OUC BOARD APPROVES ELECTRIC INTEGRATED RESOURCE PLAN TO HELP DETERMINE FUTURE GENERATION NEEDS

HAPPY NEW YEAR

At OUC, preparing for Orlando’s growth while also adhering to the City’s commitment to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2050 is no easy feat.

That’s why at December’s Commission Meeting, the Board approved the process of creating an Electric Integrated Resource Plan (EIRP), an 18-month comprehensive analysis to determine how to best meet our community’s future electric needs.

The EIRP will project demand through 2040 and take into consideration population growth, distributed generation, conservation efforts and community/stakeholder feedback to build an electric roadmap that effectively balances reliability, affordability and sustainability.

While OUC has completed this kind of study in the past, a new element is the gathering of input from the community and stakeholders.

“I’m excited about the stakeholder engagement part of this process,” said ClintBullock, General Manager & CEO.

“We want to hear from all segments of our customer base.”

Many groups have taken a vested interest in how OUC plans to move forward with generation. That’s why the Commission has hired Essense Partners, a research firm with expertise in the energy sector, to serve as an independent third party to gather thoughts and concerns from the public regarding Orlando’s energy future.

The EIRP, expected to conclude in 2020, will help the Board and Executive Leadership make important decisions regarding the expansion of conventional supply-side resources, power purchases and renewables while keeping the best interests of customers, employees and our community in mind.

Look for these symbols at the end of each story (where applicable) to see what sets OUC apart.

GREG LEE WELCOMES ATTENDEES TO POWER GENERATION CONFERENCE

2

EMPLOYEE TOWN HALL SERIES KICKS OFF AT PERSHINGNearly 400 employees gathered at Pershing in December for the first round of Employee Town Hall meetings with ClintBullock, General Manager & CEO. Bullock discussed the Connected 2025 Strategic Plan and new initiatives, and unveiled “Focus on the Road,” a new safety campaign around distracted driving. Attendees also heard from LatishaThompson, Chief Employee Experience Officer, about employee engagement initiatives, and MichelleLynch, Director of Corporate Communication, about the upcoming launch of the OUC360 Employee News Network. Attendees also had the chance to ask Bullock and members of the leadership team questions, and tour a Gallery Walk, which featured key projects from departments around the Commission.

The Employee Town Hall Series will continue through the end of the February. If you haven’t already, visit OUCareer to sign up for an upcoming session.

In December, OUC Commission PresidentGregLee kicked off the 2018 POWERGEN International Conference at the Orange County Convention Center. During his welcome address, Lee touted Orlando’s booming economy and spoke about the Stanton Energy Center’s diverse fuel portfolio, as well as our commitment to renewable energy and driving electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Orlando.

OUC served as the annual three-day conference’s host utility, which brought together nearly 3,000 attendees from around the world to discuss topics and trends that focus on technology, innovation and policy advancement in the power generation space.

Also as part of the agenda, SamChoi, Manager of Emerging Technologies and Renewables, andJustinKramer, Supervisor of Emerging Technologies, spoke about OUC’s solar initiatives during a breakout session.

DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT: CHILLED WATER SERVICES

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER SERVICE CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS THROUGH VOLUNTEERINGOn a Saturday in December, a group of Residential Customer Service employees took time to give back to our community by participating in Food For The Poor’s Join The Pack event. The group gathered at the Englewood Neighborhood Center to fill plastic bags with cups of rice, soy, and flavoring with essential vitamins and nutrients. The packs will be used to feed needy children in Guatemala.

Building managers across central Florida are keeping their properties cool thanks to OUCooling and the dedicated team in Chilled Water Services. The mighty crew consists of technicians, chilled water operators and office staff who work behind the scenes to keep the innovative technology running smoothly and efficiently.

“We’re a small department but we manage nine chilled water plants in various locations so communication and cohesion is essential to our operations. It helps that we have a great team,” said DavidTaggart, Apprentice Chilled Water Operator.

When asked about the many operations the team performs, AaronT.Fagen, Manager of Chilled Water Services, jokingly said,

“We’d be here all day. There’s an encyclopedia of duties that our team performs daily.”

“We provide reliable chilled water service to our customers for their air conditioning needs,” said LuisVelez, Master Technician. “Not only do we provide the product, but we also maintain the production equipment and keep our facilities clean.”

Orlando-area companies such as the CNL Center, Lockheed Martin, the Westin Grand Bohemian Hotel, Orange County Convention Center and The Mall at Millenia enjoy the rewards of the chilled water's hard work every day. And soon, the Orlando International Airport will be part of that group.

The team has various projects to enhance operational effectiveness.

“We’re currently upgrading the data acquisition process with electromagnetic flow meter technology. We’re also installing acid feed systems to help conserve water and reduce cooling tower blowdown,” said Velez. “We continue to push the boundaries of what it means to be reliable and innovative.”

COOL JOBS AROUND THE COMMISSION: DAVID HERRICK, PLANNING ANALYST

DavidHerrick is the man with the plan, at least for his role as an OUC Planning Analyst. Herrick prides himself on strategically predicting the future, but his move from Charlotte, NC was a much-needed surprise. Herrick traded cold weather and snow boots for sunshine and sunscreen to work for OUC and make Orlando his new home.

RESPONSIBILITIESPrediction can be quite challenging. Luckily, Herrick works with a talented team to create a corporate model to

forecast debt issuances and future rate impacts. Like a corporate psychic, Herrick is armed with data from OUC’s revenue and capital spending plan to account for major assumptions like fuel and wholesale costs and to predict how OUC will perform financially for the next 10 years. In between planning cycles, he creates rates for water, electric and other services OUC offers to keep us competitive but affordable.

TYPICALDAYHerrick works in a fast-paced environment buzzing with deadlines, meetings and the occasional pit stops throughout the Commission to collect data from different operations. But it’s all in a day’s work for Herrick. “I enjoy learning about how each department provides reliable services to our

customers so I can better understand pricing rate components,” said Herrick.

WHYOUC“We have a strong family culture within OUC and it translates well into how we operate in the community,” he said. “One of my favorite memories is participating in the IOA Corporate 5K. It was the perfect combination of being able to interact with my coworkers outside of the office while making a difference in our community.”

EDUCATIONHerrick holds a Master of Accountancy from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Virginia Tech University.

BILLING ADDED TO OUC ALERTS PROGRAM At OUC, we’re always seeking innovative ways to enhance our customers’ experience. That’s why we launched OUC Alerts in 2017 to keep customers better informed. We started with Outage Alerts to let them know about outages via voice, text or email. And now, we’re ringing in the new year with Billing Alerts so they know when their bill is ready to be viewed and when their payment is due. They can also request their current balance via text.

TAKING HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO A NEW LEVEL

During the IT holiday party in December, ChrisKnothe, Sr. Server Administrator, donned a festive hand-made OUC sweater emblazoned with more than 300 battery-powered LED lights and a hat complete with working Stanton cooling towers and a line truck. Chris, of course, swept the costume competition with flying colors.

2019 OUC HOLIDAYSThe following days will be observed as paid holidays by OUC. Shift employees will observe holidays on the actual date, not the observed date. OUC offices will be closed on the designated dates and all other departments will operate on a holiday schedule.

OUC ELECTRIC ENGINEERS, CREWS HELPS RELOCATE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN HOMEA downtown Orlando developer wanting to relocate a historic home near Lake Eola to build new townhomes in its place sought the help of OUC electric engineers and line crews. Instead of tearing down the 1921 home, built just after the conclusion of World War I, the developer received permission from the City of Orlando to hoist the home off its foundation and move it just two blocks away. But, this process needed the cooperation of OUC to temporarily remove power lines that stood in the way.

“Our team worked with construction crews to determine what lines needed to be disconnected along the relocation path,” said KristenHarrington, Distribution Engineer. “We committed to keeping service interruptions as short as possible, so crews were available to reconnect power as soon as the home was out of the way and it was safe to do so.”

Ahead of the disruptions, OUC notified neighbors via phone calls, door hangers and contact with the area’s homeowners’ association. The move was completed in just a few hours with minimal delays.

Thanks to our electric engineering, construction and line crews for making this possible!

EMPLOYEES HIT THE PAVEMENT FOR 40TH OUC MARATHON/5K

More than 130 OUC employees, retirees, friends and family members took to the streets of downtown Orlando in December for the 40th OUC Orlando Half Marathon and Track Shack Lake Eola 5k. Commission President GregLee kicked off the race and OUC-branded EVs served as pace vehicles. Earlier in 2018, the race earned Silver Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for tapping water from OUC hydrants along the course, eliminating the need for 2,700 plastic gallon jugs. The race was the first and only race in Florida to earn this honor.

An OUC line technician temporarily removes overhead lines near Lake Eola so a historic home can be relocated.

It’s the start of a new year, and you know what that means – resolutions! Not sure whether to laugh or grimace? You’re not alone. Anyone who has tried to establish or break a habit knows change requires engaging our knowledge, our willpower and our skills. Change at OUC works similarly because, as individuals, we are learning to work together in a new way.

In 2018, we activated OUC’s change management approach. Based on the Prosci ADKAR model, it focuses on what people need to act on to achieve goals. It includes two components:

The ChangeManagementProgramconsists of a roadmap and processes to help project teams identify and provide what employees need to make change happen, like training and communication. Continuous Improvement (CI) will share more about the framework as it takes shape in 2019.

The ChangeAgentNetwork(CAN) includes employees across all levels and business units who act as agents and ambassadors for change at OUC. These were the first frontline employees to receive early insights from the Employee Communication Survey and Leadership Forum.

Three projects are using the model now: The EmployeeEngagementSurvey(CAN members offered input about the survey approach); the Safety/RiskProgram being discussed at the current Town Hall Series; and the OUCAgendaProcess. Additional projects are on the horizon.

For more information about the OUC change management approach, contact MaggieBurdette, Manager of Business Process Improvement, at [email protected] or KatePowers, Manager of Human Resources Strategy, at [email protected].
