Other current projects, according to DeCrescenzo, include “leasing two of our largest dump scows to Camargo Correa, a multi-million dollar company in Brazil. These dump scows can hold more than 4,000 cubic yards of material. The proj- ect is expected to last for a year.” “And, our equipment and some employees are assisting the company in the deepening of the Port of Sao Luis. When contractors need to breakrock, they’ll often turn to a tradi-tional hydraulic hammer. Butwhen the rock in question is glacialgranite boulders, something morepowerful is required.

Ambrose Brothers Inc. had sucha need at its gravel pit in Sandwich,N.H., and found a solution in theSurestrike rock breaker.

Located near the WhiteMountain National Park, not farfrom Lake Winnipesaukee, the site— a natural gravel deposit of most-ly granite — is approximately 200-

acres and is part of a 600-acre siteowned by Ambrose Brothers.

Much of the site has large andmid-sized naturally formed graniteboulders, which date back in for-mation to the ice age and were cre-ated by glaciers. These bouldersare extremely difficult to break, notonly because they are made ofgranite, but because they wereformed naturally and are round, with no seams. It is the seams, cracks or fractures that make thebreaking of a rock relatively easywith the use of a hydraulic ham-mer, according to AmbroseBrothers.

“Over the years we have tried tobreak these boulders withhydraulic hammers. If we wereable to break them at all theamount of time it took and theamount of wear that it put on thehammer and the excavator was notworth the effort to continue trying. We could put a 5,000-foot-poundhydraulic breaker on these boul-ders for hours and make little or no

progress. Whitney and Son intro-duced us to the Surestrike model4000 52,000-foot-pound rockbreaker. This breaker is verystrong. It hits with a lot of impactand can strike the rock up to 20times per minute,” said BobAmbrose, owner.

“The Surestrike has been break-ing these granite boulders nearlyeffortlessly. With this ready supplyof boulders scattered across our pitthat we were previously unable toharvest, our production numbersincreased significantly. The only

way we could have harvested theserocks previously was by blastingthem, which was not very practi-cal.”

“Much of the sand we had beenproducing in the pit was sandygravel. Breaking this hard granitewe are able to mix the hard granitewith the sandy gravel, which helpsus make a product with therequired specifications,” Ambrose

continued.“We purchased the Surestrike in

May 2009, so it has been operatingfor well over a year. Thus far wehave only needed to replace thelarge nylon strap inside the unitevery couple of hundred hours,” headded.

The Surestrike operator, JoeBallou, an employee of AmbroseBrothers, also is impressed withthe Surestrike.

“I have never seen anything likeit. We have tried all sorts ofapproaches to breaking these gran-

ite boulders. The Surestrike is theonly thing we have seen that getsthe job done,” he said.

Surestrike Model 4000The Surestrike model 4000 is

rated for crushing extremely hardmaterials. It is effective for han-dling glacial rock, granite, traprock, basalt, slag and heavy-dutyconcrete demolition, according tothe manufacturer.

The breaker has an operatingweight of 15,900 lbs. (7,212 kg),

an overall height of 23 ft. (7 m), anoverall width of 30 in. (76 cm) andan overall depth of 52 in. (132 cm).

It has a single blow impact ener-gy of 52,000 lbs. and a cycle timeof three seconds. The striker pindiameter is 8 in. (20 cm) and thestriker pin length is 33 in. (83.8cm).

Back to NatureA natural reclamation process is

taking place inside the areas of theAmbrose pit where gravel is nolonger being harvested. Due to a

very high water table, there is anatural underground aquifer justbelow the surface in the gravel pit.The holes that have been left fromexcavating are quickly filled with atremendous quantity and quality ofwater. As area birds have visitedthese ponds their droppings, whichcontain cranberry seeds from otherregions of the state, have started anatural organic cranberry bog.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Maine TransportationDepartment said pedestrian, cycling and motor traffic will beaffected by construction on busy Veterans Memorial Bridge, which connects Portland and South Portland off Route 295.Work began June 21.

The bridge’s southbound sidewalk and shoulder areclosed, affecting motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Therealso will be daily southbound lane closures as necessary dur-ing off-peak traffic hours for construction activities. Traffic

during peak hours on weekdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.will not be affected.

The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in summer2012, when the old Veterans Memorial Bridge will beremoved. The entire project will be complete by December2012.

Project manager Jeff Folsom said that since the existingbridge will remain open during construction of the newbridge, disruption to traffic is expected to be minimal.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Officials in Maine’s largestcity and the Federal Emergency Management Agency havereached an agreement that keeps most of Portland Harborfrom being classified as a high-risk flood zone.

On June 4, FEMAreleased revised flood maps that allowsnew structures to be built along Commercial Street.

New flood maps that FEMA had proposed would have

reclassified most all of Portland Harbor as a high-risk floodzone. It would have prohibited new construction on thewaterfront and reconstruction of any structure that was morethan 50 percent destroyed.

The changes come after city and state officials had spentmonths encouraging FEMA to reconsider its flood designa-tion for Portland harbor.

‘Masters of the Extraordinary’There is no end to the type of projects that Sterling has

tackled.“We did a project that involved the heavy lift (mobiliza-

tion) of huge gas generators (turbines) — 250 tons each —that were delivered by rail to the Charlestown (Mass.) navydock where they were picked (by crane) by SterlingEquipment and moved to Raytheon,” said DeCrescenzo.

“We moved the old Coast Guard base — from land to abarge — and transported the building itself here to our yardin Quincy,” he added. “We off-loaded and transported thejacking system for the dismantling of the Goliath crane thatwas located here in the old Naval Shipyard,” saidDeCrescenzo.

“We assisted Horizon with plowing and support of apipeline job — providing service at both ends with tie-ins,Beverly to Weymouth, Massachusetts, quite a haul,” headded.

Having played a key role in many of the area’s other mostprominent large-scale, in-water and water’s edge construc-tion projects, including Boston’s Deer Island TreatmentFacility and the Central Artery Tunnel, Sterling’s team standsout as “masters of the extraordinary.”

For pile driving, waterfront property rehabilitation, shore-line facilities, bulkhead and pier projects, soil stabilizationjobs, beach and shoreline work and much more, Sterling cantow the line.

In addition to the facility in Quincy, at the old NavalShipyard, Sterling also has a full service/rental repair yardlocated in Staten Island, N.Y.

Different Kind of fleetSterling provides unique equipment for specialty jobs and

diverse projects throughout New England and the rest of theU.S.

“We have specialized in marine equipment for over 20years. Continuing with our tradition of excellence, we fillthe changing needs of our customers by updating andexpanding our heavy civil and marine rental divisions. Weprovide cranes, excavators and buckets through our HeavyDivision and barges, dredges, scows and tugs from ourMarine Division,” added DeCrescenzo. “Not only is ourequipment in top-notch condition, but it is provided at rea-sonable rates and from various locations up and down theEastern Seaboard.”

Sterling’s Marine Division boasts barges from 90 to 300ft. (27.4 to 91.4 m), both inland classed and ABS classed, tugs from 250 to 2,200 hp (186 to 1,640 kW) and scowsfrom 1,500 to 4,000 yds. (1,371 to 3,658 m). Its HeavyDivision includes cranes and heavy lifts from 65 to 350 ton(59 to 318 t) and a full line of excavators.

The Quincy yard has ample pier space, water depths to 30ft. (9 m), 300 ton (272 t) crane service and easy access tometropolitan Boston. It is also home to a full servicemechanic shop — staffed by highly qualified mechanics tomeet all heavy equipment needs and repairs.

The East Boston location has a head wall 250 ft. (76.2 m)long, water to accommodate barges and most tugs, 300-toncrane service and easy access to metropolitan Boston.

The Staten Island location also has a head wall 250 ft.long, water to accommodate barges and most tugs, 300-ton

Third, Fourth Generations Keep Company Going Strong

Within minutes ofbeginning, giant por-tions of granite breakaway from the boulder, until the once 8-ft. (2.4m) plus diameter boul-der is broken down to 2-ft. (.6 m) minus crush-able rocks.

David, ran the second generation of thecompany; and today their children, Boband Ed, along with Bob and Ed’s children,Rob and Paul, run the company.

The company does site work, both com-mercial and residential, and it operates aquarry and a gravel pit. The aggregateproducts are sold to both private andmunicipal customers around the LakesRegion of New Hampshire (LakeWinnipesaukee and the lake areas north ofLake Winnipesaukee).

The company has 35 employees and a

fleet of equipment that includes 10 trucks, seven excavators, three dozers and fivewheel loaders. The earthmoving fleet ismade up of Caterpillar and Komatsumachines. For crushing purposes it owns aNordberg crusher that it purchased fromWhitney and Son in the mid 1980s fromsales representative Doug Baker.

Co. Anticipates Increasing Need for Its Unique Service

crane service and provides easy access to allNew York areas, and the Hudson River andNew Jersey ports.

The yards are manned by mechanics, welders, fitters and operators and managedby marine personnel. The company is capa-ble of assembling equipment of all sizes, andwalking onto barges at all of its facilities.

Sterling rents fork trucks and cranes in itsyards on land and on the sea and offers manlifts, welding services, Bobcats loaders andtrucking.

Filling a NicheDeCrescenzo recognizes that Sterling’s

speciality is unique, but sees the potentialfor growth as ongoing. “Yes, the marineequipment/construction industry is a specialniche, requiring expertise and experience. But, as the world looks to its oceans for moreresources, our business must expand to meetthe needs of the demand.”

Currently, Sterling employs approximate-ly 15 people on staff for the rental divisionand daily operations. However, that numbercan increase significantly depending uponongoing projects, domestically, as well asinternationally.

Water Offers Unique ChallengesDeCrescenzo has been with the company

since its inception, and is one of the primaryreasons for its growth andsuccess. General managerMark Quinn joined Sterlingin 1999 and has providedleadership for more than 10years.

Along the way, Sterlingpurchased Coen Marine Co.in New York, incorporatingthem into the existing busi-ness.

“Our company’s successhas been established througha team effort,” saidDeCrescenzo. “All employ-

ees work to the best of their ability to provideexcellent service to the customer and to pro-mote Sterling on all levels.”

Precision and attention to detail are com-mon threads in every Sterling Equipmentjob, but when the focus is on marine con-struction, the power and unpredictablenature of the sea also dictates an experi-enced, specialized approach. Winds, tidesand the corrosiveness of salt water, all havean impact on construction specifications sospecialized equipment and experienced per-sonnel are a must.

The equipment fleet is owned and operat-ed by Sterling. This fleet includes the largestinventory of marine support equipment onthe east coast, with each piece carefullymaintained and with the constant updatingand expansion of the fleet, the equipment isamong the most technologically advancedavailable.

“Our mission and philosophy at SterlingEquipment is simple,” said DeCrescenzo.“We strive to provide the best equipment andthe best possible service on every project forevery company.”
