How to protect your home while on vacation

The last thing you want when going away on your an-nual cottage getaway is to worry about the safety of your home. You want to rest—and rest easy too. What you’re looking for is peace of mind that your home is as safe as it can be from burglary or other damage.

There are several key steps you should take to ensure peace of mind when away from home. The following home protection checklist can help you plan important safety measures before your depar-ture to the cottage:

Did you suspend your newspaper and mail de-•livery; or have a neighbour collect them for you? Does the house look lived-in?That means having someone park their car in •your driveway if you’re taking yours. You can even ask a neighbour to put a bag of garbage at your curb on garbage day.Did you set your lights on timers, in various •rooms?With some timers, the lights go on and off at dif-•ferent times each day, which means a burglar can’t pick up on a pattern. Motion sensor lights outside can also deter a burglar. Consider install-ing them in front and back.Did you ensure that all your doors and windows •are locked and secure?Don’t forget about the garage. Place a bar or stick •of wood in the lower track of sliding doors or win-dows, to be extra safe.Did you turn off the water-main and unplug the •major appliances as an added precaution?Did you inform a neighbour when you’re leaving •and returning, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious?Leave your neighbhour a phone number where •you can be reached, and a spare set of your keys in case of an emergency.Did you consider a home security system?•A home security system is a very effective deter-

select an unoccupied home with the easiest access. Why not make it difficult for them. A home pro-tected by a home security system is three times less susceptible to a break in than one without a system. Home security system decals and yard signs are also an effective deterrent. Make sure your home secu-rity system includes a loud inside house siren, de-tectors at all exterior doors, and motion sensors in the master bedroom and main living areas.

The latest home automation technology in inter-active home security systems can now allow moni-toring of your home from a distance by wireless transmission through your smartphone. Fully inter-active security systems let you arm and disarm your alarm, lock or unlock your front door, control lights and your home’s thermostat from your cottage at the touch of your smartphone. You can even have video monitoring and be alerted to view the com-ings and goings of cleaning staff or house sitters on your phone, so you can enjoy your retreat without worrying about what’s going on at home.

Safety tips for a fun summerSummertime allows homeowners the

opportunity to spend quality time outdoors. While the warm weather brings along lots of outdoor enjoyment, there are also potential dangers to be avoid. By planning ahead and taking precautions you can ensure safety hazards don’t spoil your fun. The following summer safety advice is courtesy of the Ontario Real Estate Association and your local REALTOR.

Grill safetySummertime means backyard barbecues. But,

grilling on or near combustible areas can be a fi re hazard. The most common grilling hazards are open fl ames and heat generated in the grill base that can be transferred to the wood of a porch, deck or siding, causing a fi re. When grilling, follow these safety tips:

• Place the grill away from siding, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches

• Periodically remove grease or fat buildup• Use only proper starter fl uid and store the

Water safetyStay safe on the water this year whether it be

• Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim--this includes adults and children.

• Never leave a child unobserved around water. Your eyes must be on the child at all times. Adult supervision is recommended.

• Install a phone by the pool or keep a cordless phone nearby so that you can call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

• Learn Red Cross CPR and insist that babysitters, grandparents, and others who care for your child know CPR.

• Enclose the pool completely with a self-locking, self-closing fence with vertical bars. Openings in the fence should be no more than four inches wide. If the house is part of the barrier, the doors leading from the house to the pool should remain locked and be protected with an alarm that produces sounds when the door is unexpectedly opened.

• Never leave furniture near the fence that would enable a child to climb over the fence.

• Always keep basic lifesaving equipment by the pool and know how to use it. Pole, rope, and personal fl otation devices (PFDs) are recommended.

• Keep toys away from the pool when it is not in use. Toys can attract young children into the pool.

• Pool covers should always be completely removed prior to pool use.

• If a child is missing, check the pool fi rst. Go to the edge of the pool and scan the entire pool, bottom, and surface, as well as the surrounding pool area.

sunburn and the potential risk of skin cancer by following a few simple tips:

• Apply sunscreen with at least a SPF-15 or higher, to all exposed areas of the body

• Minimize your exposure to the sun between the hours of 10:00AM and 3:00PM, when the sun is strongest

• Reapply sunscreen every two hours, even on cloudy days and especially after swimming or perspiring.

• Wear clothing that covers your body and shades your face -- like a hat!

• Avoid exposure to UV radiation from sun-lamps or tanning parlors.

Bug safetyThe Ontario Ministry of Health is urging

people to protect themselves against the threat of West Nile Virus. The best way to avoid this potentially dangerous virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. Here are a few practical suggestions to lower your risk:

• Clean up and empty containers of stagnant water, such as old tires, fl ower pots, wheelbarrows, barrels or tin cans that are outdoors. Drill holes in the bottoms of used containers so water can’t collect. Change water in bird baths weekly.

• Collect lawn cuttings, raked leaves or other decaying debris, such as apples or berries that fall from trees, and recycle or mulch so

that organic matter does not end up in storm sewers as a food source for mosquito larvae. Turn over compost frequently.

• Check window screens for holes and make sure they fi t snugly into the window frame so mosquitoes will not get indoors. If you don’t have screens, consider keeping windows closed between dusk and dawn.

• Make sure you wear light-coloured clothing such as long-sleeved shirts or jackets and long pants. Tuck pants into socks for extra protection when going outside between dusk and dawn.

• Use insect repellent containing DEET that has been approved for use in Canada (It will have a PCP number on the front label) and follow directions for use carefully.
