New Age Epoxy: Corrosion Protection in DWV

NewAge Casting, a leading provider of Cast Iron Soil Pipe, is launching NewAge Epoxy for additional corrosion protection in the DWV application. This product is ideal for situations that call for enhanced protection of the DWV system like Hospitals, Medical Treatment Facilities, Soda Machines, Kitchens, Bars, Maritime Saltwater Applications, Water-less Urinals, and Low Flow / High Efficiency Urinals and Toilets.

Excessive Corrosion on the cast iron system leads to the system failing, therefore requiring the system to be re-piped or replaced. As re-pipe’s are a huge burden for a building own-er and its tenants, deterioration on the DWV system is something that contractors, engineers and owners want to avoid.

To minimize this corrosion issue, engineers have since updated their DWV specification with different piping systems including plastic, dual containment, acid waste, dura-iron, and glass pipe to resist excessive corrosion.

NewAge has received feedback from contractors and engineers on the limitations of the bituminous asphalt coating in severe environments. Our research and testing has proven that NewAge Epoxy will resist chemicals, acids, salt water, and many other forms of excessive corrosion and will protect the cast iron system for the life of the building.

NewAge Epoxy Specification

Sanitary and Storm Drain, Waste, and Vent Piping:

I. GeneralThe epoxy coated cast iron soil pipe shall be installed above or below ground and is intended forDWV systems in commercial buildings.

II. Componentsa. Epoxy coated hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings.b. Shielded EPDM Extra Heavy Duty (XH) couplings for hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings.

III. Applicable Codes and Standardsa.Epoxy coated hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings shall conform to ASTM A-888, mostcurrent revision, through an accredited third party organization that complies with ISO/IEC Guide 65requirements.

b. All epoxy coated hubless cast iron soil pipe shall be hydro tested at 5psi.

c. EPDM extra heavy duty couplings for hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings shall conform toASTM C1540, excluding gasket material.

d.Heavy duty shielded couplings shall be 301 stainless steel with 5/16” hex head screws andshall have a torque rating of 80 in-lb. Heavy Duty shielded couplings shall have four bandsfor 1 ½”-4” diameter couplings and six bands for 5”-15” diameter couplings.

e. All couplings shall have a Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer (EPDM) based interior rubbersleeve.

IV. Epoxy Coatinga. General: Epoxy coating on all hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings shall be composed of two partepoxy resin with pigment and fillers. The epoxy shall have excellent resistance to water and alkali. Thesmooth surface shall result in a coefficient of friction of 130 Hazen-Williams or less.

On the sample evaluated, the manufacturer has changed the coating with Epoxy Anticorrosive Coating (Yellow at the inside of the pipe and Red at the outside of the pipe). Therefore, only the above mentioned section of the standard was conducted.

Test Results: All tests and evaluations were conducted per the written procedures specified in the standard.

9. Coating – COMPLIED

9.1 The pipe evaluated was uniformly coated with a material suitable for the purpose, that is adherent, not brittle, and without a tendency to scale. The coating contained no asbestos (refer to material safety data sheets and statement from manufacturer). Material safety data sheets were furnished by the coating manufacturer and will be available when requested. The coatings were evenly and smoothly applied to all surfaces.

9.2 The pipes were coated with epoxy coating containing no lead (refer to material safety data sheets and statement from manufacturer).

9.3 The manufacturer committed to annually prepare and submit samples to a qualified laboratory for test in accordance with Practice E 1645. Refer to statement from manufacturer.

9.4 The manufacturer committed to prepare and submit samples when changing sources of supply or the coating manufacturer changes formulations for the coating. Refer to statement from manufacturer.

9.5 The manufacturer committed to maintain all records for a period of seven years. Refer to statement from manufacturer.

9.6 Copies of the coating test will be furnished when requested. Refer to statement from manufacturer.

General Terms and ConditionsGENERALThese terms and conditions shall control with respect to any purchase order or sale of Sellers products. No waiver, alteration or modification of these terms and conditions whether on Buyers purchase order or otherwise shall be valid unless the waiver, alteration, or modification is specifically accepted in writing and signed by an authorized representative of Seller.

DELIVERYSeller will make any effort to complete delivery of products as indicated on Sellers acceptance of an order, but Seller assumes no responsibility or liability, and will accept no back charge, for loss or damage due to delay or inability to deliver caused by acts of God, war, labor difficulties, accident, delays of carriers, by contractors or suppliers, inability to obtain materials, shortages of fuel or energy, or any other causes of any kind whatsoever beyond the control of Seller. Seller may terminate any contract of sale of its products without liability of any nature, by written notice of Buyer, in the event that the delay in delivery or performance resulting from any of the aforesaid causes shall continue for a period of sixty (60) days. Under no circumstances shall Seller be liable for any special or consequential damages or for loss, damage, or expense (whether or not based on negligence) directly or indirectly arising from delays or failure to give notice of delay.

WARRANTYSeller warrants for ten (10) years from the date of shipment Sellers manufactured products to the extent that Seller will replace those having defects in material or workmanship when used for the purpose and in the manner which Seller recommends. If Sellers examination shall disclose to its satisfaction that the product is defective, and an adjustment is required, the amount of such adjustment shall the not exceed the net sales price of the defective products only and no allowance will be made for labor or expense of repairing or replacing defective product or workmanship or damage resulting from the same. No adjustment shall be implemented unless product in question is returned to seller in its originally installed condition, still connected to other components of the joint. Buyer must contact Seller as quickly as possible so Seller can assess product in its installed condition. No claims will be honored unless claim is made within forty five (45) days of the defect being found. Where engineering design or fabrication work is supplied, Buyers acceptance of Sellers design or of delivery of work shall relieve Seller of all further obligation, other than expressed in Sellers product warranty. THIS IS SELLERS SOLE WARRANTY. SELLERS MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WHICH EXCEED SELLERS AFORESTATED OBLIGATION ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED BY SLLER AND EXCLUDED FROM THIS WARRANTY. Seller neither assumes, nor authorizes any person to assume for it, any other obligation in connection with the sale of its engineering designs or product. This warranty shall not apply to any products or parts of products which (a) have been repaired or altered outside of Sellers factory, in any manner; (b) have been subjected to misuse, negligence or accidents; (c) have been used in a manner contrary to Sellers instructions or recommendations.Seller shall not be responsible for design errors due to inaccurate or incomplete information supplied by Buyer or its representatives. This warranty is non-transferable.

LIABILITYSeller will not be liable for any loss, damage, cost of repairs, incidental or consequential damages of any kind, whether based upon warranty (except for the obligation accepted by Seller under warranty above), contract or negligence, arising in connection with the design, manufacture, sale, use or repair of the products or of the engineering designs supplied to Buyer.

RETURNSSeller cannot accept return of any products unless its written permission has been first obtained, in which case same will be credited subject to the following: (a) All material returned must, on its arrival at Sellers plant, be found to be in first-class condition; if not, cost of putting in saleable condition will be deducted from credit memoranda; (b) A handling charge deduction of twenty five percent (25%) will be made from all credit memoranda issued for material returned; (c) transportation charges, if nor prepaid will be deducted from credit memoranda.

SHIPMENTSAll products sent out will be carefully examined, counted, and packed. The cost of any special packing or special handling caused by Buyers requirements or request shall be added to the amount of the order. No claim for shortages will be allowed unless made in writing within ten (10) days of receipt of a shipment. Claims for products damaged or lost in transit should be made on the carrier, as Sellers responsibility ceases, and title passes, on delivery to the carrier.

PRODUCTSOrders covering special or non-standard products are not subject to cancellation except on such terms as Seller may specify on application.

PRICESPrices and designs are subject to change without notice. All prices are F.O.B. Point of Shipment, unless otherwise stated.

TAXES The amount of any sales, excise or other taxes, if any, applicable to the products covered by this order, shall be added to the purchased price and shall not be paid by Buyer unless buyer provides Seller with an exemption certificate acceptable to the taxing authorities.
