Secretary) [email protected] J U N I O R S C H O O L R E P O R T CO CURRICULAR REMINDER Please note: There will be no co curricular activities next week - Monday 27th July until Friday 31st July. MISSION SKILLS ASSESSMENT (MSA) The OECD in their 2015 Research Report highlighted the important role that social and emotional skills play in academic achievement and life in general for people living in the 21st century. They suggested that educational institutions have an important role to play in ensuring that the citizens of tomorrow are well equipped with more than just academics, something that we have always believed in at

our College and something that runs through every subject and topic that we teach. We are proud to announce that Year Six was selected to join other Independent schools to participate in pilot research around how well do schools in Australia do this and, how do we know? Does it need to be explicitly taught? The Mission Skills Assessment (MSA) is an instrument designed by Independent Schools Data Exchange (INDEX) and Educational Testing Services in the USA which enables schools to measure their effectiveness in teaching these skills, via objective and scientific feedback and data. Do we meet the goals of our vision and mission? Last term, Year Six completed online questions around teamwork, creativity, ethics, resilience, curiosity and time management relating to their experiences. The teacher was also required to complete a questionnaire on each student. We look forward to the findings that will be released later in the year and will certainly share them with you. We thank the Association of Independent Schools for including our school in this valuable research. BEFORE SCHOOL CARE Parents are reminded that Before School Care is available each morning. If you drop your child off before 8:15am, you need to take them to Before School Care. Mrs A. Mrs A. Katsogiannis Principal Senior School M I D D L E S C H O O L R E P O R T

“Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and

intelligent execution” Aristotle Welcome back and good luck for Term 3. Hopefully everyone has had a wonderful holiday and is ready to tackle the second half of the year with focussed determination and enthusiasm. By now all students would have read their half yearly reports and had time to reflect upon their achievements, as well as identified areas for improvement. Setting clear goals and taking measures to improve results by re-examining their study routines is advised. Following are some tips that may be helpful.

10 STUDY TIPS FOR STUDENTS 1. Plan your study time into 30- 40 minute blocks. Take a break between each block. This will help reset your brain for maximum concentration. 2. Refresh your mind by moving your body - walk the dog, dance, do some exercises, help cook dinner, or wash the dishes. During break times it is probably not a good idea to go online, watch TV or play electronic games.(you can do this after or at another time). 3. Complete homework given each day on the same night. It will make more sense, and you will remember what you learnt more easily. 4. Focus on understanding rather than memorising. The more you understand the less you have to remember. 5. Make study notes on days when you have little or no homework and keep working on them so that you have all topics covered. It will help reduce stress and improve performance. 6. Write a list of important dates, information and equations and put them on your noticeboard in your room, or somewhere else where you will see them easily. 7. If you’re confused or stuck on some aspect of learning, try visiting the Khan Academy online at www.khanacademy.org . This tutoring service is free and has online videos in a wide variety of subjects that may be useful. 8. Sleep 8 or 9 hours per night for optimum brain function. 9. When it all gets to much, STOP, have a longer break, go do something fun to get a fresh perspective. 10. Be Positive. A positive mind set will not create talent but it will release it

YEAR 7 & YEAR 10 PEER SUPPORT LEADER “SOCIAL” On the last day of Term Year 7 met their Peer Support Leaders for a catch up session at lunch to talk about their first semester at the Senior School, while sharing some snacks brought in by Year 10. This was followed by a friendly game of Dodgeball. Everyone had a great time and welcomed the opportunity to interact in this way. Below are some the group responses to questions that were asked. What were your First Semester highlights? Making new friends in Year 7 and in other years; feeling the strong community; having more freedom and responsibility; feeling more grown up; the big campus; having lockers; really fun swimming carnival; competition sports and travelling to away games on Saturdays; the teachers; all the great new subjects What were your First Semester challenges? Having more study to do; exams are harder; getting negative comment notes; vaccinations; getting lots of

homework and assignments; trying to stay focussed; more pressure; carrying the heavy bag; learning Greek; time management; fitting in.

CYPRUS MEMORIAL DAY On the 20th July, 1974, the Turkish military invasion of Cyprus occurred. This resulted in more than ¼ of the population of Cyprus being expelled from their homes in the North, turning them into refugees. Many of the Cypriots from the occupied places eventually left their country to begin a new life in countries like Australia. Each year a memorial service, wreath laying ceremony is held to mark the anniversary of this event. Thank you to the Year 11 students from Cypriot background and Year 11 SRC’s and family members who attended the Service in Martin Place last Sunday and represented our College. Well done Chrystal Christie, Aaron Konstantakis, Kristy Kyriakides, Demi Nikas and Mariah Stavrou.

CYBER SAFETY LESSONS for Year 8 This term in Pastoral Care Year 8 will be focusing on how they use various information communication technologies, to build greater awareness on how to stay safe online. Topics such as digital reputation, digital citizenship and issue of the cyber-bullying will also be covered. Furthermore, our local School Liaison Police Officer be giving students further insights into such areas and talking about the growing incidents of cybercrimes. In response to the issues associated with inappropriate online interactions, the government has now passed the Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015 and also formed the Office of the Children’s Safety Commissioner. The Act allows children suffering from serious cyberbullying to contact the Office of the Children’s esafety Commissioner to report and have content removed if social media companies do not delete offending content after it has been reported to them. Cyberbullying is any kind of bullying or harassment done using technology. It can really hurt because it can be public, hard to take down and can affect the targeted individuals, life in and out of school. There are a lot of forms it can take. What does it look like?

- Being sent mean or hurtful text messages from someone known or even unknown.

- Getting nasty, threatening or hurtful messages through social networking sites like.

- Facebook and Twitter, or through sites where people can ask/answer questions like.

- Formspring or internet forums. - People sending photos and videos of

you to others to try and embarrass or hurt you.

- People spreading rumours about you via emails or social networking sites or text messages.

- People trying to stop you from communicating with others.

- People stealing your passwords or getting into your accounts and changing the information there.

- People setting up fake profiles pretending to be you, or posting

messages or status updates from your accounts.

What can you do about it?

- Talk to someone about what's going on, whether that's a parent, teacher, or counsellor.

- Keep a record. - Report it to the website creator or other

authorities eg, Facebook, the Police and now the Office of the Children’s Safety Commissioner.

See https://au.reachout.com/bullying-and-the-law. www.esafety.gov.au For factsheets on bullying, cyberbullying and its legal implications.

AUGUST 14th- 16th, 2015  This year is the 40 Hour Famine’s 40th anniversary. Since 1975, millions of Australians have participated in or donated to the 40 Hour Famine. Around $200 million has been raised, providing practical help to reduce hunger and malnutrition. This has transformed the lives of many children, families and communities around the world. In the past seven years alone, more than two million people have benefited from food assistance through 40 Hour Famine funds. Over the last 10 years St Spyridon College has raised over $30,000 for the 40 hour famine. This year we would like to make it our best fundraising year ever and make an even bigger impact!

How can you help? What is involved? Give up something like furniture, technology, talking, chocolate, their phone, television, food etc; basically anything that matters for 40 hours from 8pm Friday night 14th August until 12 noon Sunday night 16th August 2015.

The point of going without something for 40 HOURS is to get a feel for what it’s like for kids around the world who have no choice but to go without things they need (especially food) every single day.

TIPS for how to JOIN the 40 Hour Famine and how people can donate 1: Decide what you are giving up 2: Ask for donations

Page 9: News 146 10a 2015

9

How to ask for donations (remember to only ask people you know for donations) Say something like - “Hi Yiayia, I’m doing the World Vision 40 Hour Famine in August. I’m going without ........(say whatever it is you are giving up) for 40 hours to help kids who don’t have enough to eat. Could you help me by making a donation?” 3: Family/friends can donate by going to  https://give.everydayhero.com/au/st-spyridon-college OR They can give you cash and your parents can deposit the money or they can make cash donations in several ways:- Get online using the above link and click the DONATE NOW button. Once this has been done various options can be seen. This includes:

credit card, OR using BPAY OR pay by cash at a Post Office.

With the latter two options a pledge invoice will be sent to the email supplied. It contains details on how to bank the money through BPAY, the Post Office. Or by phone.

Zoe Kanlis Year 10 (Modern Greek Year 11)

L I S T E N I N G T O O U R S T U D E N T S HUMPBACK WHALES IN 3D

Humpback Whales in 3D is a great movie about humpback whales and marine biologists trying to save them. The movie was produced by Shaun MacGillivray. The producer wants us to believe that whales deserve to live and that they are worth saving; whales are majestic creatures swimming in our waters and it is true that there are so many facts still unknown to human about these animals. The producer persuades us through the use of uplifting music played every time whales jump or do a cool trick. This creates a sense of hope that we can indeed save our whales. There are real-life clips of whales jumping. These clips are taken from a ‘whale cam’ and combined with real facts from scientists. But there are still so many unknown facts about our whales. I think that we should not kill any whales and that whales should never be killed. However I understand that whalers will lose their jobs and not make money for their families if all whaling is banned. But I really enjoyed the movie and still want all whales to live!

WONDER NO LONGER! OUCH! My head is sore. There is something seriously strange about that door or my head is huge. No, my

Page 15: News 146 10a 2015

15

head’s not huge but my body sure is. What’s happened? What did I do? I know I’m clumsy but I thought I was working on it. I may as well give up. What’s the point? Clumsy is what I am. OUCH! This place is dangerous. Everywhere I go to look and explore, I’m getting hurt. There are thorns growing out of the ground. Do they not have a gardener? I think I also need a nurse but they probably don’t have one of them either. I guess I should just walk along and see what comes next. * * * That was the worst idea ever. I really need to work on my decision making because now I’m lost. Wait! Am I hallucinating or is there a cat over there with the largest grin I’ve ever seen? It’s talking too! I can’t understand it. It’s speaking a different language. It’s disappearing. What on earth…? I can’t take it anymore and I want to go home. This place is crazy, weird, and dangerous. Whatever you can name- it’s horrible! And now there’s a storm; it’s dark. I honestly am not looking forward to what is coming next. Ahh! Why is there a flying envelope? “Please don’t attack me!” I exasperate. Wait, it’s speaking a language I actually do understand. I had better listen. It announces, “You are invited to attend the Queen of Hearts World Cup of Croquet.” The Queen of Hearts… who’s that? How does she know me? It’s storming! *** What? How did I end up here? Seriously? This is ridiculous! Was I just kidnapped? DUN DOO ROO ROO, DUN DOO ROO ROO! Why are there trumpets? “Presenting: You’re Majesty!” “Sorry, your majesty, but what’s that?” I ask. “Darling, you’ve been invited to play against me in the Croquet World Cup.” Um, okay… Oh no! This cannot be happening. “Darling, do you realise that if you lose against me you will go to gaol.” “What? You are lying, right?” I retort. “No, I never lie.” Questioning her majesty I ask, “Well what if I refuse?” “Hah! There is no way you can do that,” she announced, “I don’t like trespassers and you are one. I want you out! I’m running... running as fast as I can because she is both wicked and evil. I can hear her behind me. *** WOW! I’m in a courtroom. She must have caught me. There is no judge! Where is the

judge? Wait! What am I even here for? This is officially the scariest place I have ever been to. Oh! I think the judge is here. He’s a jumping jellybean. Are you serious? This is not going to be a fair trial. The Queen has probably bribed him, and with that I was kicked out. But I was more than glad to leave. *** “It’s been a long day,” said my friend Stella, “It’s almost like you weren’t there…”  Teoni Antonopoulos 6P  P.A.R.T.Y PROGRAM On the 18th of June Year 11 students had the opportunity to visit Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital to participate in a P.A.R.T.Y (prevent alcohol and risk related trauma in youth) program. Throughout the course of the day we had the chance to hear from doctors, nurses and paramedics that exposed the harsh reality of poor choices, allowing us to reflect on the uncalculated risks we have each taken in the past. The nurses at the hospital also led us through interactive sessions in the emergency room and rehabilitation unit, where we were familiarised with the brutality of risk related traumas and the extensive recovery time that can follow one foolish decision. We concluded the program with a touching presentation from an injury survivor, who was confined to a wheelchair after a motor collision with a driver influenced by drugs and alcohol. She described the inevitable hardships that arose from such a life changing disability, and her emotional turmoil as she dealt with the consequences of someone else’s mistake. The day was an eye-opening experience for Year 11 as we were confronted by the severity of the possible decisions we could make about drugs, alcohol and risky behaviour.

PARENTING TIPS TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT TIME AND PLACE By Michael Grose Director Parentingideas 2015 My mum used to tell me, “There’s a time and place for everything Michael, and this is not the time and place to behave like that!” My mum’s words came back to me as I watched three kids (tweens and early teens) try to out-wrestle and out-shout each other while they waited in an airport queue with their parents. Their noise and wrestling quite obviously disturbed and interfered with fellow travellers, but their parents made no attempt to rein in their behaviour. I couldn’t help thinking that there is a time and place for this type of behaviour and THIS WAS NEITHER OF THOSE! Time and place is a brilliant socialisation lesson for children of any age or era to absorb. It starts by asking yourself as a parent: “What does this social situation reasonably require of my children at their age and stage of development?” In the above case it’s reasonable to expect tweens and teens to be able to stand in a queue without disturbing others for the ten minutes that it took to get service. It’s should be easy for that age group to show some self-control and consideration for others. That timeframe maybe a stretch for under fives, but some parental attention to distract them from being bored may do the trick. The principle is the same regardless of age or a child’s developmental stage, but the application varies. Socialising kids It’s a parent’s job to socialise your kids. That is, it’s your job to develop a sense of OTHER so that they become aware of how their behaviour impacts on others. Many kids have L Plates when it comes to behaving in public so they need your assistance to behave according to the requirements of the situation – or according to the time and place. You do this by:

1. Giving your kids social scripts There are times when kids don’t know what to say or how to act in different social situations. “Here’s what you can say when you meet Mrs Smith…” is the type of pre-emptive social scripting that benefits most boys, kids on the autism spectrum as well as kids who need extra help to get on with others. 2. Regular behaviour rehearsal Practise appropriate social behaviours at home so kids know how to behave around others. For example, you can role-play a restaurant situation by serving your kids’ meals at the dinner table and expecting them to use their manners. 3. Just-in-time prompts It helps to remind in positive terms how kids should speak and act around others before entering a social situation or a special place such as a church, airport or restaurant. “In church most people...” 4. Teaching good manners Manners are social guidelines that teach kids how to behave around others. While some conventions change over time, basic good manners such as saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ never change. They are the basis of a civil society. Kids are never too young to start learning manners. 5. Respectful use of consequences While the best discipline happens before an event (through behaviour rehearsal, prompts and teaching manners) there are times when the only way to get a message across about time and place is to DO something if the kids’ behaviour thoughtlessly or deliberately impinges on the rights of others. And the best action may be WITHDRAWAL from the place or activity that they are doing. That may mean that the kids (and you) miss out on an activity or being in a special place but such lessons are rarely forgotten and reinforce your important messages. Time and place is a great parenting message for kids to learn. It’s about consideration for others; it’s about self-control and above all else, it’s about fitting into different social situations.
