used to say “Good morning.” In the afternoon/evening, you can use the
equivalent of “good evening” which is, الخير مساء masaa' l-khayr. In the previous
lesson, we learned that the question “How are you?” changes forms depending on
whether you’re addressing a man, a woman, or a group of people. ؟حالك كيف
kayfa Haaluka? is used when asking a man, ؟حالك كيف kayfa Haaluki? is used when
asking a woman, حالكما؟ كيف kayfa Haalukumaa? is used when asking two people,
and حالكم؟ كيف kayfa Haalukum? is for a group of people.
masculine feminine
singular kayfa Haaluka? kayfa Haaluki?
dual kayfa Haalukumaa? kayfa Haalukumaa?
plural kayfa Haalukum? kayfa Haalukunna?
To answer the question above, we use bi-khayr, which means “fine.” In the
dialog, Mr. and Mrs. Qais say: naHnu bi-khair, which literally means, “we fine” or
“we are fine.” Another way of answering “How are you?” is by saying kullu
shay'in bi-khayr, which means “everything’s fine.” Now, any of these answers is
typically followed by either shukran (thanks) as in the dialog, or the the
expression al-Hamdu lillaah, which translates as “thanks/praise be to God.”
Finally, the question wa 'anti? means “and you?” in the feminine form. In the
dialog, we used wa "anti, kayfa Haaluki? and it means, “and you, how are you
doing?” To ask a man, we use the masculine form of "you" which is 'anta, and
the question "and you?" becomes wa 'anta?
Cultural Insight
Greetings and farewells are two important aspects of Arab countries. Greetings
are not to be compared with the quick American “hi.” It takes time for two people
to exchange different questions and answers which interest them about each
other. Greetings are usually followed by: shaking hands, kissing cheeks or hands,
or putting one’s hand over one’s heart after shaking hands. In today’s lesson, we
wanted to show that even when you come across somebody in the elevator (as is
the case for Layla and her neighbors), you still manage to ask them quickly how
they’re doing and take the time to hear their answer.
