will include food, drinking water, clothing, sleeping materials, temporary shelter, and medi-cines. ACT is preparing an appeal to its worldwide network for donations for typhoon relief and reconstruction. The NCCP is a member of ACT's Philippines Forum and will share the responsibility for implementing relief and reconstruc-tion projects funded by the ACT appeal. The United Church of Canada has donated $5,000 from its Emergency Re-sponse Fund to assist ACT with its rapid response activities in Philippines.

Strongest Typhoon on Record

Typhoon Haiyan packed winds of over 300 km/hr and is the strongest typhoon on record. It struck after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in September that displaced 400,000 Filipinos, killed 400, and caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure on Bohol Island in eastern Philippines. "We are still reeling from the impact of the earthquake in Bohol and now we have another big whammy," said Pastor Levilou Amora, the UCCP's Program Coordinator in the region. The back-to-back catastrophes have taxed the Philippines' capacity to respond to disasters and available resources are now severely overstretched, the UCCP said. If more disasters strike before year's end, "the country's economic woes will worsen, and many of our people will suffer from hunger and despair," the UCCP added.

Thank you for your concern and support for the people of the Philippines.
