Testimony from Neophytes…...

In my earlier years, I didn’t have much of a relationship with God. It was a relationship that I took for granted. I prayed because everyone’s doing it or I just wanted something rather than out of love or devotion. When I look back now, I realize that I lost the sense of sin, blinded by the physical world on so many occasions. It was the mercy and love of God that saved me from falling deeper into sin. Since then I have a wonderful family, secured a good job, and was quite contented with life. But because of the original sin and the tough world we live in, it’s always tough in my daily life and relationship with people. My mind was full of negativity and the mind can only take so much. I went to church a number of times before this, the best I like about Mass was when the priest said, “Go, the Mass is ended” and the parishioners responded; “Thanks be to God”. Mass didn’t mean anything to me back then. In 2014, Christmas Eve, I attended the Mass at St. Simon Church Likas with my family, I was as usual, feeling nothing. We were seated outside of the church when the choir sang ‘Ave Maria’, it was a feeling that I will never forget. Throughout the song I felt at ease, very peaceful. And my heart was so overwhelmed that I felt like a little nudge. Since then I attended Mass more and eventually joined the RCIA. Every time I stepped into the church, I felt everything slowed down from outside where everything is always in a rush. I felt at home, where I’m supposed to be. Technically I have a home, but that’s where my physical body rests, every time in the church, that is where my soul rests. From there I got to know my saviour, Jesus Christ, and He changed my life. Through the Holy Spirit, I have begun to look and think of things, people, situations, good or bad, humbly. God has given me strength to steer away from the bad when my weak mind was inclined to do so. He saved me, over and over again, in every way. A person can be saved!

The night of my baptism will remain the best night of my life. Each time I receive the Lord it’s an experience that fills me with joy and hope. It’s a privilege that I can receive the Lord in the form of bread, to nourish and sustain not only me but also the whole Catholic community. Nothing will take me away from the Eucharist, for it is there that I have experienced the grace of the Lord. I’m sure that God who began the wonderful work within me will continue until the day I’d be received by His loving arms. In waiting for the Lord to come again, I shall serve as His faithful and humble servant, now and forever. Praise the Lord. Amen. By Alvin
